Some photographers, artists and film auteurs  the late, great Stanley Kubrick, for example  have made careers in part upon bringing the beauty of symmetry to film technique. Some of the best examples are elegant and striking in their simplicity.

On a smaller scale, such are the shots appearing on the Instagram account Symmetrical Monsters. Contributors are steadily showing up with arresting shots such as the ones featured here. Enjoy and then check out Symmetrical Monsters on Instagram for more. This is certainly a feed to follow for photography enthusiasts. Via My Modern Met

AA Milne and the Curse of Pooh Bear

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST

Author AA Milne wrote seven full-length novels in his life. He also wrote regularly for Punch magazine and was eventually an assistant editor there. Milne also served as the editor of Granta magazine. He wrote five non-fiction books and 34 plays. But Milne is almost solely remembered for the four short children’s books he wrote about his son about a stuffed bear named Winnie the Pooh.

The children’s books added up to just 70,000 words, the length of an average novel. But their enormous fame erased the memory of all the work he’d already done.

The success of the Pooh stories also undermined the reception of the non-juvenile work Milne wrote later. “It seems to me now that if I write anything less realistic, less straightforward than ‘The cat sat on the mat’, I am ‘indulging in a whimsy’,” Milne wrote in the introduction to his play The Ivory Door in 1928. “Indeed if I did say that the cat sat on the mat (as well it might), I should be accused of being whimsical about cats; not a real cat, but just a little make-believe pussy, such as the author of Winnie-the-Pooh invents so charmingly for our delectation.”

Pooh illustrator EH Shepard suffered the same fate, being typecast as a children’s book illustrator, when he’d made his name as a political cartoonist before. But the worst of the typecasting curse fell to Milne’s son Christopher Robin Milne. Read about how Winnie the Pooh followed him around all his life at BBC Culture. -via Digg

These Pics Prove Some People Are Geniuses When They're Drunk

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 01:00 AM PST

There are some aspects of the human mind that will forever remain a mystery, and a few of those aspects pertain to how our brains perform when we're intoxicated.

(Image Link)

Someone who's sharp as a razor when sober may fall apart after only a few drinks, becoming a mindless, drooling husk of a human, and yet sometimes people who are normally a bit mindless become MacGyver when they're drunk.

(Image Link)

These drunk geniuses know every hungover person needs food badly, every toilet needs arm rests and that bicycle of theirs could really use a handy pizza slice holder, for those long rides home from the bar.

Could You Outrun a Hungry Tyrannosaurus Rex?

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST

(Image: Universal Pictures)

If you're with someone at the time, then, like the old joke says, you don't have to outrun the T-Rex. You just have to outrun your friend.

But what if there's no one else available to distract the hungry Tyrannosaurus Rex? Good news, everyone! According to calculations that scientists made from preserved footprints, you can probably outrun a T-Rex--at least for a short distance. Discover magazine reports:

The researchers estimated the walking speed of the T. rex to be 2.7 to 5 mph, which is much slower than, say, Usain Bolt, who clocks in a maximum sprinting speed of 27.3 mph. For context, the average walking speed for a human hovers around 3 mph. The calculated speed indicates T. rex was traveling at a slow trot, and at a speed similar to other large carnivorous dinosaurs. Still, even when walking, tyrannosaurs moved covered more ground in a single step than the large herbivores that they coexisted with and presumably hunted. Researchers published their Glenrock trackway findings in the journal Cretaceous Research.

But how does this fit with previous estimates of T. rex speed, based on other lines of evidence? Tony Martin, a trace fossil expert and professor at Emory University and unaffiliated with the study, said the new findings are in line with past estimates.

“Biomechanical studies of tyrannosaur bones, combined with calculations of their musculature and computer models, tell us that tyrannosaurs were more suited for walking and probably could not outrun, say, a jeep,” says Martin. [...]

Based on the evidence, it seems like anyone in decent shape could’ve outrun a T. rex.

