| This Woman Can Smell Parkinson's Disease Posted: 28 Oct 2015 04:00 AM PDT
Before her late husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, Joy Milne detected an odd smell coming from him. She tells the BBC:
Scientists at Edinburgh University decided to test her. They recruited 6 people with Parkinson's and 6 without and asked Milne to smell t-shirts they had worn for a day. Milne scored an impressive 11 out of 12. The scientists were already impressed. But then Milne insisted that one of the test subjects really did smell of Parkinson's, even though he was in the control group. 8 months later, that person was diagnosed with Parkinson's. How does she do it? There may be something going on in the skin of a Parkinson's patient:

| The First Person Ever to Run a Marathon Without Talking About It Posted: 28 Oct 2015 03:00 AM PDT "She never mentioned anything... but I started to notice a pattern. Six runs a week. A long run every weekend... suddenly it just hit me: she was going to be the first person to run a marathon without telling anyone about it." Her husband's mind was blown. How could it be possible for anyone to run a marathon without telling anyone? Watch this fascinating and inspiring footage to understand how this could ever happen. Via Laughing Squid | ||||||||
| Interactive Map of James Bond's Travel Destinations Posted: 28 Oct 2015 02:00 AM PDT Agent 007 has travel all over the world while working for the UK's Secret Intelligence Service. The latest film, Spectre, takes James Bond to Austria, Italy, and Morocco. These may be great journeys for us, but for Bond, it's just another day at the office. The Guardian offers an interactive map that shows where James Bond has traveled over the course of his 23 movies. It does not include space, where Bond spent some time in Moonraker. And, of course, it does not include any of his travels that remain classified. -via Marilyn Bellamy | ||||||||

| As Large Animals Disappear, The Loss of Their Poop Hurts the Planet Posted: 28 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT
Animals eat, wander, then excrete. Their excretions contain essential fertilizers, notably phosphorus. Otherwise, the distribution of phosphorus tends to follow gravity and get washed into the ocean. There are fewer large animals today then in centuries past, especially fewer wild large animals. Most large domesticated species, such as cattle, are fenced in. This impairs the spread of manure-sourced nutrients. Chris Doughty of Oxford University explained to the Washington Post that this trend could make it harder to find phosphorus in the future:
The loss of whale poop is especially bad:

| Happy Little Groots - The Art Of Friendship Posted: 27 Oct 2015 10:35 PM PDT Happy Little Groots by Taylor Rose Bob Raccoon used to go by the name Rocket, back when he was a bad little mammal with a tendency to get into scrapes all across the galaxy. Rocket was a hothead, an angry little furball who would rather shoot down the problem than discuss it rationally, and Rocket's temper burned bright. But then one day his buddy Groot introduced him to a marvel-ous leaf that made all skies look bright blue and all trees seem happy, and since raccoons are rather fond of trees this life altering leaf made him giddy. He decided it was time to retire the name Rocket and go back to his real first name, which was Bob, and he swore from that day forward he would wield a paintbrush instead of a plasma cannon... Add some painterly style to your geeky wardrobe with this Happy Little Groots t-shirt by Taylor Rose, it's the colorful way to show love for your favorite Guardian! Visit Taylor Rose's Facebook fan page, official website, Tumblr and Twitter, then head on over to her NeatoShop for more wonderfully geeky designs:

Allie doesn't know that yet, but Ele the baby elephant will teach her. This is how you cuddle. At just 2 weeks old, she's already an expert. Hopefully Allie will return for even more cuddles when Ele is full grown! -via Tastefully Offensive

