Oliver Pollock: The Man Who Invented the Dollar Sign

Posted: 24 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

(Photo: Thomas E. Jacks/Find-a-Grave)

The cause of the American Revolution was frequently short of men, commonly short of arms and other military supplies, and almost always deprived of cash. Wars--especially wars against great powers such as the United Kingdom--are expensive. Oliver Pollock, an Irish merchant based in Spanish-controlled New Orleans, helped the nascent American government fund its war efforts. During his struggle to back the Americans, he accidentally invented the dollar sign ($).

Dan Hess of Atlas Obscura traces the life of Pollock and his extraordinary efforts on behalf of the American cause. Not only did Pollock help fund the revolutionaries at his own expense, his diplomatic efforts were essential to getting Spain active in the war and ensuring the success of expeditions to capture the Trans-Appalachian West.

After the war ended, Pollock wanted his money back and asked Congress to make good on its debts to him. His notes include the first use of the dollar sign:

“Pollock...entered the abbreviation ‘ps’ by the figures for ‘peso.’ Because Pollock recorded these Spanish “dollars” or “pesos” as ‘ps” and because he tended to run both letters together, the resulting symbol resembled a ‘$,’” says Jim Woodrick, the Historic Preservation Division Director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

That’s it. Historians have analyzed the source of the $ symbol and have yet to find it written down prior to Pollock’s use in his ledgers. His unintentional creation is supported by the fact that Robert Morris chose to adopt the symbol and by 1797 had it cast in type in Philadelphia as the official symbol for new nation’s own currency.

Other historians that I've found cautiously corroboratethis claim.

Vault Girl Fallout 4 by Vaiolet

The Vault-Tec folks were looking for a spokesperson to serve as the face of their latest underground habitats, but all they could find were slag faced Super mutants and scummy desperadoes. But then little Annie from Vault 111 walked into the room and wowed them all with her form fitting jumpsuit. The Vault-Tec folks loved her smile, which was warmer than midday in the Mojave, and they adored her hair, styled by a very gifted Mr. Handy she'd nicknamed Permie, but her derriere sealed the deal!

Dogs Having Fun in the Snow

What’s not to love about snow? It’s deep, and cool, and slippery! It can be hard or it can float on air. You can jump on top of it or dig underneath it. And best of all, the kids are playing in it! The drawbacks are that it’s cold and hard to drive in, but if you’re a dog, you have a fur coat and nowhere to drive anyway. -via Tastefully Offensive

This original take on Star Wars cosplay is beautiful! Hendo Art Cosplay costumed herself in Leia's robes from Episode IV, modified to look like a kimono and accented with accessories and makeup that make the princess look like a geisha from a bygone Japan.

My favorite part of the cosplay is Hendo Art's parasol decorated with the emblem of the Rebel Alliance.

How to Prevent Your Anger From Spiraling Out of Control

You wouldn't like him when he's angry | Image: Universal Pictures

For some, the holidays aren't necessarily all sweetness and light. With immediate and extended family gathered and the discussions of world events and politics that can produce; with some worn thin working odd hours with cranky coworkers; and travel by plane, train and automobile, tensions can run higher than usual.

But that doesn't mean we can't keep our own emotions in check. As "they" say, you can't control others, but you can control how you react toward them — and often, that makes a significant difference in the moods and behaviors of those around you.

This well researched article offers suggestions on how to communicate in tense situations as well as diffuse and keep reign on anger that gets a start simmering beneath the surface. Check it out; you may be able to use a technique that makes the inevitable refugee, presidential candidate and "who's eating the last slice of pie" discussion smooth sailing, and make your holiday season even more enjoyable.

Arman Foisy of Lillooet, British Columbia was recently driving his mother around. He stopped the car to turn around. Then his mother, Albina Foisy, opened the door and got out. She wanted to play in the snow.

She's 101 years old, but she has the joy of a child when encountering snow. She scooped up a few handfuls, fashioned a snowball, and threw it. In the video (auto-start), she says, "It's snowing quite a bit. It's kinda fun to play in the snow!" She's right!

Could You Bring Yourself To Kill Baby Hitler?

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST

(Image Link)

It seems no story of time travel can exist today without mentioning the idea of going back in time and killing Hitler, which sounds like a good idea even though it's one mighty big butterfly to step on.

The theory has evolved to killing Baby Hitler, thereby eliminating the Nazi era from even happening and possibly preventing World War II altogether.

But this creates a new conundrum- could you kill a cute little baby, even if that baby would grow up to be one of the most notorious figures of the 20th century?

Jeb Bush recently said he'd have no problem killing Baby Hitler (actually, he responded to the question with an enthusiastic "Hell Yeah I Would!), but he's not a very good example of normal human morality.

