15 Secrets of Apple Store Employees

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 04:00 AM PDT

There are 265 Apple stores in the U.S. (none near me, of course), and that means lot of employees with stories to tell. Some of the things that go on in Apple stores might reinforce your belief that Apple is a cult, if that’s what you think, but the loyalty-building customs are not much different from other companies. And the way they look at customers will not surprise you. But this fact stood out to me:

6. THEY LOVE SEEING VINTAGE DEVICES.

It’s not all about the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch. Most employees have seen their fair share of super old Apple gear. “I had one lady who brought in an Apple IIe,” Eric says. “I used that in middle school.” Products that have not been manufactured for more than five are labeled “vintage” and anything that was discontinued more than seven years ago is “obsolete.” Apple Store employees can’t order parts for these gadgets, but they don’t mind giving them a once-over. “It’s amazing what people will keep,” Eric says. “It goes to show the support and the viability of the products Apple produces that you can see things that are 10 to 12 years old [and] people are still using them.”

I drive a 26-year-old car and live in a 109-year-old house. The idea that something just a few years old is “vintage” and you can’t get parts for it is beyond my understanding. I still have trouble believing that my 2009 Mac Mini will no longer support the applications my kids use for school. Sigh. But there’s a lot more about Apple stores and their employees you’ll want to read at mental_floss.

Amazingly Dreamy Digital Collages Of Animals

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 02:00 AM PDT

The digital collages created by Sarah DeRemer are delightfully surreal and totally dreamy, but whether that dream is good or bad is purely a matter of perception.

Her works give the viewer a feeling of isolation, and yet the magical elements found in each piece take that isolated feeling and turn it into a sense that you’re watching a scene being performed just for you.

Sarah's works also have a dark yet playful sense of humor that really works well with the animal subjects, since the animal kingdom is full of comedic and tragic moments, which sometimes occur simultaneously.

Robot Chicken DC Comics Special 3: Magical Friendship

Robot Chicken’s third DC Comics special is coming to Adult Swim this fall. If the full show is anything like the preview here, it’s going to be insane.

It explores the multiverse theory, and crosses over with other universes, so that we see different versions of our favorite superheroes. Seeing a different version of yourself can be pretty unnerving. Especially if you’re an ape. -via Uproxx

The Space Probe Exploring Pluto Right Now Is Carrying the Ashes of Its Discoverer

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 10:00 PM PDT

(Images: NASA)

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is conducting humanity's first close observation of the planet Pluto. Scientists are mesmerized by the first high-resolution images of this mysterious world at the border of our solar system.

Pluto is ancient, but our knowledge of it is not. It was in only 1930 that Clyde Tombaugh, a 23-year old astronomer from Kansas, found it hidden away in the distance (though this is disputed). Tombaugh went on to have a long and fruitful career in astronomy before dying in 1997 at the age of 90.

When NASA launched New Horizons in 2006, the probe carried a portion of Tombaugh's ashes. So in a way, he's now traveled all the way to the world that he discovered. NBC News talked to his family:

"My dad would have been thrilled," Alden Tombaugh, 70, told NBC News. "He always said that if he had the chance, he wanted to visit the planets. And a little part of him is going to get to do that."

Nazi Telegram That Drove Hitler to Suicide Sat For Years in South Carolina Safe

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Image: Alexander Historical Auctions

According to the Washington Post, a telegram that changed the course of World War II and prompted Adolf Hitler to commit suicide was recently sold at auction. The document sat in a safe in South Carolina for years, allegedly due to the original owner's inability to read German and failure to consult with a historian or obtain a translation that might have emphasized its historical importance. The telegram, written to Adolf Hitler by Nazi second-in-command Hermann Goering, sold at auction for $55,000.

Read the history of the document changing hands, learn how the issue of true ownership is clouded, and see the translated text of the telegram here.

