Reducing nuclear risks—if not now, when?

Urge President Obama to remove our land-based nuclear missiles from hair-trigger alert—a dangerous, unnecessary Cold War-era practice.

ACTION ALERT
President Obama: Take Our Missiles Off Hair-Trigger Alert

Dear UCS supporter,

Six years ago, President Obama gave an historic speech in Prague about the need to address the still real and urgent threat posed by nuclear weapons. Five years ago, the United States and Russia signed the New START Treaty, an important but modest agreement reducing each country's still massive nuclear arsenals. So what progress have we seen since then in reducing nuclear risks? The simple answer? Very little. Some would say none.

Write President Obama today and urge him to take our land-based nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert and make the world safer now.

Today, some 1,800 U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons are still on hair-trigger alert—ready to launch in a matter of minutes. This policy increases the risk of an accidental nuclear missile launch or a deliberate launch in response to a false warning, which would have catastrophic results.

With less than two years remaining in President Obama's presidency, now is the time for him to act. And here's how—he can issue an order to take our country's 450 land-based nuclear-armed missiles off hair-trigger alert. Doing so would essentially eliminate the risk of an accidental, mistaken, or unauthorized launch—making us all much safer. Such a step would not require the approval of Congress nor agreement with Russia. The president simply needs the will and courage to act—which is why it is so important that he hears from you.

Take Action
