20 Eye-Opening Facts About Eyes Wide Shut

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 04:00 AM PDT

A masked Tom Cruise in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut | Image: Warner Bros.

Fans of legendary film director Stanley Kubrick are likely aware of his extremely exacting process of filmmaking. Famously perfectionistic and demanding of not only himself, but everyone on his sets, it was a challenge for even the most talented and disciplined of professional actors and crew to work with him. Kubrick always did multiple takes of each scene; it wasn't unusual for him to do fifty or more. Actress Vinessa Shaw, who played Domino in Eyes Wide Shut, said in an interview about the shoot,

"At first I thought, is he trying to wear me down as an actor? I thought like all the preconceived notions I have of this character, is he trying to get me to the basest of level with this scene? Because I would pick up a glass and move it and he, 30 or 40 takes later would say,

'Did you do that before?' and I’m like, 'I’ve been doing it every single time' and he was like ok keep doing that.” And then I started noticing how he was setting up every other shot and I noticed what he was he would look at; he looked first at the lighting, then the cameras, then the actors and it was multiple takes until it was perfect for each subject he was looking at. And so I was thinking, “Oh my god, he’s not even paying attention to anything I do until the 40th take” because he’s really just trying to get everything surrounding the actual actors and then he goes into that scene so it was- again he was a perfectionist at every bit of the filmmaking process and the actors happened to just be one of the later parts that he was paying attention to."

Shaw's quote lends insight as to Kubrick's obsession with so many takes. It also may explain number nine on Mental Floss' list of facts about Eyes Wide Shut:

9. CRUISE DEVELOPED ULCERS WHILE SHOOTING THE FILM

“I didn't want to tell Stanley," Cruise told TIME. “He panicked. I wanted this to work, but you're playing with dynamite when you act. Emotions kick up. You try not to kick things up, but you go through things you can't help.”

A highly trained German Shepherd of the US Army is falsely accused of biting his handler. He's on the run with a $200 bounty on his head. Now Joe wanders across America, helping people he meets while seeking the dog who committed the crime.

This is Run, Joe, Run--a real television show that actually aired in 1974. It's a retelling of The Fugitive, but with a dog. It's 1 of 5 preposterous Saturday morning live action TV programs that aired on American television during the 1970s. They include a high school teacher who turns into a 12-year old boy and, of course, a contribution by Sid and Marty Kroff about Bigfoot.

Halloween Already

Posted: 08 Sep 2015 02:00 AM PDT

Ugh. I can’t believe they are already coming out with cartoons about how people complain about how Halloween stuff is already out. But seriously, you can blame the school year starting so soon (the first week of August where I live). When the back-to-school supply aisles are picked over and looking empty, the stores have to put something there. Personally, I love it. This summer has been an awfully long one, and now I have a month to plan and purchase my house decorations and a month to display them. Also: candy. Iconic Dishes and the Cities That Made Them Famous

Toasted Ravioli | Image: Timothy Boyd

Everyone has their food favorites, but do you know where and how the recipe originated? Sometimes we eat foods in our own corners of the world and are surprised when they are nowhere to be found when we travel. Conversely, we may be on vacation and stumble upon a delicious dish that we are unable to forget. The linked article mentions a number of beloved foods and explains their origins.

One of those foods is toasted ravioli. The delicious, slightly crunchy yet soft and chewy outside has a flavorful filling of beef, cheese, spinach/artichoke or whatever is desired. Toasted ravioli originated in St. Louis, Missouri, specifically at Blueberry Hill, a lively restaurant and bar that often features live bands. As the origin story goes, a cook at the establishment "accidentally" dropped ravioli into a deep fryer instead of hot water. Whether it was an accident or not, the outcome was savory.

Learn about the origins of more iconic dishes here.

Seventeen Phrases People Commonly Say Incorrectly

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 10:00 PM PDT

There are certain phrases used by English speaking people all over the world on a regular basis, phrases which have gone beyond the realm of idiom or cliché and become an inherent part of the English language.

But no matter how common the phrase there are people who will misuse, mangle and mix up the words in that phrase, defending their version with confidence.

