Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage

Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle and the Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Intimate Apparel is a full-length drama by Lynn Nottage. A turn-of-the-century black seamstress uses her gifted hands to fashion her dreams in an era when the cut of one's dress and the colour of one's skin determined the course of one's life.

The time is 1905, the place New York City, where Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. Her skills and discretion are much in demand, and she has managed to stuff a goodly sum of money into her quilt over the years. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. Her plan is to find the right man and use the money she's saved to open a beauty parlour where black women will be treated as royally as the white women she sews for. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Being illiterate, Esther has one of her patrons respond to the letters, and over time the correspondence becomes increasingly intimate until George persuades her that they should marry, sight unseen. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth, and his heart with her, but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. When George arrives in New York, however, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be, and he absconds with Esther's savings, frittering it away on whores and liquor. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.

The Mountaintop by Katori Hall

Winner of the 2010 Olivier Award for Best New Play

The Mountaintop is a full-length drama by Katori Hall. A gripping historical-fantastical two-hander portraying events the night before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in Memphis, following the delivery of his memorable "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has stood high upon the mountaintop and he's seen the Promised Land. But on this rainy night in April 3, 1968, the civil rights leader mostly feels footsore, weary and sick at heart. After delivering one of his most memorable speeches, an exhausted Dr. King retires to room 306 in the now-famous Lorraine Motel. He calls down for room service while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious young maid arrives with coffee – and an unexpected message – King is forced to confront his past and the future of his people. Katori Hall's inspired and inspiring play was a sell-out on West End and Broadway stages. It tracks not only one long night in American history but, in an astonishing finale, hurtles us through forty-five years of civil rights into the twenty-first century.

The Mountaintop was first produced in 2009 to great acclaim at Theatre 503 in London, and transferred to the Trafalgar Studios in the West End of London. It opened in 2011 at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York City, starring Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson.
