| The Sailor Scouts Scaled to the Relative Sizes of Their Planets Posted: 25 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST 50 moons could fit inside the Earth and 1,321 Earths could fit inside Jupiter, so Sailor Jupiter is 66,050 times the size of Sailor Moon. This chart by Twitter member Sario572 scales the Sailor Scouts in the anime series Sailor Moon to the relative size of the planets that they represent. From right to left, they are Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Saturn, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Moon, and . . . I honesty don't know about the last two. You can see a much larger version here. -via Richard Eisenbeis | ||||||||
| Only Six Actors Have Ever Been Nominated Twice For The Same Role Posted: 25 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST Actors who win an Oscar are either lucky or part of a rigged process, depending on how you view the Academy and the way they've voted in the past, but winning an Oscar more than once sure makes you seem lucky. And if that's true then actors who are nominated twice for the same role are surely the luckiest of them all. And while nobody has ever won two Oscars for playing the same character only six actors have ever received more than one Academy Award nomination for playing the same role. This year Sylvester Stallone was nominated for playing Rocky Balboa in Creedis, becoming the sixth star to join this super exclusive club that includes Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Peter O'Toole, Bing Crosby and Cate Blanchett. -Via Smithsonian | ||||||||

| Chroma Crisis: A Splatoon Fight Posted: 25 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST Two painting crews show up at the same job, leading to a fight. They have a variety of weapons at their disposal: paint guns, sprayers, rollers, even brushes for hand-to-hand combat. Their available ammo is, of course, paint. Bring it on! The glorious mess will take you back to your paintball days. If only we had such implements of destruction then! And paint someone else paid for! -via Geeks Are Sexy | ||||||||
| Cyborg Spermbots Could Deliver Drugs Where Needed Posted: 25 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST
Medical researchers at the Dresden Institute for Integrative Nanosciences wanted to find new ways to deliver drugs to targeted parts of the body. Prof. Oliver G. Schmidt led the search for what he calls a "biological motor"--a microscopic delivery system. Human sperm cells are very fast, strong, and determined swimmers. They're easily available in large quantities. So the researchers realized that if pharmaceutical payloads could be attached to these cells and then the sperm aimed in a particular direction, they could be used to treat illnesses. | 22 Things You See In Nearly Every Roleplaying Game Posted: 24 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST Most roleplaying games either totally railroad the player, like the Final Fantasy series, or they let the player do what they please in an open world, like the Fallout or Elder Scrolls series. Though seemingly as different as can be both types of RPGs, and pretty much all video games with roleplaying elements, have some rather comical elements in common. There's the party member who dies in the storyline despite having been resurrected dozens of times in battle, the armor that turns into a bikini when equipped on a female character, and the sewer full of hidden treasures. Because every stinky sewer must be full of hidden gems, right?

| "‘A Worm Fell into My Mouth. I Gagged’: My Life as a Badger" Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST
Charles Foster has long been fascinated with the lives of animals. But reading about them in books or observing them in the wild wasn't enough for him. He wanted to do more than simply examine how an animal lives its daily life. Foster wanted to experience it himself. That's why, for a week, he lived in a remote area of Nova Scotia as a badger. He ate worms and grubs, dug a den in the dirt and slept inside, and tried to mimic the physical movement of a wild badger as much as possible. Simon Hattenstone of The Guardian talked to Foster about his musteline adventure:
Foster has written a book about his experiences as a badger, a fox, a deer, a swift, and an otter. It's called Being a Beast. You can find an excerpt covering his badger time here. He took along his 8-year old son, Tom, for this adventure. Foster writes:

| All of the Now-Famous X-Files Guest Stars You May Have Forgotten About Posted: 24 Jan 2016 04:00 PM PST
When a show becomes popular to the point that most expect it to be visible for years to come in repeats, syndication, and possible feature films, just about every working actor fancies a turn as a guest star. Whether the actor is already well known or has yet to have his or her big break, the idea of a guest role on the show of the moment is certainly an attractive prospect.
| Which Came First: The Product or the Egg? Posted: 24 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST Many of the internet generation look back at the iconic L’eggs package -the egg- nostalgically as a toy discarded by their mothers. The introduction of L’eggs in 1971 was much more than that. It was revolutionary. My first experience with sheer stockings involved a grown-up lesson in garter belts, which brought their own kind of pain, plus it was extremely difficult to find stockings that fit properly. When the stretchy, form-fitting, mass consumer pantyhose were introduced, we cared less for the packaging than the product. Yet the packaging was brilliant, and we’ll never forget it. For that, we can thank graphic designer Roger Ferriter.
It wasn’t only the design, but the marketing behind it that also helped L’eggs become a sensation. Read about the genius that went into L’eggs at Cooper Hewitt. -via Metafilter
| Yes, This Is a Real Hood Ornament Posted: 24 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST The French carmaker Citroën was named after its founder, André-Gustave Citroën. But it's pretty close to citron, which is the French word for "lemon." This custom hood ornament up for auction by Bonhams was made in 1923. It shows a Citroen 5CV Torpedo erupting out of a lemon. -via Marilyn Terrell | ||||||||

| Posted: 24 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST Aren’t they just cute as buttons? These twins dressed up in full military regalia for their portrait, complete with striped stockings, lace cuffs, and pointy helmets. Although this is a popular picture, I can’t find out anything about these particular twins, or how old the picture is. Did their family have military uniforms made just for the portrait? Or did they have the uniforms and drums for make-believe play? Was this common for upper-class families? Or were the two boys circus performers? It’s possible; another picture in the collection shows young twin trapeze artists. See 23 Victorian and Edwardian portraits of twins at Vintage Everyday. -via Everlasting Blort | ||||||||

To get through heavy snowfall, the bison living at Yellowstone National Park walk single-file. The line leader pushes through the snow, clearing a path for followers. They take turns in the front position, letting herd members rest along the journey. -via Kevin D. Williamson |
