Veronica and Sage had a long wedding. Specifically, it was about 26.2 miles long. They took their vows immediately before the Whistle Stop Marathon in Ashland, Wisconsin. Then they ran the full race, with Veronica in her veil and gown and Sage in his formal vest.

When they reached the end, Sage performed the tradition of carrying the bride over the threshold by toting Veronica across the finish line. You can see more photos at Offbeat Bride.

The Art Of The Incredibly Awkward Kiss

Posted: 30 Apr 2015 03:00 AM PDT

Public displays of affection make some people feel mighty uncomfortable, especially if they haven’t kissed anybody in a really long time, but even the most warmhearted fan of PDA would be repulsed by someone who kisses like this:

(Image Link)

When a camera captures that painfully awkward moment when one person goes in for a kiss while the other looks like they’re about to throw up things get awkward, and viewers let loose a collective cringe

(Image Link)

Kissing is an artform, one which should be studied behind closed doors and prevented from seeing the light of day until it has been perfected, so you don't turn people off to the idea of love!

Pirate Treasure Found in Grandpa’s Attic

Posted: 30 Apr 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Maria Lopez of Tampa found a box in her grandfather’s attic a few weeks ago. Tnhat’s not at all unusual, but the contents of the box were certainly unusual. It contained old coins, a family picture, a map, and a severed hand wearing a ring. Could it be pirate treasure? Mike Lopez joked that his great-grandparents might have been pirates.

When Maria and Mike were children, their grandfather would tell them stories about his father, Ernesto Lopez, finding Jose Gaspar's pirate treasure. They took the box to a few antique stores around Tampa and the contents were described as "gruesome and authentic."

The map is estimated to be from the 1930s. It shows the Tampa area. Lafayette Street is labeled on the map. That road's name was changed to Kennedy Boulevard later.

The coins are believed to be Spanish and Portuguese from the 18th century. The ring on the hand's ring finger is expected to be from around the same time period.

The Lopez family says the hand may belong to Jose Gaspar, the legendary Florida-based pirate who called himself “Gasparilla.” See more pictures of the treasure at WTSP. -via Time

Like a little scientist, this beautiful gray Scottish Fold kitty sizes up, tilts and circles a tiny fishbowl, as if he's figuring out exactly how to make his body fit. Just when it looks like he won't be able to do it, the cat pours himself into the bowl as if he's a pitcher of water. -Via Tastefully Offensive

Turning Real Women Into Disney Princesses

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Animators and character designers need to take certain liberties with the human forms they draw for animated features, stylizing and modifying the figure to give the characters more visual interest.

That’s why real life humans shouldn’t be held to the beauty standards of your average animated humanoid, and why most cartoon characters would look absolutely horrifying as flesh and blood folks.

The lovely ladies at BuzzFeed decided to undergo a lil' Photoshopping to show the world what they would look like as real life Disney princesses, and the results are eye opening...literally!

This Is What Real Girls Would Look Like As Disney Princesses

Photographer's Series "Beauties" Documents Plastic Surgery Obsessed Youths of Columbia

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Manuela Henao is a London-based photographer whose latest project entitled "Beauties" documents the dismaying state of feminine beauty standards in Medellin, Colombia. It is typical for very young women to begin saving up for the multiple plastic surgeries they plan to have, starting in their teens and twenties. Risky procedures such as liposuction and injections are de rigueur for the young females of this culture, which seems to have far surpassed America's sometimes oppressive beauty standards.

Henao's subjects include Estefania, 18, who opted for liposuction at 15 and breast implants at 18, and Alejandra Remirez, 23, who models and sells weight loss pills. Remirez began saving for breast implants, nose surgery and liposuction when she was 18.

You Cannot Ride This 'Backwards Brains Bicycle'

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Destin riding a bike

Or at least that what Destin of Smarter Every Day believes after he frustratingly tried to get it going himself.

See, the “backwards brain bicycle” was mechanically tweaked to turn left when you turn right, and vice versa. He thought it would be easy to ride, since he had the knowledge of how it worked. What he didn't have was the understanding of how to ride it, causing him some deep frustration.

Can he wrap his head around how to ride it properly?

