The Dr. Seuss House--A Towering Home in Alaska

Posted: 04 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Jovell Rennie)

It's an oddly-shaped towering structure that looks like the product of a children's book illustrator, not an architect. That's why local residents call it the Dr. Seuss House. They explain that it was built shortly after a forest fire stripped the area of trees. That deforestation gave the owner a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside.

But the trees grew back. So the owner built another storey onto the house. The trees grew higher, so he built another one.

The eventual result was this elaborate tower stretching into the sky. You can see more photos and a video of this wonderful house at Colossal.

Hudson: “Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?”
Vasquez: “No. Have you?”

Sometimes when things are tense in a movie or tv show (or even in real life), a bit of comic relief is a welcome element. One surefire way to get a laugh is to make a sarcastic or derogatory remark at another's expense. The more of a jerk the character on the receiving end is, the bigger the laugh. Shown here are a couple of examples from science fiction and fantasy television and film. See more in this article.

X-Wings Is a Great Cars Parody

Posted: 04 Apr 2015 12:00 AM PDT

Disney's 2006 animated movie Cars was a huge hit, so it's no surprise that the company has turned it into a franchise that includes 2 sequels and 2 spin-off movies featuring not Cars, but Planes.

What other vehicles should Disney's Pixar unit tackle next? Pedal boats? Zambonis? Street sweeper trucks? Those might work. But since Disney now owns Star Wars, it might as well produce a movie showing living X-wing fighters.

Big Bee Studio produced this parody of Cars showing Rebel Alliance X-wing fighters cracking jokes, singing songs, and, most importantly, destroying the Death Star. Opposing them is a TIE fighter with the voice of Darth Vader.

WWE's Finn Balor Sporting Some Very Scary Venom Bodypaint

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Professional wrestlers are paid to play larger-than-life roles that read well no matter how far away from the ring the fans are sitting, and their characters wouldn’t be complete without a signature style of dress.

WWE NXT's Finn Balor is no stranger to playing big roles, and he enjoys sporting "war paint" into the ring to make a big impression on both his opponent and the audience.

He has donned a variety of superheroic looks, from Carnage to the Joker, but when he saw the amazing bodypaintings being created by Emily Anderson he just had to go under the brush.

Imagine coming face to maw with that in the ring!

Twenty of the Most Terrifying Clowns from Film and Television

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Coulrophobia. It's defined as an "abnormal fear of clowns." Somewhere in between the time of Poltergeist and It, fear of clowns became much more of a "thing." How do you feel about clowns? Do you find them at all creepy? While I'm not a fan of the idea of mimes or clowns, they've never scared me. I have a friend, however, who can't stand the sight of them and is truly startled by every clown, even those that aren't made up to look scary.

The article linked below lists twenty frightening clowns from television and film. The clown shown in the photo above, however, is unlike the others in that he isn't a fictional character. Aside from biopics that would feature simulations of the photo above, he's only been seen on television via documentaries and the news. He's deranged serial killer John Wayne Gacy, executed by the state of Illinois in 1994 for the monstrously brutal killings of 33 males. If you're unfamiliar with the case, read about Gacy and his clown alter ego he called Pogo, and you'll see why he's absolutely terrifying.

See which fictional clown characters from film and television this article rated the scariest. What do you think, readers?

Posting bits of paper with funny stuff printed on them is also a great way to troll the world, bringing a smile and a quizzical “whuh?!” to those who see your handiwork hanging from a power pole or bulletin board.

University Jackie Chan isn't real, but this photo (minus the Jackie Chan meme) is. Sichuan Normal University, a teachers' college in China, has a bus station on campus with this sign. It's not named after the famed actor from Hong Kong. This name is probably the result of a computer-generated translation. You can read more about it at Kotaku.

Man Rescued After 66 Days Lost At Sea

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 05:00 PM PDT

The U.S. Coast Guard saved a man adrift in a
sailboat last night after he survived a 66-day ordeal at the mercy of Atlantic Ocean waves and weather. Louis Jordan was rescued some 200 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Jordan ran into trouble after setting sail on a fishing expedition when a storm capsized his sailboat, broke the boat's mast and damaged his communication gear. He told a reporter,

"I was planning on catching some big ones," Jordan recalled. "On the way there, my boat capsized. I was actually sleeping, that's when it happened. The whole boat had turned around and I was flying through the air somersaulting and the ceiling was the floor and the floor was the ceiling and this side was the other side and everything was upside down and backwards."

Medical Student Uses Candy to Illustrate Anatomy

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Mike McCormick is a man of both art and science. He's a medical student at Glasgow University. He's learning anatomy and physiology in detail. He's also teaching the public about these topics at the same time. Candy Anatomy is his ongoing project to diagram the workings of the human body using candy. For example, in the above collage, McCormick uses cookies and what appear to be taffy strips to show the flow of waste through the large intestine.

