A brand new study indicates that taking just a simple kidney test could offer some insight into the potential for risky cardiovascular outcomes down the road. The study looks at something called the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and a drug called albuminuria which has helped to increase the accuracy of these predictions. Dr. Kunihiro Matsushita comments, If health care providers have data on kidney damage and kidney functionwhich they often dothey should be using those data to better understand a patients risk of cardiovascular disease. He also says, This study tells us we could do even better with information that often times we are already collecting. Furthermore, the study authors also say, A key contribution of this paper is to bring urinary ACR to the front stage for risk prediction. However, in daily clinical practice, primary care physicians do not routinely assess urinary ACR in individuals without diabetes, and thus cannot diagnose chronic kidney disease when estimated GFR is at or above 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2. This fact might result from the absence of urinary ACR from some key guidelines. |
