Explore This Map and Then Take Action to Protect Our Precious Places! Dear Indiana,
Because of new federal regulations, fracking is continuing in some of our favorite parks and forests, but we can act now to stop it. Will you email Rep. Derek Kilmer, asking them to support a bill to ban fracking on public lands?
We put together this map to show you exactly what's at stake if we don't act now. - The yellow spots indicate federal lands — public lands that are essentially for you, me and everyone else, including national forests, hiking and biking trails, hunting, fishing and gathering locations, and more.
- The red spots are areas where industry is fracking for oil and gas, or could be fracking for it soon.
- The blue pins are just a few of the national forests and other public lands that are threatened by fracking.
Perhaps you've taken a trip to or through many of these places or found yourself in awe over a scenic photograph, dreaming of the day you can visit a national treasure. From places as significant as Glacier National Park to the Florida Everglades, these lands are part of our American heritage and should be managed to conserve and protect them for future generations. We must do what we can to stop fracking from destroying our heritage. Will you urge your member of Congress to act now to keep fracking from threatening your treasured places?
The powerful oil and gas lobby has convinced the powers in Washington to act in their interest by allowing fracking on public land. Fracking results in harm to people's health, accidental spills of toxic waste, air pollution, earthquakes, drinking water contamination, habitat destruction and even more climate change. The only way to protect ourselves and our land from the risks of fracking is to ban it altogether.
Thankfully, we have allies who agree with us in Congress. On Earth Day, Representative Pocan (WI-2) introduced the Protect Our Public Lands Act, which would ban fracking on federal public land, and more legislators are joining as co-sponsors every day. While this bill would only affect public land managed by the federal government, it's a start in the right direction to stop fracking altogether. Ask Rep. Derek Kilmer to support the Protect Our Public Lands Act.
We're often told that we'll never be able to ban fracking. After all, who can stop the oil and gas industry? But after years of our persistent emails, phone calls, letters, meetings, rallies and movement building, New York banned fracking in December, and, to date, more than 450 communities across the country have passed measures against fracking. The fight will continue, and we hope you'll stay with us until fracking no long poses a threat to our drinking water, communities and precious public places.