How many times have you heard someone say “one in the same” “hunger pains” or “I could care less” when they really mean “one and the same” “hunger pangs” and “I couldn't care less”?

It may seem like a small and insignificant difference, but if people are going to use these phrases so often they might as well be saying them correctly!

Wet Stage Spells Trouble

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 09:00 PM PDT

The K-pop group GFriend performed their new song “Me Gusta Tu” in Gangwon Province, South Korea, Saturday night. The outdoor stage was slippery due to rain. Keep your eye on Yuju- she’s the one with the knee band. She wore it for compression, but after this performance she may be wearing one for injury.

(YouTube link)

Yuju must’ve had particularly bad luck that night. She wasn't the only one to fall, but she fell over and over, five times that I could count. Your heart will go out to her before the performance is over, as she keeps getting back up to carry on. Not that she had much of a choice, since this is lip-synched, and the track would have gone on without her. -via Time

Did Walt Disney Really Say Kurt Russell's Name Before He Died?

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 06:00 PM PDT

A celebrity's last words become a major part of their legend after they pass on, and sometimes even overshadows the celebrity's career.

But there's one guy who wasn't overshadowed by his last words, partly because people can't decide what his last words actually were. That guy is Walt Disney, and his last words have been the subject of many arguments over the years.

When Kurt Russell went on Jimmy Kimmel Live back in 2007 and declared his name was the last thing Walt Disney ever said he got some Disney historians riled up, including one who went to great lengths to disprove the myth.

Leading Disney historian Jim Korkis did an exhaustive amount of research to uncover what Walt actually “said” before he died, words written on paper since Walt was dying of lung cancer and couldn't speak, and the list surprisingly includes the words “Kirt (sp) Russell”.

Dear Dad, Send Money: Letters from Students in the Middle Ages

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 04:00 PM PDT

The more things change, the more they remain the same. One of the first things that students learn when they go off to college is that it’s expensive to live on your own, out from under your parents’ roof. It was the same way back when college was invented. This letter is from the 1220s:

B. to his venerable master A., greeting This is to inform you that I am studying at Oxford with the greatest diligence, but the matter of money stands greatly in the way of my promotion, as it is now two months since I spent the last of what you sent me. The city is expensive and makes many demands; I have to rent lodgings, buy necessaries, and provide for many other things which I cannot now specify. Wherefore I respectfully beg your paternity that by the promptings of divine pity you may assist me, so that I may be able to complete what I have well begun. For you must know that without Ceres and Bacchus Apollo grows cold.

Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and grains, is a nod to food, and of course, Bacchus is the god of wine. Adding his name might not have been the best idea. You can see more examples of medieval letters home from school at Medievalist. -via Digg

Viva La Empire - Sith Reverse Psychology

Darth's propaganda strategy simply wasn't working, and rather than recruiting new soldiers for the Empire his campaign was actually helping to create more Rebel forces, so he decided to switch gears and try some reverse psychology. He took a note from Che's propaganda playbook and printed posters for his Viva La Empire campaign, and before long he had wannabe revolutionaries lining up throughout the star destroyer waiting to sign up. The war was about to take an interesting turn, and Vader's new force would change the battlefield forces from clones to sheep...

The New York Prison that Doubled as a Clubhouse For Alimony Cheats

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 02:00 PM PDT

The Ludlow Street Jail in New York City has an interesting history. In the 19th century, it was a corrupt operation that had a tiered set of condition, depending on how much an inmate could afford to pay for favors. Pony up enough, and you might have a private cell and spend your days smoking cigars and playing billiards. Of course, this system meant less room, food, and protection for those would could not pay. Boss Tweed himself was incarcerated at the Ludlow Street jail, and he easily escaped from his luxury accommodations. Reform campaigns led to changes, but not all for the better.

In the early 20th century, almost all of the inmates left in the Ludlow Street Jail were men who had defaulted on their alimony payments. At the time, the laws in New York stated that if a man refused to pay alimony, he would be sentenced to six months in jail, after which he would be free of all further payments. Accordingly, divorced men whom the courts had decreed owed payments to their ex-wives began shrugging their shoulders and heading off to jail for an all-expenses paid vacation at what came to be nicknamed The New York Alimony Club.

