Woman Finds Venomous Snake Behind Her Refrigerator

Posted: 19 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

And meanwhile, in Australia... a woman in Adelaide had a shock when she saw a snake peep out at her from behind her fridge. She immediately called Snake Catchers Adelaide, a local service that could trap the creature. What was behind the appliance was the second most venemous land snake in the world: the Eastern brown snake, also known for its speed and aggressive nature.

As it turned out, Rolly from Snake Catchers Adelaide suspected the snake was a pregnant female, so he kept it for a few days. His suspicions were confirmed when the snake shed her skin and laid approximately 14 eggs, which he estimates will hatch in March. See a video about this below, and see Snake Catchers Adelaide's Facebook post about the incident here.

Finally! A Toilet for Those of Us on the Go

Posted: 19 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

(Photo: 4x4 forum)

Let there be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, for I have discovered this brilliant invention only after Christmas is long over. Otherwise, I would have given these toilets to everyone in my family.

I am, alas, unable to find out any information about this brilliant invention. It's like the previously mentioned Bumper Dumper, which attaches to a trailer hitch. Unlike the Bumper Dumper, though, you do have to stop traveling to use this potty.

This is the ideal solution for people who are camping or are having trouble finding a public restroom. Just carry this portable toilet seat with you. When you need to to go, find a car and get to work.

A Movie Every Day

Posted: 19 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

Comic artist David Yoder has a strenuous project for 2016. He is watching a movie every day, and then reviewing each of them in a 6-panel comic. That’s 366 movies this year, and 366 comics. They aren’t all new movies seen in a theater, but many of the older movies will be familiar to you. They range from blockbusters to documentaries to kids’ films, and you can follow along at Yoder's Comics Tumblr. -via The A.V. Club

Thalidomide: From Medical Disaster to Cancer Treatment

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 11:00 PM PST

In the late1950s and early ‘60s, the drug Thalidomide was prescribed to combat morning sickness (among other things) except in the US, where the FDA didn’t trust the safety repots. That mistrust was arranged, as many women who took the drug miscarried, or gave birth to children with a variety of birth defects. After a few years, Thalidomide was recalled and the very name became synonymous with the tragic consequences of inadequate drug testing. But outside of the headlines, a strange thing happened: medicine began to find new uses for the discredited drug.

In 1964, Israeli doctor Jacob Sheskin had patients with harsh leprosy symptoms involving painful lesions. While looking for any possible drug available, he came upon thalidomide in his office’s apothecary. He gave it to the patient, and it worked almost immediately: the lesions practically disappeared overnight.

Doctors began using it for other illnesses that seemed biochemically related, and found another astonishing effect: it elongated the lives of people with bone and blood cancers. In 1999, Dr. Bart Barlogie of the University of Arizona studied 84 patients who took the drug: a third of the patients improved while two went completely into remission. More studies about how this worked followed in 2010, by which time thalidomide was once again seen as a drug with much potential.

More research pinpointed the mechanism that Thalidomide uses to target cancer cells, and it is used more widely for a variety of cancers. Read about this new direction in cancer treatment at Atlas Obscura.

Adam Driver Cat Lives

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the top grossing movie of all time in the U.S. and Canada. Girls is a popular HBO show going into its sixth season. Adam Driver happens to star in both. He also made his mark in Inside Llewyn Davis, J. Edgar, and a number of indies. He's essentially an "It Boy" of the moment.

But let me introduce you to one sweet soul who couldn't care less: Adam Driver Cat. There he hangs, adorably big-eared and intense, at the Monmouth County SPCA, waiting to be adopted. He doesn't care about your lightsabers or Chewy action figures. He wants a forever home. Hopefully, looking like a movie star will help him in this endeavor.

Actor Shaves Right Side of His Body

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

Will Forte is an actor on the TV show The Last Man on Earth. He recently showed up at celebrity parties in Los Angeles in a dashing new look. It looks like the right side of his body is shaved (we see only his head, but I'm extrapolating from extant data. That's called science).

The sharp contrast between Forte's character's shaggy look on the post-apocalyptic show set in the future and the carefully managed and bounded world of the pre-apocalyptic present is a thoughtful commentary on the fragility of what we refer to as civilization, as well as cool-looking.

