Big Hero 3PO - The Stars Look Very Different Today

Posted: 12 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Big Hero 3PO by Djkopet

Luke was looking to add a new droid to his entourage, but he'd decided this time he would only add one that had max medical capabilities, in case he lost another limb in a light saber battle. He discovered a unit being sold by Jawas that looked kinda like a 3PO unit only much more plump, and when he approached the droid he was amazed to discover that it already knew his name. Fascinated by the unit dubbed "big hero bay" Luke began to haggle with the little droid salesman, which generally involved a little force-ful persuasion...

The Millennium Falcon Trapped inside a Giant Chocolate Egg

Posted: 12 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

The geeky food blog Sweet & Geek used a giant chocolate Easter egg (translation) to recreate what I suspect is the space slug scene from The Empire Strikes Back. The interior of the asteroid is filled with sponge cake, creamy frosting, and butter cream shaped to look like grass or tentacles. If you do not have the original Millennium Falcon available, you can use a chocolate version, as Sweet & Geek did.

Pacapong: An Insane Game Mashup

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Do you love retro video games, but find them too easy to play after all these years? Maybe if you played them all at the same time, it would be more challenging. That’s what Pacapong does: it combines Pac-Man, Pong, and Space Invaders into one game that will put your concentration and dexterity to the test.

To increase your score-bar in Pacapong you simply collect as many pills as possible within the time limit. Once fired your Pacman can be controlled to a small degree, but will always be inclined to heading towards your opponents side. To make things a little trickier (and more awesome) you also have to contend with ghosts, hit them and you’ll lose a chunk of your score bar (unless you pick up a power pill). To make things yet even more trickier (and indeed more awesome), you also have to contend with Space Invaders who descend your side of the screen whenever your opponent collects them – with some careful manoeuvring you can even shoot them with the pills you collect with Pacman.

It seems insanely complicated to me, but I still find those old games challenging individually. You can see a video of gameplay at YouTube. Pacapong is a free download. -via Unreality

Artist Recreates Traditional Chinese Painting Using Rollerblades

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Haisu Tian is an artist in Fremont, California. One of her recent projects puts a new spin on traditional Chinese ink painting. In Landskating, Tian composed an enormous landscape on sheets of rice paper. To apply the ink, she didn’t use a paintbrush, but rollerblades.

Tian’s rollerblades were modified to stream ink over the front wheels from a reservoir mounted in front of the toes. She described it as a full-body experience of composition:

My whole body is involved and I produce all kinds of ink landscapes, such creation is full of power, speed and rhythm.

You can see Tian at work in this video showing the creation of her landskated painting, which measures 43 feet by 20 feet. You can read more about her at the Daily Mail.

Ideas on Adding Color to Your Home Where You Least Expect It

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Often people think that, to make their home beautiful, they need to buy "stuff." Stuff like trendy furniture. Quirky occasional tables. Concept lighting and expensive tchotchkes. All of the above can cost a pretty penny. Yet a gallon of good quality paint is around $30 and can affect the style of a space in a bigger way than any other interior design element.

This article talks about painting as an integral part of the design of a space, but not necessarily painting walls. Read it to get some ideas on smaller, more unusual paint projects that make a sizable visual splash, such as the inside of the bookcase shown above.

The US Air Force's Rubber Chicken Test

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 04:00 PM PDT

A member of the Honor Guard of the United States Air Force must, at all times, maintain a somber and professional bearing. Airmen who wish to join must pass many tests to qualify to join the Honor Guard. Among them is the feared Rubber Chicken Test.

The airmen must remain rigidly at attention, unwavering, while instructors honk a rubber chicken in front of their faces. The chicken talks to them. But the airmen must never, ever waver. They must never smile. They must stare ahead, unmoved by the rubber chicken.

Say "Hello" To Kaika & Kelekona

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 02:00 PM PDT

We love our reader's pets, which is why when fan Jenn Hyland posted this picture in response to our Facebook post featuring Pug-ster eggs, I was all too excited to share her little babies with everyone.

Here's Kelekona's first Halloween costume.

And here's her cheer-ful second Halloween costume.

You can tell she was a hit by how many candies she got -especially those precious full-sized bars.

Kelekona traded in the cheer uniform for some pig skin for her third Halloween, when she was joined by Kaika, who celebrated her first Halloween in stripe-tastic style.

