| RIP Alan Sanford, The Man Who Fired the First US Shots of World War II Posted: 21 May 2015 04:00 AM PDT
Early on the morning of December 7, 1941, Seaman First Class Alan Sanford, 18, was on board the destroyer USS Ward. That ship guarded the entrance to Pearl Harbor. Lookouts spotted a strange, cylindrical object in the water. It was a Japanese mini-submarine. The captain, woken from sleep, ordered the ship to speed and prepare to ram the sub. Seaman Sanford was among a gun crew getting ready to fire at the object. Specifically, it was this gun:
On the opening day of the war, 75 minutes before Japanese warplanes swarmed over the anchored fleet at Pearl Harbor, Seaman Sanford and his colleagues opened fire at the submarine. These were the first American shots of the war. The Wall Street Journal describes the encounter:
The captain of the Ward reported the battle to his superiors via radio, but nothing came of it. Researchers found the sunken mini-sub in 2002. Seaman Sanford served through the end of the war. Then he studied mechanical engineering and later worked on the Apollo space program. He died in January at the age of 91 and was buried on Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery. -via Jonah Goldberg
| Posted: 21 May 2015 03:00 AM PDT Forty-nine students in an animation class at the University of Newcastle drew Taylor Swift’s video for the song “Shake It Off.” They each were assigned to rotoscope 52 frames and give it their own style. What they ended up with is alternatively beautiful, surreal, and hilarious. You’ll be surprised by the creative flourishes that pop up when you least expect them. -via Time | ||||||||
| The Hair Colors of National Leaders Posted: 21 May 2015 02:00 AM PDT Nevermind population or GDP. Those metrics aren't important. This map by Jody Sieradzki of Dadaviz Research shows what matters in political geography: the hair colors of the heads of government around the world. Blondes thrive in northern Europe and baldness prospers in Africa. There's a sweep of grey hair around the middle of the world. Sadly, no leader has hair dyed in a non-natural color. It would be nice to add some pastels to the map. -via Hopes & Fears | ||||||||
| 8-Year-Old Boy Recreates 'The Monkees' Opening Sequence With His Toys Posted: 21 May 2015 01:00 AM PDT Who doesn't know and love the late 1960s show, The Monkees, or at the very least have their theme song stuck in their head now ("Hey, hey, we're the Monkees!")? 8-year-old Dylan Reitz wasn't monkeying around when he created The Monkees TV show opening sequence with his toys. He really went the extra mile to make it, pulling out his LEGO bricks, stuffed animals, and fingerboards. He even built a red Monkeemobile! He writes:
Here's his amazing video, with a side-by-side comparison of the original: via real Monkee Micky Dolenz
| Oreo-Stuffed Donut Holes with Oreo Frosting Posted: 21 May 2015 12:00 AM PDT How can you make Oreos even more Oreo-y? Amy of the wonderful food blog Oh, Bite It! Shows you with her latest recipe. She wrapped Double Stuff Oreos with canned biscuit dough, then deep fried them until they were a rich shade of golden brown. Then she covered them with a glaze that she made with white Oreo stuffing. Now they’re ready to eat—although I would recommend serving them on a tasteful bed of Oreo cookies. | ||||||||
| The Wilsons - Chimichangas And Karate Chops Posted: 20 May 2015 11:00 PM PDT They're not your ordinary family, heck they're not even related, but Slade and Wade do have a lot in common- they're mercenaries for hire, they wear cool masks and they're both terminators who like to shoot things to death! Imagine how unstoppable the Wilsons would be if they ever teamed up, but alas they're from separate universes and crossovers are few and far between... This The Wilsons t-shirt by Shoden is a stroke of genius, and people will marvel at your geeky style from DC to Lian Yu, so pool your resources together and bring home this amazing body armor today! | Baby Panda Meets Mama for the First Time Posted: 20 May 2015 11:00 PM PDT This older footage of a baby panda bear being introduced to his mother at Taipei, Taiwan zoo is likely making the rounds now due to its rare and precious nature. | New Camera for Dogs Takes a Photo Whenever Your Dog Gets Excited Posted: 20 May 2015 10:00 PM PDT
Heartography is a new camera design by Nikon. It fits onto a dog’s chest with a harness. There’s a built-in heart monitor. When the dog becomes excited and his heart rate jumps, the camera takes a picture. This sets it apart from other dog-mounted cameras in that it is responsive to the dog’s stimuli. The obvious next step would be to create a program that would automatically uploads the photos to Instagram and Facebook with appropriate captions and commentary. Your dog deserves a following on social media. -via Dave Barry
| Delta Airlines Releases 'Internetest Safety Video on the Internet' Posted: 20 May 2015 09:00 PM PDT Delta Airlines pays respect to the popular meme-filled culture of the Internet in their latest in-flight safety video called, the "Internetest safety video on the Internet." And, yes, it's very Internet-y. The video features several cameos from Internet stars, such as: Keyboard Cat, Double Rainbow Guy, the cat in a shark costume on a Roomba vacuum cleaner, Nyan Cat, Dancing Baby, and MORE (I don't want to spoil it for you.)

