Officially Licensed DC Comics Superhero Cafes

Posted: 19 Aug 2015 04:00 AM PDT

There are two locations in Malaysia and a new one opening soon in Singapore. JT Network, the company which owns them, already operates DC Comics shops in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Malaysia. Now they're adding food service with dishes inspired by Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The Bat Burger is wagyu beef with a black bun and a cheesy Batman symbol. You can view more photos of the cafe's foods at Comic Book Resources.

In Mansfield, Ohio See Tom Cruise as Jesus and Other Biblical Oddities

Posted: 19 Aug 2015 03:00 AM PDT

Prince Charles as Abel, brother of Cain

Mansfield, Ohio is home to the state's only life-size wax museum. But it's not the typical kind of wax museum one might imagine. It's called BibleWalk, and it bills itself as the "Living Bible Museum." Since it opened in 1983, the museum has received approximately 40,000 visitors a year who come to experience its wax figures posed in dioramas illustrating the stories of the bible.

But visitors might get a sense of familiarity as they pass through BibleWalk, and it's not because they've previously read the bible. It's more likely because many of the over 300 figures in the museum are castoffs from other wax museums and were originally made to resemble celebrities and other public figures. Visitors to BibleWalk can find Tom Cruise dressed and posed as Jesus and Elizabeth Taylor, John Travolta, Steve McQueen and other celebrities as various biblical figures.

Read more on this story and see additional photos of the odd wax figures at BibleWalk here.

17 Graphs Introverts Will Totally Understand

Posted: 19 Aug 2015 02:00 AM PDT

Today, I was at a large workplace lunch. It required great concentration because I had to pretend to be normal for over an hour. I think that I did reasonably well. At one point, my boss insisted that I engage in interpersonal communication in this professional setting. Thankfully, I am always prepared to talk about anime.

That's one of the challenges of being introverted in an extraverted world. Anna Borges of BuzzFeed understands. She's doodled 17 graphs that illustrate the introverted experience.

Baby Grow Strong - Do You Even Lift, Rocket?

Posted: 19 Aug 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Baby Grow Strong by NibiruHybrid

If you've ever wondered how Groot grew so big and strong you should know that it didn't come naturally to him, or else he would have been too buff to dance as a baby. He had to exercise, lift weights and generally keep his trunk slim and trim to become the Guardian he is today. There aren't a lot of beings like Groot in the galaxy, but every alien race I've ever encountered had the same physical philosophy in mind- work hard and you can become a mighty marvel, or sit around like a bloated stump and you'll never go anywhere in life!

Add some alien motivation to your life with this Baby Grow Strong t-shirt by NibiruHybrid, it's one fun way to go green!

Make Your Own Emoji Mosaic

Posted: 19 Aug 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Emoji Mosaic by Eric Andrew Lewis is a web tool that reconstructs images using emojis, the new, more colorful emoticons. Just upload a picture, and wait for it to render. THe resulting collage is much bigger than what you see here. You might not see each individual emoji, but if you have favorites, they may stand out. Surely you recognize Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” above. I wanted to see how well it worked, so I uploaded a picture of John Farrier.

Deliciously Dapper Food Bow Ties

Posted: 19 Aug 2015 12:00 AM PDT

It's a bow tie bow tie. Get it? A bow tie shaped like bow tie pasta!

This is my favorite among Rommy Debommy's funny food ties, which also include a waffle, French fries with ketchup, and marshmallow candy. Rommy makes each one by hand from her studio in Rotterdam.

I hope that they're clip-on ties because it's hard to tie pasta when it's wet and slippery.

Nine Star Wars Toys That Were Cancelled Before Anyone Could Buy Them

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Chewbacca's fam disappeared soon after manufacture | Image source

November 17, 1978 is an infamous day in Star Wars fan history. That evening, broadcast in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand was "Star Wars Holiday Special," a highly inadvisable TV movie that was one of the first ever Star Wars spinoffs.

In what Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) describes as "The horrible holiday special that nobody talks about," the regular cast was featured, with a few additions: Boba Fett was introduced, as was Chewbacca's family. Chewie's fam, shown above, were his father Itchy, his wife Malla and his son Lumpy (names that were said to be shortened from the originals Attichitcuk, Mallatobuck, and Lumpawaroo, respectively).

If it sounds bad, it truly was and it's no wonder that among the creators and cast of the Star Wars film franchise, it's the Special That Shall Not Be Named. Prior to the show being aired, Kenner had Chewbacca's family action figures at the ready. Once the Holiday Special was shown, the family went into permanent hiding.

This Restaurant Is Less Than 8 Feet Wide

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 10:00 PM PDT

32 years ago, architect Ernesto Bedmar bought an alley in Córdoba, Argentina. It seemed like it was hardly big enough to build anything substantial, but Bedmar erected a pleasant loft. After many years, it began to deteriorate, so he looked for a new purpose.

