Immortality

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT

The secret to immortality could be anything. Every time I show my kids something I recall from my childhood, I also wonder if my parents experienced memories of their own childhoods when they shared those little things with me. As Terry Pratchett once wrote, “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away…” This comic is from Lunarbaboon, of course.

This 2-Year Old Girl Is a Master Archer

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 02:00 AM PDT

Dolly Shivani Cherukuri recently broke a national archery record in India. At the age of 2, she became the youngest person in the country to earn at least 200 points at an archery competition. She's definitely ready to join Team Arrow!

Dolly comes from a family of archers. Her father runs an archery school and trains her in that art for 2 to 3 hours a day. It's already paid off. The Daily Telegraph reports:

Dolly scored a total of 388 points. She began by firing 36 arrows at a target 15 feet away, then shot 36 more, this time from 21 feet.

The young record-breaker was being set up for bow and arrow stardom “when she was in the womb itself,” Cherukuri Satyanarayana, Dolly’s father, told AFP. Light carbon arrows were made so she wouldn't struggle with their weight when training.

Fifteen Television Shows That Were Canceled After Only One Episode

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PDT

Occasionally a television show will be canceled and there will be a backlash against the network powers that be from angry fans defending its quality and demanding that it return to the air. Alternately, a seriously awful show might be canceled almost immediately, with little or no resistance. The latter scenario is the case with these fifteen shows, one of which is an unfortunate A&E reality show about "The Hoff" himself. Revolving around David Hasselhoff's day-to-day life and attempts
to revive his post-Baywatch career and get his two daughters into the biz, the misguided idea turned production bombed as soon as it aired. The cable channel abruptly put it out of its misery.

Read about more horrific sounding one-episode wonders — including a British comedy called Heil Honey, I'm Home about Hitler and Eva Braun moving next door to a Jewish couple — here.

Iron Throne Made of Golf Irons

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Here’s a pun on the Iron Throne from the TV series Game of Thrones that I haven’t come across before. Direct Golf, in collaboration with Dead Beats Create, used their surplus supply of 300 irons, as in golf clubs, to create a throne of irons. Pretty clever. They also posted the process of making it, with pictures.

Once completed the Iron Throne measures 6ft tall at the top of the back rest and the 3ft high seating position will allow you to run the rule over all your subjects.

Needless to say the completed Throne is a fairly substantial structure, the exact weight is yet to be determined (we haven’t yet found a suitable set of scales) however you will need around four people to move it unless you happen to have Gregor Clegane at your disposal.

What would you use this for? How about installing it at a golf course, and anyone who lands a hole-in-one gets to sit on it for pictures! -Thanks, Gurpreet Singh!

How Your Dog Sees Classic Children’s Books

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 08:00 PM PDT

What you see as joyous, you dog sees as alarming—and vice versa. Brian Boone of Some Ecards altered the covers to 10 classic children’s books so that they reflect a dog’s point of view. Your pup doesn’t think too highly of Dr. Seuss, but anything involving the indoor water fountain has to be good.

Opportunity: The Unstoppable Mars Rover

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 06:00 PM PDT

The Mars rover Opportunity touched down on the surface of the red planet in 2004, just three weeks after its twin, the Spirit rover. Opportunity’s mission was planned for 90 days, but here it is, eleven years later and still going strong. Randall Munroe of xkcd told the story of Spirit in a way that brought tears to our eyes. But when it comes to the story of Opportunity, the key emotion should be fear. Go to xkcd to see the ever-priceless hovertext.

Incredible 3D Tattoo Appears to Pop off This Man's Arm

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Tony Booth of Dabs Tattoo in Southport, Merseyside, UK put an impressively three-dimensional tattoo on this man's arm. Even as the camera pans over his arm, showing the tattoo from multiple angles, it still appears to be more than a flat surface. The hex pattern creates the impression that he's a holographic simulation under construction. Hex by hex, he is slowly forming before our eyes.

The detailed work took Booth 2 years of work. It won him the title of Best Blackwork at the Tattoo Tea Party in Manchester.

Teen Drivers in Their Natural Habitat

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

You say you never text while driving. You should still worry, because these teenagers are out there on the same roads you drive. While it happens to all age groups, teenagers are most likely to believe they are more competent than they really are. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety issued a report on teen drivers who crash due to distracted driving. This video is a sampling of some of those crashes, which are mostly due to cell phone use, and the horrible habit of texting while driving. The very first thing any new driver should learn is the importance of constant observation. Traffic is like a complicated mass dance, with most of the dancers at less-than-professional level. So you have to not only see where you are going, but where everyone else on the road is, front, back, and sides, plus where they are going and how fast. The ability to map that dance takes constant observation and a lot of practice.

The video analysis detailed in the report found that distracted driving contributes to four times as many accidents as indicated through police reports. And you can see that many of these accidents will never involve a police report, as there is often no other car involved. Of course, what intrigued me was how they got so much video of crashes that weren’t staged. The explanation is in the report:

Lytx, a company that has been collecting data using in-vehicle event recorders (IVERs) for over a decade, provided the crash data. Their DriveCam system collects video, audio and accelerometer data when a driver triggers the device by hard braking, fast cornering, or an impact that exceeds a certain g-force. Each video is 12-seconds long, and provides information on the 8 seconds before and 4 seconds after the trigger. The system has a wide range of applications—families use them to help young drivers as they begin to drive independently, while over 500 commercial and government fleets employ them for fleet management.