Some of The Weirdest Drinks Sold In Japan

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 04:00 PM PDT

I'm willing to bet that you've never sat back, sipped on a nice beer and thought, "you know, this could really use some milk." Amazingly though, someone in Japan did, which is why Bilk is a real thing you can buy -featuring 70% beer and 30% milk.

Of course, I would drink a six pack of Bilk before I ever touched Placenta 400,000, which, as the name suggests, is made with real swine placenta. These terribly terrifyinig drinks and more were included in InventorSpot's list of the weirdest drinks in Japan, and believe it or not, this is actually the second such list -the original included such specialties as salad-flavored water and beer made for children.

Darth Vader Attends Comic-Con 2015 To Force Choke Rebel Scum

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 02:00 PM PDT

You may see a dozen or more cosplayers dressed as Darth Vader on any given day during Comic Con, but if you ever see one who can actually force choke you it’s time to head for Hall H!

This year Con attendees were accosted by a seemingly normal Darth cosplayer with a camera who was actually helping the sinister masterminds at Wired seek out and eliminate Rebel scum.

So was Darth's visit the beginning of a full blown Imperial assault on San Diego, or just an excuse for people to act silly on camera? The decision is up to you...

Sixteen Classy Facts About Anchorman

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 01:00 PM PDT

James Spader in Pretty in Pink | Image: Paramount Pictures

Ah, James Spader. In the 1980s, he was quite the pretty picture of aloof, callous privilege. And many of us loved to hate him (and hated to love him). Over the years, the actor has become a bit wider in the middle and more than a bit lovably eccentric.

But did you know that Spader was dead serious, even "obsessed" with acquiring the gooftastic part of intellectually challenged weatherman Brick in Will Ferrell's popular comedy Anchorman? According to this Mental Floss collection of facts about the film, the part went to Steve Carrell once it was decided by the principals that Spader was “too good” of an actor to be in the movie altogether.

Don't miss the opportunity to take Brick up on his exclusive invitation to the Pants Party and follow the link above for more Anchorman facts.

An Awkward Family Dinner

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 12:00 PM PDT

This is not a movie set, or anywhere near one. This is not Asgard. Redditor GavinWakeUpCall posted this picture, taken by a friend, of a scene at the Broken Yolk Cafe in San Diego, where Comic Con is going on. These guys have Thor and Loki down to the smallest detail, even the not-talking-to-each-other part. I wonder if the waitress had any trouble moving Thor’s hammer to set their plates down. And another question: what do Norse gods order at a diner?

Dog Rescues Baby Dolphin

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 10:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Rich Wilcock was photographing the beach at Gwynedd, Wales. He was accompanied by Leia, his Cocker Spaniel. Leia kept on barking at and nudging Wilcock, drawing his attention to a spot on the beach. There, Leia had found a beached baby dolphin. The Daily Post quotes Wilcock:

“At first I thought it was a baby shark, it was only about one and half foot but on a closer inspection I could see the blow hole on top of his head and realised it was a dolphin.

“There was nobody around for miles so I did what I could as gently as possible. I lifted him gently under the belly and popped him back amongst the waves and he swam away into deeper water.

The video above shows the entire rescue.

Comedian's "Customer Service" Facebook Responses to Corporate Complaints are Often Things of Beauty

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 08:00 AM PDT

Ben Palmer, a comedian from Atlanta, is livening up corporate Facebook accounts left and right with his responses to mostly inane customer complaints under the account name "Customer Service." Often issued with a breezy "hope this helps" at the end, his responses are guaranteed to give these generally clueless customers double-take moments of confusion.

Take a look at some of Palmer's answers to these gravely serious customer service snafus here, and visit his website to see more. -Via Dangerous Minds

Man Trains Seagull to Dance

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 07:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

While on his lunch break, YouTube user MrTomostan of the seaside town of New Quay, Wales taught a seagull to dance for treats.

The bird appears to be engaging in wormdancing. Seagulls do this to encourage worms in the sand to burrow to the surface to be eaten.