It's "eye candy." Get it?

The human hand.

Human skin.

Sydney Addresses the School Board

Fourth-grader Sydney Smoot appeared before the Hernando County (Florida) school board to say a few things about the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment) tests she and her classmates will be subjected to. This kid has a bright future ahead of her. She’s cute as a button, but that’s not as important as the points she brings up in her prepared speech. You have to be really suspicious about a test that makes a kid sign a no-discussion contract and for which neither the child nor the teachers benefit from learning the results. Pandas' Passion Pulverizes Past Record for Sexual Duration

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 02:00 PM PDT

These hilarious smiley panda pictures are of giant pandas Lu Lu and Zhen Zhen, whose seven minute and 45 second sex session has shattered all records of panda sexual endurance. According to the People Daily, the happy couple is the current record holder for length of panda sex; their panda peers Yi Bao and Jin Xin only got busy for one minute and 20 seconds, and pandas in general are considered challenged when it comes to procreation. This is because female pandas have only one estrous cycle each year, lasting anywhere from two to seven days.

You Can Turn an Old Piano into an Aquarium

Man Spots Himself In Wife's Home Video Shot Sixteen Years Before They Met

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

When you run into someone from home while visiting a faraway place we say “gee, it’s a small world”, but what do you call it when you unintentionally film someone on home video then meet and marry that unknown person sixteen years later?

You can call it one crazy coincidence, but Ryan and Jourdan Spencer prefer to think of it as fate.

(YouTube Link)

The Spencers were watching old home movies they’d recently digitized when they discovered that their first meeting didn’t take place on a fateful blind date ten years ago, but rather at Sesame Place amusement park when they were kids back in 1988.

Jourdan's family was behind the lens back in '88 when a bespectacled young Ryan entered from stage left and set Ryan's theory in motion:

...people come into our lives when they’re meant to and leave when they’re meant to, and obviously we were supposed to meet again. Our paths crossed more than once.

The Definitive Oral History of 1980s Digital Icon Max Headroom

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 11:00 AM PDT

In the early 1980s, the fairly new Channel 4 in Britain wanted to show music videos like MTV, but they didn’t want to copy the music video channel. Maybe they could come up with something different from the veejays who hosted MTV. Maybe graphics? Maybe a boring guy in a suit? Maybe an artificial intelligence rendered in computer graphics? Ha! It was a ridiculous idea, because in 1985 computer graphics couldn’t render a character. But what a great idea! The fact that it was impossible didn’t stop Max Headroom’s creators. They went ahead with a show called 20 Minutes Into the Future, which became a phenomenon. Max Headroom, the character, was a computer-generated avatar of a television personality who was in coma, glitches and all, but to get that character to TV, the computer graphics were faked by makeup and lighting.

Matt Frewer ACTOR For a time it was... I won't say it was infuriating, but it was frustrating — you wanted to go, "That's me, that's me, it’s not a computer-generated man." But of course they wanted to swear me to secrecy because otherwise anybody could make a computer-generated man if they knew that it was as easy as putting on all this make-up.

John Humphreys PROSTHETICS DESIGNER I have to say, it was being presented as computer graphics, and I had people even say to me, who worked in some big companies in Britain, "Oh, you'll soon be out of a job, look at this, it's all done with computer graphics!"

Peter Litten VISUAL EFFECTS ARTIST It was very galling. It won a BAFTA for graphics, and of course other than a few lines, there weren't any graphics. A few wobbly lines. And they refused to enter us in the make-up [category] because they didn't want anyone to know it was make-up.

I'm trying to remember how long the make-up took. Probably four hours of make-up? When you get into the swing of it, we probably got it down to three hours or so in the end.

By 1987, the show had crossed the pond and was now called Max Headroom. Although American actor Matt Frewer still played the title character as he did for Channel 4, the show was so Americanized that viewers had no clue as to its British roots -although they already knew the character from his ads for Coke and other products. The show was revolutionary, not only in its style, but in that it was quite critical of the television industry. Max Headroom burned bright and quickly, and left a mark on the history of TV. Read a fascinating oral history of the concept and character by its creators and producers, at The Verge. -via Digg

A Collection of Photos Of Cops Being Awesome

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 10:00 AM PDT

No matter how you feel about the police system in general, it's hard to deny that it can be hard to be a cop. Whether it's getting in the middle of a domestic violence dispute, witnessing a horrific crime scene or dealing with the painful monotomy of a small town with practically no crime, police have to deal with a lot.

Of course, some police have a sense of humor (and a soft spot) too and these great pictures on Mashable prove it.

