Scooby Dooki - Mario, Where Are You? Rover Rere Ruigi!

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Scooby Dooki by Arinesart

Of all the suits Mario had discovered on his journeys across the Mushroom Kingdom none made him feel as warm and fuzzy as the Scooby suit. The suit also made Mario perpetually hungry, incredibly good at scrambling his feet in a funny way, and it gave him the power to see ghosts and things that go boo in the night. Mario keeps the suit stored away until a situation arises where he needs to devour a giant sandwich in a single bite or is looking to lose a brood of bad guys by running through a bunch of doors!

Suit up in some animated fun with this Scooby Dooki t-shirt by Arinesart, it's Rooby-riffic fun!

Weird Al Performs Yoda With Talented Autistic Teens, and It's Beyond Awesome

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Jodi DiPiazza
, diagnosed as autistic at age two, is a talented musician. At fourteen she is a student at the Mannes College of Music, where she studies classical and jazz piano, voice, music theory, composition, guitar and songwriting. When Jodi was only nine years of age, she wrote a song called “Heroes of Autism” for Toys R Us, which helped raise over three million dollars to support research and assistance for children with autism.

At the 2012 Night of Too Many Stars, then 11-year-old Jodi did a rendition of “Firework” in a duet with Katy Perry and got a standing ovation. In this video, Jodi returns to sing "Yoda” with Weird Al, and it's fantastic! Toward the end of the song, a group called Actionplay Chorus, made up of children with autism, joined Jodi and Al. Don't miss it. -Via Uproxx

Anti-Paparazzi Clothing Makes Photographing Celebrities Hopeless

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 03:00 AM PDT

It's hard for celebrities like Chris Evans, Shia LaBoeuf, and Miss Cellania to go out and enjoy their daily lives without photographers from gossip rags shoving cameras at them and snapping pictures. They often want to just be left alone while in public, which is why Chris Holmes, a professional DJ who often works with celebrities, invented FlashbackPhotobomber clothing.

Tiny glass bubbles embedded in the clothing are invisible to the naked eye. But they flash back at cameras using flash bulbs, ruining the resulting images

Paris Chic: Boob Bags

Paris Fashion Week 2015 recently introduced a well-built accessory to the world: the breast handbag. The man behind this tata tote, which may give extra incentive to certain muggers, is fashion designer Christophe Lemaire. Lemaire is a big name in fashion, having previously designed for Hermès. He may be a marketing genius as well for walking a pair of headlights down the runway with his otherwise classic clothing collection. The boob has certainly generated the buzz.

8 of History's Greatest Cat Ladies

Posted: 09 Mar 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Not all cat ladies are hermits or animal hoarders, locked away with more cats than they can take care of. Many of us have other everyday activities, and some prominent cat lovers have even changed the world! When you look at notable women from history, quite a few of them loved their cats dearly, like nurse Clara Barton.

Clara Barton, the famous nurse and founder of the Red Cross, was an animal lover with a particular affinity for felines. During the Civil War, Barton earned the nickname “Angel of the Battlefield,” and in appreciation for her selfless work, U.S. Senator Schuyler Colfax sent Barton a kitten. Barton’s most beloved cat was the black and white Tommy, who kept her company for 17 years. A portrait of Tommy painted by Barton’s friend and fellow nurse Antoinette Margot still hangs in the Barton house in Glen Echo, Maryland.

Tommy’s portrait is shown here. Barton was far from the only woman who supplemented her busy life with feline companions. Read about seven others in a list at mental_floss.

A Tumblr Dedicated To Kindle Cover Disasters

The world of digital media is wide open for new creators to share their vision with the world, and many people are choosing to self publish their stories these days instead of dealing with a publisher.

Putting your story out there by yourself is great, but choosing to also create your own cover art, which is still a big factor in whether people will buy your book or not, can negatively affect sales.

(Image Link)

If the cover art is lousy, offensive or too minimal it may turn customers off, but if it’s a total disaster it might end up on a Tumblr called Kindle Cover Disasters!

Like purveyors of fine literary cheese, the folks behind Kindle Cover Disasters are giving these bottom of the barrel works of cover art a home and an audience, so we can all savor the flavor!

Giant Methane Storms on Uranus

Posted: 08 Mar 2015 10:00 PM PDT

There are things happening on the gas giant we call Uranus. The odd blue planet tilted on its side is hosting giant methane storms. Phys Org tells us about it.

In August 2014 a group led by Imke de Pater pointed the Keck telescope at Uranus and were a little bit surprised to see storms raging. It wasn't as though clouds haven't been seen before, but the clouds they spotted last year were very much brighter than any seen before. The fact that the storms are bright in the methane spectrum isn't a surprise – Uranus, and its neighbour Neptune, are pretty much just big balls of methane, water and ammonia (but it does make for a snigger-worthy headline).

They’ve got a lot more to explain about methane and Uranus, so go read the rest if you like. This item was found via the subreddit /r/science, where they have this rule:

Farmer Uses Hot Tub to Save Frozen Baby Bull

Posted: 08 Mar 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Dean Gangwer is a cattle farmer in Rossville, Indiana. One morning, he found that one of his cows had snuck off to give birth by herself. He found the newborn calf almost frozen to death in a pile of snow.

Gangwer placed the calf on his ATV, then rushed him back home. The bull was near death, so it was essential to quickly bring his body temperature up. A hot bath would do it, but most bath tubs can't accommodate a full-size calf.

Gangwer's solution was to turn on his outdoor hot tub. He climbed in with the calf and warmed him up. Leroy, as they've named him, has made a full recovery. ABC 6 reports:

A day and a half later, Leroy's body temperature was back to normal and he even nursed for the first time Friday morning.

