Physics 101 Force - Use The Math Anakin!

Posted: 09 Aug 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Physics 101 Force by Pigboom

Darth wasn't having trouble force choking people or using his powers to further the Empire's agenda, but he was having a crisis of faith because he no longer understood how and why it all worked. The Force was a mystery to him, virtually a form of magic, and in order to crush the Rebel scum beneath his heel he needed to understand why he had been chosen to serve as Sith Lord instead of, say, some bantha from Tatooine. So the Emperor took him back to school, teaching him the ABCs of assault, bashing and choking via the Force, but Vader found it hard to sit in class all day when he was the star of an intergalactic war...

Educate your fellow fans with this Physics 101 Force t-shirt by Pigboom, and they'll be happy you showed them the way to execute a proper force choke!

Gosha Washes Things

Posted: 09 Aug 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Gosha is a pet, but she’s also a typical raccoon. They wash things. That’s what they do. Gosha has her own tub, and plenty of toys she can wash in addition to her food, but she’s found other things to wash.

Pajamas Turn These Bull Terriers into Cuddle Kings

Posted: 09 Aug 2015 12:00 AM PDT

According to Jennifer McLean of Brisbane, Australia, her two English Staffordshire bull terriers named Darren and Phillip need their PJs to get into the sleepy mood. Once outfitted in their cottony sleep casual attire, "The Blueboys" as McLean calls them, get in the mood to cuddle themselves to sleep. McLean said,

"Whenever I dress them in their onesies, they immediately want to snuggle. Phillip has restless nights if I don't put his jammies on first. I think it's become a bit of a comfort thing for him."

Codex Gigas: Inside the Mysterious ‘Devil’s Bible’

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 10:00 PM PDT

The bible shown here is three feet tall and weighs 165 pounds. It’s made of the skins of 160 animals. The handwriting throughout the Codex Gigas is consistent, leading experts to believe it was hand written by a single 13th century Benedictine monk, including the illustrations. That feat would have taken 30 years, even if he worked every day. But this book is called the “Devil’s Bible” for a reason. Read about the Codex Gigas and the legend that grew up around the mysterious text at Urban Ghosts.

The Eternal Question

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 08:00 PM PDT

(Image: unknown)

From the earliest of ancient Greek philosophers and the first Indian mystics, humanity has searched for the answer to a question written into its collective psyche.

Until then, we must check our phones one more time--always one more time--cycling through Facebook, Twitter, and our favorite blogs until the internet is finished.

Blatant American Food Chain Knockoffs in Iran

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

A Pizza Hat restaurant in Iran | Image: Instagram/pizza.hat

Prior to the Iranian (Islamic) revolution of 1979, and under the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, Western influences were not frowned upon as they are in Iran today. The revolution changed the country and culture drastically in many ways. Out with the Western style clothing and makeup also went any American businesses, including food chains.

For example, McDonald's had a presence in Iran until the revolution. Now, Iran has Mash Donald's, complete with golden arches and an (Iranian?) clown that looks suspiciously like Ronald. That's not the only American fast-food knockoff in Iran. They have Pizza Hat, seen above, which not only serves pizzas but chicken wings and lasagna as well.

Read about more American food chain knockoffs of Iran in this article.

Believe it or not, the object in this photo is a clock. It's called the Mengenlehreur and can be found in Berlin. The yellow light at the top blinks, showing the seconds. The top row shows the hours. The bottom row shows the minutes.

This is 1 of 11 unusual clocks in public places rounded up by Atlas Obscura. They include a sandglass that takes a full year to flow and an animatronic clock in Dubai designed 900 years ago.

Me-Time for Parents

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 12:00 PM PDT

The work is done. The chores are done. The kids have finally stopped popping up out of bed. Every item on the to-do list is crossed off. I have to be up in 8 hours to get to work.

And then my wife looks at me with that seductive glance of exhaustion . . .

Anyway, back to work!

Edward Scissorhands’ Neighborhood, 25 Years Later

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Andrew Cremeans grew up in Tampa, Florida, in the neighborhood that was used as the setting of the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands. In the movie, the area seemed eerily fresh and suburban, with houses painted pastel colors and, eventually, custom topiary shrubbery in every yard. Twenty-five years later, Cremeans returned to the neighborhood to see how it had changed. And took pictures. He talked to Mashable about his project.

I couldn't believe how small of a section the neighborhood was used, it seemed so huge in the movie. It feels especially small when you are standing and looking down the street to the cul de sac the castle was on. It really just felt like any old Tampa neighborhood. I caught myself wondering many times if all these people know that their house was in the movie. If it were my house, I'd have a huge framed poster of my screenshot of the movie in my living room.

The trees that have grown up over a quarter-century make a huge difference. What I really want to know is how they managed to demolish that huge mountain in the background. See all of Cremeans’ photos paired with screenshots from the movie at imgur. -via mental_floss

I Roll Solo by DC Visual Arts

Some people like to roam around the galaxy in squads or units, but Han likes to roll solo. He's just a rebel that way, and he doesn't need people interfering with his smuggler lifestyle and trying to force him to be a good boy. He was born bad, and that's how he likes to live, free to flit about the galaxy without taking part in any Empire wars or becoming the star of some trooper law enforcement reality show...

Show off your individual sense of style with this I Roll Solo t-shirt by DC Visual Arts, it makes a bold statement about where your geeky allegiances lie!

Winnie the Kitten Gets Down to Uptown Funk

Winnie is a beautiful, long-haired polydactyl kitten who was one of six lucky fosters from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Virginia. Prior to being saved by the Welfare League, all six kittens were abandoned. Now that they've been taken in, forever homes look promising. Perhaps so promising that Winnie feels the need to get down to some Uptown Funk. Her moves are so sharp she'll be relaxing in permanent digs in no time. Via Laughing Squid

The Painted Elephants of India

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Charles Fréger, a French photographer, travels the world to reveal to his audiences great mysteries. In the past, we've seen his depictions of the Wild Men of Europe--costumed representations of a folklore stock character. In 2013, he attended and photographed an elephant festival in Jaipur, India. The Daliy Telegraph reports:

The elephants are decorated specially for the festival, their hides painted bright colours, ears adorned with dangling jewels, anklets decked with bells, and tusks decorated with gold and silver rings. Their mahouts dress up in brocade jackets and brightly coloured turbans.

For every other day of the year the elephants are working animals. Traditionally bred and trained for heavy forest work, nowadays they carry tourists up to the Amber Palace, a 12-mile round trip from Jaipur. They are dressed and painted for weddings and special ceremonies, and of course for the festival.

You can see more photos of the elephants at Lost at E Minor.

Harry Potter Translated from Chinese

Posted: 08 Aug 2015 06:00 AM PDT

In the spirit of Backstroke of the West, we have 84 screencaps of a Harry Potter movie with English subtitles translated from the Chinese-dubbed dialogue. Is it a machine translation, or just a weak effort? Does the person who subtitles DVDs even know English? Maybe they don’t know Chinese, either, because they all seem quite random. Then again, I'm just a melon. -via Pleated-Jeans
