Stanley Cup Made of Bacon

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

In 1892, Lord Frederick Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, donated a great silver cup the best hockey team in Canada. It has been ever since a treasured prize in that sport. But the shortsighted Lord Stanley did not anticipate that future generations of hockey fans would look toward trophies as a food source.

That is where Bar Brutus in Montreal comes in. Its bacon engineers developed this replica of the Stanley Cup out of 20 pounds of bacon. This is an exploration of a developing theme. Go to Bar Brutus’s website and scroll down to see its food menu, which consists primarily of bacony goodness.

16 Wonderful Barbecue Styles around the World (Other Than Texan)

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 02:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Max Besser)

Texas-style barbecue is, of course, the finest in the world. The best of this emerges from my father-in-law’s backyard pit.

But other barbecue methods, with the exception of Memphis-style, are edible, if not enjoyable. Among them is the asado style of the southern cone of South America. Barbecue dinners in this style, When on Earth informs us:

. . . consist of embutidos (chorizos, black puddings, and the like) and varieties of meat grilled over charcoal made of native trees. The meat cooked for asado is not marinated but only salted.

You can learn about 15 other barbecue styles from around the world at When on Earth.

The First Man to Descend into Turkmenistan’s Door to Hell

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 01:00 AM PDT

The Darvaza Crater in Ahal Province, Turkmenistan, is known as the “Door to Hell.” The story goes that Soviet petroleum engineers created the hole in 1971 while looking for gas. The collapsed crater spew dangerous gas, so they ignited it, thinking the gas would soon burn off. Over forty years later, the crater is still burning.

In 2014, explorer George Kourounis descended to the bottom of the crater, protected by a fireproof suit. Even he was surprised by the heat of the crater. Kourounis didn’t stay long, but he brought back biological samples from the bottom. Kourounis talked to Scribol about the adventure, and shared dozen of pictures from the expedition.

RIP Lord Nelson, The Only Horse Ever Penalized in a Football Game

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Rutgers Equine Science Center)

The Scarlet Knight is the mascot of Rutgers University in New Jersey. The red-plated knight rides a horse at college football games. Lord Nelson, a horse that carried that knight for many years, passed away on Sunday at the age of 42.

Lord Nelson began his career as a police horse, joining the mounted unit of the university police in 1978. After many years on patrol duty there, he began to carry the Scarlet Knight at football games. At a 1994 football game against West Point, Lord Nelson broke loose and dashed across the field. A referee penalized him for unsportsmanlike conduct. This is the only time that a horse has received such a dishonor.

Solo Recital Dance on One Leg

Eight-year-old Alissa Sizemore has taken dance lessons since she was four. In May of 2014, a truck ran over her right foot, and it was amputated below the knee. She was back in the dance studio even before she received her prosthetic leg. Less than a year after the accident, Alissa performed a solo at her dance school’s recital. The song is "Try" by Colbie Caillat, which Alissa says is an inspiration to her. Watch as she starts off dancing with her new leg, and then removes it for more freedom. Marie Hunt of Spring Green, Wisconsin was supposed to graduate from high school in 1928. But she had to drop out of school after the eighth grade in order to take care of her younger siblings. Later, she worked as a store clerk, a childcare provider, and owned a business with her husband.

The high school diploma remained unfinished business. She wanted it. And on Friday, River Valley High School awarded Ms. Hunt one in a ceremony at the assisted living facility where she lives.

As if that wasn't bad enough, now one Redditor has shared these images of a poor, bound T-rex being towed down the road as though it's just a big hunk of plastic.

Will the madness ever stop?!? End dinosaur cruelty!

13 Videos of Dogs vs. Drones

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Once, dogs lived in peace. They slept at the feet of their humans, ate from the tables of humans, and enjoyed belly rubs on demand. It was a golden age for all canine kind.

But then the robots came: bizarre things that flew in the air, hovering menacingly over dogs. They were not normal featheries. No, these creatures were not alive like you and I. But still they moved as though they were.

Now dogs and drones are locked in a bitter struggle. Only one side will prevail. At Fusion, you can see 13 videos with animated .gifs of dogs interacting with drones, including this Golden Retriever taking on a quadcopter.

Needle Felted Cat Head

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 06:00 PM PDT

You will be forgiven to think that someone Photoshopped a cat’s head onto a human’s body. The head is a little big, but that’s because it had to fit over the human head. It’s a handmade cat head.

This creepily realistic cat head was made from sheep’s wool felt by teacher Housetu Sato and his students of the Japan School of Wool Art (nihonyoumoua-togakuen). It’s the only school in the world to boast a specialist cat-making course where students learn the art of creating realistic-looking “needle felted cats”.

Sato-sensei is an expert in this niche field and has even published a series of books on how to make realistic felt animals. He instructs students from complete beginners onwards in this special art, and below you can see them modelling their impressive but disconcerting creation.

You want to try it on? You can, if you attend an art exhibit at the Tokyo Museum of Art, where this cat head will be on display starting this weekend. See more pictures at the Cat Doll Blog. -via Uproxx

Pet Owners Who Know Their Pets Are Jerks

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 05:00 PM PDT

I love my little 20-pound pooch, but saying "he's a handful" is a complete understatement. In fact, I have to head to Home Depot later today to grab materials to fix my back fence that he's totally torn up. Just look at that smug face he made when I caught him blogging under my name.

