CAPTAIN OLIMAR: POKEMON TRAINER!? - He Lives To Train

Posted: 19 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT

CAPTAIN OLIMAR: POKEMON TRAINER!? by OhHeyDJ

Captain Olimar was never so happy as when he was training pikmin to protect their planet, but the life of an astronaut means travelling to different worlds so he soon made his way to Earth. There he found the plants were merely plants, and people were extremely hard to train and even harder to control, so it seemed that life would not be as fun as it had been with the pikmin. But then he discovered a strange world of evolving monsters that fit in your pocket and discovered that he too wanted to catch em all. Pocket monsters weren't quite as obedient as pikmin, and some weren't quite as cute, but the arena battles were glorious and made tiny Captain Olimar feel like a mighty big guy!

You'll catch all the smiles and hi fives when you wear this CAPTAIN OLIMAR: POKEMON TRAINER!? t-shirt by OhHeyDJ, it's the stylish way to show the world you were born to be a trainer.

Disney Animals Drawn as Humans

Posted: 19 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT

The Tramp looks a bit rough, but Lady looks as prim and proper as ever. No matter what their species, they were destined to fall in love. This is one of several Disney anthropomorphizations by Alaina Bastain. She's taken animal characters from Disney animated movies and redrawn them as humans. She includes characters from Tarzan, Oliver and Company, Jungle Book, The Lion King, and more. You can view the rest at Bored Panda.

Baby koala Imogen at Symbio Wildlife Park in Helensburgh, New South Wales, Australia was being filmed as she was introduced into a newly built koala sanctuary. At first Imogen tested out one of the trees in her new enclosure, but she quickly realized that she didn't want to stray too far from the love of her nearby humans. The joey quickly went from climbing the tree to climbing the cameraman for a hug.

Enterprising College Student Starts a Luxury Restaurant in His Dorm Room

Posted: 19 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT

The ninth Rule of Acquisition states: "Opportunity plus instinct equals profit." Jonah Reider, a student at Columbia University in New York City, saw opportunity where other people didn't. He had room for a table for four people in his dorm room. He had access to a shared kitchen. He had excellent cooking skills. He combined these to form a new business: a restaurant.

Pith, as Reider's restaurant is called, is already booked through November. He calls it a supper club, which it technically is. Reider dines with his guests. But in an interview with Grubstreet, he discusses his goal to making a profit:

You're just charging for ingredients, and not turning a profit. Will that change?

That is great, but it’s also unsustainable. I don’t think I could continue, for a very long time, to spend two or three hours a day doing this, and just getting paid back for ingredients. As a student, it’s great, and I’m happy to do it. It’s such a good excuse to practice cooking. But I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to make this ever so slightly profitable. It’s so frustrating that eating in New York is so prohibitively expensive. Only a specific slice of the city gets to go out to eat. I don’t think that experience is what many people are looking for. It also doesn’t need to be a formal thing.

But look carefully at 2015. You’ll see characters from other fictional worlds. A lot of them! Blink and you might miss the TARDIS. The Ghostbusters ambulance is easier to catch, and all the townspeople seem to be from some movie or TV show. -Thanks, Monsieur Caron!

The Languages of Cats and Dogs

Posted: 19 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT

Los Angeles-based artist Lili Chin (featured previously at Neatorama) created posters entitled "Doggie Language" and "Cat Language." The prints illustrate various physical stances of canines and felines and offer interpretations of their meanings. Chin's "Doggie Language" print is done with a personal touch, as it stars her own Boston terrier named Boogie.

The artist's ascribed meanings to each pet posture were done with the input of professionals. For instance, the "Cat Language" poster was created using advice from staff at the Oregon Humane Society. Chin offers free downloads of these two posters and other illustrations on this page of her website. Visit the link to see the full versions of each poster as well as to check out Chin's other work. Mom Breaks World Record for Running a Marathon While Pushing a Baby in a Stroller

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT

(Photo: David Hartley)

Jessica Bruce, 32, has long been a marathoner. Her best time is 2 hours and 58 minutes. When she gave birth to baby Daniel 7 months ago, she didn't want to stop. So she began training while pushing a stroller.

Bruce recently put her new training to the test by running a marathon in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK. While pushing her baby in a stroller, she completed the marathon in 3 hours, 17 minutes, and 52 seconds. This beats the previous world record by 14 minutes.

Her husband ran alongside her. He fed the baby a bottle while they kept running. Although they brought along supplies for a diaper change, it was unnecessary. Baby Daniel slept for the first 20 miles, then relaxed for the remaining distance. You can read more about their run at the Daily Telegraph.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Movie Poster

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT

The official poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been released. Look at it! Look at it!

Let’s look closer. There’s Kylo Ren, the bad guy, lurking menacingly in the back. There’s tight-lipped Han and Leia, looking their age in galactic time, but pretty young compared to the actors’ ages (of course, all posters are airbrushed). There’s Finn, wielding a light saber. And in the middle, it’s Rey, with some kind of stick for a weapon, which diagonally lines up with the bad guy’s light saber. That must be intentional, but it’s also confusing. Scattered about are C-3PO, R2D2, BB8, Chewbacca, storm troopers, X-wings, and the Millennium Falcon. Also a rebel pilot and an alien of some sort. In the upper right... is that a Death Star? Well, yeah, it sure looks like one. So there’s every important element, ranked in descending order of importance by size.

