Redditors Reveal the Craziest Thing an Ex Did to Them Post Breakup

Posted: 25 Apr 2015 04:00 AM PDT

The lengths some nutty people will travel out of spite and vengeance is amazing. This AskReddit thread posed the question “What was the most f*cked up thing your ex did after you broke up?” and got some interesting answers.

Here are some psychotic highlights (rather, lowlights):

LovesEwoks: "My ex took a title loan on my vehicle. We were married, so he went to the DMV, requested a new title with his name added. Apparently, that is fully legal until divorce is finalized. That fu**er went to the title loan company and took a loan against the clear title. He never made a payment. I didn’t find out until it was getting towed away."

Jehuy: "We agreed that she’d collect her stuff from “our” place when we broke, without me being there. I arrived later that evening to find two gas valves opened, so I guess I’m lucky I didn’t light a cigarette.

Edit: No, I did not call the cops. How would I prove it anyway? At that point, I was just glad she was out of there and out of my life. And still am. So I decided to ignore it and not sound like a lunatic wailing at a police officer about a murderous girlfriend. Believe me, at this point we'd been through enough. Think I saw her once at a glance, at McDonalds; alas, not fat.
"

prattastic: "Put me on the mailing and call list for every church group she could find. For two months my phone was blowing up with calls from churches and evangelicals, they wanted money, they wanted to send me bibles and pamphlets. The ones that had my address did send me bibles and pamphlets. Took a lot of patient explaining, and occasionally some frustrated yelling to get myself removed from everything."

TrueEnt: "Not me but a neighbor. The couple got divorced and she got the house in the settlement. Only the house and the immediate house lot, not the surrounding land, that went to the husband.

The first thing he did was sell all the lumber off the rest of the land. She went from living in a nice forest to living in a clear cut. He wasn’t done yet! Once the trees were gone he sold off the topsoil, then the gravel under that. By the time he was done her house was on a hill overlooking a barren landscape reminiscent of the lunar surface. This was years ago and the place is still hideous. Here's a Google Street View of the house. https://i.imgur.com/Y6EM5ox.jpg"

Ah, those Redditors. Even if you suspeca story is a figment of someone's overactive imagination, generally it's still a good story. Read more breakup antics here.Feeling bold? Share any of your bad breakup stories in the comments.

You Can Wear This Wetsuit Surfing or in the Office

Posted: 25 Apr 2015 02:00 AM PDT

When you leave home in the morning, are you going to work or to play? You can delay that decision with the True Wetsuit by Quicksilver. It’s a line of suits—complete with a shirt and tie—that you can surf in.

Well, technically speaking, there’s nothing to stop you from surfing in your professionally tailored business suit. But Quicksilver claims that its suits will dry out after a thorough dousing in saltwater. You won’t need to change before heading into the office and explaining why you’re three hours late.

Each suit costs about $2,500. You can see more photos at Spoon & Tamago.

Christina in Red

Posted: 25 Apr 2015 12:00 AM PDT

The picture above looks like it is part of a particularly artful fashion shoot at the beach. You might be surprised to know that this color photograph was taken in 1913 -over a hundred years ago!

Mervyn O'Gorman was 42 when he took these pictures of his daughter, Christina O'Gorman at Lulworth Cove, in the English county of Dorset. He photographed Christina wearing a red swimming costume and red cloak, a colour particularly suited to the early color Autochrome process.

Autochrome was one of the first colour photo technologies, which used glass plates coated in potato starches to filter pictures with dye.

O’Gorman wasn’t even a professional photographer. This is one of a collection of family photographs he took. You can see more the photos at Mashable, including one of Christina wearing a hoodie that looks as if it could have been taken yesterday. -via Metafilter

Chinese Government Cracking Down on Funeral Strippers

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

The Chinese Ministry of Culture announced Thursday that the government and police will join forces to stop the popular practice of hiring strippers for funerals to entice more mourners to attend. After pictures circulated online of a funeral in the city of Handan in which a dancer took off her bra with children in the audience, the Ministry of Culture denounced the behavior as obscene and warned that a crackdown would follow. To flex their muscle on the issue, they revealed that after the Handan funeral, the people responsible for hiring the dancers were fined 70,000 yuan (approximately $11,300 USD).

The Chinese believe that one measure of the deceased is the number of people who show up at their funeral. As a result, large, flashy funeral processions that look more like parades with music, bands and dancers (as in the screen shot above) are common. Hiring exotic dancers and strippers for funerals is also popular in Taiwan, which is where the video footage below was shot by National Geographic.

The Average Day over Time

Cartoonist John Atkinson has a theme: he creates charts showing how things change over time, such as the typical song, the typical movie, and the typical TV show. His most recent cartoon shows the average day of a person from babyhood to the final years. His model of adulthood seems just about right.

