| Posted: 01 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PST Randal Munro of the webcomic xkcd illustrates how much we Americans consume of various fluids as if they were conveyed, like water and oil, through pipelines. He's got everything, including breast milk, glass, and cement. Keep in mind that the top portion is a subset of the bottom portion. Our honey consumption isn't actually a tenth of our petroleum consumption. I am now just a bit distressed that, in the 21st Century, we still haven't figured out a way to move mayonnaise through pipelines. | ||||||||
| Pee-Wee Herman Photoshopped Into Vintage Postcards Posted: 01 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PST Pee-Wee Herman is truly one of the most likable and enduring characters in comedy history, and those of us who grew up loving Pee-Wee are still waiting (im)patiently to see what he does next. Well, we won't have to wait much longer since Pee-Wee's Big Holiday will premiere on Netflix on March 18th, but until then here's Pee-Wee photoshopped into a bunch of vintage postcards courtesy of "professional daydreamer" A. Pants. Isn't there something so right about seeing Pee-Wee tooling along in the old school Autopia cars, shaking his maracas South of the Border, or hitting the slopes with equally stylish fellow Little Richard? | ||||||||
| "Bird's Nest Custody" -- A New Type of Joint Custody for Divorced Parents Posted: 01 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PST
The divorced mother and father share custody. But instead of the child moving from home to home, the child stays in the same home and the parents move in and out. The Telegraph reports that the arrangement probably originated in a Virginia courtroom in 2000. It's spread elsewhere as some split families find it the best way to keep children's lives stable. Attorney Margaret Hatwood in London explains the advantages:
The set up varies from family to family:

| A Cool Collection Of Epic Snow Sculptures Posted: 01 Mar 2016 01:00 AM PST The winter chill will soon give way to the spring thaw, so folks who don't live in a place where it's freezing cold year round will be making the most of the last winter snowstorms. Some will make snow angels, others will pelt people with snowballs, but a select few will use hard packed snow as a sculpting medium, creating some mighty dreamy snow sculptures to amaze and astound. These skilled sculptors use tools and knowhow to transform a seemingly soft medium like snow into remarkably realistic, and surprisingly hard edged, sculptures that will someday melt in the sun. Some snow sculptures are so well made and expertly engineered they look like people could move right in! It's far more common for snow sculptures to be made in the likeness of characters with softer edges, since most snow sculptors started by building snowmen, so crazy cartoon characters are a popular subject matter. Nordic folks adore those cute comic strip characters The Moomins, so it's not surprising to see them in snow sculpture form in the northern lands But rendering the Moomins in a realistic manner, complete with clothing and accessories, takes some serious skills Many snow sculptures look smaller in photographs than they actually are, making it hard to appreciate how much work a team of people put in to making these cool works of art This massive piece, featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse et al., was created by soldiers from Japan's Ground Self Defence Force for the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan And the same soldiers created this giant sculpture of Darth Vader and Stormtroopers last year in Sapporo. Of course, pop culture characters aren't the only subjects who benefit from having softer edges and intricate detail, And when you're paying homage to the beauty of the natural world with snow you gotta keep those edges soft Many of the sculptures featured on this list were photographed at the Harbin International Snow Sculpture Art Expo At the Sun Island Park in downtown Harbin City, China The Snow Sculpture Expo has become the place to see snow sculptures epic in both scale and incredible detail And in case you were wondering about the scale of this magnificent tableau check out the dozen or so people working on the project, they almost look like ants in comparison! Beautiful snow sculptures abound at the Snow Sculpture Expo, which lasts a few months a year And people really enjoy checking out these amazing, epic scale sculptures But that doesn't mean the Expo in Harbin is the only place to see amazing snow sculptures, sometimes they can be seen in our own backyards And a great snow sculptor can bringing SpongeBob's hometown of Bikini Bottom to life on the surface, although a bit of strong sun will put the whole thing underwater again But it seems the sculptures at the Harbin Expo can't be beat in terms of massive scale and beautiful detail. Because those who create the amazing 3D works seen at the Harbin Expo see snow sculpting as a team sport! No matter how many artists work on a snow sculpture they all agree on one thing- the subject matter, like the snow itself, has to be light With lighthearted motifs and a heavy reverence for Mother Nature Fantasy scenes are a popular choice, especially when the piece features both soft and hard edged shapes But no matter who or what the sculptor has chosen as their subject Their incredibly cool sculptures are sure to make people smile And in the end all that hard work always pays off for those gifted sculptors Who freeze their paws off to create an incredible, yet delicate and short-lived, masterpiece made of snow Hopefully this collection of incredible snow sculptures will inspire you to play in the snow more before it all melts away until next winter. | ||||||||