Hercules, George Washington’s Slave Chef

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 08:00 PM PST

Scholastic pulled a children’s book called A Birthday Cake For George Washington from its catalog. It was released on January 5 and immediately drew backlash from book critics and in Amazon reviews. The book shows George Washington’s slave chef Hercules and his daughter Delia joyfully preparing a cake for Washington’s 65th birthday. Adult reviewers understandably object to the portrayal of slavery as joyful, particularly as it is introduced to young children. You can read about the book at Buzzfeed.

Hercules was a real person, and his real story is fascinating. He is today the most famous slave of the Washingtons, not only for his reputation as a chef, but for the fact that he successfully escaped. President Washington resided in Philadelphia during his presidency, which was the nation’s capital from 1790 to 1800. Washington brought Hercules to the city to cook for the family. But Pennsylvania passed a law in 1780, An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery, which placed various restrictions on the practice. One part stated that any slave brought into Pennsylvania who held residency there for six months would become free. Washington got around that by sending his house slaves back to Mt. Vernon before their six months was up -and bring them back again after some time, resetting the clock. That’s why Hercules was sent back to do regular labor at the farm in Virginia. The slave rotation scheme was technically illegal, but no one called the president out on it.

When George Washington was celebrating his 65th birthday on February 22, 1797, the president was in Philadelphia, and Hercules was in Mt. Vernon in Virginia -and that’s the day he left, never to be seen again, at least by the Washingtons. While Hercules was legally freed after Washington’s death in accordance with his will, there is no evidence that he ever knew about that. Hercules’ wife and children were owned by Martha Washington, and they were never freed. You can read more about Hercules at the Mt. Vernon website with further details at Wikipedia.

Actors Who Received Oscar Nods For Less Than 20 Minutes Of Screen Time

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST

Some stars can't get an Oscar nod to save their life, and no matter how many blockbuster movies they star in, or how brightly they shine in the hearts of their fans, the Academy Award eludes them.

And then there are actors like Anthony Hopkins, Ingrid Bergman and Judi Dench who don't need to be on screen for long to steal the show from their fellow stars, receiving Oscar nominations for less than 20 minutes of screen time.

Anthony Hopkins appeared in Silence Of The Lambs for less than 16 minutes and yet he took home a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Hannibal.

(YouTube Link)

Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for her performance in Murder On The Orient Express, a film in which she played a pivotal role despite only being on camera for just over fourteen minutes.

But the award for briefest appearance goes to Judi Dench, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare In Love, which amounted to a whopping 8 minutes of screen time.

Here she is in 1999 accepting the award, which was presented by Robin Williams:

RIP Glenn Frey

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

The Eagles have announced on their website that founding member Glen Frey died today. He had been ill for some time, suffering from complications of rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, according to the statement. Frey, along with Don Henley, Randy Meisner, and Bernie Leadon, formed a backup band for Linda Ronstadt in 1971 that became The Eagles. The band sold over 150 million records, and their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) was the best-selling album of the 20th century in the U.S. CNN has more.

Frey saw solo success with the 1982 release "No Fun Aloud." He hit the top 40 with "The Heat Is On," "You Belong to the City," "True Love," and "Soul Searchin.'"

He also tried his hand at acting with a guest spot on "Miami Vice" and a small role in the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire," among other credits.

Don Henley released a statement that read, in part,

“We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. We brought our two-year ‘History of the Eagles Tour’ to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone. I’m not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life.

Glenn Frey was 67.

Archaeologists Find Prosthetic Foot Shaped Like a Horse's Hoof

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 04:00 PM PST

(Images: Chinese Archaeology)

Archaeologists excavating a 2,200-year old tomb in Turpan, China, have found a unique prosthetic leg design. It was used by man who appeared to have a deformed leg. He was unable to straighten the knee joint, which rested in the socket of the prosthesis. The base isn't shaped like a human foot, but a horse's hoof. Live Science quotes the journal Chinese Archaeology:

The prosthetic leg was "made of poplar wood; it has seven holes along the two sides with leather tapes for attaching it to the deformed leg," the archaeologists wrote. "The lower part of the prosthetic leg is rendered into a cylindrical shape, wrapped with a scrapped ox horn and tipped with a horsehoof, which is meant to augment its adhesion and abrasion."

"The severe wear of the top implies that it has been in use for a long time," they added.