Samurai Wars by Kinda Creative

Everyone is waiting for the triumphant return of their favorite sci-fi franchise on the big screen, but fans might be disappointed if they see samurai swords instead of light sabers. We all know George based a lot of his far out star lore on elements found in Feudal era Japan, so maybe he should explore a different kind of war when he's done making all those sequels. Maybe we need a story about a war that took place a long, long time ago...

Bring some Feudal era fun to your geeky wardrobe with this Samurai Wars t-shirt by Kinda Creative, it's the fun way to show love for samurai flicks and the return of your favorite sci-fi franchise!

Texas crafter Kim Mills of the HappyMillsShop has crafted the Burger Babe Bow, a plush hair bow that looks a cheeseburger. Tasty!

It features:

...felt tomatoes with painted seed details, gathered satin ribbon lettuce, fleece cheese slices and felt meat patties sandwiched between two fluffy fleece buns with hand beaded "sesame seeds."

It's available for $22 on Etsy and a smaller version (the "Baby Burger Bow") is offered for $18.

Too Many Kings—A Game of Thrones Parody of Too Many Cooks

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Too Many Cooks is a brilliantly innovative short film by Casper Kelly of Adult Swim. It starts out as a perfect parody of 80s sitcom introductions. Then it gets weird. Then it gets dark. It’s perfect and you should watch it.

And you should watch Alex Jones’s Game of Thrones version that matches the original Too Many Cooks soundtrack with scenes from that show. As you might expect, the lyrics match the gory drama:

A family is like a soup
Everyone adds an extra scoop
Mix an ounce of smile so sweet
A dash of cool to add the heat, and you’ve got
Too many Cooks

Woman Builds Tiny 186-Square-Foot House to Avoid High Cost of Housing

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Isabella Mori, 50, is a resident of Vancouver, Canada, and she found the price of housing in her home town overwhelming. Unsurprising, since Vancouver has the second most unaffordable housing in the world. Her solution? Build her own home at a cost of only CAD $39,000 (USD $30,995).

The attractive, light-filled dwelling, which Mori calls "Thousand Crow," is equipped with well-planned features such as a fan to vent the cat litter box and a number of built-in, space-saving storage solutions.

When Peanuts Travels to Westeros, We All Win

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 05:00 PM PDT

Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Woodstock and the rest of the Peanuts gang might be have some humorous adventures in their ordinary suburban life, but in Westeros, no one is safe from death. Artist Philip Horoton has made a few great cartoons showing what happens when the Peanuts travel to the world of George R.R. Martin.

While Philip has quite a few great comic mashups, these are so far the only two combining Peanuts and Game of Thrones, but I really hope he makes more because these are so promising already.

What Aussies Know About America

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Buzzfeed had Australians fill out a little quiz about America. We can’t expect people from other countries to know all the stuff about the U.S.A. that we know, but the Aussies did their best. When they couldn’t think of an answer, they always had something entertaining ready. In naming presidents, quite a few took a shortcut and said George Bush x2, which got them most of the way to three. Other answers were Jed Bartlett, Bill Pullman, and Donald Trump. The overwhelming opinion is that fast food is our biggest export, and the First Amendment must have something to do with guns. See them all here.

What if Man of Steel was IN COLOR?

The 2013 Superman movie Man of Steel was in color, alright, but it was muted and dark, trying to emulate the look of The Dark Knight. But what works for Batman doesn’t necessarily work for Superman. VideoLab adjusted the colors to look more like the real world, which makes a real difference, don’t you think? At least its much easier for someone with less-than-optimal eyesight to follow. -via b3ta

Big news! Bigfoot has been found...inside a bundt cake! Jenn Fujikawa over at Nerdist used a Bigfoot cookie cutter to make him appear inside this tasty treat.

Sasquatch. Yeti. Bigfoot. He goes by so many names, yet he’s still an enigma. He could be behind that tree in the woods, or perhaps in the icy mountain of a theme park ride, but most likely you’ll find him… in a bundt cake.

Gorgeous Glass by Niyoko Ikuta

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

These beautiful glassworks by Japanese artist Niyoko Ikuta play with the qualities of glass creatively mixed with geometric forms. Ikuta is recognized worldwide as a master of glass art and has collectors across the globe. Ikuta expounded on her work to the Victoria & Albert museum in London:

"I am captivated by the complexity of light as it reflects, refracts, and passes through broken cross sections of plate glass. In 1980 I began making artwork by laminating sheets of glass using adhesive and exposing the cross sections. My motifs are derived from feelings of gentleness and harshness, fear, limitless expansion experienced through contact with nature, images from music, ethnic conflict, the heart affected by joy and anger, and prayer. In creating my pieces it is like imagining an architectural space when viewing blueprints, deciding on an image by reading into the intentions of the architect, or imbuing a space with dynamic energy to bring it to life."