Eric Vekeman of Zegelsem, Belgium wanted to build a garage into his house. The local government said no. He did it anyway. The result is a garage that seamlessly blends in with the wall. It's an incredible piece of engineering and craftsmanship. You can see more photos here and a video of Vekeman opening it at Het Nieuwsblad. -via Super Punch
| 30 Great Actors Who Have Never Been Nominated for an Oscar Posted: 29 Feb 2016 11:00 PM PST
An actor known for his portrayal of eccentric guys, Steve Buscemi has constantly moved with ease between major film studios and indie productions throughout his career, becoming a regular of such directors as the Coen brothers and Quentin Tarantino. Another entry on the list is one of my favorite actors, Australian Guy Pearce: A quiet force of US and Australian cinema, Guy Pearce first became known to audiences as a drag queen in “The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert” (1994), and followed a pretty diverse career ever since. He could have been nominated for “L.A. Confidential” (1997) or “Memento” (2000). Selected filmography: The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert (1994), L.A. Confidential (1997), Memento (2000),The Proposition (2005), The Hurt Locker (2008), The Road (2009), The King’s Speech (2010), Animal Kingdom (2010), Prometheus (2012) Read about 28 more great actors who've never been nominated for an Oscar in this article.
| Why Have We Domesticated Some Animals, But Not Others? Posted: 29 Feb 2016 10:00 PM PST Humanity began in Africa, as did the zebra. Why did we never domesticate it? Why did we instead journey on foot to meet the Eurasian horse and only then mastered and trained an animal for transportation? CGP Grey explains in his latest video. There are certain characteristics of animals that are necessary to either domesticated or tame (which are two distinct concepts) them. He explains what makes the zebra different from the horse and the elephant different from the grizzly bear. | ||||||||
| Toy Boat Launched Off Coast Of South Carolina Ends Up In Wales Posted: 29 Feb 2016 09:00 PM PST Kids and adults alike have grand ideas about where a toy boat will go when they set it afloat in at the beach, but most toy ships simply aren't cut out for a sea voyage and end up either dashed against the rocks or sunk. So when the fourth grade class from St. Andrew's School of Math and Science set the "Carolina Dreamer" free off the coast of South Carolina they had no idea how far it would float before sinking. But that little toy boat proved it was made of the right stuff and somehow survived a 4000 mile trip to Wales, where it was discovered by a mom and her son who were walking along the beach. "We were looking across the waves when it literally sailed right to us," Helen Hinks told the BBC."It was magical." The class was able to track most of the ship's epic eight month voyage with an onboard GPS tracker, and now they're waiting to see if it will survive the return trip home. But Wesley’s teeth grew in splayed out so far that he couldn’t close his mouth properly. Wesley belongs to Molly Moore, who works for her Dad, a veterinarian who is a specialist in veterinary dentistry. | Hamburger Dungeons & Dragons Alignment Chart Posted: 29 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST
The Storm Crow Tavern is a restaurant and bar in Vancouver with a gaming theme. The entire place is filled with board games and Choose Your Own Adventure novels to amuse yourself with while dining. There's a heavy emphasis on fantasy role-playing games. You've got to read the menu, which has appropriate dishes, such as the Tacos of the Damned and Patton Oswalt's Sadness Bowl. If you're not sure what to drink, you can randomly roll a d20 for a $5 Random Shot. These include the Critical Miss and the Grue. Artist Noah Stacey loves the place. When the restaurant decided to open a new location called the Storm Crow Alehouse, he decided to contribute to the decor. He painted 9 burgers with different Dungeons & Dragons alignments. You'll need it. You see, if you don't have a specific burger in mind, you can use a d20 to randomly generate one. -via Tor
| Man Didn't Know This Enormous, Nightmare Inducing Worm Was Living in His Fish Tank Posted: 29 Feb 2016 06:00 PM PST
Such worms can, when small, hide in rocks or coral and go unnoticed, eventually growing to be quite large. They are nocturnal, so therefore are easy to miss. Says gurutek, "I was breaking down the tank (as I was moving it), hence it looking shoddy. That unice was in there 2 years before I noticed, and only noticed because I had whole coral colonies missing after a single evening. I first saw it after I spent a few nights sat up (after lights went out) for about 3 hours per night looking for the critter who was eating my corals. Even when I knew it was there, I only ever saw it 3 times within the space of a year. It hides in the rocks, and only comes out at night, impossible to catch without taking everything out the tank." I used to keep a freshwater aquarium and had a plecostomus grow to a size that scared me. One night I had a nightmare about going on vacation and coming back to find horrifying, prehistoric looking creatures inhabiting my tank. I used to laugh at myself for having that dream. Now it's not so funny.
| Reddit a Thousand Years into the Future Posted: 29 Feb 2016 05:00 PM PST Reddit an open forum utility with a place to discuss everything on every subject. If you can think of it, there's a subreddit (an online forum) for it. It's a central hub for the latest news of the world. Blair Erickson, a redditor, spent 4 years building a hilarious parody of reddit that imagines what the site would look like a thousand years into the future. It's called Reddit 3016. It's a non-stop parade of jokes, both about futurism and the tendencies of reddit. Everything, including the ads, is part of the humor. For example, there's a sidebar promo for the latest Transformers movie, Dark of the Crack. Its tagline is "This time, one of them has a Jamaican accent." Popular subreddits in 2016 are updated to 3016 with discussion boards called Artificial Pro Life Tips and ExplainItLikeImAFireMite. Gizmodo talked to Erickson about the project:
You should go to Reddit 3016 right now and go waste some time like, just like you do on the older reddit.
| The End of the Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar Memes? Posted: 29 Feb 2016 04:00 PM PST Most Best Actor Awards go to someone for a movie they did and that's pretty much it. But last night's Academy Award ceremony was different, because Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar -and the NeatoShop already has a t-shirt about it. More than one, actually.
The internet had a lot of fun lamenting DiCaprio having six Academy Award nominations but no Oscars -until last night, when he won the Best Actor trophy for The Revenant. But the end of an era also means a few more internet nuggets, like this flip book from The Flippist. It shows how he finally got that statuette. The original flip book is up for auction on eBay, with proceeds going to the the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. And then there’s this animation of the years-long saga.
So, do you think that will be the end of the jokes? I doubt it.