Snoop Dogg Narrates Planet Earth

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

Snoop Dogg is not so much a tree hugger as he is a guy who smokes trees, but that doesn't mean he's isn't a friend to his fellow animals.

As his name implies Mr. Dogg is a huge fan of animals, and his encyclopedic knowledge of all creatures great and small landed him the animal lover gig of a lifetime- narrator for the nature documentary series Planet Earth.

BBC's Planet Earth series is normally narrated by David Attenborough, but people thought his narration left the series lacking any sort of street cred, so they brought in the Dee Oh Double Gee to make us howl with laughter!

The Texas Giants

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 01:00 PM PST

Franklin and Penelope Shields worked the land in Texas with their seven sons. P.T. Barnum’s agents heard about the sons, who were called "giants," and went to investigate. In the late 1870s, Barnum hired the four of the men to tour in his Barnum & Bailey sideshow as "The Texas Giants."

We know everything in Texas is bigger. That includes the exaggerations. The Shields Brothers were plenty tall: Shade Shields was 6 feet 8 inches tall, Guss Shields was 6 feet 9, Frank Shields was 6 feet 10.5, and Jack Shields was 6 feet 11. However, Barnum billed them all as being over seven feet tall. Family members later said they wore lifts in their shoes during showtime. The brothers toured for over ten years. When the others quit touring, Shade continued with his wife Annie O'Brien (who was 6’ 7") as the "Tallest Married Couple" until the turn of the century.

There were originally nine sons, one of whom died as a teenager, the other died in the Civil War. Frank Shields’ grandson, Marcus Ross Freiberger, was 6’ 10” tall and played on the US Olympic basketball team when they won the 1952 gold medal in Helsinki. -via reddit

Guy Falling For 9 Seconds While Trying To Shovel Snow: The Remixes

Slipping and sliding while shoveling snow is something many people can relate to right about now, and something that will become even more relatable in the coming months.

But the person falling down doesn't generally see the trip as a laughing matter, so they have to laugh at the guy doing the snow shovel dance in this video instead.

His slick snow shoveling moves are so hot they melt the ice, so video remixers took him to all sorts of stellar places, including an intense battle with that shufflin' Sith Darth Maul.

6-Year Old Asks Dad for Allowance Advance, Gets Official Loan Rejection Letter

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

The 6-year old son of redditor Otto303 asked his father for a $20 advance on his allowance. Essentially, he asked for a loan using expected future revenues as collateral.

The father drafted a professional bank letter in response, rejecting the request and explaining why the Dad Savings & Loan (tagline: "Because Apparently I Look Like I'm Made of Money") regarded the child as a poor loan risk. The child has the option of appealing to the loan dispute manager, who is also known as Mom.

7 Real Products From Dystopian Fiction

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

When science fiction writers -or any kind of writers, for that matter- have an unfamiliar product that flourishes in a bleak, dysfunctional, hopeless society, they go way out of their way to make sure it doesn’t have the same name as an existing product. That’s for good reason. No company wants their brand associated with bad times. But after the work of fiction becomes famous? Surprisingly, name recognition often trumps evil connotation. There have been quite a few new products that adopted a brand name from dystopian fiction. The most famous example is

Soylent

The 1973 dystopian movie Soylent Green follows a detective of the future who stumbles upon the secret to how the government is solving the world’s food crisis. Oddly enough, there’s now a food substitute product named Soylent that’s become a cult hit in the brogrammer crowd. If I need to tell you what Soylent Green is made of in the film (and why it’s so odd to name a food product after it), maybe consider renting the movie tonight. I wouldn’t want to spoil a 40-year old movie for you.

Think about what products might be there before you read the list at PaleoFuture. I was hoping to see Ice-nine. Although it couldn’t be the exact same thing as in Cat’s Cradle, it would be a cool name for a soft drink. -via the Presurfer

Alan Rickman's Final Role Was Narrating a Tortoise Eating a Strawberry

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

(Video Link)

Actor Alan Rickman's recent death caused an outpouring of grief as fans fondly remembered his performances in Galaxy Quest, Harry Potter, and Die Hard. His final role, though, may soon rival those.

Before he died, Rickman recorded a voice-over describing a tortoise eating a strawberry. This was a promotional ad for the charities Save the Children and the Refugee Council. For every view of the video on YouTube, those charities receive a small payment.

