| Mighty Morphin' Turtles - Mutant Ranger Power! Posted: 22 May 2015 05:00 AM PDT Mighty Morphin' Turtles by SimplePeteDoodles The ninja turtles were hanging out in Central Park one day when an alien spacecraft landed on the lawn, and some mighty rubbery looking aliens slithered out. They spoke in a strange tongue that sounded like sheets of plastic going through a power shredder punctuated with a loud "krang!", which totally took the wabu out of their cowabunga. The teenage mutants were about to bail on the whole alien scene when some old, ratty looking dude took them aside and offered them a job as power rangers... (Image credit: Towsonu2003) “Breaking wind,” as the English so politely call it, is a natural and inevitable part of life. So it’s not surprising that farts occasionally make it into the news. Scientists have long known that the farts and burps released by livestock are a significant source of greenhouse gases. But precisely how significant has been difficult to say because it’s almost impossible to accurately measure the emissions of animals out in the fields. In the summer of 2011, scientists at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory announced plans to develop a system for “auditing a herd’s collective flatulence” by shooting laser beams around the animals as they graze (and fart and burp) in their pastures. “We use lasers to interact with the gas,” researcher Alan Brewin told the Daily Telegraph. “The way the light is absorbed tells you what gas there is, how much of it there is, which direction it is flowing, and how fast.” In November 2012, Britney Spears’s former bodyguard, 29-year-old Fernando Flores, sued the singer, alleging that she paraded around her home in the nude, made “repeated, unwanted sexual advances,” and farted “unapologetically” in his presence. Flores asked for more than $ 10 million in compensation for “psychological trauma, anxiety attacks, depression and insomnia,” despite the fact that he’d worked for Spears for less than six months. “He’s a liar,” a spokesperson for the star told reporters. The case was settled out of court. (Image credit: Glenn Francis) _______________________________

| Study: Popular Song Lyrics Are Written at a Third-Grade Reading Level—And Are Dropping Posted: 22 May 2015 04:00 AM PDT Are you more literate than a third grader? If your vocabulary is limited to the most popular songs on the Billboard charts for the past 10 years, then that’s in doubt. Andrew Powell-Morse of the data blog SeatSmart compiled the lyrics from 225 of the most popular songs in the pop, country, rock, and hip-hop genres. He analyzed them with the Flesch-Kincaid grade index to generate reading level scores. On average, songs that were popular over the past 10 years were written at the third grade level, but that’s been steadily dropping over time. You can see more charts here, including ones that show gender and genre differences, as well as the grade levels of specific singers, such as Kanye West and Justin Timberlake. -via BuzzFeed | ||||||||
| Seven of the Most Expensive Television Shows Ever Made Posted: 22 May 2015 03:00 AM PDT
Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004, wasn't a show containing lavish sets. Most scenes were filmed either in a coffee shop setting or in one of two apartments. What made this show so expensive was its cast. One situation that made it incredibly costly for management was that the actors in the cast banded tightly together for salary negotiations, insisting on fair payment for the entire ensemble. That made it impossible for the network powers-that-were to divide and conquer the actors when it came to salary talks. According to Finances Online, as the popularity of Friends grew, the actors negotiated for more money in relation to the growth. By the time the show was producing its final season, each cast member was making $1 million per episode, causing the show’s budget to cost an exorbitant $10 million per. Read about the six other most costly television shows ever madehere.
| This Building Looks Like the Enterprise from Star Trek Posted: 22 May 2015 02:00 AM PDT These are the voyages of the office building NetDragon. Or, rather the flagship offices for the Chinese gaming company NetDragon Websoft. Liu DeJian, the chairman of the company, is allegedly a die-hard Trekkie who got an official license from CBS to design this building to look like the Enterprise. | “Elphie”: A Selfie Taken by an Elephant Posted: 22 May 2015 01:00 AM PDT Christian LeBlanc of Vancouver is an exchange student in Bangkok. He visited an elephant sanctuary in Thailand and was feeding bananas to the elephants when one of the pachyderms grabbed his camera! the result was a selfie taken by an elephant, or an “elphie.”