Personally I think the time traveler vs. Hitler debate could be solved without any bloodshed by going back in time and buying Hitler's paintings, thereby legitimizing his art career.

Hitler the artist will be too busy drawing Disney characters and painting portraits of German Shepherds to bring the Nazi party to power, and thirty years later we'd spot him hanging out with Andy Warhol in SoHo!

Tiny Little Nebulae

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST

You know how photographers can take a scenic view or a cityscape and make it look like a miniature by using the tilt-shift effect? What if you did that to a picture of something really, really big, like a galaxy or nebula, or even a supernova? Berlin artist St. Tesla did just that, and the results are adorable. Things that are bigger than we can even imagine end up looking like something microscopic. See more of these images at St. Tesla’s Behance page. -via Metafilter

Cybercrime: 10 Ways Criminals Use the Internet for Organized Crime

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

The internet is like everything else: you invent something new, and soon others will exploit it for nefarious ends. And I’m not just talking about cable internet providers. Both existing organized crime syndicates and new players wasted no time in figuring out ways to exploit the world wide web to steal money, scam the unaware, and attack enemies. And that’s just the beginning. There’s a lot of everyday global trade in contraband, especially drugs.

While most of us might turn to Amazon or eBay as our go-to for ordering just about anything, there’s an entirely darker layer to the internet, where organized crime has moved the sale of all manner of contraband – especially drugs. It started in 2011 with Silk Road, named for the famous trading route of the Han Dynasty. Silk Road is surprisingly similar to eBay – except in what you can buy there.

According to Pursuit Magazine and journalist Kevin Goodman, who infiltrated the cybercrime network, once users got past layers and layers on encryption, they found what was essentially Etsy for narcotics. After creating a user name and password and supplying payment information, buyers could place orders for an astounding array of illegal products. The site held the payment until the buyer confirmed they’d received the product, and, just like other, more well-traveled marketplaces, buyers could rate sellers and provide feedback.

Silk Road reportedly banned the sale of some illegal activities – murder-for-hire, stolen credit card numbers, child porn and weapons. But using bitcoin as the currency of choice, Silk Road quickly became the place to go for practically any drug under the sun. In October of 2013, Forbes reported that the FBI had taken down Silk Road and seized around $4 million in bitcoins.

But you know as soon as one method of illegal trade goes down, others spring up in its place. There will always be people who consider the profit to be worth the risk, no matter what the collateral damage is. 24 Of The Best Sarcastic Dialogue Options From Fallout 4

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 05:00 PM PST

The dialogue options are one of the most enjoyable elements in the Fallout franchise, and the fact that your decision actually affects how characters treat and perceive you makes chatting both fun and functional.

But nothing beats those snarky sarcastic line choices, which were apparently made into a mini game of sorts in Fallout 4 as players must hit the X button as soon as the option comes on the screen to fire off a sarcastic remark.

Fallout 4 is continuing the tradition of letting gamers play as a post-apocalyptic smartass, and as this video by OutsideXbox proves sarcasm is sweeter than Nuka-Cola when you're making friends outside the Vault.

But most of all, it’s a way to combine family time, learning time, and best of all, eating time into one glorious celebration. If he learns nothing else, Moishe will be able to make his own pancakes one day. This comic is from Lunarbaboon.

What Is Figgy Pudding?

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

While Americans are usually introduced to figgy pudding by way of the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” few ever actually consume it, much less make one. You might be surprised to find that it’s not even what we know as pudding.

It’s really not pudding, at least by American standards. The cake—which contains figs and is topped with brandy—has been an English Christmas dessert since the mid-1600s. Around that time, it was banned by English Puritans because of the large amount of alcohol content. Some believe that a Medieval custom dictated that pudding could only be made on the 25th Sunday after Trinity Sunday and that it was originally comprised of 13 ingredients to represent Christ and his 12 apostles.

Now you know. You might be more familiar with holiday dishes like sweet potatoes with marshmallows, green bean casserole, gingerbread, latkes, etc. but you might not know where they came from or why we eat them during the winter holidays. There's A Fine Line Between Attractive And Creepy

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST

Everybody wants to be seen as attractive to potential partners no matter what they say, and in the quest to find a likeable look people often take a wrong turn and end up in Creepsville.

Some think upping their physical game is the key to being seen as attractive, but then they get so buff they scare children, their muscles constantly rippling and dripping sweat.

Others think the secret to being seen as attractive is to maintain eye contact, hypnotizing their romantic target like a cobra hypnotizing its prey, but predators aren't sexy- they're scary.

Attraction also relies on face-to-face communication and body signals, so you should keep the texting to a minimum until you really know someone, or the next message you receive might be a restraining order!

