Cool Vintage Photos of People Reading

Posted: 21 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT

There's nothing quite like a good book and that was especially true during the Great Depression where entertainment was short and disposable income was low. Seeing people read during those tough times provides both a look at their realities and their escapes from reality.

These awesome photos, featured on Flavorwire, show just how important books, magazines and newspapers were to keeping up morale and just passing the time.

Twelve Types of Cats

Posted: 21 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT

The Lingvistov brand of illustration (previously at Neatorama) evolved from the founding of an unusual, Skype-based English language school by two Russian linguistics teachers named Asia and Landysh. They not only sell their illustrations in various forms via their online store, but they use the "doodles" (as they refer to them) as resources as well.

Here they have illustrated twelve types of cats. See all twelve feline varieties at this user-submitted post at Bored Panda (a couple are named with mildly NSFW language).

Deep in Thought

Posted: 21 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT

The problem with trying to look busy is that you end up putting more effort into the appearance than into what you were supposed to be doing anyway. I do my best thinking out in the garden, when it appears I’m taking a break to pick vegetables or something… because thinking at a desk in front of a computer can turn your brain to mush. Now, if I can only think of a way to remember those wonderful ideas by the time I get back to the computer! This is the latest from CommitStrip.

For Sale: Canned Parrot

You may call it "sky rat," but we aficionados prefer the term "sky poultry." Hoodline, a news blog in San Francisco, reports that a new business is offering 2 different kinds of canned parrot. At least, that's what the signs in the yet unopened Terrific Street store claim.

The cans indicate that you can buy local and organic parrots that were caught in the wild. This may be the wild parrots of Telegraph Hill. Whether you prefer your parrots boiled or served with cherry syrup, Terrific Street has you covered.

Not everyone who lives in the neighborhood find the display funny. I don't either. It makes me hungry! You can see more photos at Hoodline.

How Back To The Future II Should Have Started

Posted: 21 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT

The folks at How It Should Have Ended looked at the film Back to the Future Part II and decided it needed a new beginning instead of a new ending.

(YouTube link)

Their thinking is explained at the YouTube page:

In the film, Back to the Future, the first time Doc tests the time machine is by sending his dog Einstein 1 minute into the future. Doc puts his dog in the car, drives it down the parking lot, and zap the car bursts into awesome flaming tire trails. Marty immediately thinks Doc killed his dog, because both the car and dog disappear. For a whole minute Einstein was missing until the DeLorean finally comes back from the past. This is why "Back to the Future 2" sending Marty into the future to see his own future children is impossible. When you travel into the future your timeline is you going into the future. A copy of you is not left behind to live on to 2015, so you can't go forward to see what your future self would be like. You would jump ahead to a world that lost you in 1985. People would think you had died. But that's not as fun of a story to tell is it.

There’s one problem with that. Einstein is a dog. He didn’t have the time or the knowledge, let alone the dexterity, to program the Delorean to go back to the past. Marty and Doc know how to program the time machine, so they can go where they want to in time. But the video is still funny. -via Viral Viral Videos

Little Girl Obsessed with CVS Gets CVS-Themed Birthday Party

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 11:00 PM PDT

It doesn't make sense to you or me, but to 4-year old Iris Gill, her local CVS convenience store and pharmacy is a "happy place" comparable with Disney World. For the past two years, she watched as the facility was built and then opened. She loves to visit.

So her mother, Sarah Fortune, threw her a CVS-themed birthday party. Iris's cake was with decorated with the CVS colors and typographic style. Party favors included white mints dispensed in prescription medicine bottles. Grown-ups got to drink Cranberry Vodka Splash (CVS, get it?) punch and everyone got to shop at the little toy register that Sarah set up for Iris and her friends. You can see more photos at Sarah Fortune's blog.

This kitten is clearly too small to jump the chasm between the chair and the table. But he keeps trying, and trying, and trying. Will he ever make it?

A cat with a bigger brain might have tried to find another way up to the table. This little guy is just stubborn -not that stubborness is always a bad thing. Perseverance and practice will get you to your goal. Eventually. Even if you have to grow up a little to make it. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

It's 1 of 24 perfect tattoos that people added to their bodies to show how much they love going back to the future.

