| Super Pika - A Different Kind Of Mighty Mouse Posted: 07 Sep 2015 04:00 AM PDT Ash decided that the easiest way to be the very best was to cheat, so he set out to enhance Pika's power levels through artificial means. He tried steroids, power packed protein shakes and even hooked poor Pika up to a large battery to see if that would increase his power levels, but nothing seemed to work. Then one day he discovered a chunk of glowing rock in the forest, which seemed to be emanating cosmic rays. A scientist told him it was a chunk of kryptonite big enough to kill Superman, but it seemed to be having the opposite effect on cute little Pikachu... Power up your geeky wardrobe with this Super Pika t-shirt by Berserk7, it's the superheroic way to catch 'em all in costume! | Posted: 07 Sep 2015 04:00 AM PDT The humans have put wavy things on their moving dens. They exist to frighten and confuse cats. Sometimes they even squirt water. You may bat at them, but you will never be able to catch one. This compilation video shows cats doing their best to defeat the fiendish windshield wipers, but never succeeding. -via Ace of Spades HQ | ||||||||

| Library Design Wraps You in a Cocoon of Books Posted: 07 Sep 2015 02:00 AM PDT
The design studio Anagrama developed this unique bookshelves design for a library in Monterrey, Mexico. The city council asked the designers to compose a space that would be comfortable and cozy for the enjoyment of literature. I'd say they succeeded! The bookshelves form a lattice structure that wrap around the walls and ceiling. The dome-like shape ends in a vanishing point at the top of the stairs that seems so very far away. If you want to retreat into a good book, then this in the space in which to do it. You can see more photos at Design Boom.
| The 12 Cognitive Biases That Challenge Our Good Judgment Posted: 07 Sep 2015 01:00 AM PDT
No matter how intelligent one is, we all are susceptible to glitches in our thought process known as cognitive biases. Psychologists define cognitive bias in the following way: "A cognitive bias is a type of error in thinking that occurs when people are processing and interpreting information in the world around them. Cognitive biases are often a result of our attempt to simplify information processing. They are rules of thumb that help us make sense of the world and reach decisions with relative speed. Unfortunately, these biases sometimes trip us up, leading to poor decisions and bad judgments." One such cognitive bias is something we may experience after splurging on items that we don't necessarily need and/or can't quite afford. You know the thought process that is your mind attempting to justify such a dubious purchase, all the while making major stretches? That is the aptly named cognitive bias known as "post-purchase rationalization." This is a method of making ourselves feel better after poor decisions, particularly as consumers.
| Hunter Bags Prey with Bare Hands Posted: 07 Sep 2015 12:00 AM PDT The brave hunter has been on the trail for some time now. He spots his quarry in the brush. He circles, in order to confuse it. Then the skillful hunter moves in to capture his prize, using only his wits and his bare hands! And the prize catch will make this Labor Day picnic the best ever! -via Digg | ||||||||
| You Can Make Your Entire Home Look Like Mondrian's Composition II Posted: 06 Sep 2015 10:00 PM PDT Piet Mondrian's iconic painting Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow has captivated the public imagination since the artist completed it in 1930. It has inspired people to mimic its enchanting collection of forms and colors in other media, including Jello, cake, and case mods. You can hang a print copy of the original painting in your home. But you can also fill your home with furniture inspired by it. Dornob has a roundup of several pieces of furniture that look like Composition II, including dignified bookshelves, couches, chairs, a lamp, and wall decorations. Among them is this beanbag chair by Creativando, an Italian home furnishings outlet. | ||||||||