| Your Favorite Characters as Cats Posted: 20 May 2015 08:00 PM PDT Artist Cassie Graus specializes in cats, which is about as optimal a choice as an artist can make. Everything is better with cats, including your favorite movies and television shows. That’s why she created posters that show the characters of Game of Thrones, Mad Max: Fury Road, Parks and Recreation, and Broad City as cats. The Arya and Joffrey are particularly effective illustrations. Adopt the cat of your choice. Conveniently, Theon is already fixed, so you won’t have to make an extra trip to the vet. | ||||||||
| Classical Paintings Photoshopped Into Modern Settings Posted: 20 May 2015 07:00 PM PDT Have you ever wondered what the subjects of classical paintings would look like when placed in a modern setting? I've wondered how people would handle seeing a naked person walking around town like they do in classical paintings, but Venus on the half shell in a modern setting has been artistically done to death. However, I can’t recall seeing composited images of classical paintings in the modern world that are as compelling, or entertaining, as the works of Alexey Kondakov. Alexey uses precise figure placement and an appropriate urban backdrop to sell the fact that the Madonna and child would ride the subway home, and bacchanalian revelry would take place under a highway overpass. See more of Alexey's cool classical painting mashups at Beautiful/Decay | ||||||||
| Beautiful New Crawfish Species Looks Like It’s Ready to Go to a Rave Posted: 20 May 2015 06:00 PM PDT
This is the Cherax pulcher. The latter term is related to the Latin adjective for “beautiful.” And indeed it is! This delicious-looking crawfish has been only recently classified. A German scientist named Christian Lukhaup found it in Hoa Creek, West Papua, Indonesia. It grows up to 12 centimeters long and is noted for its coat of many colors, including shades of blue and purple. There are at least 19 known Cherax species. This one has shown up at local markets since about the year 2000. I’ll take 5 pounds—extra spicy, please. -via The Soul Is Bone
| A Time Machine to Take You Back Posted: 20 May 2015 05:00 PM PDT Oh, to be five years old again! When playing and having fun were the most important things -except maybe a sweet treat when you’re done. What could possibly be the inspiration for today’s comic from Doghouse Diaries? That makes perfect sense. Next time we pass a swing set, I’ll be sure to refer to it as a time machine. Maybe I’ll even try it out! | ||||||||
| Army Captain in Captain America Shirt Rescues Two People from Fire Posted: 20 May 2015 04:00 PM PDT
Captain Steve Voglezon, US Army, was in Chatham County, North Carolina on Sunday when he saw a horrible head-on car collision. The cars caught on fire while two people remained inside, trapped and unable to escape. Most people run away from fires, but Captain Voglezon ran toward the burning cars. He didn’t have a vibranium shield, or even a firefighter’s protective clothing—just a Captain America shirt. He used a fire extinguisher to smash open a car window, then dragged the two occupants to safety. You can see the dramatic rescue in this video. I would like to see a Chris Evans, the actor who plays Captain America, wearing a Captain Voglezon shirt. -via Lyndsey Fifield
| Fascinating Facts From The Empire Strikes Back On Its 35th Anniversary Posted: 20 May 2015 03:00 PM PDT Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was released nationwide on May 21, 1980, which is 35 years ago tomorrow. Does that make you feel old? The movie received mixed reviews at the time, but now is considered the best of the six Star Wars films (so far). The problem back then was that it did not have a happy ending, but rather a cliffhanger that made us wait three years for the resolution in Return of the Jedi. That darkness became more appealing over time. And since then, we’ve found out that the finished movie differed in many ways from the original plan. Warning: spoilers ahead.