"Leroy's officially done hot-tubbing. Some sunbathing is definitely in his future out in the grass, but definitely his hot tub days are done," Gangwer said.

His next step should be to travel back in time to prevent the mother cow from escaping in the first place.

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by thebluelemur

Great works of art have been prized by humanity throughout history. We build fantastic architecture to house our artworks, such as the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, and the Guggenheims of New York and Spain. Collectors spend millions every year making acquisitions. Patrons make trips all over the world to visit the museums.

So how could one possibly improve on a Monet, Renoir or Seurat? Lend them superpowers! At Worth1000, people are artfully doing just that, and in competition with each other. See a ton of fun entries here (and at the bottom of that page there are additional links). -Via Guff

What Necessary Adult Skills Were You Never Taught Growing Up?

Posted: 08 Mar 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Lifehacker asked this question of its readers: What necessary adult skills were you never taught growing up? The site was properly called out for asking it as a call for article ideas, but that’s not really a sin. It’s kind of related to a discussion thread we once posted titled Buying Bread that asked what surprised you when you got out on your own away from family. The answers Lifehacker got were about personal finance, personal hygiene, sex, taxes, health, job hunting, and auto mechanics, among many other things. A thread at Metafilter has even more.

The first thing I thought of was computers: I knew nothing of computers because no one had any. Even in college you couldn’t touch one unless you were taking one of the three computer language classes. But I don’t have to worry about teaching computer skills to my kids. I do worry about what else they don’t know. They can write cursive, read a map, budget their money, and cook better than their peers, but maybe I’m overlooking something. What else should be on the list?

Princess Leia in Classic Star Trek Cosplay

Posted: 08 Mar 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Master cosplayer Malicous Cosplay, who recently redressed Princess Leia as Streetfighter's Chun-Li, once also depicted Princess Leia as a Starfleet officer from classic Star Trek. Ensign Organa dresses in white and wears hair buns, as in Episode IV. She carries a phaser in addition to a blaster.

My favorite part of the cosplay is imagining Chewbacca as a tribble:

They Came Down In Pairs - Minions With The Munchies

They Came Down In Pairs by DauntlessDS

They were bananas who wore pajamas, innocent victims who were caught up in a game of home invasion that would leave three of them dead and one seriously wounded. Small creatures called minions had invaded their home, and their appetites could only be sated by chunks of sweet banana! Would those pill shaped pests have acted like predators if the victims had been plums or peaches in pajamas? Probably...

Bring some bright yellow horror to your geeky wardrobe with this They Came Down In Pairs t-shirt by DauntlessDS, it's a delicious way to celebrate the cartoons you loved as a kid and the ones you love now!

Ten Internet Jokes That Got People Arrested

Posted: 08 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Everyone makes a stupid mistake once in a while, some more frequently (and more stupidly) than others. In today's digital culture, a tasteless joke that might once have netted the teller a few disapproving glances is now often relayed over social media and broadcast far and wide. This can get people into a world of trouble.

One unfortunate pair of jokers who got far more than the laughs they bargained for are UK-based couple Leigh van Bryan and Emily Bunting, shown in the photo above. Prior to leaving on a 2012 vacation to Los Angeles, van Bryan, an Irishman living in Britain, tweeted the following message:

"Free this week, for quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America? and 3 weeks today, we're totally in LA p****** people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin' Marilyn Monroe up!"

When they landed at LAX, federal Homeland Security officials detained the couple, confiscated their passports and questioned them for five hours. In spite of them telling the feds that "destroy America" is slang for getting drunk and rowdy, and in spite of them explaining that the Marilyn Monroe reference was from the animated American television show Family Guy, the authorities remained stone faced and serious. Van Bryan and Bunting maintained that the authorities searched their luggage, telling them they were looking for spades and shovels that would enable them to dig up a body.

Leigh was treated to a full body search before the two were handcuffed and jailed overnight in separate cells. The next morning they were put on a plane back to the UK, without so much as an adieu.

Read about nine more situations in which people got into hot water as a result of their internet usage in this article.

Love Has No Labels

This video from the Ad Council shows what happens when we see what people do before we see how they look. Learn more about the Love Has No Labels campaign at its website or at Facebook. You can read the stories of the people who participated in the video at Buzzfeed. What I didn’t find was an explanation of the technical stunt. We can assume that they did not use a real x-ray machine to show the skeletons. It was most likely motion-sensing technology like what is used in a Kinect game system.

A Blacksmith's Surprisingly Human Statues Consisting of Nails

Posted: 08 Mar 2015 08:00 AM PDT

In each piece, there's a full story. You could easily write a page of dialogue from each one.

Tobbe Malm, a blacksmith and photographer in Oslo, Norway, calls his series Bolt Poetry. He reshapes nails and screws into forms that are strikingly reminiscent of human beings. They're simple, yet filled with dramatic tension.

All of the nails have a history, too. Malm found them at an old farm in Bergslagen, Sweden. Pulled from the wood, they share their stories.

Pattern Behavior

No Susie

I don’t want to play yo-yos

I’m into doorknobs now

You’re just a city boy

Your pants don’t even go in your shoes

Heh city boy

You’re from the city

The artwork on the covers of sewing patterns is always supposed to showcase the clothing, not the models. But the models were sometimes drawn in ways that make you wonder what they’re thinking. Wonder no more! The fairly new blog Pattern Behavior puts dialogue to those images. The captions are humorously odd, but they go perfectly with the humorously odd art. -via Everlasting Blort
