5 Wild Ideas That Used to be Science

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

1. PHLOGISTON

In 1669, alchemist Johann Joachim Becher proposed that fire was caused by an element called phlogiston. Anything you could set alight, he claimed, contained this substance and the only way to put a fire out was to “dephlogisticate it”—that is, burn it to ash. This theory prevailed for nearly 100 years, until Joseph Priestley debunked it by discovering a little thing called oxygen.

2. SPONTANEOUS GENERATION

For ancients like Aristotle, the maggots that wriggled out of rotten meat were living proof that life could bloom at random. As late as the 1600s, Belgian scientist Jan Baptista van Helmont had a recipe for making mice: “Place a dirty shirt or some rags in an open pot or barrel containing a few grains of wheat or some wheat bran, and in twenty-one days, mice will appear.”

3. MIASMA THEORY

Until the mid-19th century, people believed bad smells were a poisonous mist of decomposed matter that caused disease. It wasn’t until the 1860s that germ theory revealed that microorganisms are actually to blame. However, the idea that the world was full of invisible living things seemed so outrageous that for decades doctors debated the necessity of washing their hands.

4. MATERNAL IMPRESSION

Up until the early 1900s, some doctors believed that a pregnant woman’s thoughts and experiences could cause birth defects. For example, if she saw a man lose a hand in a wheat thresher, the shock could cause her child to be born with a stump. Joseph Merrick (a.k.a. “the Elephant Man”) believed his deformities were the result of his mother being frightened by a fairground elephant.

5. EMISSION THEORY

A lot of very smart people—from Plato to Euclid to Ptolemy—believed that we see things because our eyes shoot out beams of light. Of course, this is backward: We see because light enters our eyes. But the idea persisted nevertheless for at least 10 centuries: A 2002 study found that up to 67 percent of college students believed eyes emit rather than receive light.

Banner Of The Rebellion - When The Odds Are In Our Favor Everyone Wins

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

Banner Of The Rebellion by Adria.Wells

While everyone is obsessed with that war in the stars and the intergalactic rebellion born from the conflict it's important to remember there's another equally important rebellion taking place here on Earth. This one doesn't star Jedis and Siths using the Force to fight, nor does it involve crazy alien critters and a sea of stormtroopers clad in white, because this rebellion is only for hungry humans. The Hunger Games have created a need for a new type of hero, one who simply empowers the people into action rather than taking down the bad guys all by herself, and although the rebel Katniss isn't as flashy as those light saber sporting space guys her story is far more important because it shows us what to do when people in high places try to clip our wings...

Let the games begin with this Banner Of The Rebellion t-shirt by Adria.Wells, it's the stylish way to declare your independence.

Finish What You Started

“I will finish what you started.” We were all aware of that pledge long before we saw The Force Awakens, because it was a central part of the movie trailer. But we jumped the gun a little in thinking we knew what he meant. This is the latest from Down the Upward Spiral by Corey Giacco.

Don’t Dip Into Your Own Stash

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST

Two guys, Leland and Holland, were taking a bunch of marijuana from Las Vegas to Bozeman, Montana. The problem is that they indulged in some along the way. Then they got paranoid and became convinced that the police were following them. They were so bothered about it that they called the Rexburg, Idaho, police and asked them to “just end it.” In other words, they turned themselves in.

(YouTube link)

There were no police following the men, but they never caught on to that detail. The police dispatcher was very helpful, as were the policemen who met the two men and arrested them. -via Viral Viral Videos

18 Rock and Rolling Facts About Led Zeppelin

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham got together in 1968 to perform as The New Yardbirds. They meshed so well that they continued playing together for years as Led Zeppelin. Now, whether you consider yourself a die-hard Zep fan (as I do) or you don’t know much about them at all, you’ll enjoy reading some tidbits about the group.

7. THEY HAVE BEEN SUED FOR PLAGIARISM A COUPLE OF TIMES.

Folk singer Jake Holmes claimed he wrote “Dazed and Confused” in a 2010 lawsuit. Holmes opened for The Yardbirds in August 1967. The next day, Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty and bassist Chris Dreja both bought Holmes’ debut album with his song “Dazed and Confused” on it for the band—which included Page—to practice and play their own version of it. Page was credited as the sole writer of the song when Zeppelin recorded it for their first record.

“Whole Lotta Love” was accused of being based off of Willie Dixon’s “You Need Love” (performed by Muddy Waters) and the Small Faces’ “You Need Loving” only because, as Page once explained, Plant referenced the “You Need Love” lyrics in “Whole Lotta Love.” Dixon was given a co-songwriter credit after a 1985 lawsuit. Plant admitted in a 1990 interview that his lyrics weren’t original. “I just thought, 'Well, what am I going to sing?' That was it, a nick. Now happily paid for.”

