The Sailor Scouts Scaled to the Relative Sizes of Their Planets

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

50 moons could fit inside the Earth and 1,321 Earths could fit inside Jupiter, so Sailor Jupiter is 66,050 times the size of Sailor Moon. This chart by Twitter member Sario572 scales the Sailor Scouts in the anime series Sailor Moon to the relative size of the planets that they represent.

From right to left, they are Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Saturn, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Moon, and . . . I honesty don't know about the last two.

You can see a much larger version here.

Only Six Actors Have Ever Been Nominated Twice For The Same Role

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

Actors who win an Oscar are either lucky or part of a rigged process, depending on how you view the Academy and the way they've voted in the past, but winning an Oscar more than once sure makes you seem lucky.

And if that's true then actors who are nominated twice for the same role are surely the luckiest of them all.

And while nobody has ever won two Oscars for playing the same character only six actors have ever received more than one Academy Award nomination for playing the same role.

This year Sylvester Stallone was nominated for playing Rocky Balboa in Creedis, becoming the sixth star to join this super exclusive club that includes Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Peter O'Toole, Bing Crosby and Cate Blanchett.

Cyborg Spermbots Could Deliver Drugs Where Needed

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST

(Image: IFW Dresden)

Medical researchers at the Dresden Institute for Integrative Nanosciences wanted to find new ways to deliver drugs to targeted parts of the body. Prof. Oliver G. Schmidt led the search for what he calls a "biological motor"--a microscopic delivery system.

Human sperm cells are very fast, strong, and determined swimmers. They're easily available in large quantities. So the researchers realized that if pharmaceutical payloads could be attached to these cells and then the sperm aimed in a particular direction, they could be used to treat illnesses. Discovery reports:

To create these tiny robots, the scientists first had to catch a few. First, they designed microtubes, which are essentially thin sheets of titanium and iron — which have a magnetic property — rolled into conical tubes, with one end wider than the other. Next, they put the microtubes into a solution in a Petri dish and added bovine sperm cells, which are similar size to human sperm. When a live sperm entered the wider end of the tube, it became trapped down near the narrow end. The scientists also closed the wider end, so the sperm wouldn’t swim out. And because sperm are so determined, the trapped cell pushed against the tube, moving it forward.

Next, the scientists used a magnetic field to guide the tube in the direction they wanted it to go, relying on the sperm for the propulsion.

Each spermbot is capable of traveling up to 100 micrometers per second, which is similar to a 6-foot-tall human swimming  160 ft (50 meters) in 14 seconds.

22 Things You See In Nearly Every Roleplaying Game

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

Most roleplaying games either totally railroad the player, like the Final Fantasy series, or they let the player do what they please in an open world, like the Fallout or Elder Scrolls series.

Though seemingly as different as can be both types of RPGs, and pretty much all video games with roleplaying elements, have some rather comical elements in common.

There's the party member who dies in the storyline despite having been resurrected dozens of times in battle, the armor that turns into a bikini when equipped on a female character, and the sewer full of hidden treasures.

Because every stinky sewer must be full of hidden gems, right?

Shots of NYC as "Ghost Town" During Blizzard 2016

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 08:00 PM PST

Central Park

As of this morning New York City streets, previously closed, have reopened. Public transportation is being restored as the city rallies after a dangerous blizzard, the largest since 1869, dumped 26.8 inches of snow on Central Park, and over 30 inches on outerlying areas.

Many news articles have referred to the city, when shut down and under a travel ban, as resembling a "ghost town." During that time many residents took to social media, posting photographs of these most quiet and unusual circumstances in New York City.

Posted here are some examples from Instagram and Twitter. Search under hashtags blizzardblizzard2016 and nyc to see more amazing shots like these.

"‘A Worm Fell into My Mouth. I Gagged’: My Life as a Badger"

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

(Photo: Felicity McCabe/The Guardian)

Charles Foster has long been fascinated with the lives of animals. But reading about them in books or observing them in the wild wasn't enough for him. He wanted to do more than simply examine how an animal lives its daily life. Foster wanted to experience it himself.

That's why, for a week, he lived in a remote area of Nova Scotia as a badger. He ate worms and grubs, dug a den in the dirt and slept inside, and tried to mimic the physical movement of a wild badger as much as possible. Simon Hattenstone of The Guardian talked to Foster about his musteline adventure:

Did he enjoy it? “Enjoy isn’t the word. But I could feel a lot of toxins were being washed out. That seeded in me something – that in living the life we normally live, we are living a life that isn’t natural. And in order to be properly human, we’ve got to be properly animal.” Foster pauses and looks at me. “Do you think I’m insane?”

