What's in a name? In business, it's about power, growth and opportunity. As a result, mergers typically result in a one of the two original brands becoming a stronger and larger one. Comverse and Acision (News - Alert) are bucking that trend, this week launching as a brand new entity, Xura.



While text messaging is starting to decline among users as a result of over-the-top services such as WhatsApp, Line and others, the humble text message still has a prominent place in the lives of most mobile users. Businesses are recognizing this and taking advantage of text messaging.



Pushed by over-the-top providers such as WhatsApp, mobile voice services are starting to evolve again. What has been a somewhat stagnant area for innovation is heating up as carriers fend off the challenge posed by WhatsApp and others, and look for additional service revenue.



The foundation of the fourth wave of digital services is mash-ups between traditional, native network services like voice and texting, along with cool and useful app functionality. ADTRAN hopes to help service providers and organizations create these mashups with its new open API for service orchestration, customization and analytics.



Earlier this week, Research and Markets announced the addition of a new report from Signals and Systems Telecom Research (SNS Research). The report, that has been added to its offerings is titled The VoLTE (Voice over LTE) Ecosystem: 2015 - 2030 - Opportunities, Challenges, Strategies & Forecasts.



Mashup culture is not limited just to app developers; it also extends to consumer use of commercial media. Berlin-based app, Dubsmash, hopes to cash in on this trend by allowing consumers to easily mix smartphone video selfies with soundtracks and commercial recording overlays. A recent injection of $5.5 million in funding shows that others think Dubsmash can cash in on the trend, too.