Valid Victorian

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 07:00 PM PDT

This graduation cake might make a little sense only if the recipient were receiving a PhD in 19th-century English History. But if he or she was first in the class, the spelling is valedictorian. That took me a second to see, long enough to make me laugh at the cake from the archives at Cake Wrecks. It’s part of a round up of 21 Graduation Cakes That Do Not Get A Passing Grade at Buzzfeed. Let’s hope the class of 2015 brings us more cakes to laugh at, as long as it’s someone else paying for them.

Documentary Featuring Automotive Design Drawings From Detroit's Golden Era

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Even though automotive technology has come a long way from the days of gas guzzling boats and three on the tree shifters, the art of designing a car remains pretty much the same.

Car designs all begin with a series of illustrations created by a concept artist, who applies their knowledge of form, contour shapes, and the automotive brand’s signature style to make the public's automotive dreams come true.

An upcoming documentary entitled "American Dreaming: Detroit's Golden Age Of Automotive Design" is chock full of interviews and artwork from the Motor City's most talented car designers, revealing many old school car designs we were never meant to see.

This Coffee Table Is a Working R2-D2 Pinball Machine

Excuse me, sir, but this coffee table is in prime condition. Inside its molded body that looks like the colors and lines of the original R2-D2 are the guts of a Star Wars pinball machine from 1991. It has external lights and sound effects from our favorite droid, as well as a light that resembles Artoo's holographic projector.

It's made by ALTAR Furniture, a company that gives new life to old pinball machines by placing them inside stylish coffee tables. It's on sale for about $13,000.

Keeping Up With The Cowdashians

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 02:00 PM PDT

It’s the reality webseries you’ve been waiting for! Keeping Up With The Cowdashians follows the adventures of five big-bottomed bovine beauties as they go about their days on a farm in Northunberland, UK. Producer Sam Wass of the Great British Meat Company says it’s a way to promote locally-sourced meat and poke fun at reality TV.

In the first show “Ooo-arr the Cowdashians” we are introduced to the five sisters at their home in Hadrian’s hills – Wallsteads Farm – and the farmer charged with keeping them in check, Alastair Patterson.

“I don’t know what kind of drama people are looking for with reality TV, but if they want to watch videos of cows eating grass, wandering around and dropping cow pats then they’re in for a treat,” Alastair said.

Russia’s Emergency Steam Locomotive Reserve

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 01:00 PM PDT

(Unrelated photo: Евгений Сухарников)

To have in supply in case of a disaster, the US has a strategic reserve of petroleum. China has a similar repository of pork. Canada, of course, has a backup inventory of maple syrup.

To prepare for the worst, Russia has a reserve fleet of old fashioned steam-powered locomotives. This was originally a Soviet operation. In the event of a nuclear war, the USSR wanted to maintain a transportation infrastructure without a regular supply of diesel fuel. These trains could operate with coal. Russians call the program the Strategic Steam Resource.

12 of these trains still exist, albeit in poor condition, near the city of Roslavl. The Russian government will probably scrap them soon.

25 Towns that Changed Names

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Why would a town change its name? There are plenty of reasons, as you’ll find out in this week’s mental_floss List Show. Maybe the incentive was money or infrastructure. Maybe the old name was offensive, or confusing, or associated with something unpleasant. The change could be to honor someone or something the town is known for. Or maybe they just wanted something a little more prestigious. Some of these 25 towns all have their own reasons, some weirder than others.

The Confounding Hotel Mini-Bar

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Although I rarely stay at a hotel that has any amenities at all, one that I dread seeing is the mini-bar -especially when the kids were young. I first encountered a mini-bar in China. Our travel agent advised us to just replace anything taken with an identical item before checking out, but that’s hard to do when hotel employees come in several times a day to check it. And don’t get me started on the refrigerators and snack trays equipped with motion sensors! But it seems the hotel mini-bar is fading away. At first, it was a great idea for business travelers with expense accounts, but even they are more cautious about spending three times the retail price for a drink in today’s economy. Read about the rise and fall of the hotel mini-bar at Pricenomics. -via Digg

Why You Little...! by TurboToaster

Link and Ganon had been battling each other for so long that they're starting to feel like they're related somehow, and daddy Ganon is sick of little Linky's bad behavior. It's easy to feel like you're in the right when so many of Hyrule's citizens swear fealty to you, and it's just as easy to condemn a street urchin like Link as being nothing but trouble. But in the end they're both sword swinging, rupee stacking cucco chuckers, in other words they're two of a kind!

