Charles Kennedy, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats, has died aged 55.
His family confirmed the news of his passing on Tuesday morning and politicians have been paying their tributes.
Kennedy was only the party's second leader and was elected as the MP for Ross, Cromarty and Skye in 1983, aged 23.
At the time, he was the youngest ever MP.
He fought against the 2003 war in Iraq, the only major party leader to do so.

But he also fought his own demons, being treated for alcoholism in 2006.
His death comes less than a month after Kennedy lost his seat to the SNP.
Newsbeat spoke to Darren Grimes, 21, a member of the Lib Dems
Darren says Charles hasn't only helped shape the party, he's had a massive lasting impact on UK politics.
The world would be a better place if there were more like him
Darren

"When I woke this morning and found out that Charles Kennedy had passed, I couldn't believe it. He was only 55 years old.
"A lot of people forget because of personal struggles in his life just how much of a victory he took the Liberal Democrats towards, especially after Iraq and a very authoritarian in New Labour's time in government.
"He managed to amass over 60 seats which was the Liberal Democrats greatest seat share in 80 years. So he was a real liberal champion in that respect.
"He resonated with everyone and will be sorely missed."

What was it about him that made him so popular?
"I think he was able to get down with the people, so to speak. He spoke to them in a way which didn't sound like it condescended or patronised.
"He actually had a way of speaking to people which went beyond political rhetoric. He related to people in his constituency. They called him Charlie.
"He had a certain way of connecting with people on a level that went beyond regular, mundane politics."
I think that Charles gave a voice that was needed for over a million people who campaigned against the Iraq war

Charles was a regular TV guest, including slots as a panellist and host on Have I Got News For You, which surely helped that?
"Absolutely, being known as chat show Charlie (a name his critics made up to mock him but which his supporters adopted) is quite an amazing thing.
"A lot of politicians are wary of being on these shows in case it hurts their reputation. But Charles just didn't think like that.

"There was no ulterior motive. He was a liberal politician who wanted to implement liberal policy."
He was Tony Blair's most vocal critic over the Iraq war as well. In fact, he was the only major party leader to oppose the war, despite it being unpopular with the majority of voters at the time...
"Well that was a massive risk at the time because you had the Labour party who were for the war in Iraq and the Conservatives who were also for .
"I think that Charles gave a voice that was needed for over a million people who campaigned against the Iraq war.
"He was very much needed, a liberal voice to say, 'Look, this isn't the path we should be going down', and quite clearly it was not."
Do you think he's had a lasting impact on the party as it is today?
"Yeah, I do.
"Obviously his style of campaigning and his seat share in 2005. Although much of that has gone now, there's a good chance we'll be able to get it back because of the good work of Charles and other liberals in the community."

Of course, he also had problems with alcohol which eventually led to him standing down as leader. Does that affect his legacy?
"If there's a big scandal, like alcoholism, the media do pick up on that sort of thing.
"But I honestly don't think that impacts on people who knew him, on people who followed his career, because they all realised what a completely selfless person he was and what a great politician he was.
"And the world would be a better place if there were more like him.
"He would have been great in the upcoming EU referendum - he won't be known just for [his problems]. He was so much more than that."
Why would he have been so good in the EU referendum?
"He was always pushing for the party to be an internationalist voice.
"He believed that in an increasingly globalised world, having Britain in Europe was the only way forward.
"And I think that's the message the party needs pushing. And he was one of the first people to get out there and voice that."
