| Enchanting Illustrations of Everyday Love Posted: 01 May 2015 04:00 AM PDT I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something special about the way that Korean artist Puuung draws this couple that is so heartwarming. The pair go through the everyday activities of life at home: cooking and cleaning, dozing together on the couch, and enduring the occasional sorrow of real life. I suppose that’s what’s so endearing about them. I can readily see my wife and I as the characters. You can see more drawings of them at Design Taxi. -via 123 Inspiration | ||||||||
| 2-Year-Old Learns Hamlet's Soliloquy From Shakespearean Actor Posted: 01 May 2015 03:00 AM PDT A few years back, Shakespearean (and Emmy Award-winning) actor Brian Cox spent some time teaching then 2-year-old Theo the famous soliloquy from Hamlet. To be or not to be...two: Head on over to Open Cultureto hear Cox talk with the BBC about this lesson. [link] | ||||||||
| Illuminated Zigzagging Staircase Seems to Hover in Midair Posted: 01 May 2015 02:00 AM PDT
French designer Frédéric Hamerlak developed this unique staircase that looks like it belongs in a science fiction movie. LEDs light up the plastic sheets that serve as stairs, which are connected to only the wall. They are angled horizontally in a zigzag pattern. A panel resembling a railing runs alongside them. When they light up in the darkness, the visual effect is quite stunning. You can see more photos at Home Crux. -via Fubiz

| 5-Year Old Isn’t Running away from Home—Just “Moving On” with Her Life Posted: 01 May 2015 12:00 AM PDT Saige, a 5-year old girl, doesn’t want you to think of it as a breakup as much as the next stage of the relationship. You’ve both changed, so it’s time to explore other possibilities. Her big brother Tanner doesn’t want her in the house anymore. So Saige is moving to the home of Jenn, her mom’s best friend. It’s much cleaner and has more room for her stuff. Fortunately, Saige has backed down from her threat. Now a few days after this video was recorded, she remains in her mom’s house. | ||||||||
| Now That's What I Call A Dog and Pony Show Posted: 30 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT Sometimes working online leads you to run across some strange things on the net. Today though, it led me to a bright and wonderful path where I happened to run across a literal dog and pony show. I don't know much more about the image other than the fact that it was shot at a circus somwhere by Jenn Durfey -oh, and that it is purely amazing. | ||||||||
| Imperial Scum - A Trooper's Life For Me Posted: 30 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT If you're going to live the life of an Imperial scumbag you might as well look the part. It's a good thing troopers always wear those big, white helmets so nobody can see the tears run down their cloned faces... Get geared up for intergalactic conflict with this Imperial Scum t-shirt by The Staziac, it's the stylish way to show allegiance to the greatest sci-fi franchise in the galaxy! | How Old Do You Look? Microsoft's Bot Takes a Guess Posted: 30 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT And, as you can see, it's quite accurate. Microsoft built How Old Do I Look?--a free browser application that guesses how old you are and your gender from a photo. It's having a bit of trouble with my avatar. It says that Aragorn, the King of Gondor, is 35 when he was well into his 80s during the War of the Ring. So although TechCrunch speaks highly of the program, I think that it still needs work. Try it with your own photos. Does it work for you? -via Joe Carter | ||||||||
| Posted: 30 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT Neatorama’s favorite unicycle-riding flame-throwing bagpipe-playing cosplayer, Brian Kidd, also known as the Unipiper, has teamed up with Rogue Ales to produce a beer called UnipIPA, which is an IPA beer (explained here) featuring “bagpipe-roasted habanero peppers and lots of geeky goodness,” according to Kidd.
UnipIPA beer will be unveiled May 5 with a tasting at Green Dragon Bistro and Pub in Portland. See a news video about the beer at KPTV. -Thanks, Brian!

| Las Vegas Is Not Actually Las Vegas Posted: 30 Apr 2015 05:00 PM PDT
Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas! But if you see this iconic sign as you're driving, you're not in Las Vegas. In fact, most of the famous landmarks and the big casinos aren't in Las Vegas at all. They're in Paradise, which isn't even a town. It's an unincorporated area in Clark County. A quarter of a million people live there, but it has no municipal government. How did this happen? CGP Grey explains in another of his entertaining and informative videos.
| Fun Behind-The-Scenes Seinfeld Stories Posted: 30 Apr 2015 04:00 PM PDT It's hard to believe that Jerry Seinfeld just turned 61, but iit's true. In celebration of his birthday, the Huffington Post rounded up a great collection of 11 facts about the show that made him a legend. If you're a fan of the show, you may have heard a few of these trivia tidbits (the Festivus and Junior Mint facts have been circulated for years), but chances are that at least a few will be new to you. For example, one of the most legendary episodes, where Elaine showed off her sweet dancing skills, was opposed by both Larry David and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Also, the Soup Nazi episode really peeved off the chef who inspired the character -to the point where Jerry Seinfeld had to send his girlfriend to get him soup afterwards because he would no longer serve Jerry. | ||||||||
| In Photos: How To Be A Good Storyteller Posted: 30 Apr 2015 03:00 PM PDT Ami Vitale didn’t get to be a National Geographic photographer by just being in the right place at the right time. A tourist snapping pictures might bring home a decent souvenir, but in order to tell a story in photographs, it takes a lot more.
That’s just one of the things that make a good story in photos. Rest the rest at Nat Geo’s Intelligent Traveler magazine. -via Marilyn Terrell