The last words of famous people are of great interest to the public, as well as often hotly debated. In some cases, published reports vary. The linked collection of celebrities' last words is no exception. There, John Lennon's reported last words differ from this account by Eddie Dezeen, the latter of which is likely more accurate, since it's based on words Lennon supposedly spoke to paramedics in the ambulance. The words ascribed to Walt Disney have also been a source of contention, a story on which this article elaborates. Maybe in the end, the words uttered during the final firing of the brain's synapses before death are given more weight and meaning than they should. Even so, it's likely that people will always be curious. See the linked collection of last words, including Bob Marley, Joe DiMaggio, Malcolm X, James Dean, Joan Crawford and others at Vintage Everyday.
| Heroic Bus Driver Saves Woman from Jumping off Bridge Posted: 27 Oct 2015 08:00 PM PDT This bridge in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, is 230 feet above the surface of the Yangtze River. Bian Peng, a bus driver, noticed as he drove over the bridge that a woman had climbed over the railing and was about to drop down to her death in the water. At the 0:26 point in this video, Peng stops his bus, leaps from the door, and wrestles the woman down from the railing. She screams "Let me die!" Another man helps subdue her. Passengers from the bus drag her inside. Peng gets back in the driver's seat and takes the woman to the police. -via Rocket News 24 | ||||||||
| Digger for Hire: Halloween Special Posted: 27 Oct 2015 07:00 PM PDT Kurt Richter took this picture of the construction site near his home. The heavy equipment crew has a sense of humor! | The Haunting Of Meatloaf Will Leave A Cheesy Taste In Your Mouth Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:00 PM PDT Meatloaf isn't the first name that comes to mind at the mention of horror and the supernatural, unless you're a big fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and adore his performance as Eddie. But Meatloaf's association with the supernatural doesn't begin or end with Rocky Horror, because while he and Todd Rundgren were recording the iconic album Bat Out Of Hell Meat met a ghost. Meatloaf revealed his brush with one of the afterlife's resident spooks on the Lifetime Movie Network show The Haunting Of, and the tale is every bit as cheesy at it sounds.