The iconic “Stairway to Heaven” is also a part of an ongoing lawsuit. The band Spirit has claimed the arpeggio opening is too similar to their 1968 instrumental “Taurus.”

11. PAGE LIVED IN ALEISTER CROWLEY’S FORMER HOME.

In 1971, Page bought the former Loch Ness, Scotland home of the British philosopher and occultist Crowley. Page claimed it was haunted, not necessarily because of Crowley, but because of its previous owners. "t was also a church that was burned to the ground with the congregation in it,” Page told Rolling Stone in 1975. “Strange things have happened in that house that had nothing to do with Crowley. The bad vibes were already there. A man was beheaded there, and sometimes you can hear his head rolling down." The guitarist was a fan of Crowley’s, having Crowley’s “Do what thou wilt” inscribed in the run-off groove of the original Led Zeppelin III vinyl records. Page was believed by some to worship Satan because of these connections; Page never confirmed.

The rest of the list isn’t quite as awful. You’ll find it all at mental_floss.

Police Officer Gets Shot While on Traffic Stop, But Still Issues Ticket

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

Nizaam Alexander, a police officer in Cape Town, South Africa, is not one to let a little annoyance like getting shot in the back distract him from his duties. If he pulls over a driver for a traffic violation, that driver is getting a ticket.

(Video Link)

The entire incident was caught on Officer Alexander's car's dashboard camera. He pulled over a driver. While talking to him, another man passing by pulled out his gun and tried to rob Alexander. The officer tried to flee, but the man shot him in the back.

Alexander returned fire and called for backup. What happened to the assailant is unclear from current news reports. But Officer Alexander promptly finished writing a ticket for the driver (auto-start video). Then he went to the hospital for treatment.

Man with Stage IV Bone Cancer Rescues Neighbor from Burning House

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST

(Photo: KTIV)

Dennis Kucia of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin says that he doesn't have the strength to "open a pickle jar." That's because he's now fighting stage IV bone cancer only after recovering from throat cancer 10 years ago.

Nonetheless, when Kucia's duplex caught on fire, his work wasn't done after he successfully escaped. He saw that his neighbor hadn't made it out. So Kucia hobbled inside on his crutches. He found his neighbor on the floor, surrounded by flames. Kucia dropped his crutches, grabbed the man by his collar, and dragged him out of the house.

Kucia then went to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. KTIV talked to Kucia about what motivates him:

"Ten, fifteen more seconds he would have been done, because the flames were shooting across. He was laying down flat trying to get out," says Kucia. "He's got one leg, he couldn't do it."

Kucia was hesitant to share his story, but decided it was a way to acknowledge those who helped he and his family during the fire.

The officers, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers helped him and six others inside the home.

Kucia says they give him hope, to help him fight off the cancer long enough to see his new grandchild the family is expecting in four months.

"I want that baby. I want to hold that baby. That's what I want to do. That's why I'm trying to keep going."

Exotic Magnetism - A Unique Perspective Often Leads To Incredible Discoveries

Exotic Magnetism by Pacalin

History has really done a discredit to Nikolai Tesla's name, because he was hip to some scientific secrets even the eggheads of today haven't quite figured out. One of his greatest discoveries was dubbed exotic magnetism, which changed the face of particle physics forever, and he owed it all to his white pigeon friend Blank. Tesla was a unique figure, built to change the way mankind sees science and discovery, and he would fall to pieces if he saw how we've turned our backs on his ingenious inventions thanks to a snake named Edison!

Witness the Sweet Friendship Between a Man and a Young Rescue Elephant

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 04:00 PM PST

Six-year-old Kham La, the juvenile elephant shown in the video above, is a resident of Elephant Nature Park in the Chang Mai province of Thailand. Darrick, a tractor driver at the site, has become Kham La's favorite human. Whenever she spots Darrick, the young elephant makes a beeline to him and, under the watchful eyes of her herd, she gets attention lavished upon her in the form of pets and softly spoken greetings.

Kham La had an unfortunate past of being taken from her mom and subjected to being "broken,” a way to make elephants submit to human demands, and subsequently trained as a performer. Thankfully, the youngster was rescued and is now free to roam (and choose friends) as she sees fit. What a wonderful ending to what could have been a tragic story! Via Slate

Bathing in 500 Pounds of Putty

This was not a good idea for the volunteer. They had to speed up the video of him sinking into it because it took so long! He could barely breath, because the stuff is barely liquid. Getting out was much more difficult. It does look cool, though. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Polar Bear Cub at Toronto Zoo is Stealing Hearts

Toronto Zoo
welcomed this precious female polar bear cub on November 11, 2015 when Aurora, one of the zoo's two adult female polar bears, gave birth to two cubs. Unfortunately, the sibling of this cub did not survive his first 24 hours. The surviving cub was immediately moved to the intensive care unit of the facility to give her the best care possible. Though the staff is taking things day by day in terms of her health, it appears she's doing well thus far.