The Cemetery Atop on Oil Refinery

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

The oldest Jewish cemetery in Curaçao is Beth Haim. The oldest readable tombstone is dated to the year 5428, which by the gregorian calendar is 1668 CE. There may well be older stones that can no longer be read. No graves have been added to the cemetery since the refinery went in. It’s open to the public, but no one except refinery employees are allowed past that point. See pictures and a video of the Beth Haim cemetery at Curaçao for 91 Days.

Most Relaxed Guy Ever Gets Shot in Chest, Casually Chats with Reporter

Devon Hawkins was just chilling at home in Quincy, Illinois, drinking a bit, when someone shot through his back window, hitting him in the chest. He casually chatted with KHQA news reporter Reyna Harvey about the incident like he's describing a trip to a local grocery store. If it's a big deal to Hawkins, it's hard to tell because he's incredibly relaxed about the entire incident.

Redditors Reveal Odd Conversations They've Had With Agents at the Canadian Border

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

Image: CBC.CA

In a now-archived thread from last summer, Redditors weighed in on the strangest questions or comments they received from agents while crossing the Canadan border. A few are quips from American personnel, some are Canadian. Some of the funniest bits are the responses to the guards' questions and not the questions themselves. A few examples are included here; read the rest at Reddit.

Going To A Funeral
A favorite response I saw was from a man who was going to Canada for a funeral. They had a floral arrangement in the car and were dressed in dark clothing. When they told the border guard they were going to a funeral, the guy said, 'for what purpose?

Going into Canada: How long have you had that beard? I gave him a sarcastic reply about my fiancee (who was next to me) hating it and that spiraled into a couple minute conversation consisting mostly about how his wife makes him shave everyday.

Got Gas?
About 25 years ago I get pulled off for a random check. The agent roots through the items in my trunk and pulls out a gas can that had a few drops in it. Enough to tell that there was a small bit of liquid in there.
Agent opens the can and takes a huge whiff. Looking slightly light-headed, the guy says, "Is this gas in here?"

The smart-ass in me alllllmost said something, but I caught myself.

Un-American
Friend went drinking in Windsor and his sister was passed out drunk in the back seat. Needless to say, she couldn't answer the "Citizenship?" question, so they had to go inside.
They're finally able to wake her and drag her inside into a very bright room and she's not happy at all.
'What's your name?'asks the guard. She says her name and the guard says, "That doesn't sound American!"
Well, she was a mean drunk and replied, "What the f*** do you mean that doesn't sound American?!" as my friend winced.
"Oh, you can go," said the border guard, figuring only a real American would cuss out a border agent.

Bear sighting:

After I had gotten a bear in northern Quebec and was coming back across into detroit, my dad explained that we had a bear in the back. the boarder guard... "is it alive?"

Watch This Guy Show Off His Slinky Kung Fu Skills

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST

The Slinky was kind of a dumb toy, unless your house was full of staircases and that's where you liked to hang out all day, but the guy in this video somehow makes the Slinky seem cool.

Of course, give nearly any object to a practitioner of kung fu and they'll make it look like the coolest weapon ever, a fact which surprisingly even applies to a rainbow colored Slinky.

(YouTube Link)

The act aired on Chinese national television, where the guy's moves were called out by the announcer just like any normal kung fu competition, which leads me to believe the Slinky may be the next big fad in the world of martial arts.

The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

A rare book dealer purchased an old hand-written journal at an estate sale and sent it to the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University. The meticulous script on 304 pages of antique paper was intriguing, and the text even more so. It appeared to be a first-hand account of one Austin “Rob” Reed, titled The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict. Reed tells about his life in a Manhattan juvenile facility and later Auburn State Prison. He completed the journal in 1858.

“The big question was what exactly we were looking at,” says Caleb Smith, a literature professor at Yale, and one of three experts asked by the Beinecke to evaluate the manuscript. “Was it a novel? Was it a memoir?”

An expert in prison literature, Smith felt sure that the book was written by someone with firsthand knowledge of 19th-century correctional facilities. And if Haunted Convict was a genuine account, it would be groundbreaking: the earliest-known narrative penned by an African-American prisoner. Moreover, it had been unearthed at a propitious time. Nationwide, criticism of the costly and overcrowded prison system was growing, as was anger at soaring incarceration rates, especially among young black men.