The Pope Who Buried His Pet Elephant Under the Vatican

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Pope Leo X was elevated to the papal throne in 1513. One of his claims to fame was that he had a pet elephant named Hanno, the first elephant in Italy since the fall of the Roman Empire. It was a gift, which was expected in those times. National leaders from all over presented gifts to each new Pope, hoping for political favors, and the more magnificent and unusual the gift, all the better.

On the 70-mile journey from the Port of Hercules to Rome, Bedini wrote, “the caravan that was following behind daily increased in size, supplemented by workers from the towns, peasants from the fields, and gentlemen from their villas. All were curious, avidly seeking a view of the great animals and the strangers speaking a strange language who accompanied it.” The elephant had to spend the night in a piazza so that curiosity seekers wouldn't storm the stable it was supposed to stay in, and all along the way, wealthy noblemen tried to convince the elephant's handlers to take a detour to their castles.

Hanno arrived in Rome just before he was scheduled to appear before the Pope. And in his first official appearance, he made an equally dramatic impression. Walking through the streets of Rome adorned with handsome vestment and with a silver tower on his back, Hanno dropped to his dropped to his knees and bowed his head low upon reaching the Pope, before lifting back up to trumpet three times in the air. Then he sucked water into his trunk and sprayed water down on everyone assembled—including the Pope, who thought the whole of the elephant's performance delightful.

From that moment on, Hanno was Leo’s treasured pet. Read the story of Hanno and the Pope at Atlas Obscura.

Have Bela Lugosi And Boris Karloff Come Back From The Grave?!

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 07:00 PM PDT

The creatures of the night are crawling out of their dank graves and dark tombs to get us all in the Halloween mood, but you're safe (for now) because these aren't the real monsters we fear.

No, these are simply amazing sculptures by Mike Hill that look so realistic they make our skin crawl!

These incredibly lifelike sculptures celebrate the early years of monster movies, as well as paying homage to moments that changed the horror game, like Rick Baker's groundbreaking special effects work on An American Werewolf In London.

Mike Hill's sculptures really speak for themselves, but many of Mike's works deal with macabre subject matter so maybe "scream for themselves" is a more appropriate description!

Ryer the Otter Wants to Hit the Snooze Button

Often animals do things that relate to human behavior so well that it feels like we're more alike than different. There could be no better example than an animal who is awakened before he feels he's had sufficient sleep. Who among us doesn't know the feeling?

In this clip, Ryer the otter is awakened by one of his humans. It may not necessarily be a rude awakening, but that isn't the issue. This otter needs more shut-eye, and he's not afraid to say so in his grouchiest Otter Speak. Via Daily Dot

One Guy’s Reaction to the New Star Wars Trailer

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT

Fanboys are falling all over themselves over the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And this Instagram member is no exception. The caption to this video says it all.

THE TRAILER IS JUST EEEEPPPPPPPIIIIICCCCCCC! Star Wars is back! gaaaaaad laaaaard! You know what! Let me just relax because this kind God oooo! Lmao! Seriously congrats to everyone ! December 18th!

Except for one thing- he’s not just any Star Wars fan. This is John Boyega, the 23-year-old British actor who stars as Finn in the movie. Put yourself in his place: he was only 13 when the last movie came out, and we thought we’d never get another. Now he’s the lead actor in what will be a record-breaking film that gives his generation their own Star Wars mythology. After all the work is done, he now gets to enjoy the anticipation we're all feeling. I’d be excited, too! -via Buzzfeed

Dad Photobombs Daughter's Homecoming Photo

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Dads are mighty protective of their daughters, especially in regard to who their teenage daughters are allowed to date, so boys should expect to be given a hard time when they meet daddy.

This gentle, yet psychologically effective, ribbing usually involves jokes about papa's trusty shotgun and all the bad things that will happen if daddy's little girl is brought home late.

But is this daddy wasn't content with idle threats, he prefers the "scar them for life" technique:

Ricarra and her boyfriend thought their homecoming photo session would breeze by, since her pro photographer mother Sharee Schock was taking all the pics.

But then daddy came down and turned the whole thing into yet another awkward moment in two teenage lives, a moment they'll never live down since the pics have been posted to the internet. Thanks dad!