After reconstruction, the space reopened as El Papagayo, a restaurant measuring less than 8 feet wide and 105 feet long. A glass ceiling provides a lot of natural light into the building. There's a full kitchen, a private dining room, an upstairs office, and plumbing facilities inside. You can see more photos at Arch Daily.

Italians have made expressing themselves through hand gestures into an art form, with dozens of different gestures in their arsenal for every kind of occasion.

There’s the angry variety, the gestures used to woo the opposite sex, and the rapid hand movements that look angry but are meant to convey that the gesturer is overjoyed.

Animated Woodblock Ukiyo-e Prints

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 08:00 PM PDT

The Japanese artist Hokusai (1760-1849) swept Japan and, long after his death, the world, with his precise, vibrant woodblock prints. Images such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa almost seem to move. And now they really do, thanks to a bit of digital editing by a modern artist known as Segawa Thirty-Seven. He turned 5 famous works by Hokusai into funny animated .gifs, such as the above Tea House at Koishikawa. You can view the rest at Design Boom.

The Petrifying Well of Knaresborough

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 07:00 PM PDT

There is a natural well with a waterfall in North Yorkshire, near Knaresborough in the UK, that was once considered cursed by the devil. Objects that came in contact with the water turned to stone! Of course, no one wanted to touch the water, lest they be turned to stone, too. Although there were plenty of supernatural legends associated with the well and nearby Mother Shipton’s Cave, the part about turning to stone was true. Not people, obviously, but anything left in the water stream for some time became petrified. More adventurous people began hanging objects at the fountain deliberately.

Eventually, scientific analysis of the water revealed the magic behind the petrification process. The water has high mineral content that precipitates over objects creating a hard shell of mineral over it in much the same way as stalactites and stalagmites form in a cave. What’s amazing, however, is the speed at which petrification occurred. Rather than centuries, small toys like teddy bears can petrify in just three to five months. Teddy bears are popular because they are porous which allows water to soak in and petrify the toy inside out. Other have left personal items such as rings and clothing, kitchen utensils, and even a bicycle.

King Charles I sold the well to a private owner in 1630, who opened it as a tourist attraction and charged for guided tours. Almost 400 years later, it’s still operated as a tourist attraction, part of Mother Shipton’s Park. Read the legend behind the park and see more pictures of the Petrifying Well at Amusing Planet. Yes, even the bicycle. -via Ralph Roberts

The Diner Where the Waitresses Are Paid to Be Rude

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Cherry has to treat you this way. But she enjoys it, too. How could she not like insulting doofuses like you who apparently can't read a menu or make a decision to save your life?

Welcome to Ed Debevic's, a diner in Chicago. The waiters are specially trained to be rude--although they may also have a lot of natural talent, too. In Cherry's case, she's actually a character developed by a woman named Kryssie. Be sure to leave her a good tip if she's particularly ill-mannered with you. You inspire the best in her, but it's still hard work.

Dads React to Their Daughters Getting Catcalled

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 05:00 PM PDT

Women don’t get catcalled when a man is walking with them, so many men are completely unaware of what happens when a woman walks alone. The Scene set up a camera to record instances of catcalling, and then showed the footage to the women’s fathers to show them what happens when a woman walks on a city street. It’s an eye-opening experience. Contains NSFW language and text.

The third man, who is older, takes some time to realize the intent behind the compliments, but when he does, it upsets him. No man wants their loved ones to experience this. At the same time, it’s sad that it takes a personal experience to drive the point home, because women who aren’t your loved ones are treated this way as well. -via Buzzfeed

A Mighty Outrageous Gallery Of Mugshots

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Only the most foolish felons like the look of their mugshots, and that’s because getting arrested should be one of the worst days of your life.

Those who end up posing for multiple mugshots can use them to track their descent into darkness, just imagine what this feral fellow used to look like before he got his face tattooed and tongue split

It's funny how much you can tell about a perp by their mugshot, and sometimes their crimes are literally written all over their face. Can you guess what this Joker got popped for?

No, not for a gas attack or Robinicide, but if you guessed drunk driving you clearly know your clown-based crimes! Maybe he was trying out for the reboot of Shakes The Clown?

What A Day That Was! - One Super Square Buffet

What A Day That Was! by Banzai Designs

Zoidberg was tired of being kicked around, going hungry and feeling underappreciated, so he decided to trade his real life in for a virtual one. He chose life in the Mushroom Kingdom because it sounded tasty, and when he discovered he would be playing the part of a plumber named Mario he thought "Super, all the free toilet sandwiches I can eat!" But the Mushroom Kingdom was far different than New New York, and even though many things looked edible they were not, especially those angry shroom headed Goombas and their tasty looking turtle bros...

