This Man Hasn't Bathed In Over 60 Years Posted: 08 May 2015 04:00 AM PDT We take cleanliness for granted in this modern age, and consider personal hygiene to be an integral part of civilized society, but the definition of acceptable cleanliness levels vary by culture and country. Even though we can’t agree on the average number of times people should bathe in a week we can all agree that going without a bath for sixty years will make you one stinky human being! Amou Haji doesn't adhere to societal norms in any way- he's over 80 years old (7 years older than the average Iranian lifespan), he smokes animal feces and drinks water out of a rusty oil tin, his favorite food is rotten porcupine, and he hasn't taken a bath in over 60 years because he believes bathing will make him sick. Maybe Amou is on to something with his Bizarro health regimen? Nah, it's probably just the luck of the draw... -Via VeryViral
This Is What a Bird Strike on the Nose of a Jetliner Looks Like Posted: 08 May 2015 03:00 AM PDT
A Turkish Airlines 737 travelling between Istanbul and Nevsehir, Turkey, hit a bird nose-on. The dome forming the front caved in. The plane landed safely with no injury to any of the 125 passengers on board. A spokesman for Turkish Airlines insists that it's not a big deal. That portion of the plane is made with soft materials in order to absorb impacts like this. The Daily Mail reports:
That's good news. Perhaps Turkish Airlines can use this photo for its optimistic advertising. -via Daily Telegraph
22 Healthy and Filling Snacks Under 200 Calories Posted: 08 May 2015 02:00 AM PDT
One great tip from people who try to eat healthy or keep their weight down is to have snacks at the ready that won't break the calorie "bank" for the day. Everyone gets to the point in which they're hungry and don't feel like or have the time to make something. But if you have something stashed away in the fridge, freezer or glove compartment for such occasions, you can grab that instead of absent-mindedly eating a bag of chips or the like while tuned out and staring at a screen. This article has some great ideas for low-calorie snacks, many of which are packed with the fiber and protein necessary to keep you full. Are many of these foods off your radar or not something you buy at the store? Give them a chance once or twice — you might be surprised at how satisfying they are.
Albert Einstein’s Handwriting Turned into a Font Posted: 08 May 2015 01:00 AM PDT (Photo: Peat Bakke) This is the earliest known appearance of Einstein’s most famous equation. It was written in Einstein’s own handwriting, which typographer Harald Geisler describes as a mixture of the Latin alphabet and Kurrent, which is a classical German form of cursive. Two years ago, Geisler turned samples of Sigmund Freud’s handwriting into a usable digital font. You can type like Dr. Freud wrote by using the font called Siggy. Now Geisler is doing the same with Einstein’s handwriting. Fast Co Design describes the process:

Posted: 08 May 2015 12:00 AM PDT Ekant Veer noticed that the cat treats were going missing, although they were in a closed drawer, and the family never noticed the drawer open. They knew it must be the cat Anfield taking them, but how? So they set up a camera inside the drawer to capture the caper. We know cats are liquid, because they take the shape of their container. Anfield managed to snag the cat treats by oozing into the furniture without ever opening the drawer. He escaped the same way. -via Tastefully Offensive

It was unnecessary to draw so much attention to his search. As the 49th item on the classic Evil Overlord List points out, it’s more effective to act discreetly. 10 Fascinating Facts About the Placebo Effect Posted: 07 May 2015 10:00 PM PDT No matter how you look at it, the placebo effect is strange. Not only is the basic idea of feeling better through simply taking a sugar pill odd, but the fact that it even works when people know they're taking a placebo even weirder. Even stranger -it's getting stronger somehow. Learn more about the placebo effect in the video above or read about it in this cool TopTenz article. In the meanwhile, I'll be over here taking some Altoids and pretending they're happy pills -that should help my mood, right?

Many Seconds of Fun in Puerto Rico Posted: 07 May 2015 08:00 PM PDT Remember Kevin Blandford, the guy who had Not a Single Second of Fun in Puerto Rico? After his photo shoot of a vacation without his wife went viral, the ad agency that promotes Puerto Rico tourism offered him an all-expenses-paid trip back to the island so he could bring his wife and baby daughter! And this time around, he had a wonderful time. That included retaking the same photos in the same places with his family. Blandford even made sure he took the same shirts for the photos. Actor James Franco: "McDonald's Was There for Me When No One Else Was" Posted: 07 May 2015 07:00 PM PDT (Photo: Aphrodite-in-NYC) James Franco is an American actor famous for roles in movies that include The Interview, 127 Hours, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He now has fame, wealth, and influence. But he wasn't born that way. He worked his way up from the bottom, starting as an 18-year old in Los Angeles trying to break into acting. For three months, he worked at a McDonald's restaurant. Today, Franco published a reflective essay on that experience in the Washington Post. It's a lovely affirmation of the dignity of honest labor:

