Millenials of New York

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 04:00 AM PDT

"For months I was utterly miserable. I was going to therapy three times a week and actually listed 'crying' as one of my hobbies on Tinder. After realizing nobody was going to solve my problems for me, I went to the zoo and paid $80 to take a picture with a penguin wearing a tiny sweater. I posted it on Instagram and it got 123 likes! 123!! I suddenly felt like my life had been filled with a purifying, healing light. I was able to completely stop going to therapy, and last weekend my ex even texted me 'Mouth?' at 3 AM. I think things are finally starting to turn around. Thank you so much, Instagram."

Elite Daily created a Facebook page called "Millenials of New York" that is an entertaining satire of the popular "Humans of New York." Instead of hearing about the plights and passions of the diverse New York City population, we are treated to millenial tales of woe about rancid artisanal kumquat compote and beards that won't grow past the stubble stage. MONY's stories, like HONY's, will hit you right smack in the feels and could even prompt you to purchase a pair of oversized, fully ironic eyewear.

Check out the Millenials of New York Facebook page for more entries like these.

"I’m a feminist, okay? And I don’t care who knows it. I believe that women are JUST as capable as men, and deserve the right to equal pay. Guys who wouldn’t vote for someone based on their gender offend me to my core. It’s ridiculous, in this day and age, to have a problem with a woman in a position of power. Personally, I would be overjoyed with a female president if she’s not fat."

"It's literally impossible to take advantage of the city when everything is as expensive as it is. Isn't DeBlasio supposed to be doing something about these ridiculous rent prices? It feels like by the time I'm done paying for other basic necessities—groceries, electric, Internet, MetroCard, Sunday brunches, margarita machine maintenance, feather headdress-making lessons, Saturday brunches, an officially licensed SoulCycle machine for my apartment so I don't have to worry about classes filling up—there's really nothing left for me to have any fun with. I don't want to ask my parents to up my allowance but I don't know if I have a choice anymore."

Barber Offers Free Haircuts to Kids Who Read to Him

Courtney Holmes, a barber in Dubuque, Iowa, wants to encourage kids to read. So if a child sits in his chair and reads a book to him, Holmes will cut the kid's hair--for free! He's offering this opportunity as part of a local back-to-school program. The Globe Gazette reports:

Tayshawn Kirby, 9, of Dubuque, read from "Fats, Oils and Sweets," by Carol Parenzan Smalley, informing Holmes that the average person eats 150 pounds of sugar each year. Before Tayshawn's 10-year-old brother, Titan Feeney, took his turn in the barber chair, he told his brother the new look was great.

"I just want to support kids reading," Holmes said.

Caitlin Daniels, grade-level reading coordinator with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, also helped struggling readers in the barber chair.

"It's great. All the kids, they want to have a good haircut to go back to school," she said. "They're paying through reading."

The Chilling Human Remains of Peru’s Ancient Chauchilla Cemetery

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 02:00 AM PDT

Chauchilla Cemetery in Peru was in operation from about 200 CE to about 1000 CE. Situated in the Sechura Desert near Nazca, the conditions are so dry that those buried in the open-air tombs became mummified. Some even retain their skin and hair! Many have been vandalized by graverobbers over the centuries, but what is left of them still sits in the desert, facing the east, as was the custom. Read more and see plenty of pictures of the mummies of Chauchilla Cemetery at Urban Ghosts.

Kitty Has Rude Awakening When Jumping into the Bathtub

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 01:00 AM PDT

YouTube Link

A sweet looking cat gazes longingly at an inflatable rubber ducky toy floating in a bathtub full of water and suds. The cat likely has kitty visions of calmly sailing above the water on the nice cushy float. Yet once the cat jumps, reality sets in. Water is deeper than kitty. Water is wet. Suds are... sudsy. The cat scrambles out of the bathtub and goes running for the hills, likely never to make that mistake again. Via Uproxx

Pin-Up Portraits Of The Men Of Twin Peaks

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 12:00 AM PDT

Seeing a classic pin-up pose in a photograph reminds us of classic artists like Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas and classic photographers like Bunny Yeager, giving the viewer a friendly dose of nostalgia from days gone by.