LeBlanc had turned on the time-lapse feature on his GoPro camera, so it automatically took a picture. As you can see, elephants don’t need a selfie stick because they carry their own extension around all the time! You can see more pictures of LeBlanc’s Thailand adventures at Buzzfeed.
| Like Bike Lanes? We Also Need Duck Lanes Posted: 22 May 2015 12:00 AM PDT
Life along the Regents Canal in London is a delightful experience. You can ride bikes or jog along rows of galleries and cafes. Tourists are fond of seeing it while riding on boats. Humans enjoy it, but so do ducks. Yet the little birds are a bit more vulnerable to collisions with people and bicycles. So the Canal & River Trust has set aside the inner stretch of pavement along the canal as a designated zone for ducks. They’re marked it with painted silhouettes of ducks. Cassie Werber writes for Quartz:

| Heartwarming PSA about a Dog’s Love Posted: 21 May 2015 10:00 PM PDT It’s a story about a man and his dog. They share a special life together. It carries on. | Posted: 21 May 2015 09:00 PM PDT These two teddy bears are the same age. Redditor UsernameIWontRegret explained what happened. His mother bought two identical bears when she had her first child in 1985. One was given to her new son, and the other was put into storage. Thirty years later, the second bear was brought out to give to that son’s first child, a little girl named Claire, who was born today. You can see the effects that a lifetime of love has on a teddy bear. If you doubt that it’s the same model of bear, there are plenty of folks who swore they had the same bear and several people posted pictures of theirs, in various stages of wear. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. | ||||||||

| RPG Rules.Mage - Don't Look To Me When You've Got Low HP Posted: 21 May 2015 07:00 PM PDT Every group of dungeon explorers needs a mage in their party, so he can fling magic missiles to soften up those nasty gnolls and read any magic books you find in treasure chests. However, don't look to the mage for scintillating conversation, because they're normally too busy memorizing spells or learning to speak a demonic language to chat. The only creature that can pull a mage's nose out of his spellbook is the mighty dragon, and if a dragon and mage get to talking you'd better make sure you're on the mage's good side! Dress up for roleplaying game night with this RPG Rules.Mage t-shirt by Mauro, the fashionable way to declare you've got spellcasting class! | Hot Dog Dishes From Around The World Posted: 21 May 2015 07:00 PM PDT Hot dogs are popular yet polarizing, tasty yet terrible on the stomach, kosher yet made of lips and...you know the rest. Whether you call them tube steak, bratwurst, frankfurters, polish sausages or weenies there's one thing all cylindrical meat products have in common- people around the world just can't get enough! The hot dogs we scarf down at sporting events or while waiting in line at Costco today are thought to have originated in Germany during the 1800s in their original weiner and frankfurter forms. Since then the hot dog has evolved into a fun handheld food product people the world over enjoy in their own unusual way. The Brazilian hot dog, which is topped with carrots, corn, parmesan cheese and french fries, may seem strange to those who like nothing more than relish and mustard on their dog. Then again, Brazilians find it strange that American men rarely wear swim briefs to the beach so I guess strangeness is relative! | Photos Of Classic Cars Next To Their Modern Version Posted: 21 May 2015 05:00 PM PDT Most auto enthusiasts agree that the cars of yesteryear are way cooler looking than those cookie cutter models being produced today, and even the modern throwback models simply cannot compare to the original. However, the only way to fully appreciate how cool cars used to look, and see how resurrected and updated classic models measure up to the original, is to see them both side-by-side. The modern Bentley can never compare to the classic (1936?) model featured up top, but the new Ford Shelby Cobra does look like one mean machine. And the Mercedes somehow still manages to look like a million bucks after all these years. Oh yeah, that's because they cost a million bucks! | The Crazy Plan for a Circular Airport in London Posted: 21 May 2015 04:00 PM PDT It was 1919. The aeronautical technologies developed in war would be put to peaceful use in commercial aviation. London needed a proper airport as a central hub for air traffic. The October 18 issue of the Illustrated London News suggested this wacky design: a curved ring resting on top of the skyscrapers of the city. What could possibly go wrong? In this case: nothing, because it was never built. This ring was one of many early design concepts for airports. You can see more eccentric designs at Ptak Science Books. -via Core77 | ||||||||
| Where Did That Graduation Song Come From? Posted: 21 May 2015 03:00 PM PDT My mind and my time have been preoccupied this week because my older daughter is graduating from high school this weekend. I’ve been to her art show, awards ceremony, spring concert, banquets, parties, the baccalaureate service, and still have more to come. We’ve assembled a dress, mortarboard, tassel, gown, stole, and honor cords to wear. And that song, seemingly endless as a class of 200 slowly enters, keeps going through my head. You know the song.
