The Goofiest Shoes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Posted: 18 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

I’ve mentioned before my earnest wish to visit New York City if for no other reason than to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which must be the greatest art museum in North America. Messy Nessy Chic has given me yet another reason to go: the Met has a collection of the weirdest shoes in the world, including this grassy sandal made by Beth Levine in the early 1990s. It's called “Barefoot in the Grass.” You can see a selection of other eccentric shoe designs owned by the Met at Messy Nessy Chic.

14th Century Yoda

Posted: 18 Apr 2015 02:00 AM PDT

We’ve seen some pretty unusual things that pop up in medieval religious manuscripts. Now it appears that one features a certain Jedi master from long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Julian Harrison of Medieval Manuscripts told NPR:

"The Yoda image comes from a 14th-century manuscript known as the Smithfield Decretals," Harrison said, after we reached out to the British Library.

"I'd love to say that it really was Yoda, or was drawn by a medieval time traveler," Harrison continued. "It's actually an illustration to the biblical story of Samson — the artist clearly had a vivid imagination!"

The monks who spent their lives hand-copying books can be forgiven for letting their creative juices flow, but none of them would have ever guessed that their art would be so entertaining to us in the 21st century. Read more about the 14th-century Yoda at NPR. -via Daily of the Day

The Horror of Washing Dishes

Posted: 18 Apr 2015 12:00 AM PDT

(Books of Adam/Adam Ellis)

You've had a long day. But the house is a mess, so it's time to get to work. Eventually, you promise yourself, the work will be done. There will be a last dish. Then you can pop a beer and watch Daredevil.

But there's always one more dish. Oh, you think that you've found the last one? You're wrong.

A Contender for the Most Demanding First Birthday Invitation Ever

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Redditor razz32 obviously saw the entertainment value in this email invitation he received to the celebration (?) of a one-year-old child's birthday, as he posted it to Reddit. The email leaves no question as to pretty much any move that anyone planning to attend could make. If someone showing up at this party has an itch, it's a good bet that a protocol has been devised by these parents as to how it should be scratched.

As you can see, the image above is only a portion of the requests included in this gracious invite. See the missive in its entirety here. -Via Mashable

Man Pulls Driver to Safety from the Edge of a Cliff

According to witnesses in Lewiston, Idaho, Matthew Sitko began driving erratically, then lost control of his SUV. He ran off the road and barely stopped before slipping over the edge of a cliff. He might have fallen down, were it not for a mysterious man who pulled him out of the window to safety. After securing Sitko from the truck, he disappeared. Local residents later identified him from the photo. The hero told police that he was trying to avoid attention.

The Day Charmander Took Over

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT

If you went to reddit at all on Wednesday, you couldn’t swing a cat without hitting a post about Charmander. Now, Charmander is the name of a Pokemon, but this is a little different from what you’re used to. A guy got a tattoo of a Pokemon he called Charmander, but it was actually a poor imitation of the work of Vaughn Pinpin (Hat Boy), who did a series of Pokemon in the style of Tim Burton. See his Charmander, which was obviously the inspiration for the tattoo.

Redditors laughed at the tat, and then started using the design for their own ends. Before the day was over, there were t-shirts, cups, animations, a packet of coffee, jewelry, and toys made in the design of what became known as “shitty Charmander.” See a roundup of them at Dorkly. I had considered doing a roundup myself, but other duties got in the way. See even more of them at Kotaku.

YouTube member carsandwater continues to drop his Red Hot Ball of Nickel on random things to see what happens, this time on a large jawbreaker. He's found a volatile combination here. A Gallery of Passports from around the World

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 05:00 PM PDT

The investment company Arton Capital created a world passport index. It shows the covers of what appears to be every legally recognized passport in the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. You can sort them by location, alphabetical order, or color.

The site also includes a ranking of passports by “power.” This means the number of countries that a passport permits a bearer to travel to without special authorization. The United States and United Kingdom rest at the top with 147. The bottom tier is a tie between South Sudan, the Solomon Islands, the Palestinian territories, Sao Tome and Principe, and Myanmar at 28.

Hayao Stars - Dreams Of An Animated Evening

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Hayao Stars by Wirdou

Miyazaki went through an impressionistic period that didn't appeal to fans of his animated features yet drove art critics around the world crazy with glee. Hayao has always enjoyed painting, and he holds the natural world in great esteem, but people know him best for his amazingly detailed character designs and incredibly magical storylines, so he decided to drop the painterly approach to animation for the sake of Studio Ghibli. And it's a good thing he did, too, because where would his fans be without their favorite wild princess, grinning Totoro neighbors and magical moving castles that spirit our imaginations away?

Add some animated artistry to your geeky wardrobe with this Hayao Stars t-shirt by Wirdou, it'll change the way you look at the stars in the night sky!

Three Friends Challenge Each Other to Find Their Dopplegängers

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Harry, Niamh and Terence are three friends who have issued each other an interesting challenge: they have to find their dopplegängers, and everyone in the world is a possible candidate. Their exercise, which they're calling "Twin Strangers," is underway, and Niamh has already got a serious contender.

