----------------------------------------------------

The Odd Couple by Neil Simon

The Odd Couple was one of Royal National Theatre of Britain's top 100 plays of the 20th century.

The Odd Couple is a full-length comedy by Neil Simon. Two suddenly single pals — a sloppy sportswriter and a fastidious news writer — strain their friendship by turning roommates and unconsciously repeating the same mistakes they made in the marriages they just left. Arguably the funniest comedy ever written, this Neil Simon classic is a four-time Tony Award-winner.

The Odd Couple opens as a group of the guys assembled for cards in the apartment Oscar Madison, a carefree, positively unkempt, divorcé. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger who has just been separated from his wife. Since he is very fastidious and none too tense, they fear he might commit suicide and go about locking all the windows. While it would seem bunking together would be a last resort for these two, the decision to do so mixes slob with neat-freak, leading to total madness for them, and laugh-out-load comedy for the audience.

Hamlet (Illustrated) by William Shakespeare, Illustrated by Harold Copping

An illustrated collector's edition of the classic play by William Shakespeare.

Hamlet guarantees a wealth of possible interpretations as well as teasing us with the promise of new meanings that always seem to be just out of reach. Playing Hamlet is considered the greatest challenge for any actor, interpreting the verses which are concerned with ideas of theatricality and performance, along with the struggle to discover one's real self.

Thought to have been written between 1599 and 1601, Hamlet relates the struggle of the individual soul set afloat on a sea of troubles and madness. Over four hundred years later, with its recurring themes of death, revenge and the impossibility of certainty, Hamlet remains enduringly relevant to, and popular with, a modern-day audience.

This handsome edition of Hamlet is decorated throughout with the illustrations of Harold Copping, and makes a wonderful addition to any classic library.

Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett

Waiting for Godot was named by the Royal National Theatre of Britain as one of the top 100 plays of the 20th century.

Waiting for Godot is a full-length drama by Samuel Beckett. By the side of a deserted country road, two wanderers wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with a mysterious man named Godot, who they hope will change their lives for the better. Instead, two eccentric travellers arrive, one man on the end of the other's rope. The results are both funny and dangerous. A classic of modern theatre and perennial favourite of colleges and high schools.

Written in 1949 and dubbed "the most important play of the 20th century" by The New York Times, the story line revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone — or something — named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett's language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existentialism of post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time. A truly haunting, perplexing and sardonically amusing play, generally recognized as the quintessential play of the 20th century.

Waiting for Godot premiered in French as En attendant Godot at Théâtre de Babylone, a tiny avant-garde theatre on the Left Bank in Paris in 1953. It has become one of the most important and best known plays of the 20th century. An incredible roll call of actors and directors have wrought interpretations of Beckett's fascinatingly elusive masterpiece — its debut in English was directed by a 24-year-old Peter Hall; the ever-patient Vladimir and Estragon have been played by actors including Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall and Nathan Lane.