The Tunguska Event Explained

It was the largest explosion ever recorded up to that point. No one went near it for twenty years, partially because there were no roads going to the middle of Siberia where the explosion originated. Dylan Thuras explains the Tunguska event of 1908, or what we know about it, anyway. This is another episode of the 100 Wonders series from Atlas Obscura.

Car and Driver Stereotypes

Dude Perfect (previously at Neatorama) and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. illustrate some very common car and driver stereotypes.

These aren’t universal, but you know some people who fit into these categories. And many of us have a tendency toward one or more of them. I have to admit, I always do the Mom Arm, and I’m starting to turn into the Inspector Dad. The one that’s universal, as far as I know, is the Black Hole. I would like to say that no vehicles were harmed in the making of this video, but apparently they were. Badly. -via Viral Viral Videos

Paralyzed Rabbit Gets a Wheelchair

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 12:00 PM PDT

The vet told Melanie James that she should just have Bertha put to sleep. But James had other ideas. She modified a dog's wheelchair to fit her bunny, who has been struggling to get around after a hip injury. James tells the Daily Telegraph that Bertha is putting the chair to good use:

"She sits in it maybe for a couple of hours and then she has a rest."

The device hooks onto the bunny’s back and allows her to roam freely around her home at the Ani-Mel charity in Bank Mill, Cumbria.

Her devoted owner also gives Bertha daily baths, physiotherapy, antibiotic injections and plenty of movement to aid her recovery, with the hope that soon Bertha may be able to walk again soon.

This Bridge is Rebuilt by Hand Every Year

The Q'eswachaka Bridge spans the Apurimac River Canyon in Peru, and links two communities. Every year, the communities come together to replace last year’s rope bridge with a new one made of strong, new grass. They’ve done this for hundreds of years, from the time of the Inka, with the process handed down through generations. Watch how they do it.

Mad Muppets

Sesame Street lasted a long time. It even survived the collapse of civilization. But it was a very different place. Come and play. Everything's A-OK. Friendly neighbors there. That's where we meet. Just keep singing that song. Pretend that nothing has changed and you'll feel a lot better. Try to not make eye contact with the new residents, though.

Jenn of EPBOT recently attended the Tampa Bay Comic-Con. These three road warriors did, too. You can see more photos of them and other cosplayers here.

Everything You've Heard About Chastity Belts Is a Lie

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 07:00 AM PDT

You’ve heard of medieval nobles going off to the Crusades and leaving their wives in chastity belts. After all, they’d be gone for years. Or they’d lock up their daughters, so to speak, to preserve their virtue for an arranged marriage. Everyone knows about them. But things that everyone knows aren’t always necessarily so. Albrecht Classen wrote a book to dispel the myths about chastity belts.

"As a medievalist, one day I thought: I cannot stand this anymore," says Albrecht Classen, a professor in the University of Arizona's German Studies department. He set out to reveal the true history of chastity belts. "It's a concise enough research topic that I could cover everything that was ever written about it," he says, "and in one swoop destroy this myth."

Here is the truth: Chastity belts, made of metal and used to ensure female fidelity, never really existed.

So where did the historical references, the museum displays, the art, and the “common knowledge” we’ve heard come from? From fantasy. After all, we have the same evidence of unicorns. The historical evidence of chastity belts is presented and explained at Atlas Obscura.

The Story Behind "Sweet Home Alabama"

Posted: 18 Aug 2015 06:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Jon Callas)

For far too long, I lived away from South. When I would return to my parents' home in the paradise of Alabama, I would hear the song "Sweet Home Alabama"--if not on the radio, then in my soul.

42 years ago, the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd released its iconic tribute to the heart of the Deep South. C.J. Lotz of Garden & Gun magazine interviewed Gary Rossington, one of the founders of the band and composers of the song:

What was the process like to write “Sweet Home Alabama”?

I had this little riff. It’s the little picking part and I kept playing it over and over when we were waiting on everyone to arrive for rehearsal. Ronnie and I were sitting there, and he kept saying, play that again. Then Ronnie wrote the lyrics and Ed [King] and I wrote the music.

The lyrics were a response to a Neil Young song, right?

Everyone thought it was about Neil Young, but it was more about Alabama. We had toured there, going all around playing clubs and National Guard armories. Everyone was real nice. When we were out in the country driving all the time, we would listen to the radio. Neil Young had “Southern Man,” and it was kind of cutting the South down. And so Ronnie just said, We need to show people how the real Alabama is.

We loved Neil Young and all the music he’s given the world. We still love him today. It wasn’t cutting him down, it was cutting the song he wrote about the South down. Ronnie painted a picture everyone liked. Because no matter where you’re from, sweet home Alabama or sweet home Florida or sweet home Arkansas, you can relate. […]

What’s the best thing about being Southern?

I love being Southern because of the people and the fans we have. People down here are more friendly—really warm people. We travel all over the world and it seems like the South is the place where the people are nicest and they think of the fellow man more.
