| 5 Wild Ideas That Used to be Science Posted: 22 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST 1. PHLOGISTONIn 1669, alchemist Johann Joachim Becher proposed that fire was caused by an element called phlogiston. Anything you could set alight, he claimed, contained this substance and the only way to put a fire out was to “dephlogisticate it”—that is, burn it to ash. This theory prevailed for nearly 100 years, until Joseph Priestley debunked it by discovering a little thing called oxygen. 2. SPONTANEOUS GENERATIONFor ancients like Aristotle, the maggots that wriggled out of rotten meat were living proof that life could bloom at random. As late as the 1600s, Belgian scientist Jan Baptista van Helmont had a recipe for making mice: “Place a dirty shirt or some rags in an open pot or barrel containing a few grains of wheat or some wheat bran, and in twenty-one days, mice will appear.” 3. MIASMA THEORYUntil the mid-19th century, people believed bad smells were a poisonous mist of decomposed matter that caused disease. It wasn’t until the 1860s that germ theory revealed that microorganisms are actually to blame. However, the idea that the world was full of invisible living things seemed so outrageous that for decades doctors debated the necessity of washing their hands. 4. MATERNAL IMPRESSIONUp until the early 1900s, some doctors believed that a pregnant woman’s thoughts and experiences could cause birth defects. For example, if she saw a man lose a hand in a wheat thresher, the shock could cause her child to be born with a stump. Joseph Merrick (a.k.a. “the Elephant Man”) believed his deformities were the result of his mother being frightened by a fairground elephant. 5. EMISSION THEORY(Image source: Dragonball Z Wikia) A lot of very smart people—from Plato to Euclid to Ptolemy—believed that we see things because our eyes shoot out beams of light. Of course, this is backward: We see because light enters our eyes. But the idea persisted nevertheless for at least 10 centuries: A 2002 study found that up to 67 percent of college students believed eyes emit rather than receive light. _______________________

| Banner Of The Rebellion - When The Odds Are In Our Favor Everyone Wins Posted: 22 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST Banner Of The Rebellion by Adria.Wells While everyone is obsessed with that war in the stars and the intergalactic rebellion born from the conflict it's important to remember there's another equally important rebellion taking place here on Earth. This one doesn't star Jedis and Siths using the Force to fight, nor does it involve crazy alien critters and a sea of stormtroopers clad in white, because this rebellion is only for hungry humans. The Hunger Games have created a need for a new type of hero, one who simply empowers the people into action rather than taking down the bad guys all by herself, and although the rebel Katniss isn't as flashy as those light saber sporting space guys her story is far more important because it shows us what to do when people in high places try to clip our wings... Let the games begin with this Banner Of The Rebellion t-shirt by Adria.Wells, it's the stylish way to declare your independence. Visit Adria.Wells's Facebook fan page, official website, Twitter and Tumblr, then head on over to her NeatoShop for more geek-tastic designs:

| A Spinning Wheel of The Wheel of Time Posted: 22 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST In Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderon's high fantasy series The Wheel of Time, history is cyclical. The ages of man turn, one to another, and back again. So does this amazing piece of woodworking by Tumblr user hubsy91. This unique bookcase, which holds the books in the series, spins freely. As it does so, the books stay level. -via Tor | ||||||||
| Posted: 22 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST “I will finish what you started.” We were all aware of that pledge long before we saw The Force Awakens, because it was a central part of the movie trailer. But we jumped the gun a little in thinking we knew what he meant. This is the latest from Down the Upward Spiral by Corey Giacco. | ||||||||
| Posted: 22 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST Miss Insomnia Tulip of the bakery Lou Lou P's Delights bakes works of art. In the past we've seen loaves of bread that look like cats and pugs and David Hasselhoff naked, as well as a chocolate eclair that looks like Burt Reynolds naked. Now, continuing in her theme of unsettlingly cute breads, she brings us croissants that look like cats. Yes, I know what the top one is doing. | ||||||||
| Posted: 22 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST Two guys, Leland and Holland, were taking a bunch of marijuana from Las Vegas to Bozeman, Montana. The problem is that they indulged in some along the way. Then they got paranoid and became convinced that the police were following them. They were so bothered about it that they called the Rexburg, Idaho, police and asked them to “just end it.” In other words, they turned themselves in. There were no police following the men, but they never caught on to that detail. The police dispatcher was very helpful, as were the policemen who met the two men and arrested them. -via Viral Viral Videos | ||||||||
| Undercover Boss Kylo Ren Gets His Own Action Figure Posted: 21 Jan 2016 11:00 PM PST Adam Driver played the villain Kylo Ren in the most recent Star Wars movie. While hosting Saturday Night Live last weekend, he starred in one of the show's most popular sketches ever: Kylo Ren goes undercover on his own base for a special episode of Undercover Boss. | Police Officer Gets Shot While on Traffic Stop, But Still Issues Ticket Posted: 21 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST Nizaam Alexander, a police officer in Cape Town, South Africa, is not one to let a little annoyance like getting shot in the back distract him from his duties. If he pulls over a driver for a traffic violation, that driver is getting a ticket. The entire incident was caught on Officer Alexander's car's dashboard camera. He pulled over a driver. While talking to him, another man passing by pulled out his gun and tried to rob Alexander. The officer tried to flee, but the man shot him in the back. Alexander returned fire and called for backup. | Man with Stage IV Bone Cancer Rescues Neighbor from Burning House Posted: 21 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST
Dennis Kucia of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin says that he doesn't have the strength to "open a pickle jar." That's because he's now fighting stage IV bone cancer only after recovering from throat cancer 10 years ago. Nonetheless, when Kucia's duplex caught on fire, his work wasn't done after he successfully escaped. He saw that his neighbor hadn't made it out. So Kucia hobbled inside on his crutches. He found his neighbor on the floor, surrounded by flames. Kucia dropped his crutches, grabbed the man by his collar, and dragged him out of the house. Kucia then went to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. KTIV talked to Kucia about what motivates him:

