Seven villages will work with 40 interns The Uganda Village Project (UVP) summer internship program is off to a  great start. UVP relies heavily on the interns to implement our activities. Given our small staff, interns play a very important role in the communities where we work and in just eight weeks get a large number of projects implemented. In the communities, interns collect data to strengthen our monitoring and evaluation efforts. They also conduct education sessions about preventable illnesses resulting from poor sanitation and hygiene, avoiding HIV, preventing and treating malaria, family planning information, and more. This year we have seven teams that are each living and working in a rural village. Their efforts will be a great asset to keeping villages healthy!
Who are UVP interns? We have an amazing team of interns this summer. There's Susan, who spent a year living and volunteering in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania; Ali, who was in AmeriCorps with the American Red Cross and hopes to get her Masters in Public Health; Kenneth, a three-time Ugandan intern who is a master at teaching Lusoga; and Johnny, who is taking a gap year before continuing on to medical school, just to name a few! The breadth of experiences they bring add an amazing dimension to the internship and help them learn from each other while helping UVP implement and improve programs. We sat down with one of our interns for a closer look at her experience this summer.
 Sofia studies Biology and Environmental Studies at Oberlin College. She chose to participate in the UVP internship because she has a passion for helping communities and people in need. In the village she says she has found friendly people and was very excited to experience that kind of hospitality. She's enjoying her village life with team members, and loves the fun she has with the kids -- especially when she taught the kids to break dance! One of the challenges so far has been "village time" and needing to remind everyone in the village about coming to things at the scheduled time. With six weeks to go, Sofia looks forward to having a productive summer internship and a good experience in Africa.
Meet Kelly  We're pleased to announce our newest Managing Director in Iganga! Kelly Child recently joined UVP to oversee programs, manage the office, and work closely with staff to ensure that everything runs smoothly in Uganda.
What attracted you to UVP? UVP is in a growth period and I was very interested in being a part of that growth in a way that streamlined programs to make even more of an impact in the area we serve. And I get to live in Uganda!
What background do you bring to UVP? I've worked in a variety industries including software for public safety, childcare, and electrical construction with large and small for-profit and non-profit organizations. Most recently, I was working with the Pinewood Springs Fire Protection District to build a new fire station, overseeing everything from fundraising to building design.
What are you looking forward to over the next few years? I'm most looking forward to seeing UVP grow in every way, ultimately resulting in an increase in the population we serve. I (as well as all the staff) truly enjoy hearing individual's stories and seeing how our work impacts people on a personal level.
Tell us something unique about you. I play the ukulele! Not very well, but taking time to learn a new skill is a great way to keep your mind vibrant :)