Sexy Gandalf Costume

Yes! And this is only the beginning. We need a leggy Gimli, a smokin' hot Balrog, and a coyly seductive Ent.

Tijtske Van Vark, 18, of Melbourne, Australia got to dress up for "Muck Up Day"--a traditional day for student pranks. She went as a different sort of Gandalf. Now I'd like to see Ian McKellen try it.

10 Facts About It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT

It’s an annual tradition to watch Charlie Brown receive rocks in his trick-or-treat bag and Linus mangle Halloween lore in the 1966 TV special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Now in it’s 50th year, you probably know the script by heart. But you might not know how much was riding on the success of the Halloween special, or other behind the scenes facts. Here’s your chance to find out.

2. THE VOICE OF VIOLET PUKED AFTER EVERY RECORDING SESSION.

It’s standard practice these days to use adult actors to mimic juvenile cartoon characters: adults are (presumably) better able to take direction and deliver a performance in line with the director’s wishes. But for many Peanuts specials, children were used to voice Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, and the rest. Anne Altieri, who portrayed both Violet and Frieda, was so nervous to be part of the show that she threw up every time she was done with a recording session.

5. THE MUSIC COMPOSER WAS FOUND NAKED BY COPS.

The jazzy scores of the early Peanuts specials were the work of composer Vince Guaraldi. When he was busy putting together “The Great Pumpkin Waltz” for the show, he decided to break for a shower. When he came out, he thought he heard noises outside and went to investigate, naked, and locked himself out in the process. Keyless, Guaraldi tried climbing a ladder to a second-floor window when cops spotted him. “Don’t shoot,” he said. “I’m the Great Pumpkin.” Police, who were many months away from getting the joke, let him back inside.

There’s more where that came from, in a trivia list about It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown at mental_floss. The show will air on ABC tonight and again on October 29th. Check your local listings for time and channel.

Ten Infamous Houses Of Murder

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT

What would you do if you found out that the closest-to-reality version of your dream house was on the market, you had the funds to purchase it, but a grisly murder (or several) had taken place there? Would you disregard any possible "bad vibes" and lay your money down? Would you make the deal, thinking the complex history would be a great conversation piece or might inspire dark creative forces? The latter is what Nine Inch Nails frontman and founder Trent Reznor did in the early 1990s, when he bought 10050 Cielo Drive (pictured above).

Otherwise known as a murder site chosen by Charles Manson, the sprawling ranch house in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles was rented by film director Roman Polanski and was where his wife Sharon Tate and five others were brutally stabbed and killed. As the world eventually learned during the trial, on August 9, 1969, members of Manson's “family” showed no mercy as the pregnant Tate and her friends begged for their lives. Manson instructed his followers to make the scene “as gruesome as you can,” and they complied dutifully, stabbing Tate sixteen times and writing "Pig" on the door of the house with her blood.

Perhaps to convince the public that the house could still be a homey and viable property, Hollywood agent Rudy Altobelli, the owner of the house, moved in several weeks after the murders and lived there for 20 years. Altobelli eventually sold the house for $1.6 million.

The last resident to inhabit 10050 Cielo Drive was Trent Reznor. He had a recording studio built there, which he named “Le Pig” after the Manson family's bloody scrawls. Reznor recorded The Downward Spiral there as well, which happens to have two tracks with the word "Pig" in their titles.

After a chance encounter and conversation with Sharon Tate's sister in which she asked Reznor if he was exploiting her sister's death, Reznor had a change of heart about the house and soon sold it. In the year following the sale,
the house was razed. A new mansion, given different Cielo Drive address numbers, was built in its place.

Beluga Whale Wows Navy Team With His Impression Of Human Chatter

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

I'm not sure if Noc the beluga whale has been watching too much human TV, or if it's a simple case of humans thinking everything sounds human, but Noc really has the whole chattering human routine down pat!

Noc was tamed by the United States Navy in the 1970s so he could help locate and retrieve sunken torpedos and mines, and he has not taken to working with humans like a fish out of water because he loves his human pals.

He likes his human friends so much that Noc even likes to play tricks on them, making divers think they've heard radio chatter telling them to get out of the water, with playful Noc laughing all the while.