Eleven Unforgettable Television Cliffhangers Posted: 07 May 2015 06:00 PM PDT Watching an entire television series requires an investment from viewers- an investment of time, of mental energy, and sometimes an emotional investment in the characters we come to know and love/hate. The creators behind our favorite shows know full well about viewer investment, and they like to toy with our interest by leaving us dangling from one season to the next. They employ the time tested cliffhanger tactic and delight in watching us squirm as we struggle to figure out how the next season will begin, and what the return will be on our investment. From the shooting of a fictional oil tycoon to the shooting of an animated billionaire that poked fun at the cliffhanger trope, these are the mysteries that had TV viewers talking and gave rise to the idea of spoilers. The Top Ten Kids in the Hall Sketches, as Rated by the Kids Themselves Posted: 07 May 2015 04:00 PM PDT
The Kids in the Hall are a Canadian comedy troupe who had a sketch show that ran from 1989 to 1995. In their first United States reunion since 2008, the Kids — Mark McKinney, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Dave Foley and Scott Thompson — appeared at New York City's Town Hall this past Friday night to kick off a U.S. and Canadian tour. McCulloch spoke of the group's still-tight ties: "We've never broken up... we've never stopped. I will only stop being in the band when they put me in the ground. I think this is what we started doing—performing, being in front of people, watching how weird ideas take flight, and being with our brothers—and as we get older and have had our asses kicked with life or the industry, we've come to realize how sweet a thing being able to perform together is." Read an interview with the Kids and see which of their skits they rated in the top ten, and in what order, here.
Artist Turns Old Keys and Coins into Sculptures Posted: 07 May 2015 03:00 PM PDT Although the rest of us may throw away old keys, the Australian artist Moerkey puts them and old coins to beautiful use. InVADER Zolo - The Millennium's Most Misunderstood Smuggler Posted: 07 May 2015 01:00 PM PDT His plans to take over the world went so well he started looking for other planets to conquer, but somewhere along the way he underwent a wardrobe change that left the invader looking like one of the good guys. Luckily, he was dressed like a star smuggler and not some light knight, and he had a gun instead of a laser saber, so Zim still looked tough enough to demand respect. However, Gir was starting to get on his nerves with all that wookiee speak, and who wants to wage wars with a mouth full of chewie fur? This Bodybuilder Nearly Lost His Arms Trying To Look Like The Hulk Posted: 07 May 2015 12:00 PM PDT The Hulk is one of the most far-fetched superheroes in terms of believability, because a billionaire might be able to afford a suit of power armor but no amount of gamma rays will turn an average scientist into an eight-foot-tall wall of muscles. Brazilian bodybuilder Romario Dos Santos Alves is one of the Hulk’s biggest fans, but his love for Marvel’s mega-sized superhero nearly cost him his arms. Romario began injecting synthol (a mixture of oil and alcohol) into his arms to make them swell to titanic proportions, and these injections began to calcify his muscles, causing the muscle tissue to turn into "rocks". Doctors thought they might have to amputate his arms due to the hardening of the muscles, but they were able to remove some of the "rocks" from Romario's arms, teaching Romario a hard lesson about trying to inject his way to Hulkiness. -Via Fox2Now

Arnold Schwarzenegger Reenacts Most Of His Movies In Five Minutes Posted: 07 May 2015 10:00 AM PDT Arnold Schwarzenegger is far from the most diverse actor in Hollywood, and aside from Twins and Jingle All The Way his IMDB page consists of pretty much nothing but action flicks, but he has played some pretty iconic roles during his 40 years in the biz. From the Terminator Model 101 to the merc Dutch who took a mudbath to save humanity to the totally chill Mr. Freeze, Ahnold definitely knows how to play a man of action, but can the mighty muscleman reprise every role he’s ever played in five minutes? With a little help from James Corden, the former Governor of California proves he's still got what it takes to awe an audience and deliver quoteworthy one-liners like a total boss! -Via Polygon
The Internet Reacts to the New Hamburglar Posted: 07 May 2015 09:00 AM PDT
In its efforts to stay relevant and in the black, McDonald's is having to make a lot of changes. One such change made of late is introducing a new Hamburglar. While the old Hamburglar looked like something of a ghoul, the new "ready for live action" Hamdude is even being called "hot" by some observers. Whatever the general consensus ends up being, you didn't expect the internet to be quiet about such a major McDonald's milestone, did you?