Luckily illustrator Kat Fajardo and writer Will Stephen have created a colorful and easy to follow guide revealing The Fine Line Between Attractive And Creepy, so we don't have to come off as creepy anymore.

Blind Auditions: Orchestrating Impartiality

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

The number of female musicians in the top five American orchestras went from 5% in 1970 to 10% in 1980 and then to 25% in 1997. Sure, there were more women trying out as the years passed, but that doesn’t account for the entire difference. See, at one time orchestras tended to hire musicians they knew, like friends of friends. You had to know someone. Pressure from union members led some orchestras to change the way they auditioned for new members.

In the 1970s and 1980s, orchestras began using blind auditions. Candidates are situated on a stage behind a screen to play for a jury that cannot see them. In some orchestras, blind auditions are used just for the preliminary selection while others use it all the way to the end, until a hiring decision is made.

Even when the screen is only used for the preliminary round, it has a powerful impact; researchers have determined that this step alone makes it 50% more likely that a woman will advance to the finals. And the screen has also been demonstrated to be the source of a surge in the number of women being offered positions.

The 1997 study cited attributes between 30% and 55% of the increase in the female proportion of orchestras to blind auditions.

Redditor Kayge told a story about a blind audition for a tuba player in a major orchestra that surprised everyone when a tiny 20-year-old woman won. That was Carol Jantsch of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who became the first female principal tuba player for a major American orchestra in 2006. She also became the youngest member of the orchestra. It’s sad to think that she could have been dismissed as a possibility if the auditions were visual as well as audio. -via reddit

10 Celebrities With Strange Hobbies

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

(Image Link)

It's hard to accept that celebrities are just like the rest of us, basically because nobody with that much money is just like the rest of us, but there's one way I believe we are the same- our hobbies.

Celebs may have more money to spend on their collections, but the drive to collect is something we share in common, and stars often collect the same silly stuff we do.

(Image Link)

Tom Hanks says the clackety-clack sound of old school typewriters speaks to him, so that's what he collects. Johnny Depp has a massive doll collection, which includes dozens of Barbies and a Lindsey Lohan doll complete with house arrest ankle monitor.

But what's David Arquette up to at the top of the post? He's knitting his heart out while on vacation, which is only strange when you consider those are his official knitting shorts...

Husband Publishes List: "Reasons My Wife Is Crying"

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

We all cry sometimes. For example, you may get sawdust in your eyes while woodworking. Or you watch an emotionally intense movie, such as The Dirty Dozen.

Those are the two occasions when it is acceptable to cry.

But Aaron Gillies, a comedy writer, has noted that his wife cries more often than that. She cries at incidents that he finds trivial. He has published a list of some of these occasions. These include watching a rabbit escape from a fox in a nature documentary and remembering that swans can be gay.

On reflection, I agree with the wife: all of these are legitimate reasons to cry, which you can now add to the pair that I have mentioned above.

Now, as a happily married man who plans to remain that way, I advise you gentlemen to never do this. Embarrassing your wife online is a terrible idea for most marriages. But Gillies's wife tweets that "I don't feel at all attacked." She's a good sport.

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 08:00 AM PST

Precious mementos such as letters, trinkets and photographs are far too easy to lose during your lifetime, and when one of these beloved items is lost it leaves a hole in your heart that never heals.

Veteran Bill Moore was lonely and missing his significant other, just like most guys stationed overseas during WWII, and just like the others he made himself feel less lonely by writing his beloved Bernadean letters.

When Bill came home he married Bernadean, the letters becoming part of their love's legacy, but somewhere along the way one very important letter disappeared, only to reappear 70 years later in a thrift store in Colorado.

It's amazing that something as easily lost as a love letter would be discovered so many decades later hiding in the sleeve of a record, I guess they didn't play that album very often!

The Behind-the-Scenes Beauty of Barbarella

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 07:30 AM PST

Ah, Barbarella. How many ideas sprung from its seminal influence (Dr. Durand Durand, anyone)? Roger Vadim's 1968 film based on the French comics was the flop that launched a thousand concepts. Now a cult favorite, it starred Vadim's one-time wife and American acting dynasty family member Jane Fonda as a sexy star traveler.

This iinked collection of behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Barbarella catches Fonda, Vadim and the easy-on-the-eyes, mostly French cast at the height of their glamour and beauty. See photos of Vadim and Fonda together, with his son, her about to spacesuit malfunction out of being dressed, a video clip of the opening titles, and more here.

First, the subway rat of New York City (there's just one, right?) carried off a slice of pizza. Now he's taking pictures of himself.

Fox 5 New York (auto-start video) reports that a man was sleeping near the tracks at a station in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. A rat climbed on him and somehow activated his phone's camera, taking an Instagram-worthy photo of himself. You can see the incident in this video:

The rat is determined to remain in the media spotlight.
