As Nepal recoils from the devastating earthquake it suffered on April 25, communication service providers (CSPs) have sprung into action. In the U.S., a large collection of CSPs have waived charges for calls and texts to Nepal, including AT&T, Skype, Sprint, T-Mobile, TWC, and Verizon. Vodafone has deployed an "Instant Network" team on the ground to connect rescue workers and families, and like many other companies, has made a large donation to relief efforts through the Vodafone Foundation.
Connectivity is crucial in times like these, but it can also help reduce crime before it happens. Ericsson has reported some interesting outcomes following the implementation of a connected smart city solution in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. The system includes Ericsson's Integrated Operations Center, connected video, 100 miles of fiber, and systems integration software. Users can quickly and efficiently communicate urgent information, which improves public safety and saves lives. Check out the results.
The Comcast-TWC merger went belly up last week, but many others are moving forward as the industry continues its consolidation trend. LightTower Networks has scooped up Fibertech Networks, NetScout completed its acquisition of Tektronix, Fluke, and Arbor, and Amdocs will add to its extensive capabilities with the planned purchase of Comverse's BSS business.