Posted: 07 May 2015 08:00 AM PDT Teen girl movies have so many things that stick in your mind from those formative years: cluelessness, embarrassment, cattiness, failure, triumph, friends, romance, trying to find yourself, trying to fit in, and most of all, lessons learned. Real life doesn’t wrap up so nicely at the end, but the movies helped us work out that we weren’t the only ones going through those struggles. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the movie Clueless, Robert Jones put together a supercut of teen girls in movies over the past twenty years set to “Kids In America” by The Muffs. Surely you’ll recognize a bunch of them. -Thanks, Robert!

5 Secrets of a Game of Thrones Weapons Artist Posted: 07 May 2015 05:00 AM PDT Tommy Dunne was working as a welder when a friend hired him to make weapons for Braveheart. Nearly two decades later, as weapons master for Game of Thrones, he designs the show’s blades and bows, guiding them from sketches into the actors’ hands. He and a team of four artisans create hundreds of weapons per season, equipping everyone from the soldiers of Westeros and the men of the Night's Watch to the Khaleesi’s Dothraki warriors and the Wildings beyond the Wall. We asked him to share the tricks of his trade. 1. INSPIRATION COMES FROM HISTORY“I look at different periods and different eras—Egyptian, monolithic,” Dunne says. His crossbows, longbows, composite bows, and ballistas are all modeled on real weapons. "We handmade a catapult for the Unsullied this year, which is quite a large item, and quite powerful," he says. "It’s two tons of oak, nine foot length by ten foot height, with wheels. We have a couple of ballistas, which again are of historical reference." He uses the web for research, of course, but relies heavily on his own library to get the scales just right. 2. MATERIALS, MEANWHILE, ARE MODERN"Normally, we make a hero weapon, which is a little more presentable camera-wise—steel blade, brass crossguard, wooden handle, brass pommel, all that," Dunne says. "Obviously, we don’t fight with steel." Since actors can’t fight with actual steel swords, Dunne uses aircraft aluminum, which is strong but flexible. He also uses bamboo for training blades and rubber for weapons for extras or if the scene involves animals or stunts. "If the actor did fall or had to jump down quickly, there would be no injuries," he says. "We wouldn’t fight too much with rubber, unless there were stunts." The shields tend to be plastic—except the Unsullieds’. They get aluminum. "It varies in what we need," Dunne says. "We try to keep the shields strong, durable, lightweight, but flexible to a certain degree. We have to make sure they’ll withstand smashing together, but also, if someone falls over onto a shield, that they’re malleable and [the actor] won’t take as much of a hit." Arrows, meanwhile, are basically the real thing. "Our arrows have rubber tips, but 99 percent of them have wooden shafts and copper ramming as well," Dunne says. "An arrow has a residual strength, so once you let go of that string on the bow, it creates a bend in the arrow itself. If you have weak wood, it will shatter straightaway." 3. THERE’S NO SLACKING WHEN IT COMES TO WEAPONSEvery weapon, whether it’s for a major character or a minor one, is made with the same exacting level of detail. Why? Dunne says that if there’s a particular extra you want to keep out of the camera’s eye because you slacked on his weapon, it’s pretty much a guarantee he’ll end up front and center. "The spears, the shields—if a camera touches it in any way, shape, or form, we have to make sure it looks its best," he says. 4. WEAR AND TEAR IS AN ARTYou can’t expect characters to ride into their sixth epic battle of the season with weapons that look shiny and new—so Dunne makes sure to appropriately age and weather the props. "There’s nothing that would look brand spanking new or straight off the shelf—there would be areas that would be naturally worn from having your hand on the pommel or crossguard and that natural wear from constant use," he says. He might use sandpaper, stains, or dyes to make sure a buckle or blade shows its age. 5. WEAPONS ARE CUSTOM-MADE FOR THE ACTORSIn addition to considering a character's costume and backstory, Dunne has to take the actors’ proportions into account when designing their weapons. “You don’t want to make something that’s too small or too big or too weak for the actor,” he says. “The actors, they love us; we’ve had no complaints. There’s a lot of 'My weapon is cooler than your weapon.' The Mountain’s got such a big sword, and you get people going, ‘Why didn’t you make me that? Why can’t I have that?’ You’re not the Mountain! He’s a huge guy. Absolutely massive. It's one of those things."
