Man Builds Airplane From Scratch by Watching YouTube Videos

Posted: 13 Sep 2015 02:00 AM PDT

I fixed my fridge by watching a howto video online, but that's nothing compared to what Asmelash Zerefu of Ethiopia did: He built an airplane by watching YouTube videos.

Zerefu has always wanted to be a pilot, but in 2001, he was turned down from the Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy because he was about half an inch too short. But that crushing setback didn't deter him: Zerefu decided to build himself a plane from scratch.

Jonathan Wells of The Telegraph has the story:

... following ten years of planning, the day arrived that Zerefu had to begin construction on Ethiopia's first ever home-built aircraft. After incorporating the design of the Clark-Y Airfoil Wing into his own unique plans, and tailoring other existing plane parts, Zerefu began the long and arduous task of sourcing the components and materials he would need to construct his very own magnificent flying machine.

"I collected from garages and workshops, and Merkato - which is Africa's largest market - in Addis Ababa. I used first and second-hand materials to build my aircraft."

Did Zerefu succeed? Read the rest of the story over at The Telegraph.

Some Of The Most Memorable Screw-Ups In Comic History

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Comics have a consistent release schedule that leaves a lot of room for mistakes, and yet a surprisingly low number of errors make it into print.

It's easy to assume syndicated comics would be full of errors since they're (generally) released daily, but errors that occur are usually the publisher's fault and not the creator's, even though it's the creators who feel the backlash in the end.

Garfield's Jim Davis felt this backlash back in 2010 when a strip he'd drawn nearly a year earlier was released on Veteran's Day and taken out of context as an insult against veterans.

In the world of comic books screw-ups are usually a result of an artist or writer's poor judgment, since errors are generally caught by editors before the issue is printed.

Stan Lee was working as editor when he allowed Marvel's Tales Of Suspense #92 to be printed with a terrible joke told by Captain America, a guy not generally known for his clever quips.

The joke was seen as "one of the funniest lines of dialogue in cartooning history", and later reprints feature a "corrected" version of the joke.

Finger Cookies Are Perfect for Dipping

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Italian designer Paolo Ulian has a great idea for a cookie design! His thimble-shaped cookies are ideal for dipping in chocolate, caramel, and syrup. It's a tidy, efficient way of getting these drippy foods in you rmouth. Ulian is, as you can see, suggesting Nutella. I definitely won't argue with this choice!

Is Masturbation Good for You?

Mark Twain wrote a 36-page essay on it. George Carlin said that if God hadn't intended humans to do it, he would have made their arms shorter. It's the solo flight: masturbation. AsapSCIENCE takes on the topic in a nonprurient manner in their latest video. So watch it if you're so inclined, in the name of SCIENCE, of course.

Artisanal Bindle

If a rolling duffel is just not hipster enough for you, it's time to go full hobo and get yourself an bindle. But don't just grab any old stick and rag, get yourself a "locally-grown, naturally-fallen artisanal bindle bags" from Josiah and Dusty, the Bindle Bros of (you guessed it) Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

"We're trying to build adventures, one stick, one bindle at a time," Dusty said to the New York Times. "You can fit any physical objects in a bindle," added Josiah,"but bindles are really meant for your hopes and your dreams."

These bindles ain't cheap: a basic one goes for $99, and fancy ones can cost up to $350. "There's a lot of R and D that goes into constructing one of these gems," Josiah defended his handmade creation, "You can't just tie a bandanna to the end of a stick." And business is booming:

But before you rage against the inanity of the idea of an artisanal bindle (come on, you're kicking yourself because you didn't think of it first), read the full story behind the Bindle Bros over at the New York Times.

I wonder if you can carry artisanal firewood in one of those bindles.

Seven Times When Having A Low Budget Resulted In Movie Magic

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Producers have to adhere to a strict budget and milestone timeline to get their film completed per studio standards, and if a film seems like it's going over budget they pull the plug and move on to the next project.

But many crafty filmmakers have figured out ways to work around budget constraints, and their movie making on the cheap became the stuff of Hollywood legend.

Take the Monty Python crew for instance- they wanted to have real life horses in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but they were shooting on a budget and simply could not afford them.

So they resurrected an old time foley trick and turned two coconut halves into the clop of a horse's hooves, and one of the most iconic gags in comedy history was born.

15 Facts About the Dakota Building

The legendary Dakota on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is a beautiful building in the German Renaissance style that overlooks Central Park. The 131-year-old building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, is one of the most sought-after residential co-ops in the city, with apartments priced between five and thirty million dollars.

The building also has quite a history. Roman Polanski shot scenes for Rosemary's Baby there. A huge list of celebrities have called the building home, including Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, and Boris Karloff. John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived there, and Lennon was killed just outside the building.

Prior to Lennon's death, however, he and Yoko learned of a suggestion put forth by Stephen Birmingham in his 1996 book Life at the Dakota. Birmingham claimed that the previous resident of Lennon's apartment hid $30,000 under the master-bedroom floor. The mystery has never been solved though, because the management wouldn't allow the floor to be destroyed in order to search for the cash.