Thoroughly modern geeks don’t have as much reverence for the classics, as their idea of a classic is often something that came out not so long ago.

So what can bring these two schools of retro cool together? These amazing Men Of Twin Peaks pin-up portraits by Emma Munger.

With plenty of classic poses to keep the old timey fans happy and the ultra hipness of David Lynch to satisfy even the most jaded Hipster, these are one set of portraits worth skipping a slice or two of cherry pie to buy.

Anita Pointer: Civil-Rights Activist, Pop Star, and Serious Collector of Black Memorabilia

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Even before she hit the bigtime as a part of The Pointer Sisters, Anita Pointer was already into antiques. She and her sisters June, Ruth, and Bonnie wore vintage clothing from the ‘40s onstage. Anita Pointer stills sings, but she’s also a serious collector of black memorabilia. The objects in her collection would cover a basketball court, by her estimation. These include slave artifacts, celebrity souvenirs, and racist caricatures of the Jim Crow era.

Pointer: I’ve always loved antiques, even as a little girl. My grandmother and my great-grandmother kept these trunks full of old clothes in the garage. Me and my sister Ruth used to play in those old clothes, putting them on and walking around the neighborhood. People would laugh at us, but we didn’t care. We’d be clonking down the street in old high-heeled shoes. It was so funny. I just love the memories of old things, so I guess it was a natural evolution for me to get into collecting. But as a child, I never saw any of the black memorabilia that I’m collecting now. Those racist caricatures weren’t in our home.

I suppose white people made these caricatures for themselves—to laugh at them, I guess. I first discovered black memorabilia in 1998. That year, I was being inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, in Little Rock, Arkansas. They gave me an award for my contribution to music and had a big to-do for it, where I met Governor Mike Huckabee. After the ceremony, we were headed to Prescott, Arkansas, where my momma’s from, and we saw an antiques store. I’ve always loved looking around antiques stores, so we stopped. That’s when I saw Dancing Sam, the first piece of black memorabilia that I bought. He was a painted black wooden doll, with a wire holder on his back and little hinges on his limbs. You hold him on top of a plywood platform, and you tap the plywood so he jumps and dances around. The packaging says, “Hours and hours of fun for your children.” [Laughs.] I was like, “Whoa, you mean kids would sit there and play with this for hours?” Dancing Sam was black with white lips, like blackface makeup, so he intrigued me. It all started there. I began going to antiques stores and picking up black memorabilia wherever I could find it.

Caricatures like these are shameful artifacts of our past, which Pointer believes are worth preserving to remind us of how things were. Collectors Weekly interviewed Anita Pointer about her childhood, her Civil Rights activities, her singing career, and her collection of black memorabilia.

RIP, The Last of the Dam Busters

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 10:00 PM PDT

(Image: Lucasfilm)

Yes, that’s an image from the climactic trench run scene at the end of Star Wars. It’s not an error. That scene was inspired by the 1955 British war film The Dam Busters. That movie was a retelling of a real-life and truly extraordinary raid conducted by the Royal Air Force during World War II.

(Photo: Alan Gibson/New Zealand Herald/Associated Press)

Flight Lieutenant John Leslie Munro, the last of the heroes who participated in that daring strike at Germany’s industrial heartland, died on Monday at the age of 96.

The raid was a marvel of both martial courage and technical innovation. In order to destroy heavily fortified dams providing electricity to the Nazi war machine, engineers invented special bombs that would bounce on the water in a particular way, then impact on the dams, then detonate. Of the 133 men who participated in this dangerous but successful raid on May 16, 1943, only 77 returned to Britain.

Munro was the pilot of a Lancaster bomber on the mission. Flak blew a hole in it, but he managed to bring it safely back to base. After the war, Munro returned to his native New Zealand and became a farmer. He also served as mayor of the town of Waitomo on the North Island. You can read his obituary in the New York Times.

Comedy Sketch: What If We Treated Sleep Like Exercise?

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Bro, do you even nap? You'd better. You've got to look healthy. And that means sleep. And if you're not doing it to be well, then you need to sleep because the ladies love a well-rested man. If you know what I mean.

