| BREAKING: Trans-Pacific Partnership Text Released
Tell Your Members of Congress to Vote NO on the Largest, Pro-Corporate Trade Deal Ever Dear Indiana,
This morning, President Obama finally released the full text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) — the largest trade deal in history. The deal was negotiated by hundreds of "advisers" from some of the world's most powerful corporations, while the public has been shut out. The text is worse than we thought.
Tell your members of Congress: Vote NO on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The TPP will accelerate job losses and economic inequality, hurt workers and our environment, and put our food and water at risk.
The language is more aggressive than previous trade deals, giving corporations even more power. Countries and foreign corporations could challenge democratically enacted laws in the U.S. using new provisions snuck into the TPP by big business. Corporations can even sue the U.S. government for putting regulations in place that hurt their expected profits.
We can't afford to give corporations even more power to undermine our democracy.
What does the TPP mean for my food and water? - Risky food imports — The TPP gives corporations new powers to second-guess food safety inspectors and push questionable imported food into the U.S. — especially for chemical- and antibiotic-tainted farm-raised shrimp and catfish.
- Weakened food safety rules — The deal opens the door to allow foreign countries, big agribusiness and food companies to attack sensible food safety rules and block efforts to strengthen U.S. food safety standards.
- More fracking — The TPP would allow companies to shortcut the approval process to export fracked gas abroad and to challenge local fracking bans. Both mean more fracking here at home, leaving more communities here to deal with polluted drinking water, the negative health effects and the devastation that fracking leaves behind.
- No food labels — The deal makes it even easier for multinational food corporations to hide what's in your food by challenging genetically engineered (GMO) food labeling and country of origin labeling (COOL).
From what we've seen so far, it is abundantly clear — the TPP was made to benefit multinational corporations, not people like you and me.
Tell your members of Congress: Vote NO on the TPP.
As I write you, our policy staff are poring over the 1,000+ page document. We will keep you posted on the latest and continue to give you opportunities to weigh in at key points. We have a challenge ahead of us, but we still have a chance to stop this bad deal. Take action to reject the TPP.
It is long past time for Congress to stand up for workers, the environment and public health and to reject these corporate trade deals designed to boost the profits of multinational corporations.