Crashes examined in this study involved drivers aged 16-19 who were participating in a teen driving program that involved the use of a DriveCam system. Ltyx made 6,842 videos of crashes that occurred between August 2007 and July 2013 available for review. In order to reduce this number and to eliminate minor curb strikes from the analysis, those crashes in which the vehicle sustained forces less than 1g were excluded. Crashes in which the DriveCam equipped vehicle was struck from behind were excluded. Additional videos were excluded for other reasons (e.g., animal strikes, video problems, or the driver not being a teen). A total of 1,691 moderate-to-severe crashes met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed for the current study.

Such a system seems like it might be a good idea for probationary drivers, maybe for a year or until they prove their competence. -via Viral Viral Videos

Ten Weird And Wonderful Toys From Japan

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PDT

We all know that Japanese artists and designers create some of the strangest stuff on the planet, and that their creative efforts make the world a much more colorful place to live. Their whimsical and eyecatching designs seem to shine brightest when they're brought to life in toy form, and then we not only get to look at their wacky designs- we get to play with them!

Here are ten weird and wonderful toys created in the Land of the Rising Sun-

1. Pachi Pachi Clappy-

(Image Link)

One handed clapping is now ridiculously easy thanks to the Pachi Pachi Clappy toy, the toy that does all the clapping for you!

Pachi Pachi Clappy has two "big soft squishy hands" on top and a funny lil' face in front, so you can carry your own private cheering section around with you wherever you go!

2. Jaws-Kun Puppet for Toothpaste Guidance-

(Image Link)

Teaching kids how to properly brush their teeth is hard since we don’t have flip top heads, and that set of plastic choppers sitting on your dentist’s desk is downright creepy, so a puppet with a full set of teeth makes sense.

But did the final product have to be so creep-tastically adorable? I don't know if I want to brush its teeth or burn it with fire!

4. Kobito Dukan-

Kobitos are strange little dwarf creatures created by Japanese artist Toshitaka Nabata, and together they make up the Kobito Dukan, or dwarf encyclopedia.

They're kinda like the Pikmin, but their kimokawaii (ugly cute) looks and their strange personalities make them way more interesting, and more toy friendly!

Everything from vinyl and plush toys to cell phone cases and clothing have been made bearing their unique likenesses, so you can surround yourself with Kobitos and be happy forever!

You can't have a list about Japanese toys without including something digital you can interact with, so here's the Tuttuki Bako Finger Game.

A small box with a screen begs you to stick your finger in its hole and see what happens, and although that would normally be a terrible idea the Tuttuki Bako makes poking around fun again!

(Image Link)

Let's end this list with a Japanese toy line that may cause controversy in the U.S., a toy line featuring our beloved Statue Of Liberty feeling all kinds of free, just like a real life lady!

She lounges around looking at her tablet, bends over backwards in some sort of Yoga position and generally defies the stereotype that she's a big stiff. Freedom ain't free, so shut up and take my money, Japan!

I hope you've enjoyed this trip down the apanese toy aisle, and if you've suddenly realized you must own one of these strange toys guess what- you totally can!

The internet is a wondrous place full of stores from around the world willing and able to sell you strange toys! Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go find out which one of my credit cards isn't maxed out...

Australia’s Plant of Pain

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PDT

In a country where all the animals are trying to kill you, the Gympie Gympie is a plant that just wants to make you wish you were dead. You don’t even have to touch it to hurt, because the hairlike structures that cover its leaves shed and make the ground around the plant dangerous. And don't even think about using it for toilet paper.

Many would say that endangering the Gympie Gympie is a job well begun. This innocuous-looking greenery is one of the most feared plants in the world. Its sting is so agonizing that a slight brush to the hand from one of the leaves can make a person throw up from the pain.

Not that the leaves are the only dangerous part. Only the roots of the Gympie are free of the fine hairs that lodge in the skin and deliver the sting. Every subsequent moment of pressure on the hairs causes them to put out more poison into the skin. The pain feels like fire, and it lasts. As long as the hairs are embedded in the skin, the pain keeps coming. Stings from the Gympie cause the lymphatic system to go into overdrive. A person's throat, armpits, and groin swell up and ladle on the pain as the lymph nodes expand.

Yes, it’s an endangered species. But who will step up to save the Gympie Gympie? Read more about this horrifying plant at io9. -via Metafilter

The Pilots’ Graveyard

Posted: 28 Mar 2015 06:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Robert Treufeldt)

The Ämari Air Base in Estonia was once a busy hub of the Soviet Air Force. There’s a cemetery in a forested area of the base. Eric Grundhauser of Atlas Obscura reports that during the Soviet occupation of Estonia, some pilots were buried beneath the vertical stabilizer fins of their aircraft. Grundhauser writes that “the effect almost looks as though a squadron of the ships are burrowing through the ground with their fins above the surface like sharks.”