And, of course, I'm not alone in having a pet that's a total jerk. This recent AskReddit thread is filled with pet parents sharing their "my pet is a dick" stories and the responses are hilarious -and they might just make you feel better about your own little devil. For example:

"On the few days i get to sleep in, if my cat decides his breakfast is too late he has learned to wake me up for it. Early on, i apparently learned to sleep through his MRROOOOOOOWs by the bedside; as time went by, i learned to roll over & ignore him when he'd bat at me with his paws...

...so he's learned to get me up the one way i can't sleep through: he'll take a single claw & drag it very gently over my eyelid. it doesn't hurt at all, but i'm hard-pressed to think of a more peculiar feeling."

Or...

"My Siberian husky has this stuffed animal that he looooves. He's real protective of it. One morning I'm laying down and he comes up to me with his toy, he drops it on my chest... Realizes I have it then proceeds to bite me for being in possession of his precious toy...that he gave me."

If you think you have stories that would put these to shame though, go ahead and share them in the comments.

The article is on Reddit, so be prepared for plenty of language that's NSFW.

92-Year Old Woman Rams Mugger with Her Mobility Scooter

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 04:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Flammingo)

Margaret Seabrook is 75. Eileen Mason is 92. They live in Swindon, Wiltshire, UK. Both of them use mobility scooters. The two ladies were returning home from a lunch club meeting when a mugger tried to grab Seabrook’s possessions in the basket of her scooter.

Ms. Mason said, “Oh, no you don’t,” throttled her mobility scooter, and rammed the mugger as hard as she could. The Daily Telegraph reports what happened next:

The would-be thief was knocked to the ground before the great-grandmothers, both of Swindon, Wiltshire, sped off. […]

"Something in me just told me to turn so I squeezed the accelerator and turned and he went flying. He was so evil looking. We go to the lunch club every week on our scooters and nothing like this has ever happened before.

"We went through the war and all the bombings. We won't let a weasel like that hold us back. I would stand up for myself again if I needed to, but hopefully I won't need to. We will carry on as normal though - he hasn't put us off."

American Facial Hair Throughout History

All these guys rock the beards and ‘staches well, as we see facial hair styles changing over the past 200 or so years. What impressed me was how one famous personality (at a time) can set the style. Whether the men who adopted a style from a particular politician, movie star, or war hero were emulating their idols or just thought the look was cool is whole other question. -via Viral Viral Videos

Sighing

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 02:00 PM PDT

There are times when it is inappropriate to sigh when you confront your future, but eventually there comes a time... Occasionally I think about how Lunarbaboon comics could be a great jumping-off point for philosophical discussions, but then it becomes clear that there isn’t a whole lot to add to his simple yet incisive vignettes. Especially when they include the supernatural. Or Star Wars.

This Vibrating Bed Is Designed to Remove Kidney Stones

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 10:00 AM PDT

(Photo: QQ)

The wife of Zhu Qinghua, a rice farmer in Jiangxi, China, has kidney stones. She has already lost one kidney, so it is imperative to keep the other one healthy.

Her doctor said that she should stand on her head periodically in order to dislodge the stones. To make that easier, Zhu designed and built this bed, which holds a patient at different angles. It has a driving wheel from a tractor which vibrates the bed as his wife lies in it. This is supposed to shake the kidney stones loose.

Zhu has patented his invention and hopes to soon begin mass producing it.

What Happens If a Cemetery Goes Under?

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 09:00 AM PDT

Cemeteries are supposed to be peaceful and even sacred places, but there are made out of real estate and business. The business generates income by selling burial plots -which is not the same as selling real estate in most places. Eventually, all the plots will be sold. Cultures have developed different ways of dealing with this problem, from emptying graves to stacking more coffins on top. But what if the business of the cemetery goes bankrupt?

If the process of a foreclosure or a bankruptcy starts, the rest of the operations at the cemetery screech to a halt. So the maintenance of the grounds, the burial of individuals who prepaid for their plots, and other day-to-day goings on stop while the courts and banks work out what will happen next to the business and land.

Families and friends of those who prepaid for their burial end up faced with a difficult decision. They can wait for the bankruptcy or foreclosure issue to be resolved, find and purchase a new burial plot elsewhere, or, if the courts allow it, hire someone with the machinery to dig the grave in the plot they already paid for. Care of loved ones’ graves also falls to them during that time.

From here, what happens next varies widely on a case by case basis.

Laws and customs for dealing with bankrupt or abandoned cemeteries vary from country to country, and from state to state. The procedure for those already buried there can be quite complicated, depending on many factors. Today I Found Out goes over the problems of sustaining cemeteries through unexpected circumstances.

Cockiness of Runner Loses Him the Race in Final Seconds

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 08:00 AM PDT

A runner competing in the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Oregon learned that a cocksure attitude displayed too soon may be a recipe for loss. Oregon runner Tanguy Pepiot thought he had the race in the bag and slowed, raising his arm in a gesture to elicit cheers from the crowd. During his display, Washington runner Meron Simon passed him and finished first.