| RIP George Kennedy, American Soldier and Actor Posted: 29 Feb 2016 03:15 PM PST
George Kennedy passed away yesterday at the age of 91. Kennedy came from a family of actors and was a child actor himself. Then World War II came along. He served in the Army and then, after the war, stayed in. He served for 15 years before returning to Hollywood. His first big screen role was as a rebel soldier in the 1960 movie Spartacus. He became famous with a supporting role in the 1967 Paul Newman film Cool Hand Luke. I remember him best in the Zucker brothers' series The Naked Gun. Kennedy's obituary in the Washington Post quotes him on his love for his craft:
I've always liked George Kennedy. He always conveyed his characters in a relatable way. He came across as just the sort of guy you'd want to have a beer with. -via Jonah Goldberg
| The BB System - The New Center Of Our Geeky Galaxy Posted: 29 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST Not all star systems are a result of cosmic radiation and galactic explosions, some are made by humanoids who wish to pay homage to someone great. In this case the subject of the homage isn't a someone but rather a something- that brave ball shaped droid BB-8. Without his help poor Rey wouldn't have made it off Jakku alive, and that friend of the force Luke Skywalker would have remained hidden, but thanks to BB-8's efforts we can all rest assured the First Order will get what's coming to them! | Posted: 29 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST Today, February 29, is leap day. It occurs only once every four years and is thus a special occasion. In the Nineteenth Century, in the United States, Leap Day was the one day a quadrennium when it was considered socially acceptable for a woman to propose marriage to a man. Some men took advantage of this fine reversal of fortunes and offered themselves up for the bonds of matrimony. On January 1 of 1884 and 1888, the Chicago newspaper the Daily Inter-Ocean presented a list of eligible bachelors who would entertain proposals on Leap Day. | Guy Gives Honest Interview After Leading Police On 100-Mile-Long Chase Posted: 29 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST Most police chases end in an arrest or the perp's death, and if the lucky criminal makes it out of the ordeal alive they usually just rant angrily while being thrown into the back of a squad car. But the guy in this video was born to be interviewed, and even though he had just led the police on an 100-mile-long chase he was extremely candid about the thrill of the chase and the weed in his pocket. It must be nice to know that your mom's going to see you being interviewed on the news after a grand police chase, wait 'til she tells her Bridge club all about her famous son! -Via FAIL Blog | ||||||||