He wasn’t the first to use the song to enter the professional wrestling ring- that would be Gorgeous George. There are more traditions surrounding commencement exercises that you may wonder about, explained in The Stories Behind Graduation Traditions at mental_floss.
| Alternate Endings For 20 Classic Movies Posted: 21 May 2015 02:00 PM PDT Movies can become fan favorites for a variety of reasons, but chances are if the ending stinks the movie isn’t going to be well liked. That’s especially true of any movie that uses a surprise ending to shock viewers, but the real shock would have come after watching films like Rocky and Clerks with their original endings! Rocky was supposed to end with Balboa taking the big payola and throwing the fight against Apollo Creed, and Clerks originally ended with Dante being shot to death by an armed robber. Sometimes a script change is a good thing! See The Alternate Endings Of 20 Famous Movies at mental_floss | ||||||||
| In this Chinese Festival, Men Literally Shower Themselves With Molten Iron Posted: 21 May 2015 01:00 PM PDT Blacksmiths in the town of Nuanquan, China, throw molten metal in the air in a dangerous display of light and skill. It’s all part of the entertainment and celebration of the Da Shuhua festival, part of the New Year celebration.
As far as death-defying stunts go, molten metal beats fireworks almost every time. Read more about this festival and see many pictures at Scribol.
| Guy Buys An XL Tank Top, Internet Goes Crazy Posted: 21 May 2015 12:00 PM PDT If you would've told me 20 years ago that the internet age would feature silly stories about the real color of a dress and a guy raising way too much money to make a potato salad going wildfire viral I would have called you crazy. But you would have been right, and the internet is a much sillier, stranger, stupider and more ridiculous place than those of us who were online 20 years ago could have ever imagined. Case in point- itscostas took this picture and posted it to Reddit with the caption "Bought XL tank tops from Walmart so they're not skin tight, this is not what I expected": This hilarious (and seemingly NSFW but actually not) pic went crazy viral almost immediately, garnering over 3 million views on Imgur and over 2000 comments on Reddit in about two days. When will this viral madness end? When somebody breaks the internet by making this guy wear the "what color is this dress?" dress while eating potato salad. | ||||||||
| Hans Christian Andersen’s Taphephobia Posted: 21 May 2015 11:00 AM PDT No matter how remote the possibility, the thought of being buried alive is ghastly. It’s not so much the fear of death as it is the fear of waking up trapped in a grave. Once that fear takes hold of one’s consciousness, it can become an obsession. Taphephobia, as it is called, is not so rampant in the era of modern medical care, but for some folks in the past, it was terrifying. Hans Christian Andersen suffered from taphephobia, which only became worse when he fell ill.
Andersen wasn't the only one concerned about premature burial. Read about others who expressed such fear in the article 10 Famous People Who Were Afraid They'd Be Buried Alive at mental_floss.

| A Disney Princess For Every Stage Of Your Life Posted: 21 May 2015 09:00 AM PDT Disney princesses may not be the best role models for young folks, and they might not be the golden goddesses of morality they’re made out to be, but they do one thing really well- represent different stages of our lives. From the early days of wide eyed babyhood to the jaded, cynical thirtysomething years of drudgery and boredom, there's a Disney princesses that accurately represents every stage of our lives, at least according to cartoonist Paul Westover. As someone who learned the joys of hermitizing in my thirties I definitely relate to Elsa, and even though I don't have power over the cold my fridge has a built in ice maker! This satirical PSA is a commercial from Pizza Hut that describes the psychological damage that selfie sticks inflict on you and the physiological damage they inflict on people around you.