Due to the disappearing sea ice, experts estimate that there are only 20,000-25,000 polar bears in existence. Scientists predict the worst case scenario being the loss of two-thirds of the polar bear population by the year 2050. The species is classified as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List.

“Love Me Do”: The Beatles First Record

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website or at Facebook.

I didn't know it myself, but October 5, 1962 was a hugely significant date in the history of pop culture. It was on this date that the first official Beatles record was released, and also, the first James Bond film Dr. No with the great Sean Connery, was released. Has there ever been a more incredible date in the history of pop culture?

Okay, I like James Bond fine, but I am a layman with 007 and his history, so I’ll write this article about the Beatles, my very favorite pop culture subject.

"Love Me Do" wasn't "technically" the Fab Four's first record. They had made some cheapie recordings in Liverpool and in Hamburg, Germany, where they were a very popular club band in the early '60's, before they became famous.

They made a few recordings as a backing band for a singer named Tony Sheridan, and were billed as “The Beat Brothers" on these records. The then-strange name “The Beatles" was translated in German to "peedles,” meaning the male sex organ, so the "Beatles" name was left off the record label for obvious reasons- “The Beat Brothers" used in its stead.

"Love Me Do" was, by most accounts, a Paul McCartney song, one of his earliest. Oddly though, Paul was later to credit it as "50-50,” him and John Lennon together. Even odder, George Martin, the Beatles producer erroneously credits it as "a John song."

The song was originally supposed to be sung by John, but as John had to play harmonica on it, it was given over to Paul. Paul claims he can still hear the nerves in his voice as he listens to "Love Me Do" to this day.

"Love Me Do" was recorded by the Beatles in their first recording studio visit at Abbey Road Studio on June 6, 1962, with their pre-Ringo drummer, Pete Best. Poor Pete, his drumming was pretty crummy that day and this was to be a huge factor in him getting the sack in August of '62 and Ringo stepping into history.

On September 4th, 1962, the four Beatles (now complete with Ringo) together as a group for less than a month, happily (albeit extremely nervously) trooped into Abbey Road Studios to record "Love Me Do" once again, this time with Ringo.

"Love Me Do" took 15 takes to get right that historic day (or so they thought at the time). Unused to headphones, also stiff with nerves- these factors contributed to the then-excessive number of tries. Not getting it quite right, the boys were invited back to Abbey Road to try again a week later.

Ringo happily reported to his next Beatle recording session on September 11th of '62, and was coldly and patronizingly handed a tambourine to play. A much-used session drummer named Andy White was brought in to fill in on the drums.

According to Abbey Road's general manager Ken Townshend, the song's composer (Paul) was as dissatisfied as producer George Martin with Ringo's September 4th approach to "Love Me Do.” Paul was to put a different spin on this story when interviewed 25 years later and stated that Ringo had failed to "lock in" his bass drum with Paul's bass guitar, necessitating the fill-in drumming of White.

Ringo was heartsick and thought "they were doing a Pete Best on me.” Of course, his worries were needless, as Ringo was to be the perfect fit in the Fab Four, but the poor guy didn't know that then.

Ringo and Andy both played drums on various takes and versions of the song that day. The final released version of "Love Me Do" features Ringo playing on the single, but Andy White drumming on the version used on the Beatles first album Please Please Me, released a few months later.

Beatles producer George Martin was later to apologize to Ringo for the Andy White replacement thing. Ringo later admitted that it took him years to completely forgive Martin for his lack of trust and confidence.

John Lennon played a shoplifted harmonica on "Love Me Do.” While the Beatles were traveling through Holland several months earlier, Lennon the mischief-maker had pocketed the shiny, new instrument from a local music shop, much to the shock and surprise of his bandmates. (Over the years, several Beatles fans have located this Holland music shop and "re-paid" the establishment's owner for Lennon's thievery.)

"Love Me Do" was released on October 5, 1962. It slowly climbed the record charts (the Beatles celebrating wildly with every chart advance) until it peaked at number 17 in December. This was to be record's high point.

Rumors swirled around at the time, in and around Liverpool, that Beatles manager Brian Epstein had bought 10,000 copies of "Love Me Do" himself, to boost the record's sales and status. This strange rumor has never, to this day, been proven or disproved.

George Harrison was never to forget the thrill of hearing "Love Me Do" on the radio for the first time and "going shivery" all over. Although George was to conquer the world as a member of the Beatles, he always said hearing "Love Me Do" on the radio was "the biggest buzz ever."

While you dream, memories that you’ve actively attempted to bury force their way up from the grave to humiliate you once again. It’s been said that dreaming is your body’s way of doing some mental housecleaning. If that’s the way it is, I would rather just get used to a messy house.