Hilarious Outtakes from Some of the Best Sci Fi Shows

Sci fi shows occassionally have levity, but they need to have believable drama or else they don't work. While that makes for great film and television, it doesn't give fans the best insight on how their favorite actors are on set. This awesome collection of sci fi bloopers featured on io9 shows what happens between the successful takes and reminds us that no matter how serious Worf, Scully, Starbuck and Agent Dunham appear on screen, the actors portraying them are still real, silly people.

Those who like to cook know that high heat can make for wonderful delights, such as all things carmelized. When some foods are placed on the grill, sugary magic happens particularly with fruits. One of my favorite sweet summer dishes is grilled peaches with cinnamon sugar and a little butter. I'm also a big fan of grilled pineapple. If you like grilled shish kebabs with pineapple, you know that the fruit has a more complex and delicious flavor when grilled.

Proposal: Give College Students the Power to Fire Professors

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 09:30 AM PDT

(Photo: Kevin Dooley)

During the Fifth Century B.C., Athenians engaged in the usual practice of ostracism. Once a year, they took a popular vote. The person with the most votes was banished from the city. Ideally, this would remove the most hated person in the city.

2,500 years later, State Senator Mark Chelgren of Iowa has a proposal that’s strikingly similar. He thinks that some professors at state universities are incompetent. But because of tenure regulations, they get to keep their jobs for life. Chelgren has introduced a bill into the state legislature that would reduce these bad teachers by empowering students to fire a single professor every year.

The process begins with the end-of-semester student evaluations. The Chronicle of Higher Education explains:

The names of the five professors with the lowest ratings above the minimum threshold would be published online. Students would then vote on those professors’ future employment — and the professor with the fewest votes would be fired, regardless of tenure status or contract terms.

POLL: Should college students have the power to fire professors in this manner?

 • Yes, it will help clear out the deadweight.
 • No, the students can’t evaluate a professor’s work effectively.
 • Just show me the poll results.

90-year-old Pilot Still Going Strong

Paddy Elliot of Birmingham, UK, recently celebrated his 90th birthday, and also his medical certification to continue flying his plane! He’s been a pilot for decades, although he only took up flying when he retired at 64.

After 50 years he retired from Rover cars and finally got the chance to live the dream, gaining a private pilot’s licence in 1988.

“I spend every second I can spare up in the skies. It’s a truly unique feeling to be up there looking down on the world.

“It’s given me perspective but more importantly it’s kept me young. I may be 90 but it certainly doesn’t feel like that.”

Elliot flies at least three times a week, and flew to France for lunch last week. To keep his license, he must pass a medical certification every two years, and recently got the all-clear to keep flying for another two years. Read more about the amazing flying nonagenarian and see a video of Elliot in action. It just goes to show that you’re never too old to take up something new.

Fifteen Facts About A Clockwork Orange

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Remember the disabled writer, F. Alexander, who lives at HOME in A Clockwork Orange? In a later scene with him, his musclebound assistant Julian is played by Darth Vader himself David Prowse, who was at the height of his bodybuilding involvement. Not only did Prowse have a role in the film, but he had the guts to stand up to Stanley Kubrick, which few actors ever did with the demanding and headstrong director.

Prowse took issue with the scene in which he had to carry the writer and his wheelchair around a corner and to the dinner table in one take. Kubrick, famous for being insistent on doing many takes of each scene in his films, had Prowse worried about the number of times he'd be expected to perform that feat of strength. Prowse approached Kubrick, arguing, "Your name is not 'one-take Kubrick' is it, you see?" Everyone on the set grew silent, thinking that was the premature end of Prowse's work on the film. Kubrick just laughed and told him not to worry. They got the shot in six takes, definitely a conservative effort on Kubrick's part.

Presidents Removed From Their Coins

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 07:30 AM PDT

Cutout coin silhouettes

This is fun. The tiny heads of American presidents have been cut out of their coins (oops, Jefferson lost his phony tail in the process!). The cut coins are the handiwork of a friend of Imgur user pfefferminzetea who says "some kind of precision saw blade" was used to do the dirty work. Though, there's quite a debate on how precisely the presidents' heads were removed going on over at reddit

Before you ask, I checked, cutting coins is not illegal, unless you do it with the intent to defraud.

But, I have a question, am I the only one who remembers when they used to have a cast member in Disney World's Liberty Square making cutout coin jewelry?

Just Say "No" To These Terrible Wedding Proposals

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 06:30 AM PDT

There are a million reasons why putting a ring in your prospective fiance's food is a terrible idea, but when you can't even be bothered to sneak the thing into something a little more classy than a budget chicken sandwich from your local fast food restaurant, you have to ask yourself: do you really even care if she says yes?

And of course, spelling things out in flower petals is entirely romantic, but maybe you should consult a dictionary before you ask her to "merry" you.

We at Neatorama are suckers for a good love story, but most of these proposals at Awkward Family Photos are anything but -although I wouldn't mind a Star Wars or Pokemon proposal.
