| Demand deforestation-free groceries. Tell CVS, Dollar General, Kroger, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods that there is no excuse to continue buying palm oil that could be destroying forests, polluting our air, and driving climate change. | ACTION ALERT Demand Deforestation-Free Groceries
Dear UCS supporter,
From Gold Emblem at CVS to 365 at Whole Foods, the store brand shampoo, snacks, and cleaning products in your shopping cart could be fueling climate change. That's because six out of the ten largest U.S. retailers—CVS, Dollar General, Kroger, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods—lack sufficient policies on palm oil, an ingredient in thousands of their products that many people use everyday.
Demand deforestation-free palm oil from these supermarkets, pharmacies, and discount stores.
Palm oil is responsible for tropical forest destruction, which not only drives climate change and shrinks habitat for endangered species, but also contributes to deadly haze from landscape fires. Palm oil producers in Southeast Asia often burn forests and destroy peatlands—swamps rich in carbon—to make way for new oil palm plantations, spreading debilitating smoke across the region. Air pollution from landscape fires claims 110,000 lives a year.
The good news is that palm oil can be grown without burning peatlands or forests. And thanks to demands from UCS supporters like you, many companies have committed to doing so—now it's time for these six companies to step up as well.
Tell CVS, Dollar General, Kroger, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods that there is no excuse to continue buying palm oil that could be destroying forests, polluting our air, and driving climate change. Sincerely,
Miriam Swaffer Outreach Coordinator Tropical Forest & Climate Initiative Union of Concerned Scientists
