A wide majority of Americans find it acceptable for people to use their cellphones on mass transit and sidewalks and in other public places, a Pew Research Center survey has found. The study's authors say phones have become "a common part of the background noise" in many public situations. Exceptions include use of the devices in churches, at the movies and in restaurants.