Minch Yoda? Yeah, that’s another change in the original plan. You’ll find out plenty of those changes in an anniversary post on The Empire Strikes Back at Uproxx.
| This High-Tech Collar Is a Smartphone for Your Dog Posted: 20 May 2015 02:00 PM PDT
DogTilligent has developed a dog collar unlike any other on the market. The All-in-One Smart Dog Collar has GPS, WiFi capability, an accelerometer, a thermometer, a speaker, LED lights, and a microphone. It helps a dog owner keep track of the dog by warning when the collar has traveled beyond a predetermined location. The Virtual Leash warns the dog when it’s moving away from a human companion by whistling, vibrating, and simulating a tug on the collar. Hopefully future versions will also have a display screen and app-uploading capability so that bored dogs can kill time by playing Candy Crush. -via Oh Gizmo

You'd think that an organization with so much power and unlimited resources would stop their name from being in the news, but the Illuminati was created to distract us all from the real shadow organization- the Pizzaminati. Bound by crust and melted cheese to keep the world hungry for another slice, the Pizzaminati are in our minds and in our bellies, waiting for our minds to be consumed by the power of the pizza pie! Warn the world about the power the almighty pizza pie possesses with this Pizzaminati t-shirt by Albyletoy, which side will you take in the upcoming pizzapocalypse? | Posted: 20 May 2015 12:00 PM PDT Celebrities know that their fame and fortunes can disappear at any time, so many of them branch out into different businesses. For sports stars, this is crucial because an athletic career has physical limits. For musicians and movie stars, it can be a good idea, but there have been some spectacular failures. John Green returns to the mental_floss List Show to tell us about some of the stranger businesse ventures owned by celebrities.
| 40 of the Weirdest Senior Photos Ever Made Posted: 20 May 2015 11:00 AM PDT (Photo: unknown)
It’s time to graduate from high school! That’s a crazy time of our lives. Some schools take special photos of graduating seniors and publish them in yearbooks. Normal people take formal photos that reflect a sober entry into adulthood. It’s no fun being normal. 22 Words rounded up 40 of the weirdest photos that graduating seniors took with the help of professional photographers. They are everything that youth should be.
| I Say Parmesan, You Say Pennsylvania Posted: 20 May 2015 10:00 AM PDT If you look up Parmesan (cheese) at the Cambridge Dictionaries Online, and click the icon for an audio clip, you’ll find that it is pronounced exactly like the state named after William Penn. In case it gets corrected, turn the audio on in this Vine. | ||||||||
| 23 Talk Show Innovations Created By David Letterman Posted: 20 May 2015 09:00 AM PDT David Letterman is leaving the talk show world behind, and thereby leaving a gap in late night larger than the one between his two front teeth that will soon be filled by the supremely talented Stephen Colbert. But even though Stephen will definitely measure up to Dave in terms of interviewing talent and likeability Colbert will never be able to match Letterman's gift for reinventing the talk show. From the post interview interview to the talk show host POV camera, the purposely hilarious top ten lists, the stupid funny contests and, my personal favorite, stupid pet (and human) tricks, Letterman added so much to the world of talk shows it's gonna be a crying shame to say goodbye. | Check out This Cool Collapsible Serving Bowl Posted: 20 May 2015 08:00 AM PDT
It lies flat until you pick up the handle. Then it neatly unfolds into a decorative serving dish. I’ve never seen anything like it, but several redditors say that they’re commonly sold by street vendors in Rome. If you have a scroll saw, you can make your own by following these instructions.
| Starving Felons, and Other Lessons from Prison Archaeology Posted: 20 May 2015 07:00 AM PDT Life in prison in the 18th and 19th centuries could be brutal, according to a memoir by convicted counterfeiter William Stuart. His accounts of starvation rations were taken with a grain of salt due to his reputation, but the reality is starting to be unearthed -literally. Old Newgate Prison in Connecticut was America’s first state prison when it opened in the 1770s. It closed in 1827, and was a museum until cracked and dangerous walls forced it to close in 2009. Before construction begins to repair the prison, a team of archaeologists is digging up clues to the institution’s history. What they’ve found so far is not pretty. Zooarchaeologist Sarah Sportman tells us of animal bones that prisoners consumed to supplement their diets.
Read about the prison, the project, and what we know about life inside Old Newgate prison at Atlas Obscura.
| Peter Dinklage Reminds You That His Game of Thrones Character Is Still Alive Posted: 20 May 2015 06:00 AM PDT Who is still alive in Westeros? My personal theory is that George R.R. Martin will conclude The Song of Ice and Fire by killing every single human being in Westeros and Essos, leaving only one person alive to take the Iron Throne. King Hodor will then starve to death after accidentally locking himself in a privy in the Red Keep. We no longer have Ned Stark, Robert Baratheon, or that mischievous rascal Joffrey. They’re all dead. But the eternally underestimated and yet unlucky Tyrion Lannister is still alive. Peter Dinklage, the actor who plays Tyrion on Game of Thrones, sings a boast of this small victory in this short music video. It’s a promotional item for the BBC’s charity fundraiser Red Nose Day.
He ends it with a triumphant mic drop. Well done, Tyrion. May you live for another episode. -via Nerd Bastards |
