On the Line: Will a Dallas-to-Houston Bullet Train Revolutionize Texas? by Eric Nicholson | Dianna Wray

On the Line: Will a Dallas-... No matter which way you cut it, Texas Central's high-speed rail line is an enormous undertaking requiring billions of dollars in funding to allow construction workers to reshape and repurpose 3,000 acres of land between Houston and Dallas. Texas Central officials say the high-speed rail line will be a reality in the next six years. It would be a revolutionary project. The question remains whether the high-speed rail line will unite people across the state or further exacerbate a growing divide in Texas between those who reside in the cities and those who live in the country. Will the Dallas-to-Houston line recast how people travel in Texas or will it create a cavernous breach with the bullet train snaking from city to city while rural outposts sink into further isolation? more >>

Taiwan On at Taipei Station Cafe by Kathryn DeBruler

Taiwan On at Taipei Station... Tucked into a nondescript strip mall in Plano, Taipei Station Cafe is the kind of place people who love food want to know about but have yet to discover. Not that it isn't popular — on weekends around lunchtime, Taipei is packed to the gills and the line stretches past the door. Eager customers chat in Mandarin or Taiwanese as they wait for a table. And there aren't many — 15 tables, give or take, occupy the rather unremarkable interior. Weekday evenings are slower but still brisk and seem dominated by regulars: people who converse with the owner and who order big bowls of spicy beef noodle soup without a second glance at the menu. more >>

The two businesses share a plan: create a welcoming coffee shop with a number of adorable, adoptable resident cats, supplied by local shelters. more >>

Knievel Soars Again in Propulsive New Doc Being Evel

Evel Knievel was a marvel, a thrill, a dream-along distraction — millions around the world have gotten off imagining what it would be like to power that Harley over a ramp and scrape against the floor of heaven. But to argue that this mean sumbitch somehow guided us? That our national character was salved by the way this mine-town hothead dared to look death in the eye — and make a buck off it? That's as world-class foolhardy as Knievel's promise to launch himself across Idaho's Snake River Canyon — fortunately, Being Evel doesn't get too busted up when it crashes back to earth. more >>
