Facebook is the main driving force behind a surge in social network ad revenue globally, a market that eMarketer projects will top $25 billion this year. More than $16 billion of that sum will go to Facebook, with Instagram accounting for $600 million.

Kardashians expand to Internet-based entertainment

More than a million subscribers have signed up in the past 10 days for subscription-based Web and mobile channels featuring content by the Kardashian-Jenner sisters. The $3-a-month user fee is just one source of revenue for the channels by Whalerock Industries, which will also sell ad space and experiment with micro-transactions.

Media partners want Snapchat to reinstate ad sharing
Snapchat removed the ability for consumers to share ads on Discover channels, but the company is in negotiations with major media publishers to reintroduce ad sharing. "It would allow brands to get interactive, and it would drive engagement back through Discover," Delmondo CEO Nick Cicero said.

Facebook explores ways to monetize Messenger
A Facebook executive says the company may monetize a feature that allows brands to send private messages to Messenger users. Other ideas being explored include automating purchases and introducing ads that, when clicked, start a private chat between the consumer and brand reps.

Twitter plans to tweak tweet, follow buttons
Twitter's tweet and follow buttons are in for an October redesign to sharpen their appearance and swap out the gray backgrounds for blue. Planned changes will include some technical tweaks that developers are advised to note.

Marketers should stay on top of Twitter mentions, because many customers turn to the social media site not only to talk about brands but for answers to customer-service queries, Lisa Woods writes. Prioritize tweets by the scale of the problem and how many followers a user has, be consistent with brand tone and create metrics to measure how you're responding on the platform, Woods advises.

A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals lawsuit argues that a macaque monkey that took a selfie of itself should retain copyright of the resulting image, which has since gone viral. PETA activists want to see proceeds from the photo be used to benefit the monkey and other animals on an Indonesian nature reserve.