The comedy troupe Collective Noun imagines life if we took sleep as seriously as exercise. It reminds me to get around to reading Dangerously Sleepy: Overworked Americans and the Cult of Manly Wakefulness. I should stay up to make sure that I get that done.

Striking Shots From Wes Anderson Films That Could Be Paintings

Say what you will about film director Wes Anderson but he, however eccentric, is an auteur whose talents are widely recognized. He may not be a maker of box office smashes, yet each of his quirky films have his signature obsession with symmetry and an overall striking aesthetic. So much so that if you pull still shots from his films, many appear as if they could stand alone as art found in a gallery, such as a photo or painting. Above and below are a few examples; see more lovely shots in this article

The Waffle Dog

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Sometimes you have to think outside the box and make do with what you have. Ralph Roberts made a meal last night that you may want to remember when you’ve got an odd assortment of foodstuffs.

Creativity Unleashed: The Waffle Dog! ... came in late for dinner tonight. Had some gourmet Boar's Head hot dogs which fit the bill for my quick supper but, alas, no buns nor even sliced bread in the house. However, I DID find some frozen waffles in the freezer. Using the waffle as the bun (they folded up nicely after baking it all with cheese on top in the toaster oven), I had an enjoyable repast. I now claim credit for inventing the Waffle Dog. ;-)

A commenter pointed out that there is a previous recipe for waffle dogs, but it’s much more complicated, involving pancake mix and a waffle iron.

The Influence Star Wars Has Had On Movies And TV Shows

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Star Wars is one of the most beloved and highest earning franchises in science fiction history, with fans who have grown up watching the series and a slew of new fans who are due to jump on board the Star Wars express when Episode VII comes out.

But a franchise is not judged by its fanbase alone, and Star Wars is not only garnering new fans nearly forty years after the first movie came out- it’s still influencing other sci-fi projects to this day.

Shutterstock created this delightfully minimalist chart to show some of the ways Star Wars has influenced the genre, from the droids and gadgets to the fact that without a Chewbacca we may not have ever met a Groot

Designer Lines His Wedding Jacket with All the Texts He and His Wife Sent Each Other While Dating

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Nick Reeve, a graphic designer, got married in May. He met, Jen, his wife, 3 years ago. They've spent a lot of time sending text messages back and forth. In reflection of their long courtship, Reeve decided to weave their online conversations into his wedding jacket. He typeset all of their messages into 9 point font with special selected moments in larger text. These were printed on silk forming the lining, which was then sewn into the suit. Gamma Noodles - A Star And Spangled Soup Bowl

Gamma Noodles by Biticol

Cap got all suited up and went to grab his shield when he noticed it wasn't hanging on the wall where it belongs. "Who in the world would dare steal Captain America's shield?" he thought, referring to himself in the third person as always. He was set to wake the rest of the Avengers when he heard a slurping sound coming from downstairs, a sound that made Cap think that fiend Venom had snuck into the building again. But as he walked into the kitchen he saw the big, green Hulk who had snagged his shield to use it as a bowl for ramen...

The Real Housewives of Ancient Egypt Had 8-Foot-Long Prenups

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 02:00 PM PDT

A 2,480-year-old scroll, now at Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, is a beautiful artifact of an ancient time. Is it a religious text? A government edict? No, this scroll is a legal contract, delineating what compensation would be paid in case a particular marriage didn’t work out. In other words, it’s a prenup. Egyptologist Dr. Emily Teeter explains,

"Most people have no idea that women in ancient Egypt had the same legal rights as men," says Teeter. Egyptian women, no matter their marital status, could enter into contracts, sue and be sued, and serve on juries and as witnesses. They could acquire and own property (and fairly often, they did: a fragment of papyrus from 1147 B.C, denoting thousands of land holdings names women as the owners of about 10 percent of the properties listed).

This particular prenup awarded the woman silver pieces and bags of grain for life if the marriage fell apart. It’s not the only ancient Egyptian pre-nup that survives, nor is Egypt the only land that did this. Read more about ancient marriage contracts that were enshrined in legal documents at Atlas Obscura.