YouTube Link

Recently 26-year-old Niamh met look-alike 29-year-old Karen, video footage of which is shown above (a video description of their project is shown below). As ladies are wont to do, they experimented with hair and makeup to make themselves look even more alike. The result is pretty dead on target. The two women met by way of publicity on social media. If their looks aren't enough of a similarity, it turns out that they live just an hour apart from each other in Ireland.

It looks as if Harry and Terence have their work cut out for them. The three started the project on March 30 and gave themselves a deadline of one month. So the heat is on, as they say. Check out their YouTube channel for continued updates on Twin Strangers. -Via Laughing Squid

An Oral History of Airplane!

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Has it really been 35 years since the movie Airplane! came out? Yes it has, and that means an entire generation of viewers needs to learn the history behind the groundbreaking film. It was full of actors who didn’t normally do comedy. It was a parody of several serious movies. And it made Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker names to remember in Hollywood. The A.V. Club talked to 14 different people involved in the making of Airplane! to compile the story of the film. They talk about the script, the casting (both Bruce Jenner and David Letterman auditioned), the shoot, the final product, and plenty of great stories about the stars.

Leisure: Leslie Nielsen’s whole persona up to that moment—Airplane! absolutely changed his career—was that he was the big, handsome, staid leading man. But he was the goofiest motherfucker you’ve ever met in your life.

D. Zucker: In person, Leslie was a silly practical joker, as probably everyone knows by now. He had that little fart machine of his, so that every time he was interviewed on a show or something—and in real life—he would be talking with a straight face, and then he would appear to be farting. That’s just what he liked to do.

Leisure: He was a virtuoso fart musician. He had a little fart machine that he would keep in his hand, and he would, like, sit down next to you. [Adopts deep voice.] “Hi, I’m Leslie Nielsen. You’ve probably seen me in the movies and things.” [Belches.] “Sorry, I had some onions at lunch.” And then he would have this thing tucked under his arm, and you’d hear this loud, boisterous fart come out, and you’d go, “Oh, my God!” And then you’d realize he was pulling a gag on you, and he’d go sit down next to some girl, some extra, and he’d do the same thing. You’d see her face just blanch, waiting for the invisible thing to hit her nostrils.

Bryant: The first day I walked on the set, Leslie introduced himself, and then I heard these horrible noises. [Laughs.] This rubber and metal thing fit in the palm in his hand, and it would make farting noises. People would walk by, and they’d think, “Oh, that poor man!”

Other stories include how they wrote the “jive talk,” why Kareen Abdul-Jabbar was paid that much, how the kid who visited the cockpit didn’t understand the jokes until he saw the final cut, and the story of those people who lined up to slap some sense into a panicking passenger. It’s all at the A.V. Club, and don’t call me Shirley. -via Metafilter

Silverback Gorilla Smashes Glass at Omaha Zoo

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 01:00 PM PDT

YouTube Link

Frightened onlookers at the Omaha Zoo scattered yesterday as one of the gorillas suddenly rushed the glass of the enclosed exhibit and smashed it. A Redditor captured this footage of the Silverback in question, who had been fighting with another male just prior to the incident. Photos of the bleeding, angry animal later surfaced after the fact.

Having witnessed a similar incident at my local zoo in which a male gorilla suddenly raced up to the glass of his enclosure and punched it hard enough to shake the structure after a man pressed up against it from the other side, I can say how terrifying such a happening is. The glass didn't break in that case, though. Such accounts give me uneasy feelings about keeping these intelligent, powerful animals caged, frustrated and bored. -Via Reddit

Man Shoots Armadillo; Hits Mother-In-Law Next Door

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

A bizarre shooting incident Sunday night in Lee County, Georgia, was determined to be an accident. Larry McElroy fired a 9mm pistol at an armadillo in his yard. He could not foresee what happened next.

The bullet killed the animal, but also ricocheted off of it, hit a fence, went through the back door of his mother-in-law's mobile home, through a recliner she was sitting in, and into her back.

According to a report, McElroy was about 100 yards away from the home at the time.

The mother-in-law, 74-year-old Carol Johnson, was taken to a hospital, but her injureies were considered minor. Authorities in Lee County suggest that a shotgun be used instead of a pistol to “shoot at varmints and whatnot.” Tip: “whatnot” does not include your mother-in-law.-via Arbroath

Temporarily Banned Episodes of Popular TV Shows

Posted: 17 Apr 2015 11:00 AM PDT

With over 170 episodes, it's understandable that some fans haven't seen all the episodes of Seinfeld no matter how many times they've been syndicated since their original air date. If you've never seen "The Puerto Rican Day" though, you might have missed it due to censorship. In fact, due to complaints about negative portrayals of Puerto Ricans and a burning Puerto Rican flag, the episode was banned completely between its original air date in 1999 and 2002. Even now though, some stations who syndicate the show won't touch it.

And that Seinfeld episode is only one of 27 episodes from popular TV shows that were banned temporarily for one reason or another. Perhaps the strangest of all was the Peppa Pig episode that shows kids that spiders are our friends. It was banned in Australia because the deadly spiders there are most certainly not your friend.

It appears that one such product is in the works: Back to the Future power lace shoes. Mario and Fafa of Glove and Boots think they should have gone with something a little cooler. There are so many to choose from! Of course, some will be easier to tackle than others. Automatic shoe laces are a lot easier to invent than a sonic screwdriver. -via Tastefully Offensive
