The Tuesday death of a baby who had heart surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach is the ninth such incident since a new program launched in 2011, according to a story tonight on CNN. From 2011 to 2013, the program had a 12.5 percent mortality rate for open-heart surgeries, according to a CNN report that aired Monday. St. Mary's Medical Center photo St. Mary's Medical Center Post coverage: CNN puts St. Marys infant heart surgery deaths at three times national average In a letter to employees about the investigation, St. Mary's CEO Davide Carbone backed the program and surgeon Michael Black, the CNN story said. "The patients we serve are afflicted with severe life-threatening conditions, and it is impossible to eliminate the risk of mortality," the letter said. St. Marys insisted Tuesday that the infant mortality rate in its pediatric open heart surgery unit is consistent with the national average, accusing CNN of trying to mislead the public with skewed arithmetic, according to a report in The Post. The CNN report also upset families whose babies were saved through the program, such as Pierre Rodriguez of Royal Palm Beach. He said his infant daughter, Amelia, was saved by an operation in November 2013 to repair a hole in her heart. Rodriguez told The Post that the report was absolutely one-sided and that he doubted that the network spoke with parents such as himself who had good experiences. | |||||||||||||||
