Photographer Transforms the Delicious into Divine Design

Posted: 20 Sep 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Photographer Sam Kaplan painstakingly creates these superb structures out of candies and cookies in his new series "Pits and Pyramids."  Each cookie and candy is carefully placed in the perfect position to capture a flawless pattern with each shot. The shot is skillfully lit to bring out the detail in every layer. Kaplan jokes of his meticulous setup and shoot,

"I guess 'precise' is a good way to describe it. Maybe even a little OCD."

See additional photos here and check out Kaplan's website for more amazing food photos and other fine works.

Guitar Boy: A Combination Electric Guitar and Nintendo Game Boy

Posted: 20 Sep 2015 02:00 AM PDT

Fibbex, a member of the BitFixGaming boards, made this sophisticated and precisely constructed guitar that looks just like a scaled up Nintendo Game Boy. It's completely functional in both modes, releasing impressive sounds and offering playable classic Nintendo games.

A Raspberry Pi microcontroller runs the emulator. The A and B buttons impressively serve double duty as gaming buttons and volume and tone dials for the guitar. You can see more build photos and descriptions here.

Princess Leia is Nearly Two Years Older Than Luke Skywalker

Posted: 20 Sep 2015 12:00 AM PDT

A group of British university students have declared that in the Star Wars universe, Leia is  1.75 years older than Luke by the end of the original trilogy, despite the fact that they are twins, born on the same day. The reason involves Einstein’s theory of relativity. And math.

Students at the University of Leicester made their calculations based on the twins’ journeys to Cloud City. Leia travels from the neighbouring system of Anoat and arrives at Cloud City in around 6.72 hours, while Luke travels from the much more distant planet Dagobah, which takes around one week.

Additionally, as Leia travels in the Millennium Falcon, a much larger ship with more powerful engines than Luke’s X-Wing Starfighter, the students assumed that it reaches a higher speed.

Leia’s journey yields a time dilation of 62.6 days; however Luke experiences a time dilation of 700.8 days.

The students concluded that Luke is therefore 1.75 years younger than Leia, possibly rendering them the first twins ever to have more than a year between their ages.

Oh, there’s more, which you can read in the original research paper (downloadable here) or in shorter form at the Telegraph. There are, of course, arguments in the comments, about George Lucas’ lack of familiarity with astrophysics and the the difference between hyperspace drive vs. warp drive vs. jump drive, as everyone tries to out-geek each other. The first thing I thought of was that Leia, being a princess and a Senator from Alderaan before it was destroyed, probably traveled through the cosmos a lot while Luke was growing up as a moisture farmer, which probably skewed their ages way before they met.

Yoshidzilla For The Rescue! by Georgeslemercenaire

We've all thought of Yoshi as a hero for years, respected him for saving baby Mario's life and for helping the Super Bros. end that big, bad Bowser's reign of evil, but that was before seeing Yoshi in his final form. When necessary Yoshi can become giant like his kaiju cousin Godzilla, and when he's fifty feet tall and full of eggs he's more than a match for even the mighty Donkey Kong! If only Mario had called for Yoshi's help sooner, we could have skipped those first few game appearances and gone straight to the super adventures...

Show your love for Yoshi in all his fantastic forms with this Yoshidzilla For The Rescue! t-shirt by Georgeslemercenaire, but beware- you might end up battling it out with your friends for this sweet shirt!

Crazy Cocaine Paraphernalia Ads From The 1970s

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 10:00 PM PDT

If you've ever wondered whether cocaine use was really as prevalent in the 70s and 80s as movies and TV shows claim then the short answer is yes and no.

Yes people were doing a heck of a lot more cocaine in the 70s and 80s than they are today, and doing it far more openly, but not everyone was in to cocaine.

Some people were into champagne, or yoga, or pina coladas and makin' love at midnight, and yet cocaine use was so popular paraphernalia companies were taking out whole page magazine ads to sell their sniffy goods.

Granted, these magazines were typically drug or subculture rags like Easy Rider, HiLife or head, but it's still hard to imagine a time when it would be okay to sell cocaine sniffing supplies to drug users without fear of repercussion.

Mini Horse Therapy Brings Joy to the People Who Need it Most

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses
is a non-profit organization based in Florida but operates wordwide, doing business in New York, California and as far away as Greece. The organization uses miniature horses to reach people of all ages who need healing, love and care, such as survivors of the Sandy Hook shooting, those displaced or injured by the 2013 Oklahoma tornadoes, the elderly in nursing homes and hospices and sick, disabled or hospitalized children.

The most famous horse at Gentle Carousel is Magic, a blue-eyed black mare. Magic was selected by Time magazine as one of the top ten heroic animals in history, for the following heartwarming story:

"Magic went to visit a patient who had lived in an assisted-living facility and hadn't spoken to anyone during her three years there. But the moment she laid eyes on Magic, she said, "Isn't she beautiful?" Those first words caused the staff to break out in tears, and she continued to communicate from that point onward."

Co-founder of Gentle Carousel Debbie Garcia-Bengochea elaborated:

"The activities director was so surprised to hear the woman speak that she began to cry. She told the woman that she loved her. 'I love you too,' was the answer, her first sentence to another person in all that time. Magic always seems to find the person in the room who needs her the most."

