Mother and Daughter Reunited 71 Years after Being Separated by the Nazis

Posted: 15 Aug 2015 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo of the mother and daughter by the International Tracing Service)

Margot Bachmann was born on October 24, 1944 in Heidelberg, Germany. Her mother, an Italian woman, was a forced laborer in that city. A German soldier impregnated her. When she was born, Bachmann was taken away. She never saw her mother.

The soldier’s family raised her while the mother vanished into the chaos of the end of World War II. Bachmann asked the International Tracing Service to try to find her mother—if she was even alive. The organization was successful. They found the 91-year old unnamed mother in her hometown of Noverella, Italy. Bachmann sent her a letter, which is excerpted here:

Dear Mum, my name is Margot Bachmann and I am your daughter, born on Oct 25 1944 in Heidelberg. All my life I asked my family about you, without being given any answers. I want to come and find you so that I can hug you once again. I’m immensely happy to be able to finally know you.

The two met in Noverella on August 8. Pictured above is a photo album that Bachmann made for her mother.

13 Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of Movie and TV Extras

Posted: 15 Aug 2015 02:00 AM PDT

People who make up the street scenes, parties, and general backgrounds crowds of TV shows and movies can’t tell us too much about the particular shows they work on, because producers don’t want spoilers or workplace gossip. But they can tell us about their jobs in general. Like many Hollywood jobs, it’s not glamorous at all, but hey, it’s showbiz! Meanwhile, they go through some weird stuff to make a coherent show for the audience. For example:

3. WHAT LOOKS LIKE BOOZE ON CAMERA ISN'T ACTUALLY ALCOHOL.

While posing as party-goers in bar scenes, extras need something to fill their cups. But film sets are no place for drunk actors, so the props team uses a number of tricks to fool the camera, some less appetizing than others. Apple juice is a good substitute for beer, according to Beaudreault: “Or it’ll be seltzer with a little food coloring in it. There will be bottles that have been cleaned out and their labels removed and fake labels put on.”

“Vinegar is sometimes used to approximate the texture and viscosity of booze,” Rogers says. “You’ll stand there with a glass of vinegar for eight hours.” And because filming can be a long and mind-numbingly repetitive process, nobody has time to replace melting ice cubes, so they’ll use gelatin ice cubes. Or, for the ultimate cheat, plastic wrap can be put in a cup filled with water to resemble crushed ice, according to Gale Nemec, who teaches a workshop for background actors. (This approach also apparently makes for festive centerpieces.)

It’s a real job to look “natural” while drinking vinegar with gelatin in it. But that’s only one thing. Read the rest of the list of tidbits about being an extra at mental_floss.

Dying Dog Gets One Last Chance to Play in the Snow

Posted: 15 Aug 2015 12:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Peter Byrne/PA Wire/AP)

Sophia was a 6-year old St. Bernard with terminal cancer. She loved to play in the snow. But her final day came in the middle of summer. Her human, Alyson Page, nonetheless found a way to give her a last experience with snow hours before she was put to sleep.

Page took Sophia to the Chill Factore, an indoor snow skiing facility in Manchester, UK. The Manchester Evening News quotes Page:

"She absolutely loves the snow, so I sent an email cheekily on the off-chance, I never expected them to be so kind to let us come and bring her.

"We got a reply yesterday and it was just before we were due to have her put to sleep, so it was just amazing.

"She has not really shown any interest in anything for a couple of weeks now, so just to see her with a waggy tail and diving around in the snow has just been amazing. It's been a wonderful end for her."

Lemmy Has Switched From Whiskey To Vodka...For His Health

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Take it from Lemmy, lead singer of Motörhead- clear liquors like vodka are better for your body than the browns like whiskey.

Lemmy has been living a true rock & roll lifestyle for fifty years, living as hard as his lyrics claim, but recent health issues have forced him to leave his beloved whiskey and Coke by the wayside.

Due to gastric distress and dehydration Lemmy must now live the rest of his wild life drinking Screwdrivers instead of Jack & Coke. Lemmy had this to say about the switch “I like orange juice better, so Coca-Cola can f%*k off!”

Man Uses Custom Prosthetics in His Quest to Live as a Goat

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Tom Bowditch)

He's living the dream, I tell you. None of us have come as close to the full goat lifestyle. But there he is, beside his caprine brothers and sisters, eating grass on a steep hillside.