Gone were the days of corrupt extortion. The days of gleeful misogyny had arrived. As one member of the club described to the New York Times in 1911, “Many of us have preferred to come here as a matter of principle rather than pay money that was demanded of us practically as black-mail from wives, who, while we were hard pressed, were living in luxury.”

The Alimony Club would host lavish holiday dinners for the inmates, and lived in a convivial little cabal—one that was “utopian,” according to the Times article. The new warden who arrived in 1912 even began playing music for the delinquent ex-husbands.

That’s just one episode in the sordid history of the Ludlow Street Jail, which you can read at Atlas Obscura.

The Dark Realities Of Working As A Birthday Clown

Don't let that painted on smile fool ya- working as a birthday clown is a really tough job, and many clowns go home feeling rather blue after a gig.

Well, aside from the fetishizers that is, and when you read the 5 Realities Of Being A Birthday Clown you'll agree- the smile is painted on for a reason!

Cats and Toilet Paper

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 12:00 PM PDT

If you’re a cat. discovering the toilet paper roll is a true epiphany. You can sink your claws into it nicely. It moves! And moving it round and round makes a nice pile of stuff to play with on the floor.

(YouTube link)

This is the biggest exception to the “over the top” rule of hanging toilet paper. If your cat gets in the habit of doing this, having the paper roll out underneath, while not keeping it from being shredded, will at least keep the entire roll off the floor. But as illustrated from the static image at the top, cats can eventually learn to get around this trick, too. -via Tastefully Offensive

Stunning Images Of People Who Are Definitely Not Afraid Of Heights

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 11:00 AM PDT

Many phobias interfere with life, making people afraid to go outside, enter rooms crowded with people, and so forth, but a fear of heights is (arguably) one of the less debilitating phobias.

When you have a fear of heights you can't get certain jobs or behold the breathtaking view from atop a skyscraper, but let's face it- you weren't going to become part of Big Ben's cleaning crew anyway, were you?

And then there are those people who have absolutely no problem working up high, people who don't seem to have an ounce of fear in 'em when it comes to heights.

They are the daredevils, the cool customers who work where only eagles dare, the brave rescuers and bold entertainers who walk the line to our earthbound amazement.

Whodunit: The Clumsy Thief

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 08:00 AM PDT

The following is a Whodunit by Hy ConradThese mysteries are from The Little Giant® Book of Whodunits by Hy Conrad and Matt LaFleur. Can you solve the mystery before you read the solution?

(Image credit: Flickr user ignatius decky)

Charlene Tyner was half-awake when she heard it, coming from downstairs, the sound of spilling coins. She checked the time—2 A.M.—then rolled over and went back to sleep.

In the morning, when Charlene walked into her kitchen, she immediately noticed the theft. The jar in which she kept her collection of silver dollars was completely empty. That's when she recalled the late night sound. And that's when she saw the refrigerator. It was askew, the only thing out of center in the perfectly maintained kitchen.

Charlene knelt down and reached into the narrow space between the refrigerator and the cabinet. "At least they didn't get them all," she thought as she pulled her arm out. Two silver dollars, all that was left of her prized collection. The irate housewife quickly raised the alarm.

Myrna, her sullen daughter, was the first one down. A would-be model, Myrna had already worked in a few fashion shows. Most of her time she spent hanging out with her no-good boyfriend. Her room was at the top of the stairs and she slept with the door open. "Someone walked by in the dark," she volunteered. "I heard the coins spilling, too. I thought it was just an accident."

Forest Tyner emerged from the downstairs bathroom. A gangling, gaunt man, he had never been Charlene's dream husband, but he was a good father. It was only after the wedding that she discovered his habit of spending half his paycheck at the local tavern. "I came in late," he admitted, alcohol still on his breath. "I didn't want to disturb you, so I slept on the couch. I didn't wake up till a few minutes ago."

