| Posted: 25 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT The idea behind “trick or treat” is the implied threat of playing tricks on a homeowner if the treats aren’t given. That’s extortion, but it's a big part of how we celebrate Halloween. We often don't explain it that way to our kids. But Nana the border collie (previously at Neatorama) has a better technique, the “trick for treat”! She goes to a neighbor in her ladybug costume and performs her best tricks to earn treats. -via Tastefully Offensive | ||||||||
| The Most Venomous Animal in the World Is a Snail Posted: 25 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT There are snakes that can kill you with a single bite and scorpions that can take you out with just one sting. But none of them have venom with the killing power of a snail. The geography cone snail (Conus geographus) has a toxin so powerful that a lethal dose for a human is just 0.029-0.038 milligrams. There have been only 36 recorded human fatalities from it since 1670. That's because the geography cone snail lives in the ocean. But its unique venom delivery system is capable of penetrating the wetsuits of any humans foolish enough to get too close. BBC Earth reports:

| Posted: 25 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT Quick- think of all the movies you know that feature worms. Those will probably be the movies included in this supercut from Atlas Obscura. They start out small and cute, but the cuteness goes away pretty quickly. What’s left is an ever-growing menace of slithery, hungry, enormous cinematic worms! | ||||||||
| Scientists: Comet Contains Alcohol and Sugar Posted: 24 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT
Don't break out your cocktail shakers yet, though. Scientists using a radio telescope at the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique in Sierra Nevada, Spain found that Comet Lovejoy contains two basic building blocks of life: alcohol and sugar. Specifically, ethyl alcohol and glycolaldehyde. Comets often contain the earliest identifiable materials from the formation of a solar system, so these findings give us important information about the early history of our solar system. Astrophysicist Dominique Bockelée-Morvan told the AFP:

| Ten Horror Film Shorts to Creep You Out in Under Five Minutes Posted: 24 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT Everyone has their own idea of what is scary when it comes to horror on film. Some people need to see violence, blood and guts to get their blood pumping. Others like a good psychological thriller. Some like realism; a tale of a murderous stalker, for instance, that could actually happen. Some like tales of the supernatural that require a fair amount of suspension of disbelief. | ||||||||

| Man Who Was Never Born Fathers a Child Posted: 24 Oct 2015 06:00 PM PDT A couple had a child with fertility assistance, but later found out that the child’s blood type did not match either parent. A paternity test, using cheek swabs, determined that the man was not the father of the baby. The couple had more tests, and was prepared to sue the fertility clinic. Then they did a genetic test through 23andMe, which tests many more markers than a standard paternity test in order to establish genetic ties in extended families. That test said the man was the baby’s uncle!
However, since the cells of his lost twin brother are a part of him, he is still the father. The case shows how a person cannot be defined by their DNA. About one in eight single-child births start out as multiple pregnancies, so chimerism is probably more common than we know. Most people have no reason to suspect they have more than one kind of DNA, or to have tests done. But there have been some spectacular cases of chimerism in the news since DNA testing began. Read about them, and about the case described here, at Buzzfeed.

