| Congress is Back and So is Monsanto! Chip In to Stop Industry Attempts to Keep You in the DARK About Your Food Dear Indiana, Today is the first day Congress is back in session. The biggest food corporations are pushing hard to get bills passed to take away country of origin labeling and stop genetically engineered food labels.
We need your help to make sure these bills don't pass. Can you chip in to help mobilize to stop these industry bills?
This month in Congress is going to be a roller coaster.
As Congress faces a government shutdown on October 1 and parties stand off over the Iran negotiations, this month is bound for legislative chaos. This sets the stage for Big Ag's corporate allies to slip bad amendments into bills that have to be voted on. It will take our constant vigilance and your help to get through this month without bills that set us back 15 years.
Donate to help stop these industry bills.
Here's our plan to protect your right to know this month: - Our policy staff will be monitoring all legislation for attempts to take away country of origin labeling, or take away states' rights to label genetically engineered foods (Monsanto's Dream Bill!);
- Our lobbyists will be meeting with key Senate offices to make sure the members have accurate information and vote the right way;
- Our staff in key states like New York, Ohio, Maryland, Illinois, Oregon, Colorado, California and others across the country will be mobilizing thousands of people to call their Senators and put pressure on them to vote the right way.
Can you chip in to help put this plan into action?
The big food corporations like Monsanto, Dow, Tyson and Cargill have been waiting for this moment, and they're betting that things will be so chaotic that Senators won't even know what they're voting on. And they might be right, because a lot of times these things sound good in name. It's not until you dig a little deeper that you figure out that something like the "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act" that the House passed in July actually prevents states from labeling genetically engineered foods. That's why we call it the Denying Americans the Right to Know Act (DARK Act).
Additionally, big meat packers have been trying to undo country of origin labeling for meat since it became mandatory in 2008. They're using a World Trade Organization ruling as an opportunity to take away these common sense labels, and members of Congress are lining up to take away your right to know where your food comes from.
Small- and medium-sized farmers rely on labels that give people vital information about where their food comes from, and how it's been produced. "Product of USA" should always be something we can find when we go to the grocery store. Can you chip in to help us fight for common sense food labels?
People who care about their health and the environment want more information about the food we eat, not less. In poll after poll, more than 90 percent of people want food to be labeled if it contains genetically engineered ingredients. Several states have already passed laws requiring labeling, including Vermont, which will require labels on all foods starting next summer, unless this industry bill passes the Senate and becomes law.
Food & Water Watch doesn't take any money from corporations or the government, so we can remain truly independent and fight for what's right when it comes to protecting our access to safe food and clean water. We're going to do everything we can this month to defend country of origin labels and state GMO labels, but we need your help.
Can you chip in to help us fight for what's right when it comes to food labeling?
Thanks for your support,