The experts at Yale set out to authenticate the journal and find out more about Reed. Read about that process at Smithsonian. The short version of Reed’s life is at The History Blog. You can download the original manuscript at Yale University’s Beinecke Digital Collections. And the book is now available at Amazon. -via Metafilter

Punk Rock and Metal Cats Decked Out in Vests

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

Self-expression is a huge part of the punk and metal scene and sharing your favorite bands and other interests on your vest or jacket is one of the best ways to express yourself. Of course, just because these scenes are mostly made up of humans, that doesn't mean cats don't know how to rock just as hard.

Over at both Buzzfeed and Metal Sucks, there are a few great collections of punk and metal kitties decked out in their most rocking vests. They sure look cute, but with their vests and attitudes, these cats aren't to be messed with.

14 Things You May Not Know About Gordon Ramsay

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

Gordon Ramsay, aside from crafting his take on haute cuisine, has also carved for himself an image that's more rough and tumble than most celebrity chefs. If you think he's the chef that's most likely to cuss you out in any given scenario, you're likely right.

But that way of living has apparently kept him on the receiving end of some rough surprises himself. The linked listing of fourteen different facts about Gordon Ramsay spills at least one, such as the time he was threatened at gunpoint during a shoot:

5. He Was Once Threatened at Gunpoint While Filming.
While working on The Big Fish Fight in Costa Rica, Ramsay and his crew devoted an episode to investigating fishermen who were illegally killing and selling sharks to make shark fin soup. The crew climbed aboard a fishing boat, only for Ramsay to find a sack of shark fins hidden under the ship's hull while he was swimming. When he threw the sack on board and called the fishermen out, an argument erupted, leading some men to point rifles at them when they got to the dock to pressure them to stop filming. Ultimately, the police urged them to leave the country. "They said, 'if you set foot in there, they'll stab you,'" Ramsay recalls.

But that doesn't mean Ramsay isn't in touch with his "softer side." For example:

3. He Believes in the Power of a Good Cry.
"I think crying is important," he told Fox News. "Not crying, not showing that emotion, bottling it up can lead to dangerous things." Ramsay has no problem with the contestants—who are often as young as 8 or 9 years old—on Masterchef Junior crying on the show, though he admits that it's hard to see them get upset over their mistakes.

Super Bakery Bros.

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Princess Peach made a cake for Mario, and that became the inspiration for this project. A collaboration between filmmaker Aron Mani and his sister, baker Jami Behrends, results in a stop-motion game video made entirely of cake!

(YouTube link)

As you can guess, the sequence required a lot of cake. That’s confirmed in the behind-the-scenes video, where we see 18 different cake Marios in different positions. I imagine they also had backups for each of them. But things really went into overbaking mode when the whole multi-layer cake had to be replaced!

You might cringe at the very last sequence, but remember, they’ve just been through more cake than you will see in a year. -via Tastefully Offensive

The Little Monster by Geluckfan

Cookie found himself all alone on a little planet that was nowhere near Sesame Street, and at first it felt like total freedom. But despite the absence of nosy humans and preachy monsters trying to get Cookie to go on a diet something about the little planet just didn't feel right. Cookie searched the entire surface but found no sign of life, and he was starting to feel mighty lonesome. His appetite grew as the lonely days passed, but Cookie had no food so he'd resigned himself to starving until he felt like eating dirt. The day finally came when he could wait no more, so he dug in to the ground and scooped a big bite up to his mouth, discovering to his delight that it wasn't made out of dirt at all...the planet was one giant chocolate chip cookie!

Heavy-Sleeping Cat Won't Wake up, No Matter How Many Mice Crawl on Her

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

Mimo the cat is asleep. And when she sleeps, she's totally out. So the first mouse crawls over her. There's no response. More mice come out to play . . .

. . . and Mimo doesn't notice! Eventually, 21 mice climb on top of Mimo, who doesn't stir.

They should use this time for something more productive, such as raiding the cheese supply!