A chagrined Pepiot told Oregon paper The Register Guard,

"I think it was the first time it happened to me. I’ll make sure it’s the last time."

A Real Brain Bender

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 07:08 AM PDT

Can you sift data from a small clue your opponent let slip? Singapore TV host Kenneth Kong posted a puzzle at Facebook. Apparently, he and his wife have been arguing over it. Now, countless workplaces are losing man-hours while people try to figure it out on their own, or are else trying to explain it to each other. Kong says it’s a Sec 3 question, passed to him by a P5 student. Can someone familiar with the Singapore education system explain what that means?

I don’t think there’s any math involved, technically, but there are numbers, so if you give up and just want to know, the answer is here. The explanation is pretty easy to understand, and it makes me glad I didn’t tackle it. After all this, I doubt Cheryl will be receiving any birthday gifts. -via Uproxx

First Ever Sketch of Wonder Woman Goes on Sale

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 06:00 AM PDT

H.G. Peter's first sketch of Wonder Woman, recently recovered from his estate, is now up for sale. Peter was the original artist for the character when she got her start in William Moulton Marston's December 1941 All Star Comics #8. What makes the artwork more interesting (and likely more valuable) are the notes between Peter and Marston underneath it.

Read the text of their notes, more details about the item and see another photo at the sale listing at ComicLink.

5 Unlikely Hit Songs

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website or at Facebook.

Here are five odd and unexpected top ten hit songs, in no particular order of oddness.

1. “The Woody Woodpecker Song"

(YouTube link)

In 1948, the Kay Kyser Band recorded the only #1 hit song about a cartoon character. The song is about a fair, semi-mediocre, only occasionally funny cartoon wacky bird. Basically, Woody was a poor man's Bugs Bunny.

Sung by Gloria Wood and interrupted by Woody's famous laugh done by Harry Babbitt, the song was a smash hit, selling 250,000 copies. It also has a place in recording history as the only song from an animated short subject to be nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Song".

(Bonus trivia: the original voice of Woody W. was the great Mel Blanc.)

3. “Rock-a-bye Your Baby (with a Dixie Melody)"

(YouTube link)

Jerry Lewis was and is a brilliant, talented, versatile comedic genius. But did you know Jer had a top ten hit record? In 1956, just a few days after his split with partner Dean Martin, Jerry took over for an incapacitated Judy Garland at a gig in Las Vegas, singing many of Judy's most popular songs. This included Judy's “Rock-a-bye Your Baby (with a Dixie Melody).”

The song went over so well, Jerry incorporated it into his own act and recorded the song as a single. The song went certified gold and actually hit #10 on the charts. (One wonders how his ex-partner Dean Martin felt when he saw Jerry had a gold record. (????)

3. “The Ballad of the Green Berets"

(YouTube link)

A super-patriotic song co-written by Robin Moore and Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler, while the latter was recuperating from a leg wound suffered in the Vietnam War. A song about an elite Special Force in the U.S. army, the Green Berets. It is one of the very rare songs of the 1960's to cast the military in a positive light.

Yet, it became a #1 hit for five weeks in 1966. It was also a crossover smash #1 hit on Billboard's Easy Listening chart and a #1 on Billboard's Country survey. “The Ballad of the Green Berets" also became the #21 song of the 1960's. Despite the unpopularity of the Vietnam War, it sold over 9 million singles and albums.

4. “Earache My Eye"

(YouTube link)

A comedy song (skit) by the popular comedy team of Cheech and Chong. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong had had numerous hit albums and had charted a few in the top 100, but their <>Wedding Album contained a funny song/skit featuring Cheech as “Alice Bowie” (a combination of Alice Cooper and David Bowie) and Chong played his harping father. It is very unusual for this type of routine to hit the top ten, but “Earache My Eye" did, climbing all the way to #9 in 1974.

The B-side of the record is called “Turn That Thing Down.” It features the conclusion of the song partially played on side A, plus Cheech speaking about his wealth. The two sides played consecutively connect into one full song (a very catchy tune).

Several radio stations refused to play “Earache My Eye.”

5. “Woman"

(YouTube link)

“Woman" was a song by the british duo Peter and Gordon. Beatle Paul McCartney had already written three hit records for the duo, but he wanted to see if he could write a hit record under an assumed name. Basically, he was answering the question: “Did his songs sell just because they were issued as "written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney?" And thus, writer “Bernard Webb" (Paul's chosen alias) was born.

Released as a single "written by Bernard Webb" (though some capitol pressings use the name “A. Smith" instead), “Woman" was, indeed, a hit. Although not quite as popular as a Beatles record, the song did chart at #14 in the U.S. and #28 in the U.K.

(YouTube link)

Interestingly, in 1981, shortly after his assassination, a John Lennon song, also called “Woman.” was released. This song actually hit #1 on the U.K. charts and just missed topping the U.S. charts, peaking at #2. The double release of ‘”Woman" is the only time in history a John Lennon song and a Paul McCartney song were released separately but with the exact same title.