30 Fast & Furious Facts for the Ultimate Fan

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Furious 7 opens nationwide today. The seventh installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, these movies have a dedicated fan base, but even true fans can learn something new about it. For example, let’s go back to the very first movie, The Fast and the Furious (2001).

1. THE STORY WAS INSPIRED BY A MAGAZINE ARTICLE.

The May 1998 issue of Vibe magazine featured an article by Ken Li titled “Racer X” that chronicled illegal street racing in Queens, New York. Producers optioned the article for a movie adaptation that became The Fast and the Furious.

2. THE FILM'S TITLE WAS PURCHASED FROM LEGENDARY B-MOVIE DIRECTOR ROGER CORMAN.

Throughout filming, the movie had the working title Redline—which in racing refers to the maximum rate of speed a car can go—before the filmmakers settled on calling it The Fast & The Furious. There was only one problem: That title was owned by B-movie director Roger Corman, who produced a racing movie of the same name in 1955. Instead of having the filmmakers pay for the rights to the name, Corman traded the movie title for some stock footage owned by Universal Studios.

3. THE MOVIE HAS GARNERED SOME FAMILIAR AND UNFAMILIAR COMPARISONS.

The filmmakers of The Fast and the Furious pitched the movie as West Side Story with cars instead of singing, and also incorporated themes and situations found in movies like the surfing action classic Point Break and the undercover crime drama Donnie Brasco.

Director Rob Cohen modeled the film’s third act chases through the Los Angeles hills on similar San Francisco-set scenes in the 1968 car-chase classic Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen. Cohen loved the movie so much that he cast actor Paul Walker because he thought he resembled Bullitt’s lead actor.

The trivia list at mental floss is actually a set of lists, with all six previous movies represented. The films aren’t in chronological order, so new viewers will find it helpful to understand the characters if you’re watching them all for the first time or heading out to see Furious 7 today.

Comedian and late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel had a great idea. He asked viewers to play a simple prank on people in their lives: offer them coffee, then say “April Fools” or “I did nothing to your coffee.”

This immediately raises suspicions. “What did you do to my coffee?!”

Absolutely nothing.

6 Secret Tips for Cruise Ships

Posted: 03 Apr 2015 05:00 AM PDT

When air travel took off in the 1960s, it looked at first like ocean liners were about to go the way of the horse and buggy. But then, the quick-thinking shipping industry adapted. With a few tweaks to onboard services and some smart marketing, they reinvented their fleets. No longer was a vast ship a way to get somewhere else- out was the destination itself. The idea took: More than 20 million people embarked on seafaring vacations in 2013. If you’re planning to join them this year, there are a few things you should know.

(Image credit: Jim G from Silicon Valley, CA, USA)

1. Prepare to eat a ton. How do you keep several thousand high-paying passengers happy? Massive provisioning, of course. According to one 2012 report, the Disney Magic cruise carried 10,000 pounds of chicken and 71,500 eggs for a weeklong jaunt for 2,700 people. Another boat stowed 2,000 pounds of shrimp. Rest assured that nothing is wasted. Ingredients left over from dinner later appear in the salad bar.

(Image credit: Flickr user Ricky Brigante)

2. Choose the room with no view. It’s understandable that cruise lines would promote rooms with balconies and portholes as the hottest spots onboard. But the best rooms in the ship are the ones in the lower middle section with no views at all, especially if you’re trying to avoid seasickness. The center of a ship acts as a fulcrum, so when the seas toss and pitch, a central room on a lower level could be the most steady- in addition to being pocketbook friendly.

3. Use the hand sanitizer! Along with the complimentary beverages, antibacterials are supplied in liberal quantities. Since close quarters and occasional sanitary mishaps can make ships a hive of quick spreading illness, cruise lines also employ onboard doctors. (And in case things go really wrong, they’re also equipped with small morgues, typically capable of holding up to three bodies.)

4. Do not read the man overboard list. If you’re the nervous type, steer clear of this Cruisepage.com compendium, which tracks the location of everyone who’s fallen off a ship since 2000. Some of these people -passengers and crewmembers- were rescued. Many were not.

(Image credit: Flickr user Corey Seeman)

5. Enjoy the sunset from the bow. Big ships trail a wake of treated sewage. According to a 2009 report, a typical one-week voyage by a medium-sized vessel can generate 210,000 gallons of human sewage (or “black water,” which is treated onboard and expelled as “gray water”), enough to fill about 10 backyard swimming pools, and another 1,000,000 gallons from sinks, baths, and laundry, also known as gray water.

6. Raise a glass to the crew. (Or they’ll do it for you.) “There’s definitely a lot of drinking and partying,” a restaurant employee who spent 10 months working on a major cruise line says, “We were all drunk all the time.”