Jesse, Charlene's son, lumbered down last. Obese and lazy, Jesse's twin passions were food and video games. "I came downstairs for a snack around midnight. I could hear Myrna snoring. Dad wasn't on the couch. I went back to bed and didn't hear anything."

Charlene looked around the kitchen and her heart sank. She had just figured out who had taken her coins.

Whodunit? And how did Charlene know?

Baconfest Was Everything It Was Cracked Up to Be

Posted: 07 Sep 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Did you know last Saturday was International Bacon Day? You would have if you went to the San Diego Baconfest that we previously wrote about. While they didn't feature any of the utterly insane bacon treats we wrote about a few weeks back, there were certainly some that could match them. Here's my account of the magical even that was Baconfest.

Upon entertaining the event, we were greeted by sampling booths by Hormel's Black Label Bacon -the event's biggest sponsor. While their bacon is good (particularly the jalapeno bacon that strangely tastes a bit like beef jerky), it was still the weakest part of the festival -even if you could just get handfuls of plain bacon to munch on. After all, if there's one thing better than bacon, it's bacon with other yumminess.

The festival was a lot bigger than I expected it to be -and a lot more crowded. In fact, it actually sold out the morning before the event. Even with the long lines though, there was still plenty of bacony goodness for all. My friend even figured out that there was something like 40 food and beer vendors.

Of course, even with all those vendors and lines, not everyone could be popular. While there's nothing wrong with the idea of having fresh organic fruits and vegetables delivered to your door, a festival dedicated to greasy, cholesterol-filled meat might not be the best place to advertise it.

One of the first bacon treats we encountered was actually one of our group's favorites from the whole event. The maple bourbon bacon stick was actually a thick slab of pork belly with a maple bacon sauce over it. It was heaven on a stick.

This fancy dish featured pork belly, mustard sauce, sauerkraut and a thin slice of radish. It was the savory complement to the sweet maple belly at the booth nearby.

I didn't get to try the Moinkballs by Grillfellas BBQ, but this picture from their Facebook makes me regret the fact that I missed them.

Cheesy grits with bacon are always a tasty treat, but the little truffle oil gave it an even richer flavor.

If you love sushi then you can understand how bacon makes everything better -even rice rolls.

There was even bacon kimchi.

The employees at the booths were working hard all day dishing and prepping delicious treats for the attendees -although some got off a little early when they actually ran out of food at their booths.

While most just had a small fryer or griddle, Slater's 50-50 (our favorite bacon-loving burger place) brought a massive grill to cook up their famous 50/50 burger patties and eggs.

They were even nice enough to make me one without a bun -which meant I got a whole burger to myself. Their burgers are 1/2 pound each after cooking and with a fried egg, two strips of thick-cut bacon and their bacon island dressing, I was stuffed before I could even eat the whole thing. The half-bacon and half-beef patty was so greasy that my paper plate was soaked with a quarter of an inch worth of grease before I even finished it.

For those who needed a break from the unlimited beer and bacon, there was a live music stage with ska, reggae and this odd band that had some of the most intense ukulele solos I've ever heard.

There were also fun carnival-style games like this strength-tester and a dunk tank with a toilet above it (you can see it in the background). Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the dunk tank.

Even drones were in on the fun and festivities.

San Diego is often named as one of the top beer cities in the world and we have over 100 breweries in the county with new ones popping up what seems like every weekend. With that in mind, it's hardly surprising that the breweries were out in force at the big event.

Not all of the local breweries limited themselves to beer though. Some, like Twisted Manzanita, also offer spirits.

National breweries also got involved, like the always popular Gordon Biersch.

As a cider fan though, I was most excited about Woodchuck Cider. There was also supposed to be a meadery, though they ended up cancelling last minute.

This gal knew that the festival was about and even had the socks to brag about it.

For those looking to take a little something home, there were all kinds of fun goodies available for purchase including pig noses and launchable pig toys.

There were a few more serious item vendors though, like this company selling coasters made from recycled bathroom tiles and beer bottle labels. There were also some cool tees.

Overall, the event was incredible and delicious -and though I might have just enjoyed about 5 pounds of bacon on Saturday, just writing this article is making me crave some more delectable swine-filled treats.
