| Many Households in Flint, MI Are Being Charged $100 per Month for Toxic Water
Petition — No bills for toxic water! Dear Indiana,
Flint, Michigan's water crisis keeps getting even more outrageous.
Not only have the people of Flint been subject to toxic drinking water for over a year, but they are expected to pay for the toxic water flowing from their faucets. Some households could face bills of over $100 per month and could have their water service cut off for not paying for the very water that was poisoning their families.
Sign the petition to urge Flint's Mayor and City Administrator to put a moratorium on toxic water bills and shut-offs! I will hand deliver your petition signatures to the mayor this Thursday.
After drinking water laced with lead for over a year, children have brain damage from lead poisoning. The water coming out of faucets is STILL toxic because the city's pipes are permanently corroded.
Outrageously, the people of Flint are still being forced to pay for toxic water — often more than $100 per month! On top of that, over 1,000 residents have received shut-off notices for not being able to pay for water that was poisoning their families. People still need water for basic sanitation like flushing the toilet and washing hands. Tell the City of Flint that enough is enough — people should not have to pay for toxic water!
The water pipes in Flint are permanently damaged and will continue to leach lead until they are replaced. Replacing all of the city's pipes could cost more than $1 billion — far more than has currently been promised to the ailing city.
Problems that contributed to the crisis in Flint are common.
Water systems all over this country are aging, yet funding for public water systems has been slashed time and again. As a result, cities are forced to make decisions about how to get the funding they need — like by increasing rates to levels so high that residents can't pay, or in Flint's case, switching the drinking water from a safe source to a very polluted river to save a buck.
We need to act now to prevent another disaster. Food & Water Watch will continue to fight, not just in Flint, but also in communities across the country for better investment in water infrastructure. The federal government must prioritize funding to upgrade water systems so our cities and towns can provide their residents with safe, affordable drinking water.
No family should ever be put in the situation that Flint families are facing, period. Will you help ensure that Flint residents don't have to pay another penny for toxic drinking water?