If you'd like to read more about an amazing beluga named Noc check out this Smithsonian article from 2014, it's a whale of a tale and it's true!

Canada’s New Prime Minister

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT

Canada held their general election yesterday, and the new Prime Minister will be Justin Trudeau of Canada’s Liberal Party. Geeks Are Sexy took the opportunity to pull out a photograph of Trudeau being arrested by forces of the Galactic Empire at the 2012 Montreal Comic Con. Despite looking 14 years old in the picture, Trudeau is 43 (40 in this picture). Any comparisons between the Rebel Alliance and the Liberal Party will have to come from someone more familiar with Canadian politics.

16 Super Easy Kids Halloween Costumes You Can DIY

Posted: 20 Oct 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Halloween is our favorite time of the year, but it can be stressful, particularly for parents who don't have enough time or money to make or buy their little one the perfect costume. But you can make a pretty awesome costume for surprisingly little money and here are a few ideas for those who prefer to DIY over buy, but still want something pretty simple.

Russell from Up

A yellow hat, an orange scarf, a brown sash covered in badges and some hefty hiking boots can transform any boy into everyone's favorite Wilderness Explorer.

Windup Doll

Dress up your little cutie in his or her fanciest clothes, then add a gold-painted cardboard cutout of a windup key and you have an adorable little windup doll.

Wonder Woman

Every little girl is wonderful, but with a blue tutu, some felt stars and a Wonder Woman tee, she can actually become Wonder Woman as well. Throw in a tiara and wrist cuffs on older girls and you've got a full, fashionable ensemble.

Clark Kent

Similarly, for a great Superman costume for your super little guy, just get a Superman tee with a cape and then hide it under a mostly unbuttoned tee, tie and black pants. Throw on some geeky glasses and you've got a hero in disguise in no time.

Ace Ventura

Got a tutu, a Hawaiian shirt and some hair gel? Then you have what you need to make an awesome Ace Ventura costume.

Monopoly Costumes

A white outfit and a simple white hat can easily be made into a prisoner costume with a little black electrical tape. Add a cardboard cutout resembling Monopoly's famous jail space and you have a perfect costume. As for Uncle Pennybags, any boys who have recently been a ring bearer can put their tuxedo to use again by adding a mustache, a cane, a red tie and a top hat for a perfect Uncle Pennybags costume.

Bob Ross

There are tons of Bob Ross costumes out there for kids, which makes sense because he's a great role model for them and the costume is incredibly simple -all you need is a curly wig and a fake beard or makeup to paint on a beard. This Bob Ross costume takes it to the next level with a trick or treat bag featuring a framed painting of a happy little tree.

Miss Piggy

A plastic pig nose, a headband with some basic pig ears and a fabulous fashion sense are all you need to create a delightful Miss Piggy costume that would leave certain pigs swooning.

Strong Man

This vintage-inspired costume is entirely too adorable and surprisingly simple. Just use two black balloons and a dowel to make the barbell and two plastic balls to create those bulging muscles.

Popcorn Bag

Glue some popcorn onto a beanie and some white felt and red felt stripes on a baby Bjorn and your cute little one can be some delicious, buttery popcorn.

Lamb

Is your little sweetie an absolute lamb? Then prove it with this simple costume courtesy of Real Simple. All it takes is white clothes, a black hat, black felt and cotton balls.

Jedis

A large white shirt, a ribbon belt and light leggings or sweat pants make a great base for a Jedi costume. If you're going for a Leia, you can either do her hair up in two buns or put on a hat with two pre-made buns, and for a Luke, add a karate jaket. Then grab some toy light sabers and you're ready to go.

LEGO

If you have paint, a cardboard box and some plastic cups, you have all you need to make a LEGO costume -and many children will be beyond thrilled to get such a simple costume as well.

Ducky

This Real Simple tutorial shows just how simple it is to make your little critter into a fluffy duckling -all you need is a feather boa, some yellow clothes, a yellow hat and matching rain boots.

Shadows

Get a black morph suit, add black accessories that look like things your kids normally wear and viola -you have your kid's shadow.

Shark

Everyone loves a scary shark, but who knew it was so incredibly easy to make a great costume for your little critter? All it takes is some hot glue, felt and a hoodie.