| Iron Meh - Sometimes Even A Suit Of Armor Can't Hide The Feels Posted: 30 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT Tony was growing tired of having to save the planet every other week, and these days donning the Iron Man suit was starting to feel rather meh. He tried to hide his feelings behind bravado and an armor plated smile, but his lack of jokes and sobriety gave away Tony's meh state of mind. His fellow Avengers tried to cheer him up, but Tony didn't even crack a smile when the Hulk split his pants or when Black Widow shot Thor with a tranquilizer, rendering him unable to lift his hammer, so they knew he was genuinely in a funk... This Iron Meh t-shirt by Dann Matthews is anything but mediocre, and it's sure to make your fellow comic book fans smile...or at least smirk! | Amazing Cosplayer Portraits By Antti Karppinen Posted: 30 Apr 2015 11:00 AM PDT Fan cons often become known for the caliber of cosplayers who attend the convention, and thereby receive more online press when talented cosplayers attend because people love a good picture. The Cardiff Film and Comic Con is the latest fan con to rise in popularity, mostly due to the fact that a strong contingent of cosplayers have been capturing the attention of cosplay enthusiasts around the world. This series of amazing portraits by Antti Karppinen serves as a showcase for the talented cosplayers who attended the Cardiff Con, showing off their incredibly detailed costumes without all the background noise. The cosplayers at Cardiff Con are fully committed to their roles, and without a sea of convention attendees in the background it's much easier to see all the little details they've put into their costumes. -Via Laughing Squid | ||||||||
| The Laundry Cycle Will Clean Up Your Exercise Routine Posted: 30 Apr 2015 10:00 AM PDT We can all use a little more exercise (well, most of us at least), but as long as we're all going to be doing laundry, why not get a good workout at the same time? With the Bike Washing Machine, you can! Aside from the obvious health benefits, the Bike Washing Machine also helps save electricity -meaning you're not only getting in shape, but also helping the earth. The downside is that the design is still in the concept stage, so you won't be able to get one any time soon, but with something this promising, we can only hope it will be available in a short amount of time. | ||||||||
| From Poppie to Newman to Bania: Jerry's Enemies on Seinfeld, Ranked Posted: 30 Apr 2015 09:00 AM PDT You knew it whenever Jerry would grimace and take on a gravelly tone as he uttered their names. They made Kramer twitch more than usual in repulsion, and George's pitch and decibel level raised with his anxiety. They were the Seinfeld "villains." Each threatened Jerry and his pals in different ways, each formidable. This article ranks their picks as to the top Seinfeld enemies. Do you agree? Speak up in the comments. But for now, be very afraid of one of my favorites: Philip Baker Hall as Lt. Joe Bookman, L.C. (Library Cop). | ||||||||
| Inside America's Massive, Messy Evacuation From Saigon Posted: 30 Apr 2015 08:30 AM PDT On April 30, 1975, the Vietnam War ended when the People’s Army of Vietnam captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam (now named Ho Chi Minh City). The Fall of Saigon forty years ago today was preceded by a frantic week of mass evacuation of Americans, Vietnamese who had worked for the government or the Americans, relatives, orphans, and refugees of all kinds.
That’s a lot of people, but those numbers were dwarfed by those who wanted to leave but couldn’t. U.S. officials argued over whether Vietnamese dependents of Americans would be included in the evacuation, because they would refuse to leave without their families. Meanwhile, millions of at-risk South Vietnamese citizens scrambled to arrange any way out they could. By waiting until the last minute, the evacuation became a move of desperation. Read an account of that final week at New Republic. -via Digg See also: Journalists from Time magazine share their memories of the Fall of Saigon (with video).
| The Golfboard is a Combination Skateboard and Golf Cart Posted: 30 Apr 2015 08:00 AM PDT
The goal of this invention is to make a round of golf faster. Instead of 5 hours on the course, according to the manufacturers, the Golfboard reduces a round to under 4 hours. It’s a 4-wheel drive vehicle that moves up to 10 MPH. It has room for a set of clubs and one rider, who steers it by leaning. The deck is similar to that of a skateboard, so riding it is akin to riding a motorized skateboard. The 11-inch wheels are designed to provide traction without tearing up greens. -via Core77

| Posted: 30 Apr 2015 07:00 AM PDT Boy bands sing about love and perfection because that’s what girls like to hear. Amy Schumer parodies that trope when the boys sing “Girl, You Don't Need Makeup,” which is all sweet and lovely until she takes her makeup off. Then they rethink their lyrics in a hurry! It’s funny, while at the same time it comments on one more way young women develop anxiety about their appearance. -via Viral Viral Videos | ||||||||
| Horse Quiltimation: A Quilt Made to Animate Posted: 30 Apr 2015 06:30 AM PDT This is really cool. Cartoonist Nina Paley (with the help of Chris Carlson, Theodore Gray, and the "Behemoth") created a quilt based on the circa 1878 "Horse in Motion" photographs by Edweard Muybridge. She's named the carefully-crafted piece, "Horse Quiltimation." When you put it all together in an animation, it looks like the horse is running. Well done! [link]

| Posted: 30 Apr 2015 05:00 AM PDT You wouldn’t know it today, but at one time, the entire concept of watching Hollywood movies in your own home was a revolutionary idea. We rented and bought movies like crazy, and watched them over and over. This craze brought with it a new art form -that of the home video cover. Now that VHS has given way to on-demand streaming, that art form is part of history. The 1980s and ‘90s were its heyday. That lost art form is curated in a new book VHS: Video Cover Art by Thomas “The Dude Designs” Hodge. It contains over 240 full-scale, complete video sleeves of all movie genres, with designs ranging from the mundane to the insane. The book explores the images, typography, and sometimes hilarious text that was designed to reach out and grab you from the shelves of the movie rental store. Continue reading for a sampling from the book. |