The World's Best Ned Flanders-Themed Metal Band

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 01:01 PM PDT

With all the grittiness and depth of the original source comes Okilly Dokilly, a metal band inspired by Ned Flanders from The Simpsons. The name comes from Flanders's trademark catchphrase. The band, which is based in Phoenix, consists of vocalist Head Ned with Red Ned on the synthesizer, Thread Ned on the bass, Stead Ned on the guitar, and Bled Ned on the drums. You can listen to 4 of their songs here, all of which tap into the Ned Flanders within all of us. Just be careful, neighbor-enoo, or you may find yourself unable to contain the emotions they release.

Watch An Eagle Take Out A Drone In Midair

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 01:00 PM PDT

photo eagle_drone.0_zpsex98nyko.gif

We may not have enough drone regulations in place here in the U.S., but it appears air traffic over Australia is now being regulated by animal kingdom royalty.

(YouTube Link)

This brief but eventful video was shot by Melbourne Aerial Video, who wants to assure everyone that the eagle wasn’t harmed in the making of this video:

"Eagle was fine — she was massive, and used talon's to 'punch' the drone out of the sky. Hung around overhead so I got a really good look," the video's description states. "Eagle's health was my main concern also."

And they have these wise words for future drone pilots:

"Do not fly drones near birds of prey, they clearly attack seeing you as a threat or the right sized dinner. This will cost you money and potentially harm to the bird. This one was fine ... the drone needed some attention before it could fly again."

One of the most fun articles celebrating the date was posted over on Flavorwire, where they shared some of the coolest business cards inspired by books.

Whether you're a librarian, writer, English teacher or just a fan of good literature, there are a whole lot of business cards to love in their list.

Photographic Duo Shares Their Unique View Of The Middle East

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 10:00 AM PDT

It’s easy to assume that all photographers in the Middle East would focus on documentary photography and wouldn’t care to shoot artistic or editorial pics, since there is always so much media attention on the region.

But there are many artists out there who are creating moments instead of simply capturing them, creators who share their vision with the world via image based social media sites like Instagram.

Christto & Andrew are two of these artistic minded fellows doing their thang in Doha, and the duo came to the region because they felt living in Doha, the capital city of the State of Qatar, would inspire their creativity.

Their images seamlessly blend surreal elements with social commentary, presenting their unique view of the Middle East as two outsiders seeing the region through alien eyes.

That Takes a Lot of Balls

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 09:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

A truckload of 20,000 black plastic balls were released into the Los Angeles reservoir this week. That’s the last shipment of a total of 96 million balls now floating on the water. It’s a $34.5 million project designed to protect the city’s precious water supply.

The black, plastic shade balls — costing 36 cents each — protect the water in the 175-acre reservoir against dust and rain, birds and wildlife, and chemical reactions caused by the sun. It is also expected to keep about 300 million gallons of water from evaporating each year.

L.A. has been doing this for years in smaller reservoirs, but they've never had this many balls before. Let’s hope it works, as California is in the midst of an epic drought. If it doesn’t, they’ll have no water and the world’s largest ball pit to play in. -via Time

Men in Black Safety Defenders

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 07:00 AM PDT

You surely remember Air New Zealand’s Hobbit-themed flight safety video. That was introduced less than a year ago, and now they’ve gone and made a new one that’s completely different and just as awesome, in collaboration with Sony Pictures.

(YouTube link)

The song is a parody of “Men in Black” by Will Smith, but for New Zealanders, the real highlight is the appearance of their national rugby team the All Blacks. You’ll also see actor Rip Torn, Kiwi musician Stan Walker, international rugby stars David Campese, Martin Johnson, and Agustin Pichot, and a special appearance by Frank the Pug. When you’ve heard all the safety rules, don’t let them use that "flashy thing" to erase your memory!

These Tea Dragons Are Hoarding Tasty Leaves

Posted: 13 Aug 2015 06:00 AM PDT

If you drink tea, you know how delicious the different brews can be -and how unique one flavor profile is from another. That's why these amazing tea dragon illustrations by New Zealand artist Strangely Katie so perfectly capture the spirit of different tea varieties.

As a tea drinker, it may seem strange to see your favorite brews portrayed as dragons, but when you look at the pictures, you'll likely notice just how strangely accurate the artist's depictions of each blend really are. Oolong should be a wise, mellow friend and Jasmine is refined, beautiful and serene.
