Unlikely Likely Match-Up: Smaug the Magnificent vs. Balerion the Black Dread Today's battle is between two deadly dragons, brought to you from the respective universes of two great novel series. In the somewhat recent history of Middle-Earth, Smaug the Magnificent was one of the greatest of dangers to exist in the realm. Dubbed the "chiefest and greatest of calamities," Smaug was a fearsome dragon whose strength went relatively unrivaled. His immense body practically glowed with heat and was all but invulnerable to traditional weapons due to his armor-like scales which were as hard as diamonds. Like all dragons, Smaug was capable of breathing flame. His scarlet and green fires were so potent as to reduce men to ash. In his own words, Smaug was "fire and death." Comparatively, in the distant past of Westeros, a fearsome dragon was used to forge a mighty dynastic rule that would last over 300 years. Balerion the Black Dread was the personal dragon of Aegon I Targaryen. This massive creature was so large that he could swallow mammoths whole, and his teeth were the size of swords. So great was his size that his wingspan alone would cause villages to fall under his shadow when he took to the sky. A great dark beast, Balerion breathed fire as black as his scales, and the flames were hot enough to melt steel and stone. Compared to Smaug, Balerion is bigger, while Smaug possesses a mind capable of complex thought and reason. It is a beastly brawl between dragons in today's match-up, leaving you with a difficult decision. Which dragon wins and which dragon loses?