Thomas Thwaites is an artist in London. In the past, he attempted to build a toaster from scratch. That's no small effort, since his starting point was personally mining and smelting the iron.

As you might expect, this project inevitably led him to attempt to live as a goat. He explained to the Daily Mail that this animal-inspired lifestyle could offer people an alternative to a future of cybernetics:

Thwaites, who is interested in transhumanism, believes not everyone will want to become a cyborg in the future.

Biorobotics, he told Motherboad, could be used by people to de-volve instead of evolve.

‘I initially wanted to be an elephant, but it wasn’t going very well,’ said Thwaites. ‘I visited a shaman, and she said “you’re an idiot”. So, I decided to be a goat.’

Thwaites worked with a zoologist to develop the custom prothetic limbs. He's now attempting to cross the Alps with a particular herd of goats.

The History of Hamburgers in America

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 08:00 PM PDT

What’s more American than a hamburger? Maybe apple pie, which we’ll have after our hamburger. But the American hamburger is a symbol of the States all over the world. It wasn’t always so.

It’s easy to guess the hamburger’s geographic origin; after all, it’s right there in the name. But the original version of the now-iconic dish looked almost nothing like what’s served at drive-thrus across America.

Motz says the Hamburg steak plate was one of the most popular dishes in its native city, a major port that hosted many German immigrants on their way to the States. Consisting of “chopped beef that was turned into a patty and then, of course, pan-fried,” the dish was rounded out with onions, potatoes, and gravy, making it a cheap and easy meal for would-be Americans stuck in immigration limbo, sometimes for months.

It’s these immigrants who brought the Hamburg steak across the Atlantic, setting up carts in lower Manhattan that catered to new arrivals in search of comfort food. The vendors preserved the steak plate in its original form—an actual plate of food, served with a fork. Authentic, but as Motz notes, “not very portable at all.”

It was Americans who turned it into a sandwich, and even then there were ups and downs for the burger. Read the whole history of the hamburger at First We Feast.

LeBron James Will Pay for College for 1,000 Kids

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 07:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Basket Streaming)

He’s made a fortune by making his professional dreams come true. Now he’s helping a thousand other people do the same. Basketball star LeBron James announced that his charitable foundation will fund full tuition scholarships for 1,000 students in Akron Public Schools to attend the University of Akron in Ohio. The Cleveland Plain Dealer quotes James:

"It means so much because, as a kid growing up in the inner city and a lot of African-American kids, you don't really think past high school," James later told reporters. "You don't really know your future. You hear high school all the time, and you graduate high school and then you never think past that because either it's not possible or your family's not financially stable to even be able to support a kid going to college."

James likened himself to the children who will be eligible for these scholarships -- a poor child of a single parent who didn't have the money to go to college. But the 6-8, 250-pound superstar had the NBA and millions of dollars waiting for him.

Five years ago, the James foundation switched its focus to mentoring and tutoring poor, at-risk youths who are in danger of failing out of school because of problems learning, with attendance, or in their homes. This partnership with the university could play a key role in helping James reach his goal of raising the city's graduation rate.

Aspirations

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

I once asked my daughter what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she replied, “A fish!” That later changed to a waitress, a zookeeper, and now that she’s almost an adult, a nurse. Really, instead of asking what kids want to be, we should ask them what they want to do when they grow up. We are not totally defined by our jobs. This is the latest from John McNamee at Pie Comic.

Hollywood Reboots That Will Probably Come Out Someday

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Hollywood reboots should be added to the list of inevitable things alongside taxes and death, and the fact that most reboots are awful doesn’t stop the entertainment industry from rolling ‘em out by the barrelful.

So what kind of reboots should we expect to see in the near future? Well, as soon as Hollywood has finished making movies about board games they'll probably set their sights on more TV shows ripe for the rebooting.

And then we'll get to see the TV show based on the movie which was based on the TV show...

Cracked has seen the future of Hollywood reboots and it looks darker than the future SkyNet created, so take a peek at the movie posters from the reboot future but don't say I didn't warn you!

A Group of Architects Want to Build a Real-life Minas Tirith

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 02:00 PM PDT

A group of British architects have set their sights on a lofty goal: a full-scale replica of the fortified settlement called Minas Tirith, featured heavily in the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The cost of such a venture is estimated at $2.9 billion dollars.