| Posted: 24 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT The best part of the official trailer for The Force Awakens is the part where Han Solo assures Finn and Rey that the stories they’ve heard are true. What must he be thinking when he says that? Nick Skywalk remixed the trailer with clips from other films to make “those stories about what happened” real, to Solo and to us, which just makes looking forward to the new movie more exciting. This is really well done. -via Uproxx | ||||||||
| The Shining Hotel May Be Turned into a $24 Million Museum of Horror Posted: 24 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT
The hotel that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining may become a $24 million, 43,000-square-foot horror film center and museum, if funds can be raised by the principals. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado recently announced that plan, upon which the Denver Business Journal reported. According to the projects' organizers, the proposed building, to be named the "Stanley Film Center," would house "multiple indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, including a 500-seat auditorium; a 30,000-square-foot interactive museum and discovery center that would feature rotating exhibits; a 3,000 square-foot soundstage; classrooms and workshop spaces; and post-production and editing suites." See illustrated plans for the proposed center and learn more on the story via the Denver Business Journal. Via i09
| 10 Creepy Cool Monster Themed Cartoon Shows Posted: 24 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT Monster themed stuff has always been the coolest, and monster themed cartoon shows brought that classic monster movie cool to the boob tube in a bold way. The toon incarnations of our favorite movie monsters such as the Wolfman, Count Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster showed us there was much more to dig about those crazy monsters! 1. Groovie Goolies (1970-72)- The Groovie Goolies could have easily existed in the same cartoon universe as Scooby Doo and the gang, but surprisingly it was actually a spin-off of The Sabrina the Teenage Witch Show. With Drac on the organ, Frankie on drums and Wolfie on lead guitar-like instrument, the Groovie Goolies were totally hip and always ready to rock the stage for the fine freaks who called Horrible Hall home. 2. The Addams Family (1992-93)- While they're not technically monsters like their creepy neighbors The Munsters, The Addams Family are creepy and kooky enough to be considered honorary monsters. Riding high on their comeback thanks to the success of the movie adaptations, The Addams Family finally received a well-deserved animated series and introduced a whole new generation to the first family of the macabre. 3. Teen Wolf (1986-88)- Many classic '80s movies were transformed into animated series, but Teen Wolf stayed true to the movie and gave us a glimpse into the home life of the Wolf. With his average middle class lycanthropic family at his side, Scott Howard tries to tackle his teen years without wolfing out every time he gets overexcited. The show was okay, but the intro was totally radical! They have tried to kill Count Duckula many times, but thanks to a mystic ritual he is brought back to life ready to suck blood and quack corny vampire jokes. But something went wrong with the spell, and the latest incarnation of Duckula is corny indeed- because he's a vegetarian! 5. Toonsylvania (1998-2000)- Toonsylvania aired as part of the Fox Kids "No Yell Motel" block, which included Eerie, Indiana and Goosebumps, but unlike those shows there's nothing serious about Toonsylvania. Using a comedic formula similar to Animaniacs, Steven Spielberg produced this show about Dr. Frankenstein, Igor and a dim-witted monster named Phil, but it didn't make audiences scream so Toonsylvania didn't live long. (YouTube Link)6. Gravedale High (1990-91)- Rick Moranis stars as the only human teacher at Gravedale High, a school for monsters. Descended from classic movie monsters, the students are a real pain in the neck for Rick's character Maxwell, but they also teach him a thing or two about tolerance. 7. Aaahh! Real Monsters (1994-97)- Aaahh! Real Monsters was a show about three monster students learning how to properly frighten humans from The Gromble, revealing how creepy monsters live on the fringe of human society. And while one of the main character designs is questionable, the show was full of innovative and original monster designs that were part Tim Burton, part Rat Fink, all crazy and cool! 8. The Milton The Monster Show (1965-68)- The Milton the Monster Show revealed the gentler side of monsterdom, serving as an animated gateway to monster movie madness for little creature feature creeps-in-training. Milton was created by Professor Weirdo, who added too much tenderness to the mix thanks to bumbling old Count Kook, and he teaches his fellow monsters there's more to life than scares and screams. 9. Monster Force (1994)- It's the far off future year of 2020, and Count Dracula and his Creatures Of The Night are still raising hell around the world, but a group of college students with high tech weaponry are ready for a fight. The Monster Force fight Universal Monsters such as the Creature From The Black Lagoon, Im-Ho-Tep the Mummy and Bela the Werewolf, using their EMACS (Energized Monster Armed Containment Suit) power suits to match the monster's power levels. 10. The Drak Pack (1980-82)- Dracula is sometimes pure evil, sometimes misunderstood, but always a leader among monsters. This time around Drak Jr. leads his fellow monsters Frankie and Howler on a crusade to right the wrongs done by their dreadful ancestors. They become supernatural superheroes, monsters who masquerade as normal humans until the "Drak Whack" reveals their true forms and they spring into action. This Halloween, forget all the kids and candy and spend some time with your favorite monsters, you'll be glad you did! | ||||||||
| The Longest Challah in the World is 20 Feet Long Posted: 24 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT
The Shabbos Project was a plan to conduct a single, simultaneously celebrated Sabbath meal on Friday, October 23. Jews from around the world participated. To create a symbol for this massive event, project leaders conceived of baking the longest challah in the world. After locating a 20-foot long oven in Brooklyn, volunteers prepared a six-stranded loaf, which has earned a Guinness World Record as the longest braided bread in the world. Tess Cutler writes for Tablet magazine:

| Deluxe Homemade Toddler Kitchen Posted: 24 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT Andrew Hook made an awesome pretend kitchen as a gift for his son’s second birthday. It started out as an old entertainment center from Goodwill. Hook replaced the door glass with plywood covered in chalkboard paint. The sink is a metal dog dish. And the burners actually work! Well, they don’t get hot, but they light up from coils of Electroluminescent wire that turn on and off with the stove knobs. See the entire build process in an album at imgur. Oh yeah, his son certainly loved the gift. You see these used entertainment centers in thrift stores all the time, because 1. they’re cheap (so you may as well buy a new one for the living room), 2. as TVs get bigger and flatter, the cabinets become obsolete, and 3. used entertainment centers don’t sell as fast as necessary items like beds and dressers. However, their size and shape makes them perfect for a toddler’s pretend kitchen. Several other redditors shared their entertainment center conversions. Redditor diggexpat found an entertainment center with a DVD storage cabinet on the side. Enzo loved it. Redditor cwagdev made one as well. I think he used the original doors turned sideways, but they sure look like stainless steel now! Redditor flowebb’s sister made one, too. With gas burners. Redditor _as_you_wish_ made one for his son, Odin. I could use lighting like that over my sink. |