The new trailer for the movie will be debuted tomorrow night during Monday Night Football. Of course, it will be on the internet immediately, so you don’t have to sit through the game if you don’t want to. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will open in theaters everywhere December 18. -via Uproxx

Corgi Puppy vs. Mini Pumpkin

Bilbo the nine-week-old corgi is facing down one of his first true puppy challenges: a mini pumpkin. What's a corgi pup to make of this bumpy, stripey orange meddler? Suspicion is certainly warranted. Giving the offending intruder a number of "I mean business" barks is appropos as well. Way to go, baby Bilbo!

Harry Houdini's Tips For The Budding Criminal

Nowadays becoming a criminal is as easy as learning how to hack into bank accounts or credit cards, but back in the good old days you had to physically steal cash and stuff for the heist to be considered successful.

That's why old school criminals looked up to master magician Harry Houdini, because he possessed skills that would have been incredibly handy for burglars, cutpurses, train robbers and the like.

(Image Link)

In 1906 Houdini published a book entitled The Right Way To Do Wrong that includes all kinds of highly regarded advice for lowly thieves, a book which was purportedly written to help fight crime but reads more like a criminal primer.

Houdini's book includes some creative and theatrical ideas such as:

use a prosthetic arm to avoid being detected while picking a pocket, walk backwards through the snow when committing a burglary so you appear to be moving away from your mark, and become a master of disguise if you decide to pursue a life of crime.

Six Ferrets and a Cat

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT

One of these things is not like the others. A family that had six male ferrets took in an abandoned 5-week-old kitten. They named her Komari, and the ferrets took to her like she was one of them.

Komari eventually grew to be bigger than any of the ferrets, but they still regard her as their little sister. See an adorable album of pictures of Komari and the ferrets at imgur. -via Daily of the Day

The Five Biggest Tech Myths Perpetuated by TV Shows and Movies

Movie and television shows are commonly critcized for their "Hollywood" presentations of certain issues and situations. If something in a film or television program is too far off the reality mark, there is generally backlash from the viewing public. One realm that is difficult to acurately portray in media presentations is computers and technology. There's never enough time in a movie or TV show for sufficient explanations of computer oriented tasks, nor to portray the length of time they typically take.

The article linked below lists five of the biggest technology myths perpetuated by TV and filmmakers, according to experts. The first myth cited regards security camera footage. To quote the article,

The Technique: “Cleaning Up” Security Footage
The Myth:
“Magnifying/enhancing” recordings can show police a detailed shot of a perp’s face.
As Seen In: Ocean's ElevenNCIS
The Expert:
Trevor Newton, sales director for Tyco Security, a company that makes surveillance cameras and equipment
The Reality:
“We call it the ‘CSI effect,’” Newton says. “Because whenCSI first came out, we’d go do a presentation, and people were like, 'Wow, I should be able to get these cool things,' and we have to be like, ‘No, that's not really reality.’ On TV, a casino, for example, can digitally zoom in and do all these magic things — and then suddenly, they can see a person's reflection in a spoon. That's not possible. [HD video] is about the number of pixels you're recording; like a still photo, you can only zoom in so much. And there's no way to fix that [afterward].”

But do they make cameras that are high-definition enough to catch the killer in a spoon’s reflection? Well, yes — but also no.

“Right now, technology doesn't allow those high-megapixel cameras to actually stream that information fast enough,” Newton explains. “There are different factors here. One is: How many pixels do I have? Then, how fast can that information be relayed back to the system to record it? It's really like trying to eat an elephant — when you have too much information, how fast can you actually eat that? How many frames can I swallow when there are so many pixels? With high-megapixel cameras, usually the frames per second is a lot slower. You can get a lot of information, but it won’t be fluid on the screen. In the case of real-life casinos, they kept analog cameras for a long time [because] they have regulations; security cameras need a certain frame rate for the fluidity. There are cameras that can stream faster, but they can’t use them because the images won’t be high-enough resolution.”

What Happened Here?

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

This couple went to get their portrait taken at a photography studio and look what happened. They fell into a fit of giggles and the photographer kept shooting! Or could it possibly be a photo booth sequence? The first automatic photo booth was exhibited at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889. Either way, this surviving sequence is priceless. What could have caused the descent from formal portrait into candid shots?

According to Stephen Hawking, Women Remain a Mystery

As one of the world's greatest astrophysicists, Stephen Hawking understands so many wonders of the universe. But he's just like us, amirite fellas?

Hawking, who has been married and divorced twice, recently did a reddit AMA interview. In it, one redditor asked him "What is the one mystery that you find most intriguing, and why?" The illustrious intellectual responded:

Women. My PA reminds me that although I have a PhD in physics women should remain a mystery.

Here's What Happens When One Tells Baron the German Shepherd They've "Had a Long Day"

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT

One wonderful trait of dogs is their ability to sense when humans need comfort and respond appropriately. If I cry, my two dogs immediately come to my side and cuddle up next to me. Such a reaction is common with pet dogs. Baron the German Shepherd is no different: when he gets the message that his human has "had a long day," he immediately reacts in a way that will comfort her. So what if he hits her up for a favor at the end? He's done his duty. Via Viral Nova