| Posted: 27 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT Once upon a time, you didn’t think about a movie until it reached your local theater. And that was a good thing, because they didn't play in small towns until months after the official release. Then as theaters expanded, you’d see trailers on TV a couple of weeks before the movie opened, and that was the first you heard of it. Now, we get every scrap of film development on the internet years ahead of time. And for a fan, it’s not easy to wait for the finished product. You might think this is about The Force Awakens, but it also applies to the Marvel universe films, Star Trek, or any number of popular film franchises. Sadly, it also applies to TV shows, video games, and books. We get teased too much about them before we ever get a chance to try them out. -via Tastefully Offensive | ||||||||
| 2 Spider Species Named after Spider-Man Actors Posted: 27 Oct 2015 01:00 PM PDT
Two actors have donned the red mask in recent years: Tobey Maguire in 2002 and Andrew Garfield in 2012. To honor their work, scientists recently named two real webslingers after them. The Filistata maguirei and Pritha garfieli are newly-discovered species that live in Iran. | Watch A Samurai Slice A Baseball Flying At 100 MPH In Half Posted: 27 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT Samurai warriors trained to strike with precision, defend themselves when the fight stretched on and, most impressive visually, unsheath their katana and strike in the blink of an eye. With a flash a well trained samurai can cut down a foe, or a flying baseball, while making their katana magic look way too easy.
Modern day samurai warrior Isao Machii demonstrated his considerable skills with the sword for Oricon News by slicing a baseball clocked at 100 miles per hour in half with a lightning quick katana strike. Note to the MLB- baseball needs more swords! -Via GeekTyrant
| How Long Would it Take for Vampires to Annihilate Humanity? Posted: 27 Oct 2015 11:00 AM PDT If a vampire must feed on human blood, how long would it take a certain number of vampires to wipe out the human population? And if those human victims then turned to vampires, how soon would vampires outnumber humans? Mathematical modeling turned to the world of the supernatural as a surprising number of researchers have tackled the complexities of human and vampire coexistence. A 1982 paper by Richard Hartl and Alexander Mehlmann titled "The Transylvanian Problem of Renewable Resources" took a look at how vampires would affect the human population.
However, a 2007 article modeled a vampire apocalypse and concluded that “vampires would eliminate humans within three years.” Which provoked a refutation in 2008. More research has been done, but the results vary according to which vampire mythology one ascribes to. Are the vampires in Bram Stoker’s universe more dangerous than those in Anne Rice’s universe? What about the vampires in the worlds of Twilight or The Historian? Read an overview of the available research at Atlas Obscura.
| Ten DIY Tutorials Inspired By The Walking Dead Posted: 27 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT This year fans of The Walking Dead, and those who appreciate a good zombie tale no matter the franchise, will be wanting to celebrate the spookiest holiday of them all in undead style. So here's ten tutorials to help you have a Walking Dead themed night of fun this Halloween! 1. Zombie Makeup Tutorial- Greg Nicotero is one of the industry's leading special effects artists, and with his guidance The Walking Dead makeup crew keeps their undead cast looking extra rotten and gross. If you're joining the rotting masses this Halloween check out this zombie makeup tutorial by Greg Nicotero, where you'll learn the old tissue and liquid latex trick to make realistic looking rotten flesh. 2. Corpse Rising From The Grave Costume- Now that you have the makeup covered you need an actual costume, and this stylish yet oh so easy to make corpse rising from the dead costume by Heather Green of Paint Pal is sure to lift some spirits this Halloween! 3. Daryl's Ear Necklace Cookies- What's a costume and makeup without a horrifying prop? Now you can make an accessory that looks disgusting but is actually delicious thanks to this tutorial by Mike from Semi Sweet that teaches you how to make the sugar cookie version of Daryl's Ear Necklace. Mmmmm....disturbing! If the cookies weren't enough to feed the hungry zombie horde invading your happy home you might want to have a batch of edible zombie eyes on hand. They're basically just gross looking green deviled eggs, but your guests can pretend they're chowing down on a plate full of eyeballs and complete their Walking Dead experience. 5. The Governor's Fishtank- Your guests will need something to stare at while they're mindlessly chewing, so keep them entranced with your very own version of The Governor's Fish Tank, the most "aaaaaaah!" inspiring Halloween prop ever! 6. Deliciously Disgusting Brain Cake- Your guests cannot live on ear cookies and eyeball eggs alone, and since they're currently dressed like zombies (or they're actually undead and trying to blend in with the warmies) they'll probably appreciate a slice of brain. But serving actual brain is a bad idea, so serve them some delicious brain cake instead! It's red velvet with raspberry "blood" filling, sure to satisfy even the most morbid munchers. 7. Zombie Barbie Dolls- If you want to make your Halloween party feel like a standing room only affair, then create your own horde of zombified Barbie dolls and populate the party with plastic bodies! Amanda Formaro of Crafts by Amanda will walk you through the fairly simple process of painting and putrefying everyone's favorite fashion doll, which kids will probably fear but Walking Dead fans will totally eat up! 8. Yard Zombies- A post-apocalyptic house is not a home without a few rotten zombies lurking around the yard, so grab some plywood, paint and PVC pipe and populate your property with The Walking Dead. 9. Official Walking Dead Holiday Greeting Cards- Thank your rotten guests for not making too big a mess with a fun, and officially licensed, The Walking Dead holiday greeting card. They look ordinary on the outside but inside there's an illustration from The Walking Dead comic and an appropriately apocalyptic message, coming to you courtesy of Skybound and The Walking Dead. 10. The Walking Dead Georgia Adventure DIY Tour- When you're done Halloweening and you're ready to do some zombified shambling outdoors, oh, and you happen to be in Georgia where they film much of The Walking Dead, then you're ready for a DIY Adventure! Let Rachelle of Strut Your Stroller guide you to some of the locations seen on the show, like the Governor's town of Woodbury (which is actually Senoia, Georgia), or Big Jake's (the Southern Country Steak House) as seen in Season 3 episode 15. Rachelle even created a Google map of the adventure so you can give yourself the grand tour! | ||||||||

The elections in Ukraine are contentious enough between the pro-Russian and anti-Russian factions, but now they’ve gone and arrested Chewbacca! The Wookiee was accompanying mayoral candidate Darth Vader to a polling place.
Other sources report that the offense was campaigning on election day. This Darth Vader is one of several people who have campaigned under the name while running for office under Ukraine’s Internet Party in the past few years. Some races have included Padme Amidala, Yoda, and Chewbacca. The party is also responsible for the new Darth Vader statue in Odessa.
| Posted: 27 Oct 2015 09:00 AM PDT I remember that after one of my pet rabbits died, the other rabbit, in a shocking display of strength, ripped the door off her cage and went out looking for him. She scoured our apartment, searching for her lost mate. She was, in her own way, mourning him. Or am I just projecting? Joe Hanson, a biologist and the host of the PBS program It's Okay to Be Smart, reviews the evidence. For a long time, scientists assumed that only humans could mourn because only humans could intellectually grasp death. But now it's clear that crows, chimpanzees, and elephants mourn in some capacity. Zoologists noticed that when one elephant under observation died, her family stopped and lingered near her for a while. For several days, five other groups stopped by and visited her body--even when doing so placed them in danger from predators. | ||||||||