Nowadays, the duo doesn't just dress up for Halloween. Here they are in some sweet summer duds as part of an apartment wide costume contest.

Thanks to Jenn for letting us share her beautiful little lizards -and for anyone out there who wants to see their favorite pet on the site, feel free to send your photos to jill@neatorama.com!

Lil Thrones

As it has been done many times for more innocuous TV shows, George R.R. Martin was easily convinced to take his very adult stories from Game of Thrones and spin them off into an animated version aimed at children. Luckily, it will most likely only be one episode, as it was produced by Team Coco. Contains adult subject matter and mild spoilers if you know the characters. Honestly, this is not for children. -via Uproxx

23 of the Weirdest Natural Phenomena around the World

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 10:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Mike Petroff)

What do these clouds look like? The wakes of torpedoes streaming through clear water? The burrows of space whales? It’s a bizarre sight. If you want to witness it in person, you’ll have to visit the Gulf of Carpentaria on the northern coast of Australia because that’s the only spot in the world where Morning Glory clouds consistently appear. NASA explains how they form:

Long, horizontal, circulating tubes of air might form when flowing, moist, cooling air encounters an inversion layer, an atmospheric layer where air temperature atypically increases with height. These tubes and surrounding air could cause dangerous turbulence for airplanes when clear. Morning Glory clouds can reportedly achieve an airspeed of 60 kilometers per hour over a surface with little discernible wind.

Morning Glory clouds are 1 of 23 bizarre but completely real meteorological phenomenon rounded up by When on Earth.

The Walking Dead - There's Never A Reef Around When You Need One

The Walking Dead by Sophie Corrigan

It's hard to tell what Rick is looking for when he starts shouting "Coral!", but maybe he was a marine biologist in his pre-apocalyptic life? Even his own son Carl doesn't know what to do when daddy starts shouting "Coral!", but like a good son he puts up with his dad's strange speech impediments because he really doesn't have a choice. The walking dead don't make for very good company, but at least zombies don't go around shouting "Coral!" when they're hundreds of miles from the ocean!

Add this The Walking Dead t-shirt by Sophie Corrigan to your geeky wardrobe and watch your fellow fans grunt with wholehearted approval!

200 Years After Tambora, Some Unusual Effects Linger

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 08:00 AM PDT

The biggest volcanic eruption in 10,000 years happened when Mount Tambora exploded on April 10, 1815. The eruption killed thousands of Indonesian villagers immediately, and the effects of disaster went global and lasted for years. Some 36 cubic miles of ash and rock were flung into the air, and a lot of remained there as particles that encircled the earth.

Tambora was “a tragedy of nations masquerading as a spectacular sunset,” Gillen D’Arcy Wood of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, writes in Tambora: The Eruption That Changed the World. Those aerosol particles stayed in the stratosphere for two years, blocking sunlight and causing havoc on Earth’s climate. The year 1816 was so cold that it snowed in New England in June, and the period became known as “the year without a summer.” Grain shortages and famine occurred across the globe, and Tambora’s far-reaching death toll would eventually claim more than 100,000 according to some estimates.

Our world would be different today if the Tambora disaster had never happened. Smithsonian has a list of seven of the effects Tambora had on history, including weather patterns, disease, human migration, food, and even art and literature.

Tintype Portraits of Hollywood Celebrities

Kevin Smith

The Nineteenth Century photographic technique of tintype suggests that we're looking into the distant past--a bygone era in which people stood stiffly for formal, dignified portraits. But these aren't images from a century and a half ago. Photographer Victoria Will attended the Sundance Film Festival and captured famous celebrities from our time using tintype photogrpahy. The results are a fascinating juxtoposition of different eras.

Nevermind the iWatch--You Want an Apple II Watch!

Posted: 11 Apr 2015 06:00 AM PDT

Apple's smartwatch, colloquially called the iWatch, promises to be a highly capable computer that fits around your wrist. It'll be commercially available in just a couple weeks.

But old school computer users may prefer something a bit more retro. Do you remember the Apple II computer line? It was the first computer I ever used back in the early 1980s. The Apple II introduced an entire generation into personal computing. And now, thanks to Instructables member Aleator777, you can have one on your wrist.

His Apple II Watch looks like a tiny version of the original desktop computer. Like a lot of computers from back in those days, you'll have to build one. His step-by-step instructions, design schematics, and code should get you started.