Don't miss the Gentle Carousel Facebook page, the perfect place to visit for anyone who needs a smile. It has precious pictures and stories of these beautiful animals and the people whose days they brighten.

"The Convincer" Simulates a 5 MPH Car Crash

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 06:00 PM PDT

You don't need to wear a seat belt if you're traveling at a low speed, right? Wrong. The Convincer, a safety demonstration tool owned by the Connecticut State Police, shows why. Strap in and experience a 5 MPH crash. Feel your chest slam against the seat belt. That hurts, doesn't it? Now imagine if that wasn't your chest hitting the seat belt, but your face hitting the windshield.

That's why you wear a seat belt. When the State Police set up The Convincer at the University of Hartford, they were very convincing.

They also had a car rollover simulator, which looks fun!

When Robots Meet

Dogs Perform an Array of Tricks in Unison, Skateboard on a Half Pipe

Pup phenoms Jumpy and Dash (previously at Neatorama), a border terrier/blue heeler mix and a Jack Russell terrier, respectively, execute an impressive array of tricks in unison in this clip. (An unidentified doggie friend comes in late to the fun.) They have been trained with the use of a clicker, which their trainer can be heard using during the exercise.

The older video below, from October of '13, shows the pair skateboarding on a half pipe at a skate park, set to Halloween-ish music. It seems that there is little these intelligent canines can't be taught to perform.

Tracking the Origins of 7 Pirate Stereotypes

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Today is September 19th, and that means the annual celebration known as Talk Like a Pirate Day! In addition to talking like a pirate, which mainly involves affecting a harsh voice and drawing out your ARRRRrrs, some folks also dress up like pirates. Of course, that involves a few stereotypes: actual buccaneers from the golden age of piracy dressed in whatever they had that would work for seafaring life. Have you ever wondered why pirate costumes almost always include eyepatches, peg legs, and parrots? You’d suppose a few pirates had those, but not all that many. Mental_floss looks into the origins of those stereotypes, as well as some others we associate with the life of a pirate.

For Sale: Princess Leia's Slave Outfit

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 10:00 AM PDT

(Image: Disney)

In Return of the Jedi, the gangster Jabba the Hutt captured Princess Leia Oragana and enslaved her. He dressed her in a luxurious and revealing metal bikini. It appeared on screen only briefly, but has ever since been an icon of geek fashion, imitated and altered many times.

Now you can own the original worn by Carrie Fisher. The auction house Profiles in History is offering it among 50 other Star Wars props for sale on October 1. Experts anticipate that it will sell for between $80,000 and $120,000.

(Photo: Profiles in History)

The New York Post describes the other goodies that are available for Star Wars fans with deep pockets:

Another expected top seller is a miniature blockade runner spaceship from 1977’s “A New Hope,” the ship carrying Princess Leia and droids C-3PO and R2-D2. […]

The intricate 16-inch model comes from the collection of late visual effects Oscar-winner Grant McCune, and is expected to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000.

A Rebel Fleet Trooper helmet from the first film, the only one to ever be sold at a public auction, is estimated to bring upwards of $150,000.

The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 08:00 AM PDT

This is the best idea for a new contest we’ve seen in a long time. The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is accepting entries only until October first, so if you have a great -and funny- wildlife snapshot, grab it and enter! It has to be an unmanipulated photo you've taken, but it doesn't have to be from the past year. The winner will receive a photo safari in Tanzania and a Nikon camera.

Even if you don’t enter, you’ll want to browse through the submitted photographs. Since there are a lot of them, you might want to start with The Telegraph’s favorites here and here. -via Everlasting Blort

The Time Bud Light Tried To Go Grunge

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Nothing says 90s grunge like flannel shirts, goatees and sipping on an ice cold Bud Light, the watered down King of Beers.

Okay, that last bit is a lie, and it all sounds like a pack of lies if you know anything about grunge because, as far as subcultures go, grunge didn't really have many fashion constants.

But advertisers rarely understand subcultures, so when they're trying to stay on top of the latest trends they make ridiculous targeted advertisements like this "grunge" ad for Bud Light.

(YouTube Link)

Unfortunately heroin will always be more closely identified with the grunge scene than beer, if only those "grungers" had succumbed to Bud Light's cutting edge advertising instead of a highly addictive opiate...

Famous Pirate by vinsse aka vintz

You don't have to be particularly mobile to be a good pirate, you just have to be ruthless, greedy, and surrounded by all the right scavengers and slaves. That's how Jabba came to be the star of a one Hutt galley of greed, and despite his wormy appearance most people know better than to start a war with ol' Jolly Jowl Jabba.

Spread some terror on the high seas of life with this Famous Pirate t-shirt by vinsse aka vintz, it's funnier than watching a Hutt get choked out by Leia!

Diesel and the Box

Posted: 19 Sep 2015 06:00 AM PDT

Diesel found a box, and doesn’t want to let go of it. It’s a nice box, but holding onto it is causing a problem. It’s turned him into a Roomba, bouncing off the barriers of his immediate environment. For three whole minutes.