| How the Army Handled Cultural Sensitivity Training during World War II Posted: 27 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT During World War II, millions of Americans who had never travelled beyond their own states were, in short order, trained and sent far away to foreign lands filled with people very different from themselves. So the Army published a series of guidebooks that taught the Americans how they should conduct themselves in ways that would leave the natives with the right impression. These books included the nations of France, Britain, Australia, Germany, Iran, and Iraq. (Images: US Army/Amazon.com) They included helpful pointers on etiquette. For example, don't slap an Iraqi on the back. You may think of it as a friendly gesture, but the average Iraqi won't. You can read more about these guides at Atlas Obscura. -via VA Viper | ||||||||

| 17 Totally Over-The-Top Halloween Costumes Posted: 27 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT Last year we brought you some easy last minute costumes and this year we also had some ideas for simple DIY kid's costumes, but if you're looking for something a little more inspirational -even if it's only to awe at, we've got you covered there too. Photo StripI'm willing to bet not many of you have seen someone pull off a costume like this. Brooklyn resident Serra used a lot of ingenuity to get this costume together, but the end effect was delightful and entirely unique. Dragon DogThis dragon dog is just about as epic as epic can get -he almost looks like he's ready to breathe fire. Batman in the BatmobileWheelchairs often provide dedicated costume-makers with so much more to work with. Need proof? Just check out this amazing Batmobile that Connor's mother Karen made out of his wheel chair. Hiccup and ToothlessFor more proof of just how much a wheel chair can add to a costume, check out this amazing Toothless wheelchair created for little Hiccup by the non-profit Magic Wheelchair. Cinderella in her CarriageWhen a little one is of a certain age, sometimes you just don't want to take him or her trick or treating without a stroller -but it kind of ruins the effect of a Cinderella when you put your princess back in a modern-day stroller. That's why Danielle of La Port City, IA opted to turn her simple stroller into a magic coach fit for a princess. Work Loader From AliensSimilarly, if you're going to rock a baby Bjorn all night, you might as well make it count -and this brilliant costume by a friend of Redditor rdt156 has to be one of the most clever uses of a baby carrier ever. Pinocchio & GepettoIt's not every day you see a Pinocchio that's more alive than Gepetto, but how could anyone not love this brilliant costume by Costume Works user Arlene? Titanic VictimRob Parisi's impressive frozen makeup paired with a period costume and a perfect life preserver emblazoned with the doomed ship's name make this a delightfully chilling costume. Little Miss MuffetIt may be a popular nursery rhyme, but Little Miss Muffet isn't much of a scary story to those without a major case of arachnophobia. But when Miss Muffet is bitten and becomes a half-human, half-spider mutant, things get a lot more interesting as you can see in this makeup by Aryes Kelle. MichonnePixel the pug is bound to survive any upcoming zombie apocalypse. She's been training with a little guidance from her favorite Walking Dead character. Little MonstersHey may not have been born when it came out, but that doesn't make this little dude's Maurice costume from the movie Little Monsters any less awesome. Eliza DoolittleIf there's anything better than seeing someone wonder around in a My Fair Lady costume, it's when that person just happens to be an adorable little girl. DisneylandIt takes a lot of dedication, time, effort and neck muscle to pull off a costume like this, but Rob Cockerham of Cockeyed was just the man for the job. DalekThere are plenty of people rolling around in Dalek costumes these days, but not many of them actually expose the creatures inside. This amazing costume is by Costume Works reader Michelle and we're in awe of her impressive handiwork. TARDIS FaceThis cool Doctor Who makeup by Katie Alves looks cool enough under the light, but with a black light, it looks truly over the top -something The Doctor himself would be in awe of. KrangNot many men would feel comfortable walking around with this much skin on display, but Redditor guimancreative is not most men and we thank him for it because this Krang costume is pretty much amazing -the interior Krang section even lights up! Alien ControlIt's one thing to say your mind is being controlled by an alien, it's another to say that an alien has commandeered your body for his own sinister purposes -which is precisely what this delightfully creepy mask seems to suggest. Have you seen any crazy costumes that made your jaw drop? Share your pictures and stories in the comments. |