| Poodle Mix Knows Exactly What to Do with the Last of the Milk Posted: 21 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST When adorable poodle mix Coco Hammond is presented with a milk bottle that has milk left in it, she looks at it as a tasty puzzle to be solved. She paws and turns the cap until she pops it off, and then feeds herself the bottle as if she's both mom and baby. Way to work it, Coco! Via Tastefully Offensive | ||||||||
| Exotic Magnetism - A Unique Perspective Often Leads To Incredible Discoveries Posted: 21 Jan 2016 05:00 PM PST History has really done a discredit to Nikolai Tesla's name, because he was hip to some scientific secrets even the eggheads of today haven't quite figured out. One of his greatest discoveries was dubbed exotic magnetism, which changed the face of particle physics forever, and he owed it all to his white pigeon friend Blank. Tesla was a unique figure, built to change the way mankind sees science and discovery, and he would fall to pieces if he saw how we've turned our backs on his ingenious inventions thanks to a snake named Edison! Celebrate the awesomeness brought into our lives by one extremely intelligent man with this Exotic Magnetism t-shirt by Pacalin, it's sure to spark some conversations with your fellow Tesla fans. | Witness the Sweet Friendship Between a Man and a Young Rescue Elephant Posted: 21 Jan 2016 04:00 PM PST Six-year-old Kham La, the juvenile elephant shown in the video above, is a resident of Elephant Nature Park in the Chang Mai province of Thailand. Darrick, a tractor driver at the site, has become Kham La's favorite human. Whenever she spots Darrick, the young elephant makes a beeline to him and, under the watchful eyes of her herd, she gets attention lavished upon her in the form of pets and softly spoken greetings. Kham La had an unfortunate past of being taken from her mom and subjected to being "broken,” a way to make elephants submit to human demands, and subsequently trained as a performer. Thankfully, the youngster was rescued and is now free to roam (and choose friends) as she sees fit. What a wonderful ending to what could have been a tragic story! Via Slate | ||||||||

This is the Gooderham Building, also known as the Flatiron Building in Toronto. Completed in 1892, it was originally the headquarters for Gooderham & Worts distillery. It’s a historic landmark now, but still has working offices inside, and a pub in the basement. Let’s take a look at the backside.
The cool trompe l'oeil mural was painted by Derek Michael Besant in 1998. The name of it is, surprisingly, The Flatiron Mural. The image mirrors the Perkins Building across the street. It sure adds a point of interest to a plain rear wall! -via reddit

| Bathing in 500 Pounds of Putty Posted: 21 Jan 2016 01:00 PM PST You probably remember Vat19 for their strange and enormous candies. They also sell putty of all kinds. For a publicity stunt, they filled a bathtub with clear putty to see what sitting in it would be like, You can’t really call it “bathing,” despite using a bathtub. This was not a good idea for the volunteer. They had to speed up the video of him sinking into it because it took so long! He could barely breath, because the stuff is barely liquid. Getting out was much more difficult. It does look cool, though. -via Geeks Are Sexy | ||||||||

| Polar Bear Cub at Toronto Zoo is Stealing Hearts Posted: 21 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST
Due to the disappearing sea ice, experts estimate that there are only 20,000-25,000 polar bears in existence. Scientists predict the worst case scenario being the loss of two-thirds of the polar bear population by the year 2050. The species is classified as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. | 24 Historical Inaccuracies in Disney Movies Posted: 21 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST I’m sure you’re shocked! shocked! I say, to find that Disney took artistic liberties in their animated films. They aren’t quite historically correct. I also hear that some of them aren’t even faithful to the original fairy tale they’re based on. Okay, we aren’t all that surprised, but it is neat to find out the details behind those liberties, and what the real story was. John Green fills us in on quite a few of them in this week’s mental_floss List Show.

| Jacob Tremblay’s Acceptance Speech Posted: 21 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST In the midst of awards season, you may have missed the Critics Choice Awards that were bestowed last weekend. No worries, here is the highlight of the evening. Jacob Tremblay was named Best Young Actor for his role in the movie Room. He is nine years old. Tremblay’s acceptance speech is more than adorable. He’s well-spoken, humble, and gracious, and there’s a few points that would only apply to such a young winner, like the microphone being too tall and his plans for the trophy. -via Viral Viral Videos | ||||||||

| “Love Me Do”: The Beatles First Record Posted: 21 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST
I didn't know it myself, but October 5, 1962 was a hugely significant date in the history of pop culture. It was on this date that the first official Beatles record was released, and also, the first James Bond film Dr. No with the great Sean Connery, was released. Has there ever been a more incredible date in the history of pop culture?

| Posted: 21 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST Oh look! Your brain is back, interrupting your sleep again, in the worst possible way. While you dream, memories that you’ve actively attempted to bury force their way up from the grave to humiliate you once again. It’s been said that dreaming is your body’s way of doing some mental housecleaning. If that’s the way it is, I would rather just get used to a messy house. This is the latest comic from Chaos Life. |