It's a fundraising system called OneClickGiving. ABC News describes how the college students who created it were able to recruit Rickman:

Through a connection, they were able to get Rickman onboard and steal an hour of his time for the viral project.

Oliver Phillips, OneClickGiving founder, told the BBC Rickman was kind and generous.

"He could not have been more kind and generous, letting us in, welcoming us, asking us how university was going, he was really great throughout," Mr Phillips said.

How Do the Oscars Choose Their Nominees and Winners?

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

A few years ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changed the way that films were nominated for Oscars, and the way they win. The system they use now is particularly convoluted. This video gives a short overview of how the winner of the Best Picture award is chosen, but the formula for the nominations is explained at Vox. Good luck understanding it. The upshot is that there are fewer and fewer surprises in both the Oscar nominees and the winners.

(YouTube link)

If you are connected with one of the 305 films that came out in 2015 that were eligible for the process, the precise way that 6,291 Academy members fill out their nominations ballot can spell out how your career in Hollywood progresses. And when you think about exactly how many movies each member actually saw, how likely they are to bother voting, and how much influence their friends in the business have, it all becomes quite a stressful experience. -via Daily of the Da

Rollermania! 45 Fun Photos of Roller Disco in the 1970s and 1980s

This wealth of photos from that era is an absolute blast from the past.

The Comic Book Code

Posted: 18 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

What was in that "comic book code" we've heard so much about? Let's find out, from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Attack of the Factoids.

In 1954 the U.S. government enacted a “code” for the comic book industry to regulate violence, language, and other issues that might come up in the stories. Comic book creators lived by that “code” for almost half a century. Marvel finally became the first to renounce it in 2001, and in 2011 DC Comics and Archie Comics were the last publishers to use it. Here are some of government’s rules:

CRIME AND CRIMINALS

“Crimes shall never be presented in such a way as to create sympathy for the criminal, to promote distrust of the forces of law and justice, or to inspire others with a desire to imitate criminals… If crime is depicted it shall be as a sordid and unpleasant activity… Criminals shall not be presented so as to be rendered glamorous… In every instance good shall triumph over evil and the criminal punished for his misdeeds.”

RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY

“Policemen, judges, government officials, and respected institutions shall never be presented in such a way as to create disrespect for established authority… Respect for parents, the moral code, and for honorable behavior shall be fostered.”

VIOLENCE, GHOULS, AND WEREWOLVES

“All scenes of horror, excessive bloodshed, gory or gruesome crimes, depravity, lust, sadism, masochism shall not be permitted… All lurid, unsavory, gruesome illustrations shall be eliminated… Scenes dealing with, or instruments associated with walking dead, torture, vampires and vampirism, ghouls, cannibalism, and werewolfism are prohibited… Inclusion of stories dealing with evil shall be used or shall be published only where the intent is to illustrate a moral issue and in no case shall evil be presented alluringly, nor so as to injure the sensibilities of the reader.”

PROFANITY, SLANG, AND GOOD GRAMMAR

“Profanity, obscenity, smut, vulgarity, or words or symbols which have acquired undesirable meanings are forbidden… Although slang and colloquialisms are acceptable, excessive use should be discouraged and, wherever possible, good grammar shall be employed.”

SEX

“Suggestive and salacious illustration or suggestive posture is unacceptable… All characters shall be depicted in dress reasonably acceptable to society… Females shall be drawn realistically without exaggeration of any physical qualities… Passion or romantic interest shall never be treated in such a way as to stimulate the lower and baser emotions…

Seduction and rape shall never be shown or suggested… Sex perversion or any inference to same is strictly forbidden.”

THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE

“Divorce shall not be treated humorously nor represented as desirable… Illicit sex relations are neither to be hinted at nor portrayed… Sexual abnormalities are unacceptable… The treatment of live-romance stories shall emphasize the value of the home and the sanctity of marriage.”

TITLES

“No comic magazine shall use the word( s) ‘horror’ or ‘terror’ in its title… Restraint in the use of the word ‘crime’ in titles or subtitles shall be exercised… The letters of the word ‘crime’ on a comics-magazine cover shall never be appreciably greater in dimension than the other words contained in the title. The word ‘crime’ shall never appear alone on a cover.”