| These Pompadours Are Out Of Control Posted: 29 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST The pompadour hairstyle bridges the gap between royalty and street punks, since it was named after Madame de Pompadour but was later adopted by Greasers, Rockabilly kids and Zoot Suiters who were seen as lowlifes by mainstream society. Nowadays many of the freewheelin' folks who sport a pomp like to take it as far as they can, their huge hair helping them stand out in a world full of shaved heads and droopy hairdos. Pompadour peacocking has led to the formation of some epic level hair helmets, as exemplified by the Japanese greasers who like to go out dancing in the streets. With any luck the younger generations will see the value of a classic hairstyle and carry on the pompadour tradition! | ||||||||

| In The 19th Century Spam Came Straight To Your Mailbox Posted: 29 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST In the early days of companies trying to sell us stuff we don't want by flooding our mailboxes with junk mail "spam" the seller's goals were typically much simpler. They weren't necessarily trying to scam us out of our paychecks, they were just trying to get people to choose their company over the competition, and felt direct advertising was the ticket to success. Junk mail "spammers" used the postmasters to help them pass along their "important messages" to people in town, in a time when most people were delighted to find

YouTuber TheSleeb was shooting some random street footage with his new camera while in Bilbao, Spain when he was spotted by this "dodgy looking fellow" who started walking towards him while staring straight into his soul. | Posted: 29 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST Amazon is a strange and wonderful place to shop. If you need a little reminder of how strange it can get, you won't want to miss this great Thrillist article with some of the most terrible items available on the website. For example, this ridiculous jacket that doesn't just hold vapes, but actually is a vape. There's also Guy Fieri coffee pods, a cellphone shoulder holster and a pillow with a shirtless Nicolas Cage on it. Some of the items are a bit adult, but for the most part, they don't seem terrible until you read the description, so you're probably ok reading the article at work, but just be ready for some naughty items (I'm not going to even go into the picture up top).

English is a fluid language, and therefore new words are being added to the dictionary all the time in an effort to keep the English language sounding fresh for new generations. And now that the Bicentennial Babies born in 1976 are about to turn 40 it's a great time to look at an assortment of words that are turning 40 right along with Generation X. These are the words that shaped our generation, like the Black Helicopters watching us from above that the Ditzy people didn't seem to notice. We grew up with Chicken Nuggets, Jazzercise, Europop and Trekkies who write Fan Fic in our lives, and the term Meme was born in 1976 too, although it had yet to blossom into the obsession it is today.
| Places Where You Can No Longer "Spend a Penny" Posted: 29 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST In a previous era in Britain, if you said that you needed to "spend a penny," that meant that you needed to use a toilet. That's because public toilets used to cost a penny per visit. Many of the old public toilets of London are closed now. But the physical infrastructure may still be there, such as the ladies' toilet pictured above. Agnese Sanvito, a photographer, visited many of these disused establishments around London. Spitalfields Life talked to her about the project:

| This Video Captures What Surfing 60-Foot Swells Looks Like Posted: 29 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST This video captures the scene of Hawaii's Waimea Bay during the Quiksilver's Big Wave Invitational, a/k/a "The Eddie." The competition got started in 1985 as homage to surfer Eddie Aikau, who was lost at sea seven years earlier. Working as Oahu's first lifeguard, Aikau was known to dive into 30-foot waves to make rescues. The date of the Quicksilver is dependent on weather conditions, and this past week the time was right. Contestants rode swells up to 60 feet high, and winner John John Florence walked away with the $75,000 first prize. Via Esquire