The eventual goal would be to build 625 homes within Minas Tirith that would range from 2 star homes that would run about $625,000 to 4 star luxury homes that would cost up to $2.7 million.

If the financial goal is met, construction would be slated to begin in 2016 and finish in 2023.   The architects are eyeing two locations in Southern England for the project.

Where will they get the money? Crowdfunding! So far, they’ve raised $3600. There are 48 days left in the fundraising campaign, so they may reach the goal. And monkeys might fly out of my butt. Read more about the Minas Tirith project at Worthly.

Explaining Global Economic Systems With Two Cows

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Understanding the differences between various economic and political systems can be quite difficult, or it can all be explained with a little help from two cows.

Newstalk ZB came up with some fun new versions of the old "You have two cows" satirical bit that makes it so easy to understand things like modern corporate economics that even a moo-ron can figure it out!

Of course, this Ecownomic method is merely meant to steer us in the right direction in a no bull kinda way, so it doesn’t really dig in to the meat and potatoes of each system.

But it's so universal that it can even be used to explain something as esoteric as Surrealism:

That explanation is easier to digest than a steak dinner and a glass of milk!

Enjoy The Violence by Mdk7

Miami in the 1980s- a hotbed of criminal conspiracies, corruption and murder. The streets ran red with blood, and the violent crime hotlines rang off the hook. There was one nut in particular who had both the citizens and the criminals running in fear, some kook who wore a bunch of different animal masks and was seemingly born to kill. That crazy killer became a hot commodity in the Miami scene, but soon even those who hired him began to fear for their lives...

Inside the Brains of Happily Married Couples

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 11:00 AM PDT

People who’ve been married to the same person for decades must have some sort of secret, right? Ask them, and you’ll get all kinds of good advice, but often those who are happily married can’t pinpoint the exact psychological process of marital success. Science can help.

As a society, we place a huge amount of emphasis on being there for each other when we’re in need, but past research has actually shown that relationship satisfaction is influenced as much, if not more, by how we react to each other’s good news. Whereas emotional support from a partner when we’re down can have the unfortunate side-effect of making us feel indebted and more aware of our negative emotions, a partner’s positive reaction to our good news can magnify the benefits of that good fortune and make us feel closer to them.

Where did this idea come from? An experiment by the Rotman Research Institute and the University of Toronto measured brain activity in women who have been married to the same person an average of 40 years, while watching their husband’s emotional reactions. Read about the experiment and some preliminary findings at New York magazine. Now we can wait for the same experiment to be performed on men. -via Digg

Amazing 3D Artwork That Looks So Real It's Scary

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Art that gives the illusion of being 3D isn’t quite as effective when viewed on paper in person, but when you view it on a computer monitor the results are rather intriguing.

Many artists try to create 3D artwork by tracing a photograph of the subject using digital editing software, but German artist Stefan Pabst creates his mind melting 3D masterpieces the old fashioned way.

Stefan's works are so incredible that people are constantly asking him to prove their authenticity, so he created his own YouTube channel that shows him in action so you will believe your eyes.

Tarzan is Elsa’s Brother?

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 09:00 AM PDT

What do Edgar Rice Burroughs and Hans Christian Andersen have in common? They both wrote classic stories that were made into Disney animated films. And now they’ve been linked even further, with a theory that Tarzan is Anna and Elsa’s younger brother they never knew. Chris Buck, who co-directed both Tarzan and Frozen, told MTV News:

“When you’re working on a feature, you have a lot of time to think about stuff because it takes four years to make one,” Buck, who’s read all of your fan theories, told MTV News at a special screening of the Walt Disney Animation Studios Shorts Collection on Sunday (August 9). “I think Jen [Lee] and I were walking to a meeting, and I just start to tell her the entire story.”

“I said, ’Of course Anna and Elsa’s parents didn’t die,'” he added. “Yes, there was a shipwreck, but they were at sea a little bit longer than we think they were because the mother was pregnant, and she gave birth on the boat, to a little boy. They get shipwrecked, and somehow they really washed way far away from the Scandinavian waters, and they end up in the jungle. They end up building a tree house and a leopard kills them, so their baby boy is raised by gorillas. So in my little head, Anna and Elsa’s brother is Tarzan — but on the other side of that island are surfing penguins, to tie in a non-Disney movie, ’Surf’s Up.’ That’s my fun little world.”