| People Learn The True Meaning Of The Lyrics To Macarena Posted: 06 Sep 2015 06:00 PM PDT It's a simple, excruciatingly catchy song with original lyrics sung in Spanish, and it seems many people have no idea what the lyrics to Los del Rio's hit song Macarena really mean. People play it in schools, at weddings, at ballgames, and they generally think the song is about a dance or, if they understand a bit of Spanish, about a woman. But who is this Macarena, and why was this song written about her? Watch this video by Distractify featuring 90s kids reacting to the true meaning of the lyrics to Macarena. So it turns out Macarena was far from "wholesome", and people have been dancing all happy to a tune about a girl who's livin' la vida escandalosa! -Via Cheezburger | ||||||||
| If Hollywood Age Gaps Were Gender-Swapped Posted: 06 Sep 2015 04:00 PM PDT
The age gaps of male and female couples in film has been a topic of debate in the last year. Actresses have commented about their frustration over being declared "too old" to play love interests to comparably aged or slightly older male actors. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal told The Wrap magazine: “There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time. I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh.” Actress Emma Thompson told Vulture: “I remember somebody saying to me that I was too old for Hugh Grant, who’s like a year younger than me, in Sense and Sensibility. I said, ‘Do you want to go take a flying leap?’” The article linked below is an interesting collection of pictures that turns the tables on gender in Hollywood love interest age gaps. Some of the comparison photos are shown here; see the rest at BuzzFeed.
| DJ Link - His Majora Remix Will Blow Your Mind! Posted: 06 Sep 2015 02:00 PM PDT Link had already mastered the art of adventuring, the ocarina of time and acting on stage while wearing a mask, so what could possibly be next for that Hylian hero? Getting the party started, that's what, and when DJ Link started hitting the wheels of steel people and cuccos alike started shaking their tail feathers. He was born to be a legend, at least according to his beloved Zelda, but there was never any specific reference to what kind of legend he would become, so legendary DJ really seemed to fit the bill. And when he saw Ganon getting his groove on, shuffling across the dance floor like a man possessed by the rhythm, Link knew he was on the right track... Show the world you're musically minded and love a good geeky remix with this DJ Link t-shirt by Theduc, it's the totally hip way to pay homage to a gaming legend! | The 10 Baddest Names in Motorcycle Gang History Posted: 06 Sep 2015 12:00 PM PDT The use of the word “baddest” may seem a bit odd for an article headline. Your mind automatically wants to change it to “worst.” In this case, it is actually a cleaned-up version of “badassest,” which I would have corrected to “most badass.” You might even read it as “best.”
See there, you’ve learned something already. But notice how far down on the list these names are. You’ll want to read the others at mental_floss.
| The World Gravy Wrestling Championships Posted: 06 Sep 2015 10:00 AM PDT
It is, surely, the greatest of all sports. Two men or two women enter a pool of 1,500 liters of gravy. After 2 minutes of savage wrestling in the slippery, meaty sauce, one prevails. It is a noble tradition in Lancashire, UK. Joel Hicks--a competitor known as Galdalf the Grey--emerged victorious at the end of the championships in Rossendale. Nicole Taylor-Lyons won the women's category. Many of the competitors wore costumes. Proceeds from the event are donated to charity. This video is a compilation of scenes from the gravy wrestling competition. -via VA Viper
| Posted: 06 Sep 2015 08:00 AM PDT New York resident Jake Katz is getting married. He planned a four-day Labor Day weekend trip with the guys to Chicago as a bachelor party. But because of weather and cancelled flights, only one made it to Chicago that day: Robbie Chernow. He was in Chicago by himself. What to do? He proceeded to go to all the planned events by himself, documenting the trip on Instagram under the hashtag #chicagoforone. Chernow went to a Bears game, the Hancock Tower, the Navy Pier, and all the places the group were going to visit together, with pictures to prove it. He found the people of Chicago very sympathetic to his plight. Then his Instagram feed went viral, and Chernow’s adventures really stepped up as folks all around the country cheered him on. Friday night, groom Jake Katz finally showed up, and the two are making the most of a two-day bachelor party for two in Chicago. However, he’s still taking pictures of his lonely self to keep the meme going. Read the story at Buzzfeed and see more pictures at Chernow’s Instagram feed. | ||||||||

| Posted: 06 Sep 2015 06:00 AM PDT Eddie is a big man- he barely clears the ceiling in his apartment. But he is afraid of spiders, as is his wife Heather, who insists that Eddie kill a spider in their home. The spider is the size of a quarter, according to Heather (eye roll). They should have had the kids get rid of it, because they don’t seem too concerned until they witness their parents’ histrionics. Now they’ll be scarred for life. -via Daily Picks and Flicks |