Foster has written a book about his experiences as a badger, a fox, a deer, a swift, and an otter. It's called Being a Beast. You can find an excerpt covering his badger time here. He took along his 8-year old son, Tom, for this adventure. Foster writes:

We stumbled up the bank and hollowed out a nest in the bracken. Lying up outside the sett during the day isn’t unbadgerish, although it’s far from the rule. Badgers sometimes, just like we did, crawl into dense vegetation and lie there until dusk comes. We don’t know why; perhaps there’s tension at home and they can’t bear the thought of a day close to wretched, cantankerous, odious X. And sometimes, no doubt, they’ve been caught short a long way from home and don’t want to run the gauntlet of early-morning dog walkers.

Tom needed to sleep, so he did, curled foetally on bracken, his paws, earth-brown from digging, clasped under his chin. I, too, needed to sleep, so I didn’t. We had to change our rhythm to that of the badgers, which meant sleeping in the day, but, at least at first, I found the sett a threatening place. Was this an old fear of burial? A worm fell into my mouth. I gagged quietly and went back to sleep.

All of the Now-Famous X-Files Guest Stars You May Have Forgotten About

When a show becomes popular to the point that most expect it to be visible for years to come in repeats, syndication, and possible feature films, just about every working actor fancies a turn as a guest star. Whether the actor is already well known or has yet to have his or her big break, the idea of a guest role on the show of the moment is certainly an attractive prospect.

In honor of The X-Files miniseries making its return to the airwaves on January 24, the linked article has compiled a list of some notable roles played by former guest stars of the TV series, which ran from 1993-2002. See a video and read descriptions of the guest star appearances  including a look at turns by Bryan Cranston, Peter Boyle, Seth Green and more  here.

Which Came First: The Product or the Egg?

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST

Many of the internet generation look back at the iconic L’eggs package -the egg- nostalgically as a toy discarded by their mothers. The introduction of L’eggs in 1971 was much more than that. It was revolutionary. My first experience with sheer stockings involved a grown-up lesson in garter belts, which brought their own kind of pain, plus it was extremely difficult to find stockings that fit properly. When the stretchy, form-fitting, mass consumer pantyhose were introduced, we cared less for the packaging than the product. Yet the packaging was brilliant, and we’ll never forget it. For that, we can thank graphic designer Roger Ferriter.

The anecdote describes a flustered Ferriter who, on the morning of his marketing and package design pitch to Hanes, decided his current scheme wasn’t quite creative enough. Ferriter, hoping to be inspired by the product by experiencing it in a new way, tested pantyhose’s compactness by scrunching them up in the palm of his hand. Upon considering the wad of hose in his clenched fist, Ferriter was struck by the idea that the package should resemble an egg, “nature’s perfect package, a symbol of newness and freshness,” which, pun-ily enough, happens to rhyme with “leg.” He added an apostrophe for a “touch of French flair” and this jeu de mots gave rise to one of the most iconic brand logos and package designs to grace grocery shelves in the twentieth century.

It wasn’t only the design, but the marketing behind it that also helped L’eggs become a sensation. Read about the genius that went into L’eggs at Cooper Hewitt. -via Metafilter

Yes, This Is a Real Hood Ornament

The French carmaker Citroën was named after its founder, André-Gustave Citroën. But it's pretty close to citron, which is the French word for "lemon." This custom hood ornament up for auction by Bonhams was made in 1923. It shows a Citroen 5CV Torpedo erupting out of a lemon.

Monkey Adopts Puppy, Cuteness Ensues

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

Image: Facebook

An unlikely bond between a
rhesus macaque monkey and a puppy warmed hearts and brought out curious crowds in Erode, India earlier this month. The monkey apparently took the stray pup under her wing and off she went.

The macaque made sure her adopted baby ate well, and kept a tight hold on him as she traveled both on the ground and up in the treetops. Locals who found the pair endearing set food out for them and watched as the monkey had the puppy eat before her.

There are now unconfirmed reports that local officials may have taken the puppy away from mama monkey, which, though a sad parting, is likely better for the puppy in the long run.

See additional photos — including one of the monkey flying through the trees with the puppy under her arm — and read more on the story here.

BB-8 Snowdroid

8 inches of snow has fallen on Nashville, Tennessee. So when life hands you snow, make snowmen. Jeremy Skates and his friend made this BB-8 droid from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Hopefully he can roll through snow as easily as he traverses the sand on Jakku.

The Little Drummer Boys

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Aren’t they just cute as buttons? These twins dressed up in full military regalia for their portrait, complete with striped stockings, lace cuffs, and pointy helmets. Although this is a popular picture, I can’t find out anything about these particular twins, or how old the picture is. Did their family have military uniforms made just for the portrait? Or did they have the uniforms and drums for make-believe play? Was this common for upper-class families? Or were the two boys circus performers? It’s possible; another picture in the collection shows young twin trapeze artists. See 23 Victorian and Edwardian portraits of twins at Vintage Everyday. -via Everlasting Blort