The connection was also mentioned in a reddit AMA last year. Never mind that the original Tarzan was identified as the child of Lord and Lady Greystoke of England. This is the Disney movie universe we’re talking about! -via Buzzfeed

Famous Songs With Misunderstood Meanings

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 08:00 AM PDT

We sing the lyrics to our favorite songs whenever those songs come on, and might even bust out a shaky rendition of those songs when we’re in a karaoke kind of mood, but do we really know what the singer is actually saying?

(YouTube Link)

Most people would say yes without hesitation, but song lyrics aren’t always so easy to decipher, and songs with simpler lyrics can often be the most deceptive.

Take Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The U.S.A. for example- it has been called one of the most patriotic songs ever written, and is played whenever Americans are feeling that homeland pride.

(YouTube Link)

But Bruce’s lyrics are actually referring to America's mistreatment of Vietnam veterans when they came home from the war, as revealed by Neatorama’s favorite guest author Eddie Deezen a few years back.

So now you should only sing “Born In The U.S.A.” on the Fourth of July if you’re doing so ironically!

Yarn Made from Skin and Bones

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 07:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Philipp Stössel)

Researchers at ETH University in Switzerland developed a useful, weavable fiber from the waste products of slaughterhouses. Philipp Stössel, a doctoral candidate and the lead reseacher, says that collagen recovered from animals can be turned into a gelatin which can be spun into fiber. Design Indaba reports:

The gelatine rendered from the skin, bones and tendons is heated to create protein precipitation. The precipitants are coated with ethanol to harden them, spun into yarn, treated with a resin to bond them fibres together and impregnanted with a natural wool lanonlin to keep them supple.

Stössel knitted a glove from the yarn he made from the gelatine, and notices that the gelatine fibres were smoother than natural wool fibres, giving the gelatine fibres an attractive sheen. They fibres were also full of tiny hollows, which lend them the ability to insulate well. The only advantage the natural sheep’s wool fibre has is its water-resistance, but Stössel is working on ways of improving this.

10 TV Shows That Were Cancelled After Only One Episode

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 06:00 AM PDT

TV shows cancelled after one season generally fall victim to low ratings, which could be due to a lack of advertising or a lack of storyline, but when a show is cancelled after one episode it’s probably for the best.

Because when a pilot episode crashes and burns it saves the viewing audience from being taken on a trip to the bad side of Television Town, where the Hitlers and the Osbournes live.

ScreenRant has compiled a list of 10 TV Shows Cancelled After One Episode, which is all you need to see to know these shows were doomed before they made it on the air.

Urine Analysis

Posted: 14 Aug 2015 05:00 AM PDT

A few things about pee from the new book Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Attack of the Factoids

When ancient Greek physicians discovered that urine is sterile, they began using it as an antiseptic on wounds. It worked so well that the Romans later used concentrated urine as a toothpaste and dental rinse.

All the human urine produced worldwide in one day would take about 2 ½ hours to flow over Niagara Falls.

Human urine is 98 percent water and 2 percent sodium, calcium, urea, phosphates, and ammonium.

When General George S. Patton reached Germany’s Rhine River during World War II, he showed his contempt for the country by peeing in the water.

The male strawberry poison dart frog keeps its mate hydrated and warm by peeing on them.

The 16th-century insult pissant comes from “piss ants,” a large wood ant, so called because its anthills smelled like urine.

Researchers in Singapore have created a battery powered by urine. It’s about the size of a credit card, and a drop of urine produces 1.5 volts for 90 minutes.

Tiger pee supposedly smells a lot like buttered popcorn.

Only 20 percent of people admit to having peed in a public swimming pool, but 93 percent of surfers admit to having peed in their wetsuits at least once.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed a building for Florida Southern University, which he allowed students to help build for a break on tuition. He also let the students help age its copper into a nice green patina by having them pour their urine over it.

In French, dandelions are called pissenlit, which means “pee in bed.”

Alkaptonuria is a rare genetic disorder that causes urine to turn black.

The biggest draw at the Harlekin Toilet Museum of Modern Arse (yes, that’s the real name) in Wiesbaden, Germany, is a urinal with Adolf Hitler’s face painted inside the bowl.
