| 15 Awesome Sand Castles Inspired by Disney and Pixar Posted: 14 Sep 2015 05:00 AM PDT The kids may be back to school and Labor Day may already have passed, but summer doesn't technically end until September 22. So if you're one of those procrastinators that still needs to get out to the beach, maybe these awesome Disney sand sculptures will give you the motivation you need to enjoy a little more summer before the season crawls to a close. BraveTo announce the release of Brave back in 2012, Disney World made this impressive sculpture. Keys to the Magic Travel even noted that she knew the sculpture was real because after it rained that day, the art already needed a little repair. Wall-EHans Veneman spotted this impressive Wall-E tribute at the Disney-themed European Sand Sculptures Festival in Noordwijk. Sleeping BeautyYou'd have to be asleep to not appreciate the beauty of this amazing creation displayed at the European Sand Sculptures Festival in Noordwijk also photographed by Hans Veneman. FantasiaThis epic Fantasia sculpture was a four-sized masterpiece with centaurs, sorcerer Mickey and dancing animals everywhere. Marie -ll captured the artists at work on the amazing creation. Sleeping Beauty's CastleSleeping Beauty's Castle from Paris Disneyland was brilliantly recreated at the 2011 Sand Sculpture Festival in Blankenberge. Walt Disney & MickeyAccording to Inside the Magic, Disney's own PR department was so impressed by the sculptures at the Sand Sculpture Festival in Blankenberge that they spoke to artists at the event to discuss building similar creations at their parks. Snow WhitePoisoned apples look decidedly less delicious when carved in sand -which I'm sure is a big problem for this evil witch. Alice in WonderlandWho doesn't love a mad tea party -especially with a crazy Hatter that would dissolve if he was actually exposed to the beverage. Via Norbert Schnitzler [Flickr] CarsWhether you love Cars or simply the Radiator Springs Racers at California Adventure, it's hard not to adore this cute Lightning McQueen sculpture featured at the Sand Sculpture Festival in Blankenberge. The Lion KingThe artist who carved this masterpiece did an unbelievable job at capturing the malice and regality of Mufasa's greatest adversary. The Sword in the StoneWhile Disney parks encourage you to get hands on an attempt to pull the sword from the stone, something tells me the artists and curators at the Sand Sculpture Festival in Blankenberge wouldn't have been so happy if you made the same effort here. RatatouilleWhat's worse than discovering a rat in your kitchen? Probably discovering it's a sand rat that's been cooking all your food! But hey, at least they're cute. Mickey and MinnieWho doesn't love a day at the beach -especially when they're made out of sand? Mickey and Minnie sure know what summer's all about. Via Herve Bry Pirates of the CaribbeanYou don't need to go to the depths of the sea's deepest locker to enjoy a great look at Davey Jones. Instead, enjoy this incredible sea sculpture version taken by Norbert Schnitzler. FrozenIt's just like Olaf always dreamed -a lazy day in the sun and sand. Best of all, he's sure not to melt this time. Via William Warby I don't know about you guys, but just looking at all these fun pics makes me want to go to the beach -and then immediately head for Disneyland. I'd better get packing! | ||||||||

| Photographs From California's Golden Age Of Skateboarding Posted: 14 Sep 2015 03:00 AM PDT As a kid skating meant grinding curbs, jumping stairs and hanging out in parking lots behind grocery stores looking for that perfect street session. But way before street skating and technical tricks became all the rage sidewalk surfers rolled around in style on their big wheeled cruisers, and discovered that droughts lead to empty pools, and empty pools are the perfect place for a skate sessions. Photographer Hugh Holland was on the scene in the late 1970s capturing the meteoric rise of skateboarding, and Hugh's street photography style and knack for catching skaters at just the right moment have influenced skate photography ever since. His wonderfully nostalgiac photos can be found in the book Locals Only: California Skateboarding 1975-1978, featuring images from Hugh's photographic journey up and down the Golden State that mostly took part in Los Angeles. | Abandoned Wooden Soviet Spaceship Looks Like a Great Playground Feature Posted: 14 Sep 2015 02:00 AM PDT The Buran program was the Soviet Union's response to America's space shuttle program. It lagged far behind its US counterpart, launching only once in 1988 in an automated test flight. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the remains of the Buran program, including the shuttle, were left to rot--literally. Pictured above is a 1:3 scale model of the Buran orbiter discovered in an abandoned part of an airfield in Moscow. It was used in wind tunnel tests during the development of the Buran design. Aleksander Markin photographed the model 2 years ago. Christopher Jobson of Colossal says that it looks like a great feature for a children's playground. With a bit of cleaning, I'd say that he's right! You can see more photos at Colossal. | ||||||||

| Jaguar Chews On Ayahuasca Vines And Totally Trips Out Posted: 13 Sep 2015 10:00 PM PDT Taking psychedelic drugs may seem like a strictly human thing to do, but the animal kingdom is full of critters who like to blow off a little steam by ingesting mind altering substances. These animals purposely seek out and ingest plants with psychoactive properties, and prove that tripping on psychedelic subtances is as natural as can be. The life of an apex predator can be pretty rugged, with lots of stalking, fighting and slaughtering and very little downtime. So it's not surprising that they would be fans of ingesting ayahuasca, one of the most powerful psychedelic substances on earth, because it gives them a little time to rediscover their inner kitten. -Via Dangerous Minds | ||||||||
| Railroad Tracks and Ties Form an Incredibly Sturdy Ping Pong Table Posted: 13 Sep 2015 09:00 PM PDT This is the Click-Clack Table Tennis Table, a unique luxury ping pong table for specific tastes. It's regulation size, including the net. But the net and the table supports are railroad tracks. Holding them up are huge slabs of oak and hickory that used to be railroad ties. It's made by Railyard Studios, a company that salvages wood and steel from railroads to make bespoke furniture. This particular table was recovered from the Tennessee Coal & Iron Company. The markings on the steel and wood indicate that they were made in 1904 and 1921, respectively. -via My Modern Met | ||||||||

| This Toilet in a Bar Was Made Specifically for Puking Posted: 13 Sep 2015 10:00 AM PDT Redditor ThangCZ says that a nightclub in the Czech Republic has a chest-high toilet made specifically for vomiting. The steel supports helpfully provide steadiness for the generously inebriated. I suppose that if you own a bar where people regularly barf, then this is a practical innovation. Note to the very drunk: puking only. -via Boing Boing | ||||||||
| Ten Simple Typos With Surprisingly Huge Costs Posted: 13 Sep 2015 08:00 AM PDT
"Back in 2010, research carried out by Harvard University revealed that typographical errors in website addresses were netting Google about $497 million per year. The researchers estimated that roughly 0.7 percent of attempts to visit a site ended up with users accidentally visiting a different site with a similar name. For instance, Google’s smartest and most charismatic users might want to visit Listverse.com, but end up visiting Listvers.com instead. These “typographical error” sites (often called typosquatting sites) receive up to 68.2 million page views every single day. And about 57 percent of such sites are used to host advertisements, many of them sourced through Google. Not all corporate typos are moneymakers.Read about some companies that lost millions or were put out of business by a few errant keystrokes in this article. | ||||||||