A Gourmet Meal on the London Underground

When you’re in London and you want the finest food served in the classiest ambiance, where do you go? To the Tube, of course! There you can a butternut velouté with crushed cumin and a crispy arancini. But you’ll have to go to one spot in particular for food like this: the Basement Gallery.

It’s a supper club that chef Alex Cooper created in an old car first used on the London Underground in 1967. Cooper uses a kitchen in what was a Victorian-era waste pumping station to prepare the food, then waiters deliver it to the train car. Guests eat on fine silverware and pristine white tablecloths. Kittenwatch with Eve

The folks at Tiny Kittens have set up a webcam for a cat named Eve. She gave birth to a litter of five two days ago.

Abandoned and pregnant, Eve took refuge under someone's porch until a kind neighbor brought her to us. Her babies were born in safety and will be raised with love, making Eve one of the lucky ones! She and her babies will be spayed/neutered and adopted into loving homes when they are old enough.

You can watch the family streaming live here, but if they aren’t doing anything, there are also a couple of videos you can enjoy. Squee! -via Metafilter

100 Years Of Mexican Beauty In One Minute

The history of the Yucatan Peninsula is full of conquerors flooding in from overseas, martial conflict and proud people willing to die for what they believe in, even when they faced overwhelming odds.

Mexico didn’t come into its own as a country until the late 19th century, so mapping out the history of Mexican fashion means focusing mainly on 20th century styles, because that's when pure Mexican beauty began to bloom.

A Few Facts You May Not Know About the Emmy Awards

Posted: 29 Apr 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website or at Facebook.

(Image credit: Flickr user ITU Pictures)

* The first Emmy award was awarded in 1949. It went to Shirley Dinsdale, a ventriloquist. She was voted Most Outstanding Television Personality.

* The name “Emmy" is a feminization of the nickname “Immy,” an abbreviation of the image orthicon tube, which is part of a TV camera.

* In 1971, George C. Scott turned down his Oscar for the movie Patton, complaining that the Oscars were a petty popularity contest. But that same year, Scott accepted an Emmy award for his role in the Hallmark Hall of Fame special The Price.

* Kelsey Grammar is the only actor to be nominated for the same character in three different series. His Frasier Crane character was nominated for Wings (once), Cheers (twice), and Frasier (10 nominations, four wins).

* In 1987, The Facts of Life was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Hairdressing.

* Baywatch (1989-2001) is the longest-running series (12 years) to never be nominated for an Emmy. It broke the previous record of 11 years, held by Married... with Children.

* In 1958, in a bid to differentiate the characters they play on TV, the Academy created two new categories: Best Continuing Performance in a Series by a Person Who Essentially Plays Herself and it's male counterpart. The idea was to coronate Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy, but the plan backfired and Dinah Shore won instead. (In 1959, Jack Benny became the last person to win this award.)

* In 1962, Jackie Kennedy became the only First Lady to win an Emmy, for her guided tour through the White House. The vice president's wife, Lady Bird Johnson, accepted the award for the camera-shy First Lady.

* In 1960, Harry Belafonte became the first black performer to win an Emmy for Tonight with Belafonte.

* Betty Thomas is the only actress to have her award almost stolen. In 1985, an unknown man took the stage to accept Betty's award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Hill Street Blues. She accepted the award during a commercial break. The man, Barry Bremen, was arrested for grand theft.

* Jackie Gleason (incredibly) never won an Emmy award. His comedy partner on The Honeymooners, Art Carney, won 5 awards. whenever Jackie visited Art's home, Art hid the awards in his closet. Gleason's wife called not winning an Emmy Jackie's "biggest disappointment".

* The first year of the actors and actresses wearing red AIDS ribbons was 1991. The viewing audience was so confused by seeing all the red ribbons, Jamie Lee Curtis was asked to explain the ribbons' significance.

* Get Smart won for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1969, although the show had already been canceled. This was the first time the question was brought up: “Should a canceled show be eligible to win an Emmy?" (Interestingly, although Get Smart created the controversy, that same year Hope Lange won for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Carl Betz won an Emmy for Judd for the Defense and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour won an Emmy, although each show was already canceled.)

* Ed Asner is the only performer to win an Emmy for playing the same character in both a comedy series and a drama. He won Emmys for his role as Lou Grant in both The Mary Tyler Moore Show (comedy) and for Lou Grant (drama).

* When Shelley Winters won an Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in 1962, she mistakenly thanked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
